Video Game Meme (A Game Designer's Perspective)
Posted 10 years agoI wasn't tagged by anyone, but I thought it'd be a fun little thing to do!
1. You started to play videogames at the age of...?
I'm a little hazy on exactly when I started to play video games, or were even interested in them at all. But I think I'd date it back to around when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old.
2. First game you ever played?
First game I ever played was Pokemon Yellow. Which I spent countless hours trying to complete, and have actually probably spent the most time playing out of any games to date.
3. First console you owned?
The yellow Game Boy Colour! It was a combo pack with Pokemon Yellow. And I still have it now!
4. Consoles you own/owned?
In order of appearance: Game Boy Colour, Game Boy Advanced, Gamecube, Xbox, Playstation 2, Game Boy SP, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, Wii, SNES (Better late than never), Nintendo 3DS -> 3DS XL -> NEW 3DS XL, PS4, and finally Wii U
5. Your favorite genre(s)?
I don't really have a definitive favourite genre, but a few that I quite enjoy are Turn-Based Strategy games (Especially XCOM), Action-Adventures (Legend of Zelda <3!), and Stealth games (Metal Gear! ;o;).
6. Favorite game character(s)?
I think my favourite game character of all time has to be Samus Aran. I must have a thing for giant power suits because she kicks some serious ass. But I hate that Nintendo decided to shorten her stature from 6'3!!... to a measly 5'1" in Smash Bros and Other M. Actually I don't even consider Other M as canon because that was so glaringly out of character for Samus. Anyway, Samus, best bounty hunter, total badass.
7. Which element(s) in games is/are most important for you (story, graphic etc.)?
I know it's easy to say something like the 'unique' factor of a game, but obviously given the sheer amount of games produced nowadays, it's pretty hard to come up with something truly unique. I try to base my fondness of a game off how hard it grips and immerses me in the world that it's created. That can't be said for all games obviously. Like come on, how is a bridge building sim going to get me to feel like I'm actually immersed in the world... or maybe that could be an interesting first-person mechanic...
In any case, it all depends on if the game devs have spent the time and effort to create an immersive experience for the player. Too often do major publishers force game developers to poop out a game year round to quench the rabid fan base's need for more content, but in the process lose what made the original game special in the first place.
8. You don't care about ...?
I don't really care about the amount of hours of gameplay that so many people often relate to the worth of a game. I don't care how long a game is, as long as it's delivering a well-worth experience, I can come out of it wanting more.
But I should mention, intentionally cutting off a game early due to wanting to prolong the game's series (I'm looking at you Order 1886), worsens the experience instead of finishing on a high note.
9. Prefer PC or Console?
I definitely prefer my PC, and I hate that the console races are forced to develop exclusive games for their consoles to stay relevant. I get that some companies just don't develop for PCs because it's easier to build for a stable platform, rather than a incredibly variable PC platform. But I missed out playing so many games because of exclusivity deals. ;o;
10. Your current 3 Fav games?
Current favourites are Metal Gear Solid V (Absolutely LOVING this game), Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Gotta hunt all the giant monsters!), and Super Mario Sunshine (Always good to go back and play a classic).
11. 3 Games you didn't like...
I can't really think of many games that I super disliked, but I guess one of the top of my head would be Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. It was an incredible let down to the Banjo Kazooie series because it had nothing to do with the original games. Here's hoping Yooka-Laylee will be good!
12. One game that's totally overrated in your opinion?
The only game that I can think of personally would be Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. It was over-hyped by my friends as "A total revival of the CoD series!!". But it was just another CoD with some future paint slathered over it.
13. Ever played an online game, if yes which one(s)?
I got suckered back into playing Guild Wars 2 again, which I'm quite enjoying. But I don't typically play online games solo, I only ever jump on with friends.
14. What do you think about ...Tomb Raider?
I've honestly never played Tomb Raider. Though I've heard Lara Croft has some very angular breasts.
15. ...Tetris?
A nice little game that has stood the test of time. Always fun to go back and play a few rounds.
16. ...Sonic?
I've played quite a few 2D Sonic games and really enjoyed most of them. But my only playing of 3D Sonic was "Shadow The Hedgehog", and boy was that a mistake.
17. ...Spyro?
I never played Spyro, but I always heard good things. Not a big fan of the new 'Skylanders' games though. But that's just my grudge against pointless collectibles talking.
18. ...The Sims?
My only ever experience with the Sims was an AI experiment where I had a bunch of Homestuck characters run around for a while. Was quite fun, but I wouldn't consider myself a fan.
19. ...Legend of Zelda?
Probably one of my dearest game series. I absolutely adore the LoZ series, and all the lore surrounding it. My two favourite games from the series have to be Wind Waker and Link Between Worlds. Both were and still are incredibly unique experiences, different from any other game series. If you've never played a Zelda game I HIGHLY recommend you at least try them out.
20. ... Assassin's Creed?
The two times I've tried to play Assassin's Creed on my PC both resulted in game-breaking bugs or just general experience killing moments. They look like they're decently fun games, but their bugs really killed it for me.
21. GAME OVER!!!
Snake? SNAKE!? SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!?!
22. Game(s) you'd love to see?
I'd absolutely adore another Metal Gear Solid game in the series, because it seemed like we were just scratching the surface of Open-Level design in the Phantom Pain. That, or Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. Because I need more robo-Raiden in my life. Like right now.
23. Game(s) you're waiting for at the moment?
Fallout 4 is looking super fun as an RPG! But other than that I'm really looking forward to XCOM 2, Monster Hunter X, Zelda Tri-Force Heroes (Which is just around the corner!), and Yooka-Laylee.
I'll tag up
