PODcast September 2013
Posted 12 years agoHello, all!
I would like to start off this month's PODcast by apologizing for the lack of activity!
From this journal onward, this account will be updated twice a month, at a MINIMUM.
To have good content, though, I will need your help! Whenever you find a good video or (recent) news article cetacean-related, don't hesitate to leave a shout with the link!
I will make sure to include it in the upcoming PODcast and you'll be credited for finding it!
That goes for art as well! If you have or stumble across any cetacean-related art that isn't already in the favourites, link me and I'll add it!
Today's video is brought to you by
DarkTaggr !
I think the video really shows just how intelligent cetaceans are, and it's a little heart warming <3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL9I4BxuryY
That's all for today, guys, but remember, if you find any good articles or videos, and even art, just leave a shout and we'll share it!

ATTENTION POD! Blackfish on CNN!
Posted 12 years agoHello, my pod-fellows! I have a few quick announcements for you today!
By a show of fins, who has yet to see Blackfish? Probably a good handful of you, since the screenings were few and far between.
Those of you who did see it though, good, I'm glad you were able to!
I myself have yet to see it, and have heard very mixed reviews, claiming it's biased and such, but I would like to watch it for myself.
I believe (but I may be mistaken), that it releases on DVD in the US in November?
I know it is already out in Europe, though. But if you're like me, and don't want to wait til November, here's a bit of good news!
BLACKFISH will be shown on CNN on October, 24th at 9pm EST.
At least, that is true to the best of my knoweledge.
I know I will be tuning in, and whether you're pro-cap, anti-cap, or just pro-whale, I encourage you to watch the film.
I also know a few people here on FA have been streaming it, and if you plan on doing so, please let me know so I can post a journal and spread the word!

BLACKFISH movie details!
Posted 12 years agoI'm sure by now, most of you have heard of the movie that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival titled Blackfish.
The movie is about the tragic story of Tillikum, the famous bull orca residing at SeaWorld, Orlando.
He is responsible for the death of Dawn Brancheau, the late seniour trainer at Shamu Stadium, and supposedly two others over the course of his life.
Blackfish is said to be one of the single most powerful films to ever address the issue of animal captivity, and it is to be released in movie theaters nation-wide on July 19th.
A new trailer has recently been released and it can be viewed HERE .
I will comment my personal opinions below.

Quick little announcement!
Posted 12 years agoYAY KASATKA GAVE BIRTH AND THE CALF IS HEALTHY!
Her gestation period was longer than normal and everyone was worried, pro and anti captivity alike, but the calf is beautiful and healthy and everything seems to be going quite swimmingly ;3
Here is a link with more info <3
What an awesome Valentine's Day. I know that I was definitely worried that it was going to be stillborn, since they kept pushing the due date back further and further.

January 2013 PODcast (haha, get it?)
Posted 13 years agoPODcast... Like a POD of whales... Get it?
.....
Okay, bad joke, I understand :P
Before I post the articles for this month, I just want to say thank you to everyone who signed the petition for Kshamenk and helped spread the word. Before I posted that here on FA, it had barely 600 signatures, and now it's over 1,300. That is DOUBLE what it was before. I know you guys directly didn't sign 600 more times, but it is because of you that this is possible. Every single person with their name on that petition is a hero in the making, so again, thank you<3
If you haven't signed yet, PLEASE DO SO NOW.
Now for some articles! I know the one I posted last month, I messed up the coding for, but let's hope I get it right this time!
Is Taiji FINALLY coming to it's senses? Japanese citizens are beginning to speak out against whaling. Back in November, the nation's first open opposition group Action for Marine Mammals marched in Tokyo with signs and megaphones. More people are opening their eyes! This is really a great thing, since commercial whaling has been going on it Japan for generations, and according to this article, even some of the money donated to the country to help cover damages from the 2011 tsunami was used for whaling.
This year, at the Sundance Film Festival, a new documentary-style film goes behind the scenes with one of the most misunderstood orcas in all of captivity, Tilikum. "Blackfish" is said to be shocking and eye-opening, as it features never-before-seen footage and interviews about Tilikum and his dark past. Now, to my knowledge, you can't watch the film yet, but there is a feature on the Sundance site where you can put in your email and they'll let you know when/where you can. I have found a short trailer for it, though, which features the eerie 911 calls from the day Dawn Brancheau died at SeaWorld. Big thanks to Larka for shouting to us about this<3
This next article is about a year old, but still pretty great. This video here shows just how smart our cetacean friends really are. A trapped orca seemed to know it wasn't in any trouble when a diver came to save her.
In other news, SeaWorld is expected to soon open stocks to the public.
Blue whales have been found to roll around to help sneak up on krill
Killer whales trapped in ice in Quebec have been freed.
Dolphins off the coast of California "stampede" right over a whale-watching boat.
Winter, the dolphin with the prosthetic tail, gets a new tank mate
And that wraps up this PODcast, haha.
If you guys ever find any articles or have any sort of new you'd like to share, just leave a shout here and I'll be sure to share it with the group. Thanks so much for another great month, guys, and thanks again for signing the petition for Kshamenk. Remember to spread the word!

eccentricpaw <3Sorry for the lack of activity + URGENT petition!
Posted 13 years agoHey guys, I'm sorry I've been lazy on posting a newsletter, I'll have the first one of 2013 up later this evening!
First, I would just like to say that I hope you guys are all having a happy and positive year so far! I know I have made a ton of resolutions that I'm kind of slacking on, but I plan on turning things around and getting my butt in gear. I want to do a lot for this group, and I REALLY want to post more updates. I don't know about you guys, but I love reading random articles about whales and dolphins, so I'll be trying to share more with you!
Now, onto business!
I am not sure about your stands on captivity, and even if you are pro-cap, there is a killer whale who REALLY needs our help.
His name is Kshamenk, and he lives in Mundo Marino in Argentina, and he desperately needs out of that tiny tank of his. It is actually the smallest orca tank IN THE WORLD.
He has been living there, mostly alone, for decades. He hasn't bonded with any other animals or trainers, and he is much too old to adjust to captivity. In fact, he was 4-5 years old at the time of capture, meaning he was old enough to fend for himself in the wild, so when they brought him in, he was already a lost cause.
He is hateful and aggressive to humans, and lives on a very poor diet. He lazes around in his pool and is forced to swim upside-down because the hot sun burns his back, as he has absolutely no shade.
Please please please sign this petition. Because he never adjusted to captivity, he still has a chance in the open ocean! Even a sea pen would make a world of a difference to him.
Here is a link to the petition: http://www.causes.com/actions/1720128
I have signed, and I have had everyone in my household do so as well. He is closer to freedom than you think!
Thanks so much guys, and please, help me send Kshamenk home!
If you have any questions or comments or anything, please say so. I am up for answering anything regarding this.

EccentricPawPod Update #16 - Nov/Dec 2012
Posted 13 years agoHey guys, I found some cool links to share with you!
If you're not aware yet, this group is under a new admin, so things will be done a little differently. I'll try to keep the updates kind of in the same format, but I think I'll use number for them rather than months, since sometimes I may post 3 or 4 a month, and sometimes I may only post 1.
I found a few cool articles that haven't been shared here yet, so take a look!
First and foremost, and you haven't yet, PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION . It is very important that you do, and if you want to know anything about Morgan, the petition page has all the basic info. She is still very new to captivity so she still has a chance at making it in the ocean. If we wait too long, she could end up like Keiko.
Also on a serious note, How Fishing Gear Is Killing Whales. If you go to the "read more" section, there's a full story about it. Fishing gear isn't the only thing killing off sea life, though. It may seem like common sense, but let me just remind you to recycle whenever you can, because most of the stuff you through away actually ends up in the ocean :/ If you can't or don't recycle, please at least cut up those little rings that come around a 6-pack of cola. Small acts like that can save so many lives, and it only takes you an extra minute or two to do<3
THISis actually a very good and moving video about ocean conservation.
Now, onto the brighter side of things!
The Japanese island of Toshima has officially made their dolphins citizens . The goal of this project is not only to educate about how to protect wild dolphins, but also to make it known that cetaceans and humans are friends, and can live together in peace. We as people need to respect that dolphins are wild animals, though.
Here's a small article about NOC, a captive beluga whale who recently made some vocalizations that sound... surprisingly human.
A whale only ever seen as bones is found on the coast on New Zealand
A rare white humpback whale discovered off the coast or Norway
Birth of a killer whale is celebrated at Nagoya Aquarium.
So that's it for news this time! If you guys have any articles you would like submitted, send me a note and I'll review it.
Oh, and one last thing before I go...
I found this on Tumblr this morning and thought it would make a really good gift idea for the holidays, no? The tail is also a flash drive<3
Til next time~

eccentricpaw <3Say hello to the new admin!
Posted 13 years agoMe :D
Haha, hello, my name is Jayson, but some of you may know me as
eccentricpaw <3
I was chosen as the new admin for this group, and I'll do my very best running it. A few things may change (like the journal updates), and if you guys ever have any suggestions for how things should be done, feel free to say something. I'm going to need help finding links and articles and such for the journals, so just note me and I'll post them each month.
I also plan on making mini-posts whenever there's big news somewhere. I know a lot more about captive cetaceans than I do wild ones, so that's mostly what I'll be talking about, but again, feel free to submit any info you see fit. It's really appreciated<3
Oh, and I want to submit more!
If you guys have any art (that you own the rights to) that you wanted submitted, leave a shout or something and I'll post it for you. Any photography, anything like that. I plan on using some of my own art in there as well :3
Uhhhh, so yeah! That's about it. If there's anything I left out, just let me know x3

POD special announcement - SHARK WEEK
Posted 13 years agoHello everyone, it's
azalea and I before I bring you the newest cetacean newsletter next week, here is a friendly reminder that it is
SHARK WEEK
yet again!
We are not a shark community, but of course we stand by every ocean creature, especially our finned brothers and sisters who could always use some help to get rid of their unjustified bad reputation. Did you know that you are more likely to be struck by lightning than to be attacked by a shark?! Do you know what shark finning is and why we should fight to stop it? Why don't you use shark week to educate yourself and other people around you how awesome these (mostly very endangered!) animals are?
A helpful website:

A real cool infographic with amazing sharkie facts:

An important infographic on shark finning:

- See you next week!
azalea and I before I bring you the newest cetacean newsletter next week, here is a friendly reminder that it is SHARK WEEK

POD announcement - newsletter hiatus
Posted 13 years agoHi everyone, it's
azalea
I obviously don't have the time to keep the monthly newsletters coming right now, having way too much to do with university papers, classes, projects, etc.
The newsletter will go on a hiatus until probably July, when my last university classes end.
Thanks for your understanding,
Aza
