Tonaba Kickstarter Project -- wordvomit/faq(ish)
Posted 12 years agoSo I wanted to write a journal talking a little bit about this game, Tonaba, which you may have seen snippets of in my gallery over the last few days!
I'm going to be talking about Tonaba, my role in the project, and a little bit on the basics of Kickstarter for those who want to know more about that.
To back the project, go here: http://bit.ly/tonabaks
Want free stuff? Go here: http://bit.ly/tonabaraffle
So first and foremost, About Tonaba
Tonaba has been likened to Magic: the Gathering minus the luck factor. Rather than selling packs of randomized cards, Tonaba will sell individual cards so that you can personalize your strategy and playing style without wasting money and space on cards you'll never use.
Alongside the unique style of playing, Tonaba also features a very unique story! Rather than working with mages and warriors, Tonaba deals with a world which is governed by "authors", who use "ink" to write their minions into existence and gain power. The themes of Tonaba include magic, steampunk, artistry, and fantasy. The characters involved are bright and full of depth -- from the angelic butterfly-obsessed fluttermage to the macabre carrion fetishist.
There are 150 cards currently ready for production. They have been playtested thoroughly and are ready to go! But it doesn't end there. Expansion packs of all sorts are just waiting to be polished off and added to the already wide variety of awesome cards.
My role in the project
The art of Tonaba will feature beautiful (in my opinion, anyway) art by some really fabulous furry artists (including myself!).
This is honestly one of the biggest projects I've had the honor to work on, and I would love to see it succeed. I've been hugely enthusiastic about this thing ever since I was first approached to be a part of the project. I will be posting some of the art I've done for Tonaba in my gallery, so you guys can see the sort of work I'll be doing.
Never funded a Kickstarter before?
It can be kinda intimidating. I wanted to reach out to those of you who have never worked with Kickstarter and want to know a little more about the process. Everything I've added in quotes to this journal is taken directly from Kickstarter's help & FAQ section. You can look for yourself if you have any other questions! c:
So I think the biggest concern out there is whether your donation will go to waste. What if, for instance, you back the project for $5, but Tonaba never reaches it's goal and is a huge disastrous failure? The awesome thing is, you won't ever have lost that $5.
The money you pledge is not deducted from your account or charged to your card unless and until the project reaches it's complete goal. That means you never need to fear making a donation and having it go to waste. Essentially the donation will only be accepted if the project is a success.
When is my card charged?
If the project you’re backing is successfully funded, your card will be charged when the project reaches its funding deadline. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is never charged. That's why we call them pledges.
That's all well and good, you say. But what the heck keeps this guy from running off with my money, if the project reaches its goal?
Kickstarter legally obligates project leaders to fulfill all rewards or refund backers who did not receive their reward.
Is a creator legally obligated to fulfill the promises of their project?
Yes. Kickstarter's Terms of Use require creators to fulfill all rewards of their project or refund any backer whose reward they do not or cannot fulfill. (This is what creators see before they launch.) We crafted these terms to create a legal requirement for creators to follow through on their projects, and to give backers a recourse if they don't. We hope that backers will consider using this provision only in cases where they feel that a creator has not made a good faith effort to complete the project and fulfill.
Besides,
arcanethewoof has got a pretty kick-ass plan. As you can see on the Tonaba kickstarter page, everything is laid out -- all the projected expenditures, plans for production, etc.
But there's a lot going on behind the scenes, as well. Arcane has been busy playtesting all of the cards currently in the game -- and he's still working on playtesting more to come in the future! He's also put together a lot of resources for everyone working on the project, and has pulled together a very professional and streamlined pathway to success.
I wish I could show you guys some of the awesome stuff he's done -- from bringing all of the project participants together in a modern file-sharing forum so that we can work openly together, to drawing up detailed and highly professional contracts for everyone involved in order to maximize the chances for success.
This isn't something we've just pulled out of thin air -- this is a big project that's been in the works for a while. I'm super excited to see it launch, and I hope you guys are too.
So if you have even one dollar to throw at us, we would really appreciate it. We're anticipating that at least half of our funding will come from small donations, so every little bit helps!
And for my friends outside of the US and UK? You can donate too! Kickstarter accepts all major forms of credit/debit cards. c:
Anyway, I hope I haven't gotten on your nerves with all this babble! I'm just super excited about this, and I think it has a ton of potential to be an awesome, addictive game.

Thank you
Posted 12 years agoThank you to everyone who reached out and offered their words of support. <3 I still feel like the whole thing is surreal and I have to keep reminding myself that my aunt is gone. But I think the whole family (aside from my uncle, understandably) is feeling a little better now that the shock has begun to wear off...
A small, final update -- the doctors managed to do an EEG scan of the baby, and found absolutely no brain activity. They will keep her alive for another 24 hours, and after that it will be over.

Death in the Family...
Posted 12 years agoI'm not sure why I'm writing this journal, I just feel like I need to write it out. I need someone else to hear this story, because it still feels unreal.
I was going to hang out with my parents for a few hours, earlier this afternoon. My husband and I drove to their house and found it unlocked, but no one was home. Already I thought that was odd. My mom does not leave the house if she can help it -- let alone would she ever leave the front door unlocked. There were drinks and half-eaten food everywhere.
I got a text -- my aunt, who is pregnant and only a few years older than me -- was having complications with her pregnancy and they had just left for the hospital. I didn't think anything of it -- 'complications' could mean anything. She was young, healthy, happy, glowing. The baby was doing great, last I had heard.
We rushed to the hospital -- but on the way the news kept getting worse and worse. They'd had to take the baby prematurely -- at 7 months. It wasn't looking good for the baby -- she was born with no heartbeat, and even though they had restarted her heart she was having violent, uncontrollable seizures. The doctors had no idea how long she had been technically dead before her heart was restarted, so the extent of the damage done to her brain and body is unknown.
And then I got the news. My aunt didn't make it. She died twice before they finally failed to resuscitate her for the last time. They still don't know what happened. Throughout her pregnancy the doctors had said everything was normal. She'd even been at the doctor just a few days before, complaining about feeling a little ill. The doctor said it was normal and to just have some rest.
By this afternoon she was dead.
She's my age. The age difference is so small that we could have gone to the same schools.
Now the baby is in critical condition. It's unlikely she will survive. Her survival depended on a transfer to Seattle, but she suddenly took a turn for the worse and is not stable enough to move, now. We live in a small hick town, and there are no specialists that can help.
I just.. I can't really feel anything right now.
The sound of my uncle sobbing... her grandparents weeping... it still haunts me.
Nobody should die so young.

Posted 12 years agoFor anyone wondering, lol, and since I want to get that journal off my front page -- I tried out a bunch of suggestions that you guys gave me for feeling better about painting, and it's been working fabulously! :D I've been painting up a storm.
I anticipate having my current queue (minus one or two late-comer commissioners) cleared by the end of this week. Commission slots will open then!
Around the 7th, I will have a surprise for you guys. Get ready for that; I've been working on something BIG. <3

Finishing art...?
Posted 12 years agoSo lately finishing my paintings has been like pulling teeth. D;
I don't know what's going on, but I feel completely at a loss when it comes to finishing up my art.
Coming up with new ideas, sketches, concepts -- it's all a breeze. But pulling it all together, which is usually my favorite part of the process, suddenly feels a bit more like a chore.
I know other people experience this too -- some call it art block, or lack of muse -- but when it only happens specifically when you're nearing the 80-90% complete mark, what do?
I'm pushing myself through it of course -- nothing will stop me from gettin' shit done -- but jeez it's painful at times. I'm thinking maybe I need new background noise to keep me inspired? New music or movies, maybe?
Any thoughts? ;___;

Question -- Art sizing?
Posted 12 years agoHey guys! :3
I've been wondering, what size do you expect the final piece of art to be, when you request art (whether it's a commission, trade, etc)? Alternatively, what image/canvas size do you normally send out when giving art to others?
I'm wondering if I should start working bigger, or maybe even smaller. Just curious to see what you guys think on the matter! :D
--
And a big thank you, by the way, for all the awesome suggestions on my last journal! I definitely have a nice big list of things to try out, now! I think SAI is at the top, I may invest in it soon.

Photoshop Alternatives, suggestions?
Posted 12 years agoHey guys!
So with the new cloud crap coming up, I'm thinking about switching to a new painting program. Of course I wouldn't need to give up Photoshop anytime soon, but I'd like to find a new program and get comfortable with it before that time comes.
I do have a fairly limited budget, but I might be able to make it stretch if it's worth the price.
I'm currently playing with the trial version of SAI, but I definitely miss the more advanced things Photoshop can do (no gradientssss whaaat?)...
So, what are your thoughts? <3

Artist Spotlight: Oouna
Posted 12 years agoInternet down
Posted 12 years agoSo as of a few hours ago my Internet went down, and we're not sure why. I'm posting this from my phone; I thought I would use a bit of my 3G to let you guys know what's going on, since I have no idea when service will be back up.
I'll keep you posted! <3
And it's back up! :D Phew.
What would you like to see from me?
Posted 12 years agoI always love to hear from you guys what you think about my art and the way I do things. I posted a journal similar to this a few years ago, on my old account, and got some really great feedback!
But since so much time has passed and my art has changed, I thought I'd ask again! I'll be posting the same journal on my adult account as well.
So!
- What would you like to see pop up in your "new submissions" tab from me?
- What do you think I need to work more on / improve on?
- What's your favorite thing about my art?
Feel free to answer any or all of the above questions, and also take this time to ask me any questions you've ever wanted to ask. :3

Question for commissioners -- and back again!
Posted 12 years agoMy anniversary was wonderful! :3 My husband and I had a lovely day together. So now it's back to work! My commissioners can expect updates today; I will try my best to get around to everyone by tonight.
I did have a question for those of you who have or might commission art (from me, or anyone else).
Do you prefer public commission queues?
I generally make it a practice to keep my commission queue private, as I tend to find it rather an unnecessary thing to have made public, and I know some commissioners don't like having it made public knowledge that they're commissioning someone. However, over the past couple of years it seems to have become practically a standard among those selling commissions.
So would you prefer to see a public commission queue, or would you rather I kept the information private?
Have a lovely day! <3

Day off today!
Posted 12 years agoHey all! <3 I will likely be drawing today (May 16th, 2013) -- however, it won't be very much because today is my 2nd anniversary! :3
So I just wanted to let you guys know that I'll likely be quite busy for today. You can expect updates tomorrow!

Commission Testimonials!
Posted 12 years agoHere you will find testimonials written by those who have worked with me in the past!
I commissioned my first character sheet from The Owlette. We corresponded over email, where she patiently showed and explained the WIP drawings at every step of the way and let me have as much creative control as I wanted. She takes constructive criticism very well. The Owlette is also quite creative. Give her some creative license and be pleasantly surprised. Her illustration quality meets my fickle whims, and you’ll love her too!

owlette's prices and examples speak for themselves, but suffice it to say that I am extremely pleased with how great the artwork is I'm getting for the value. Of course, that's all well and good, but in a community like this, the important thing is the service, right?
Owlette has to be one of my absolute favorite people I've ever commissioned, as far as niceness and service. (The only other people I've commissioned who even come close as far as what total sweethearts they are would be Gravewalker, Slug, and Celia Souris.) she is an extreme professional, and has no problem whatsoever making things right. Yes, most commissions have a "make a sketch, get feedback, modify the sketch" phase as part of standard operating procedure, but Owlette was noticeably and strikingly enthusiastic about it. Even when I was a little hesitant, myself (I have some self-confidence issues, and I always struggle to bring myself to point things out because I don't want to nitpick or anything) she actually comforted me and helped me express that. She wanted to hear what could be fixed, and she absolutely would not rest until I was satisfied.
"Satisfied" is an understatement, by the way, because the end results were (NSFW!) http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9644784/ and (also NSFW!) http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9667826/ , and if you think those are stunning (which they are!) you should se the high-res versions. Personal recommendation: get the fancy finished full detail painting option when you commission her, because my God.

theowlette is my favorite artist to commission for a variety of reasons.
First of all, and most importantly, her quality of work is outstanding. She crafts highly detailed pieces that clearly show she cares about the quality of her work and the satisfaction of her customer. She works with high motivation, and is disciplined, qualities other artists may want to address. For each of the works I commissioned, she gets so excited about being able to work with you that it gets you even more excited about your own idea! She communicates well with me, is open to any changes I request (even though sometimes I was being unclear, she doesn't appear to mind at all) and also puts forward her own ideas if you let her. Extremely patient, and doesn't mind redo-ing the same bit over and over again.. I mean, I'm sure she gets a little bothered but there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that that is the case.
Her current offers are very fair, and is exactly what I would pay for the quality received. She also allows many characters for a single slot, which is an encouragement for people who are looking for a group pic. Let's be reasonable here, groups are way cooler than pin-ups! She works quickly, I have never had to wait longer than a few days for an update, and allows for separated payments!
Interestingly, when I first met her over a year ago, she wouldn't actually draw porn. I made her draw Zi's boobies, and it wasn't long until thenaughtyowlette thenaughtyowlette was born. I like to think I had something to do with it, but probably not!
Lastly, she actually draws more kinks than you may think. In fact, she says she'll actually draw anything. Now, I respect her too much to ask her to draw scat porn.. but.. hehehehehe. Maybe in a year. c:

1000 Watchers Get -- Also new daily plan
Posted 12 years ago1000 Watchers awwww yis! B) I love you guys! <333 I'm so happy to know you guys like my art.
My 1000th watcher is getting a little somthin' special, just because 1000 watchers yeah!
In other news, my husband got me a book as a gift -- "Breaking Into Freelance Illustration". It is amazing. D: I'm already hooked, it's a great little book with lots of great pointers!
One of the things it mentioned, to keep mojo going strong, was to take 1 hour of each day to paint (or craft) something for myself. So I'll be trying to do that -- which means I may have some more personal art starting to show up in my gallery soon! (Or I might just scrap it all and never show anyone the atrocity of what one hour of work truly is... we'll see. :P)
For my beloved commissioners (and the one blessed heart who's waiting patiently on me to finish our collab), no need to worry that this will effect my work time. I'll be taking the hour out of my personal time. :3

My birthday!~
Posted 12 years agoSo today was my birthday, and it was awesome! :D
A few days ago my mom took me out for dinner and gave me an early present -- a freakin' Intuos5 touch! WOW. And it's HUGE. I am in love with this thing!! It's so sleek and amazing and jesus thank you. ;w; I always thought it'd be me and my tiny old duct-taped trooper of an Intuos3 until the end of time, but I guess I was wrong.
My grandmother bought me a blanket. Few know how deep my obsession with collecting blankets truly is -- but trust me when I say, it is getting to the point where I would not be surprised to find myself on an episode of Hoarders for the sheer amount of blankets I own. But I need more... ALWAYS, MORE... So yes, I very much appreciated this donation to the bank of Owlette's weird quirks.
She also brought a book. Good lord, if there's one thing I have more of than blankets, it's books. But god I love books. This one was Elizabeth I by Alison Weir. Another obsession of mine aside from blankets and books -- Anne Boleyn and her daughter Elizabeth I. I already have the six wives of Henry VIII by the same author, and I've been wanting to read this one.
Anyway, tonight Hubby took me out to dinner at my favorite place and we had a few drinks.
It's been my favorite birthday so far. :>
I guess tomorrow night we're going out again with some of his coworkers... ("What about your friends?" you may ask. To which I reply, "LOL FRIENDS.") Hopefully it'll be fun. c:

Guess who got glasses??
Posted 12 years agoOh my god. I never knew the world was so .. clear. D8
And I never knew I was so blind.
So I'm wearing glasses now. I was absolutely mortified to realize that my art does not look anything like what I thought it did. So.. hopefully I should be able to improve now that everything isn't a giant blur.
Also my face.. oh my face.. Humans are so hideous. Jesus christ. When I put on my glasses and looked in the mirror I just about burst into tears. Yeah... so I guess flawless skin isn't so flawless when all you see isn't one big peach blob.
Hubby's computer was fixed.. but it started having another issue once we got it home, so it's off to the shop again. Luckily the guys at the shop were nice enough to foot the bill, so we should be good on finances this month. I really hope Hubby's computer gets fixed for good soon... then I'll be able to work full time on my art, rather than having to share a PC with him.
Anyway, I'm off to browse more art, now that I can actually see it. :D

Almost 22!
Posted 12 years agoGood gracious, I can hardly believe it... I still feel like I'm 16! D:
My birthday's on the 19th, I'll be turning 22!
I've been sick for the past few days, but thankfully I'm feeling much better today. Art production slowed over the last week, but will be picking back up now that I'm flu-free. x3
I took my rescued Dachshund Jack to the dog park today, and I was pretty proud of the little booger! A few months ago he was terrified of strangers; today he ended up making a few new friends. It's been a lot of hard work, but it's good to finally see some improvement.

Account Converging! (Old images uploaded)
Posted 12 years agoI apologize for any inconvenience as I upload images from my old account onto this one!
I've been noticing that my old account has continued to collect watchers and favorites, which is rather silly given that it's an inactive account. So I've begun the process of converging the two galleries, something I should have done long ago!
Hold tight! Thanks for your patience. :3
