My Thoughts on Zootopia (Spoiler Free)
Posted 9 years agoI just got back from seeing Zootopia, and well...
Actually, before I go into my exact thoughts I'd like to share my opinions on the most recent Disney movies before this one
Frozen:
Cute, but not really my movie. Relationships felt a little shoehorned and the comic relief was grating.
Big Hero 6:
Fun action movie with a lot of heart, especially the stuff with the brothers.
Inside Out:
Really good look on hard times in a child's growth as a person, sometimes the logic failed on me and somewhat took away from my investment, but still pretty good.
The Good Dinosaur:
Beautiful animation, lackluster everything else.
With that said, what's my opinion on Zootopia?
My favorite out of the bunch.
Zootopia did so many things right, that the few flaws I found were heavily outweighed. First off, I love the little world they set up, everything feels thought out, and all the neat little solutions for stuff like "how would a rodent get here?" do add to the movie. I honestly could see a whole cinematic universe (like Cars tried to do) working really well, because they really did develop the city. Now, a movie can't invest me on world building alone (though it is a good start), you need a good story and you need good characters. Starting with characters, I think they did fantastically with the characters, especially the two leads. Judy and Nick both are likable, yet have fundamental flaws to them. The fact that they try and work at these issues, really makes them likable. I'm not going to go into their flaws (especially Judy's) but I do want to say that character growth is abundant, and it works. As for the side characters, most are really good. I enjoyed the way that even if they had celebrity voices, it didn't really take away from their character, if anything it helped in some cases. Now, Shakira's character feels really inserted in there just so they could have that original song in there, but in the one real scene she has (excluding the song) it feels a little out of place. Other than that though, the characters are pretty spot on. And the story, it's pretty much what I wanted. It's a decent mystery, with enough twists and turns to keep you invested from that standpoint, but it also keeps you invested on an emotional level, the relationships really do grow in this, something I like seeing, especially in family entertainment. If I had to say one major thing that makes this movie for me (besides the Godfather jokes and the fact that it obviously panders to furries) it's Judy. Judy is very likable, very easy to relate to, and in the end, you really do emphasize with her.
Overall, I'd rate Zootopia (in my opinion) gets a 9/10, and is one I will definitely pick up on Blu Ray when it comes out. Also, it will probably be the one Disney movie I'll be happy to see win Best Animated Picture!
If you've got the time and the money, I'd definitely recommend going to see it!
I wish that the other upcoming Disney and Disney/Pixar films excited me as much as this one did, but so far... nothing really stands out.
But hey, only time can tell!
