We say no more.

I mean, cynical reviews are what all these kids are doing these days, right?

Of Shills and Whiners
General | Posted 13 years agoSo...after cooling down a few degrees and such, I began examining the ongoing debate between the people who hate Mass Effect 3's ending, ie. the fans, and people defending Bioware, ei Corporate shills AKA "Gaming Journalists".
Yes, I admit, the "Retake Mass Effect 3" thing was overblown, but so far I have to say I'm very disappointed in modern gaming journalism. The term "Art" is thrown around in the Entertainment industry these days as often as the words "Awesome" and "Epic" to the point where it's meaning is becoming lost and foggy. The word itself is often used to deflect criticism.
"It's not SUPPOSED to be Art, You HIPSTER! It's not supposed to win award!"
"It's ART you Philistine!YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND IT!"
I understand this is likely a tough time for Bioware. The Old Republic is showing signs of being stillborn already, likely draining BioWare resources to keep it afloat. And with ME3, they had to balance a delicate tightrope of "Fan Expectations", "Gaining new fans" "Artistic intregity" and of course "Publisher demands".
Now, with the exception of a few younger or less Mainstream ( as in "Not eating directly out of Publisher hands like a good little shill) game publications have defended BioWare from the legions of enraged fans ove rthe ending, citing issues of "Artistic Integrity" And "Fan Entitlement".The former is amusing to me.
I find it odd that such supporters of "Games are Art" are so swift to defend a major publishers AAA title mere weeks after shilling it.
Were are the articles Condemning legions for buying MW3 and neglecting Rayman Origins? Where was the push get games like Rayman to the general audience? But that's a different rant.
Pretty much all of them blew a gasket when the ending DLC was announced, saying Bioware was "Ditching it's principles". Know what i say?
BioWare can keep there ending DLC. If it sees release in April, then that means they either rushed it out to sait fans, or it was being made in tandem with the game.
Either way, I am no mood for this crap. Keep your 2 hour 10 dollar DLC. If you ask me, I'm not the entitled one. The Entitled ones are the guys asking for 10 dollar DLC packs the day after and the month after release.
YYou had your chance to get me hooked on the DLC and playing this game well into the year. You had the chance to give us a decent conclusion to the ending. The die is cast, all bets are off.

Well, Bioware, THANKS OF THAT!
General | Posted 13 years agoAdded some more details on other Bioware/EA Bullshit and drama.
Warning: If you are playing ME3/plan on playing it and don't want it spoiled, stop, mash the back button. This Journal contains gratuitous amounts of nerd rage and spoilers.
Of course, the topic of my rage is beginning to reach "Snape Kills Dumbledore" status. Eitehr way, read at your own risk.
So, being a a fan of RPGs in general and Mass Effect, it was no surprise I got the third game when it came out. And it was good. I was enjoying it thorgouly.
Then...the endgame hit.
Saving the Earth makes Xen look well put together. The game throws the toughest enemies at you in droves. usually enemies that can one shot or two shot Shepard. Yeah, the gameplay devolves into Russian Roulette, and you'll be seeing the Game Over screen!
But thought dogged persistence, I beat the game and reached the ending!Huzzah! I get an ending that reflects my choices I made over the tril-
...What? Technological dark age? I have three choices, all of which basically shit over everything I spent three games doing?
NOTHING I DID ACTUALLY FUCKING MATTERED!
That's GREAT Bioware! It's bad enough you felt the need to murder the cast of ME2 like Andrew Hussie, that's great!
But these endings...look, It don't care if you scream "Bioware didn't want a cliche Happy Sunshine and Rainbows ending you moron!" I don't care. I would argue sometimes a cliche can be much more fulfilling and meaningful then going against the expectations . Imagine Star Trek generations if Kirk died a heroic death rather then having a bridge dropped on him from a C-List Trek villain. Nothing was really said with these endings other then "Shit happens."
Which brings me to my main complaint. These three endings run contrary to the ENTIRE FUCKING POINT OF MASS EFFECT: Choice. We were told from day one that our choices would matter. That for better or worse, our choices would have an impact on the entire universe.
And that's exactly why these endings suck!Everything you spent 3 games doing: Gone. It doesn't matter. The very selling point of the series was drop kicked.
I was pissed at Dragon Age II for deciding they needed to railroad the plot. I sighed in quiet frustration when it was announced Mass Effect 3 would have a multiplayer component.
Then you announce that we'd get to have a PROTHEAN PARTY MEMBER I I was going to forgive...then it turned out to be Day One DLC. ten dollars. Unless you bought a special edition. Guys the game is 60 bucks Canadian already, you're asking use to shell out 70 for the goddamn game!
Look, I can understand if you pulled this shit like a Online Pass. As much as that practice irks me, giving a nice bonus to people who buy new might have come under less fire. Granted Warner did the same thing with Catowoman, but they still got shit.
I love you call US entitled and we know nothing about game development, AND STILL EXPECT US TO SHELL OUT MONEY FOR A 10 DOLLAR DLC THE DAY OF RELEASE!
EA, and I'm thinking Bioware must think "loyal Fan" translate to "sycophant."
And of course the there's the use photoshopped of stealing images for advertisement and even in game.
Take for example we finally get to see what Tali looks like under the mask! Thing is some people did some digging and well...

Man, the greats of graphics and art in the Industry....Havok, Unreal Engine, Ubiart, GIS...
But this...fuck. If this is the direction Bioware is taking, then fuck it.
Well, I doubt anyone is gonna read this sucker, but hey, I need to get this off my chest.
