It's Getting Ok Now
Posted 11 years agoForget everything I said in my last journal - I talked with my parents about how I feel about college plans, and things have been set. To give me more time to figure out what I truly want to do for a job, I'm going to a community college to get the basic credits out of the way while also working my new job. I'm not angry at my parents anymore - in fact, they were supportive of the idea of not jumping into a major right away - all they asked was that I at least get some general ed classes done this year, which is what the community college is for.
Everything's getting Ok now - I'm going to be a college freshman in the fall, I've got a good job that I enjoy a lot, and I've got a family (and a God) that love me more than I'll ever know. Of course, that doesn't mean that I'm not going to give up spending time here on FA - checking out everyone's artwork is still something I enjoy a lot too.

A need to vent about growing up (and me VS parents)
Posted 12 years agoSo, I’m graduating high school soon. You’d think I’d be excited right? Well, I’m not.
With graduation comes talk about college, and of course, my parents really want me to go to college. And at first, I was all up for it. But after starting to seriously think about college more - in classes such as Career Mentorship, Independent Living, and Personal Finance - I feel as if I wanted to do college simply because my parents wanted me to do it.
The thing is, I want to be a professional musician. To be more specific, I want to be a musician that’s constantly touring and making records. The problem is, musicians don’t always make a lot of money. And college is going to cost a lot. Going to college for a major that has to do with being a musician wouldn’t exactly get paid off well. I could study something like business or audio production, but I want to play the music. I would be thousands for a major I wouldn’t use that much anyways. Besides, I could learn about those kinds of things while being a part of the business, right?
I’d at least like to be able to wait before going to college, working a full time job for a year or two so that I have an idea of what it’s like to be part of the economy, but Dad laughs at the idea.
In fact, it seems as though my parents laugh at or ignore a lot of my ideas. It took years for them to agree with the idea of vocal lessons (they were always saying things along the lines of “forget about singing”), and those didn’t last long. They also didn’t like the idea of trying to go and try out for bands. Yeah I’d lose sleep playing until late and then going to school, but that would allow me to network and get to know musicians. After all, that’s the most important part of being in the music business, right?
Mom and Dad do say they want the best for me - but that seems to only mean as a person. What if I need different things as an artist?
So in short, I’m not looking forward to growing up. If I could wait (or even pass on) college, and focus on doing the musician thing, then it would be a different story.
I guess that’s major reason I like BabyFur artwork - it reminds me of when I didn’t have to worry about jobs, money, etc. I could keep playing music if I wanted to.
Sorry I’m being so negative towards my parents with this writing, but this is how I feel about things right now.
