Bad news for me apparently means good news for some of you out there! It turns out one of my teeth has an infection and needs a root canal. And doubly unfortunately for me, my dental insurance won't help cover it because I've had my policy for less than 6 months! I know I have been very quiet lately, but that's because I've been busy. That's what I always say, isn't it?

But it's true! I don't remember where I've mentioned this before, but now I'm making sure it's known: I am attending cartooning school. I am thousands of miles away from my desert home (and pets) in order to study the art of making great comics. For all intents and purpose, it is grad school. If I successfully complete my thesis project at the end of my second year, I will be awarded with a Master of Fine Arts degree. Of course, more important than the degree is the networking opportunities and the experience of being at such an awesome school.

It's somewhat challenging to balance my personal projects with my schoolwork. I've uploaded some of my stuff to my art sites, but not everything. Examples of what's missing: 2+ hours of figure drawing from life every week, writing manuscripts, weekly sketchbook and lettering assignments, screenprinting, and a 20 copies of a 20-page comic narrative made with stick figures. And that doesn't take into account the lectures, presentations, and the constructive criticism workshops. But I'm not complaining! It's been a ton of fun. It just keeps me busy.

I know Soprano of Time hasn't updated in a while. To be honest, I'm thinking of withdrawing from the Top Webcomics ranking game. I guess I find it kind of depressing somehow, even though everyone has been amazingly supportive. But I can't ignore the fact that it brings in some traffic, so I haven't made up my mind yet. Either way, I'm determined to see Soprano of Time through to the end. Soprano of Time will return as Wednesday art updates in November. I don't know about December; I think I might like to do some winter/Christmas/Winter Solstice paintings.

When it comes to my priorities, school comes first followed by Slightly Damned. I could probably be a lot more diligent with my time management and get a lot more done. But I guess getting all stressed out wouldn't be good, either. These aren't excuses; I just wanted to explain what's been going on.

The Slightly Damned Plushification Project on Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects.....cation-project) was a runaway success! Wow! Thanks to everyone's generosity, no fewer than 6 Slightly Damned plushies have been completely funded. I can't wait to get my mitts on all those Buwaro, Rhea, Kieri, Sakido, Iratu, and Crunky dolls! It will take a few more months for all of them to be completed, of course, but you can expect to see them all on sale by early 2014.

Even though I'm done with the second Slightly Damned book, I'm too busy for twice-a-week updates. The Kickstarter is an ongoing project, since I need to oversee the plushie designs, prepare the bonus rewards and shipping materials, and make sure all the money gets used wisely. I also have to prepare for Phoenix Comic Con. I'm leaving for comics school in September. And partially because of the convention, our house will be full of partying guests until the end of the month!

...Okay, so maybe that last one doesn't sound very responsible, but let's say it's necessary for my mental health. :P

The thing is, I think I'm going to have to officially give up on updating Slightly Damned twice a week. I need the extra time this summer to make a buffer for the main comic, Soprano of Time, and my currently-on-hiatus art challenge Tumblr (http://chunochousen.tumblr.com/). When I go to school I expect I'll be too busy to keep up with all that stuff consistently on a weekly basis. But even if it isn't exactly a comic page, you guys will still have something to look at! Because of the success of the Kickstarter, there will be some sort of Slightly Damned-related art update on the site every Wednesday.

I fully intend to keep updating Slightly Damned on Saturdays even though I'll be busy at school. I mean, how can I give up after everyone was so supportive of the Kickstarter?

I'm always whining that Slightly Damned is crap because it has basically squat in terms of "notable" attention. No professional reviews, no awards, no Wikipedia page, etc. So this year, I want to try to win an Ursa Major Award.

I know it may seem silly to covet an award like this, but... I dunno, I figure I have nothing to lose by giving it a shot. Some of you might be confused as to why I care about a furry award when I've fought against being pigeonholed by the label for years, but I have two good reasons for this:
1) I think this is the only webcomic award where I have a snowball's chance in hell of actually being eligible for. The Harvey and Eisner awards are just... yeah, no way, the Hugo Awards require registration for expensive cons (one in San Antonio, TX, one in London), and the Webcartoonist's Choice Awards have been dead for years. If there's anything else out there that you guys know of, I'm all ears!

2) Hey, I figure if Pixar's Brave is elligble for an Ursa Major award, why not Slightly Damned?

I've got some bad news for you guys: there will be no new Slightly Damned pages this week. Maybe there could have been if I were the responsible type and had a buffer, but I'm not, so I don't. Anyway, there are two reasons why I'm not going to be making any new Slightly Damned pages this week:

1) I'm making an emergency visit to California to see my grandpa. He was recently diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. I originally planned to visit him after Anime Kaigi (http://animekaigi.com) this weekend, but my dad urged me to see him sooner rather than later. So I'm making the trip BEFORE the convention.

2) Anime Kaigi (http://animekaigi.com) is this weekend, and I'll be there Saturday and Sunday. It's a very teensy con, but it'll still be a time- and energy-consuming affair.

I'll still try to work on commission stuff and Soprano of Time this week, but I'm not sure how much I'd actually be able to get done. I don't want to make any promises I can't keep, so I'm being up front with you guys. I don't have time for Slightly Damned right now. I'll probably be able to get back to work next week, though! Then things can proceed normally.

Hey, guys. Sorry for being so late with the pages lately. I'm trying hard not to miss any updates completely, so thank you for being very patient and understanding with me. I kind of got in over my head because of all the family stuff, traveling, and computer issues these past few months. I think I'll be able to pull out of it soon, though! ...At least, I hope so.

In other news, the Slightly Damned store (http://sdamned.com/store) has 10 new button designs. 5 of them are standard buttons that will always be available. I've rearranged the sets so now there are button pin sets A, B, and C. The other 5 are special designs that will only be on sale through November 30th. Get them while you can!

Also, I am reopening commissions within a couple of days! I'm doing things differently this time: instead of only taking 10 orders, this time I will receive e-mails, notes, and what have you for <b>24 hours, starting 12:00am Pacific, Monday, October 1st</b>. If you want to place an order, you MUST contact me between 12:00am to 11:59pm. Any orders before or after that will be ignored. This way, people don't have to be worried about first-come, first-serve as long as you contact me within the 24 hour period.

This is the first time I've ever done it that way, so I wonder what will happen. Let's find out!

From the ashes a new fire bee is born. Slightly Damned's community has now been absorbed into a new consolidated community that includes of all Monster Hive comics. That means we have a new forum and a new IRC chat channel. Discover new comics and new comrades!

It's a new forum with a clean slate, so all the old topics are gone and you have to re-register. BUT we do have backup copies that my friend and fellow hive member bugbyte may be able to access to dig up old posts. If there's something you really need to see to continue your roleplaying or whatever, you have one week to request a salvage. More information is in the appropriate thread.

Note: because we have a completely clean slate, that means all bans from the past are gone. We're starting completely anew. The Hive is also planning to have a "Chat with Hive" event in about a week. It's like the "Chat with Chu" events in the past, except you'll get to talk to every creator of every hive comic. We still need to work out the details about when we'll meet, but I expect it could be as soon as next weekend and it will be at least 2-3 hours long. Although if you come into the chat today, you just may find some hive members!

So Slightly Damned and Soprano of Time are both back to normal. New Slightly Damned pages are uploaded on Wednesday and Saturday, and new Soprano of Time strips are uploaded on Saturday. The only thing left to get back to normal are commissions. I have a couple of loose ends I would like to tie up before I re-open, though. Perhaps I should take the time to make a comics buffer as well. Ha! Yeah, right. We all know how much I suck at that.

If you're reading this on Wednesday, May 2, you might be wondering, "Hey! Where's the new comic?" Well, it's time for me to face the facts: I just don't have the time to do the comic twice a week this month. Due to a stroke of good luck followed by a stroke of extremely, extremely bad luck, my friends and I are moving this month. If things go well we'll be moving again within the next few weeks/months. Sounds fun, huh?

Not only that, but I really need to divert some of my energy into preparing for Fanime. Yep, I wouldn't miss it for the world, so I'm hell-bent on going come hell or high water! I've already bought my table and everything, but I don't know what space I've been assigned yet. When I know, I'll make an announcement. I'll also be there with my friend/roommate Arborwin, the creator of Grayling, who'll have a table right next to mine.

If you can make it to Fanime, you totally should! I'll be selling Slightly Damned merchandise at discounted prices (and of course, you wouldn't have to pay for shipping), as well as accepting traditional commissions. I'm also going to be selling non-SD buttons and artwork. I usually don't sell those sorts of things online; only at conventions.

What this means for the comic: I'm temporarily going back to the old schedule of one page a week. I'll do my best to update every Saturday, and I won't be making up the missed Wednesday pages later. However, I'll try to upload a new drawing on Wednesdays instead. Why? Because I ant to show you guys I'm still alive and I'm not slacking off. It's just that single drawings take a lot less time to make than a Slightly Damned page.

Unfortunately, I'm also going to put "The Legend of Buwaro: Soprano of Time" on hiatus. I'm not giving up on it; I just don't have time for it right now. I don't mind if my TWC rank drops like a rock because of this, because after all, I won't be providing incentives.

tl;dr Drawings on Wednesday, comics on Saturday, no Soprano of Time or commissions until at least my birthday on June 16.
(Why my birthday? Because it's easy to remember. *3*)

I know this is super, super lame, but believe me-- life has given me a series of sucker punches and I'm not happy about this either.

It's about time I stopped putting off writing about this. So! Last weekend I flew on over to California to attend my first Anime Los Angeles convention ever. It was also my first US convention in over 2 years, and I had a blast.

The funny thing is that when I reached the convention on Saturday, the first thing I did was pay for a badge and then leave. No wait, the first thing I did was gawk at how many Homestuck trolls there were. I'm convinced there were more of them there than Bronies; go figure. Anyway, I got my badge and met up with my friends. Then we left the con for a few hours to eat at a nearby Carl's Jr., shop for forgotten batteries and cables at Fry's Electronics, and pick up my friends' friend from Long Beach. THEN we actually did stuff at the convention.

Let me back up a bit here: a few months ago, I was contacted by RikuCKitty on deviantArt to help contribute art for the convention. I agreed, but I procrastinated and then was assaulted by a vicious week-long migraine. The deadline was upon me and I apologized for not contributing anything, and was told they already had plenty of art to use. But! They needed someone to color the artwork that the Artist Guest of Honor Stan Sakai had submitted.

As you may or may not know, Stan Sakai is the author of the Eisner-award winning Usagi Yojimbo and one of my personal heroes. I've loved the series for a long time, so as a huge fan I was honored and delighted to be given the opportunity to color his artwork. So I did! I didn't talk too much about it before the convention because I half-expected my coloring not to be used. The issue of distribution rights was never discussed with me, but since the convention is already over, I don't think there's any harm in sharing small versions of the artwork. Here is the art that Mr. Sakai drew and which I colored:

(If it turns out I'm not allowed to post these, I expect I'll find out very quickly! And of course, I will comply in taking them down if requested.)

So the good news is that they did use it! The bad news is that they didn't give me any credit for it in the con booklet. It was an honest mistake, but was pretty mad when I discovered this fact and went around complaining to all my friends about it until they wanted to tear their ears off. I admit that I was being pretty damn obnoxious because I was pissed. So after we finished doing errands, I dragged my friend Suspi with me to complain to con ops. They apologized, offered to give me a free pass next year (I wonder if they'll follow through?), and a package of Chips Ahoy!. I was satisfied... for a while.

After that I followed Suspi to the Masquerade room and accompanied him as a "press assistant". I admit that I didn't really do anything other than crack silly jokes and chat it up with another press photographer who was sitting in front of us. Apparently she works for Gaia Online(?). I gave her a Slightly Damned sticker with my name and URL written on the back, because I'm bad at planning and still haven't gotten any new business cards made. Before the masquerade began, I saw Stan Sakai and his wife get ushered into some second-row seats behind the judges. They quietly slipped away sometime during the show, though.

ALA's cosplay masquerade was the first one I had watched since high school. I always skipped out on watching masquerades at Fanime in favor of other activities, but I dunno. Maybe I should make it a habit from now on? A lot of the acts were... awkward, but I enjoyed the ones that I felt were actually pretty good. I also don't want to begrudge people for going out there and shamelessly showing off how much they love their hobby. In my opinion, the best skits were the one about OkamiDen and teaching Chibi how to use brush techniques, the one parodying magical school girls (in general) which featured real props and transformation and attack sequences (!), and a My Little Pony skit with girls in dresses as Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie. That last one won best of show.

I was going to stay the night at a friend's house, but I screwed up and didn't call her to let her know I wasn't dead. By the time we got in contact with one another after the masquerade, it was past 10pm and I didn't want to make her drive across LA to pick me up. After eating dinner at Denny's (country-fried steak and broccoli and greenbeans that weren't quite warmed up enough), I ended up sharing a hotel room with my friends. In the end, there were 4 people in the room: me and 3 guys. Which is funny not because of the gender ratio (because whatever, who cares), but because that is the least amount of people I've ever shared a hotel room with at a convention. I'm used to a few nights of having to tiptoe around bodies strewn about the floor, remembering that the closet door could open at any second because someone is sleeping in there, and to check the tub for people before using the bathroom.

Sunday was the last day of the convention as well as my last day in LA. It was a very short trip. I met up with my friend (the one whose house I was supposed to stay at), we had brunch at a Coco's, and hopped back to the convention. I got the idea to once again make a snot of myself by complaining to con ops about being left out of the con booklet. I told them, "I came here for Stan Sakai and to tell them that I colored his work. I didn't make it into the convention booklet, so now I'm afraid he might think I'm just lying. Can someone introduce me to him?" Although I'm sure I sounded more annoying than that. Wearily the con ops staff told me to talk to the convention chairman (and they probably rolled their eyes when I left). After waiting in line I did just that. The chairman shook my hand, gave me an apology and a "Sorry" ribbon to attach to my badge, and the official convention photography took me to Stan Sakai's autograph session.

I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that there were less than 10 people lining up to see Mr. Sakai. On the one hand, I feel he deserves a lot more attention and recognition than that. On the other hand, not having to deal with a crowd was probably pretty nice for everyone, because Mr. Sakai is a really nice guy who took the time to chat with everybody. Anyway, the convention photographer (Richard Man) introduced me and took a photo of me and Mr. Sakai together. I told Mr. Sakai that I colored his work and he complimented me on doing a good job. I have him a note with a Rhea sticker and charm attached, and he gave me an "Usagi Yojimbo" ribbon and signed my badge.

And then after that my friend and I toured the Dealer's Room and Artists' Alley. I didn't buy anything aside from the official convention t-shirt, but my friend got an Ezlo hat from the Minish Cap. I got some good ideas for what to do for displays at my next convention appearance. I think I'll stop writing this entry because what happened after that doesn't really have anything to do with Anime Los Angeles! My friend and I just spent the day shopping and eating together before I flew home. I will say, though, that it was really good to eat quality okonomiyaki again.

It was a great trip and I glad I went, even if I did get a case of the post-convention snots (sore throat, runny nose, blech). Just part of the experience, I guess.

So what is the big announcement I've been keeping secret these past few... man I don't even remember without looking at my previous post. Whatever, then, here it is:

From now on, Slightly Damned will be updating twice a week! This isn't like the donation drives or "drawing this is really easy and I want to get this super fast so let's do this" events in the past. I intend for this to be a permanent change. So now you can look forward to new Slightly Damned pages every Wednesday and Saturday. I chose those days because: 1) everyone is already used to the Saturday updates, and 2) I originally considered Tuesday and Thursday, but the wait between Thursday and the following Tuesday is too long. The wait from Wednesday to Saturday to Wednesday is a little more even, I think.

You got that? Slightly Damned will now update regularly every Wednesday and Saturday instead of its old once-a-week schedule. I think this addresses the most common complaint about the comic I've gotten these past 7+ years. (From the people who actually like the comic, anyway.)

I'm also going to take the time to address some of guesses I saw for what the announcement was going to be:

You're going to make a book!
Yes, that's true. I AM going to make a book. My previous goal was to get one done before the end of the year, but I admit I'm not going to meet that right now. I haven't worked on the book very much lately, which is my bad. I've mainly been doing brainstorming. I pretty much know what printing company I'm going to use, what format the book should be in, how many comics the first book will include, and what bonus content I'm going to make for it. However, there's a lot of work that needs to be done in terms of resizing, cutting up, and retyping dialogue (NOT rewriting. I just want to fix typos and make it legible). I'm not giving up, I promise! It's just slow going.

The Buwaro and Kieri figures are done!
Not quite. I think we have enough votes on Patch Together by now, so I think the next step is to let them know we're serious about wanting those figurines made. I sent them an e-mail about a week ago asking if there's some sort of requirement we've failed to fill, but I haven't gotten a response yet. Buwaro and Kieri have WAY more votes than any other design on the site, but if you still haven't voted for them, [please] [do]! If you already have voted for them and are impatient like me for progress, then please e-mail Patch Together to let them know. I don't want you guys to be malicious or spam them or anything. Just tell them that you want these figures!

You're going to make plushies!
Sorry, I really don't have the money to make those plushies right now. If Slightly Damned became more popular and I had more readers to sell merchandise to, then maybe I could justify it. That's part of the reason why I decided I needed to work harder and update more now that I have more time to do so (time was the main reason I couldn't do it before). Short of a very generous plushie company giving me a business deal out of pity, these guys are going to have to wait.
However! I have made steps in negotiating getting hats made! They'll be a little different than how they were in the past, but we'll still all have to wait a few weeks to see how things turn out.

Hey guys, just editing my journal entry a bit to reflect some new information. Also, in case you haven't heard, I'll be making a big announcement next weekend on Saturday, December 3rd! Speculation is welcome, but don't expect an answer from me. My lips are sealed. It wouldn't be any fun if I didn't make it a surprise! Don't worry, though: it's definitely going to be something good.

Also... did you know that migraines caused by pressure changes suck really bad? I've been cursed by a constant headache since Monday evening, and it made me nearly incapable of drawing or concentrating on anything for days. Except, you know, playing Skyward Sword. I would spend about half the day groaning about my head, then load up on ibuprofen and play that newfangled Zelda game until I felt like I was going to die. It was so worth it.

Anyway, I lost a couple days of drawing time thanks to the migraine that wouldn't quit. I'm feeling a lot better now, thankfully, but hopefully it'll be completely gone by Monday so I can concentrate on drawing again.

Finally, the [Slightly Damned store] has been updated!
EDIT: The new sticker designs have finally arrived! Now you can buy stickers of Death, Sakido, Iratu, Azurai, and Lazuli!

In addition to the updated system for buying the new charms and stickers, you can now buy shirts, drinkware, bags, and mousepads from the [Zazzle store]! That includes shirts like Three Demon Thadius, The World's Worst Demon, and Slightly Wyvern!

I think I'm only going to spam FurAffinity a couple more times to fill it up with art I've completed this year. When I'm done my gallery should contain all my art worth uploading from 2011, some pictures from 2010, and maybe one or two from 2009. This doesn't include SD pages, though. :B

Anyway...
I've got a lot of stuff to tell you about!

First, some bad news: I can't afford to make the plushies right now. Thanks for all the interest you showed, though! I'm not going to give up on them forever. Slightly Damned simply needs to become a lot more popular before I can afforrd to make them. It would really suck if I paid the thousands of dollars necessary to get them produced only to discover I couldn't make that money back. The good news is that if I DO make plushies, it's more cost-effective to make ALL THREE instead of just one. So if Slightly Damned has become more successful in about a year's time... we'll see!

Soon I will get the ball rolling on getting hats produced. I hope to have some available for sale by Christmas, although at this point I can't make any promises.

The stickers are finally getting produced and should probably arrive next week!

You may have noticed that I'm making a bunch of shirt designs. I'm trying to get a bunch of product designs done soon so I can completely revamp the CafePress store with a lot of new stuff. I should be done no later than the end of the month!

The book is still is one of the lower-priority items. I still plan to get it done by the end of the year.

Figurines: I decided to go ahead and submit designs for Buwaro and Kieri figurines (separately) to Patch Together! You know the drill: if the figure gets enough positive votes, it will be opened to pre-orders. If it gets enough pre-orders, it will be produced! Go for it, guys!

Lastly, and this is IMPORTANT:

We are excited to announce that both the forum and the chat have undergone an overhaul! They now feature new and improved terms of services-- that means that the rules are now much more lax than they were in the past. Yes, that includes stuff about spelling and grammar. The forums also feature new boards such as Forum Games and even a section for Roleplaying. Everyone is welcome to come share their thoughts and comments.

ALSO, if you were banned in the past for something, then you may discover you can post again. We are quietly giving you a second chance. Please don't take advantage of this by spamming the boards/chat with negative comments or OMG I'M FREE!!!! Just... be cool, okay? ;3
