The Mind of the Solid Tomcat
Posted 15 years agoGreetings my loyal and devoted followers,
It has been nearly four months since I have updated this journal and I do have much to update. I am in the middle of three major writing projects. "To Morn the Fallen" is coming to a close, I am working on "The Winds of Change" which I am still compiling notes on before I start the draft and I am co-writing a new story with a good friend, due to this I will admit my art has taken second seat but do know that I plan on putting more up very soon - all good things are worth the wait.
In my pursuit to keep the promise to my Grandmother whom passed in July to do something practical with my skills, I have started "Tomcat Media of Wooster", a photography and media venture to which I do portraits and advertising to help myself out while I work on my stories and the infamous comic "True" which is still coming believe me. If you want to see my work on Facebook @ Keyword: Tomcat Media
till I get a site up and running on its own.
I have been having lots of fun medical wise, I am almost convinced now that my left ankle is now a permanent issue that won't be going away, leaving me to walk to a cane for the rest of my life, but I can still battle, just for short periods, sigh. As I grow older I am all to familiar with my limitations but all I can think about is how to break them - hopefully without breaking my neck.
On a side note: Rest in peace Pervy Sage, you will be missed and honored

Meow to the World and Lay in its Clean Laundry
Posted 16 years agoGreetings faithful followers of The Tomcat -
I have been hard at work bringing forth the images and stories that flood my mind, trying to finish a couple stories and edit a third as well as work on a wonderful convention coming to Wooster OH this September
http://www.kitsunecon.com/
which I am working as the Art Director for in and am currently running a Art Contest for our mascot. If you are into anime and can get here you should check it out for you could meet The Tomcat in person :)
Trying some new techniques and am also looking into doing more anime, been dabbling and think I can do well in time. Also looking into going back to school to get my Graphic Art degree, fun stuff.
On the job front, I am now driving a cab here in this quaint city of mine, fun job with plenty of time to draw (this is after I am having been trying to ink the same picture for three days...lol)
I am open to request.
Commissions are open.
Will do art for Meow Mix...

I'm Still Here
Posted 16 years agoMy dear watchers I am happy to tell you no, I have not falling into a hole, but I have got my self stuck playing MGS4 and Bioshock at the same time while writing in my spare time.
I need to do some art, so if you have any art request now would be the time. Also, the commissions are open if interested but I am not feeling much like a salesman today.
Don't worry and meow.

- When did you start drawing?
Since I was six, something I did to relax when I was not trying to blowing up GI Joes or tramping through the woods. I was always fascianted with robots and cyborgs,
- Which hand do you use for drawing?
Both, but it looks better with my right.
- Which is easier to draw - male or female?
Depends on the pose, its hard to draw a man in lingerie, everything binds. Females are easier simply because I like drawing cute stuff.
- Which is easier to draw - long hair or short hair?
I can do either one, but it depends on what style I am going for too, if its more fantasy then the longer is awesome, realistic, short works.
- Is it easier to draw the head facing towards the right or the left?
I am partial to both though I probably tend to draw more toward the right just because of habit.
- Is it easier to draw the side view of the face or the front view?
Side view, pics never look quite right when you do them head on for me, I always try at least a slight angle, though I have also had that drilled in my head by my Sempai too...
- What do you have problems in drawing?
Squash and Stretch proportions. Don't ask me why but I just have a hell of time with getting the proportions dead on even with Poser and refereces, I think my brain is mis=wired somehow.
- What do you like to draw?
Couples and Cute Romance stuff are my main stays, Love doing pics involving water and also I am trying to capture the dramatic scene which is science all its own.
- Are you a traditional artist or a digital artist?
I am traditional all the way when it comes to my art. Though I do digital design on the side with a mouse (the horror!)
If anyone wants to donate me a tablet I wouldn't turn it down.
- Where do you start drawing from?
A blank part of the page.....
I usually like to start with the head and eyes, I put most of my concentration on the face in the first stages, everything flows out from there.
- What is your drawing habit that you are aware of?
I tend to go for the cutie side of art, I was always fascinated by Michelle Light's work when I first started anthro and it grew out from there. I try to convey a lot of emotion with my work, sadly I go from cute to goth pretty quick art wise, (I'm a art goth, ha).
- Any tips for coloring/shading?
Yeah, I would love some. I ussually do not worry about it too much unless I am doing a high detail piece where I would say always know how the light will react with your character, Poser is awesome for this.
- How long does it take to finish a piece of art?
It all depends on what kind of piece I am doing at the time, if its a simple pose piece then maybe 45-60 minutes for a simple one. For my more complex ones at least two hours between inking and clearing.
- What music do you listen to while you draw?
I am big fan of sound tracks, like right now I am listining to "The Last Samurai", a common set for me to play. I like soft and emotional instrumentals, I also listen to Les Miserable, Phantom of the Opera, and Mama Mia but I usually get distracted by singing along and wondering why my cats are glaring at me.
- How long does it take you to come up with an idea?
I am always thinking of ideas for days at a time then I will just sit down and make a day of getting them out of my head, (like I did yesterday). Now when it comes to request I usually take a few hours of meditation and thought before I sketch out the ideas till I get one I like. So I guess it really depends.
- Your favorite drawing utensils?
My Tri-Tip eraser, the best little investment I made, great for mass clearing and for color blending though I noticed yesterday it also likes to eat away at archival ink.... I am also a big fan of celcian blue lead which I need to pick some more up.
- Your favorite color/the color that you use a lot?
Green, more specifically shades of green, I am big fan of foliage. Though blue is a close second, the color of water.
- Your favorite style(s)?
I don't know if I really have one par say. I do what comes natural.
- Are you satisfied with your current art?
Yes and no, I wish I could do more with less. I want to be more realistic and not so freaking cartooney,
- What kind of artist are you aiming for?
I want to be better then I was yesterday....
Tagging, hmmm....
All of FA, if you want to do this then go for it.

New Styles
Posted 16 years agoAs many have probably noticed I having been pushing out artwork this week hand over fist and it has been better then my usual stuff, well, I hope it keeps up this way. I have been messing around a lot with some new pencils and paper techniques that seem to be making a large difference, also I have begun using more reference materials and stock photos to work on my posing and structures, seems to be making all the difference.
Am considering getting back into some photography again this spring, found some really nice areas that I think could make for some delightful shoots if I can just talk my wife into it. Something to look out for.
Oh, "Obsidian Road" is now available on Amazon.com for purchase, it has some of the best stories your ever going to read so pick one up and make this cat purr....

The End of Yet Another Era

Watchmen
Posted 16 years agoHow does one explain a experience that is unlike anything you have ever experienced before. How do you express marrying the woman you truly love, the birth of your first child, your first kiss, your last kiss. How do you put these things into words that even coming close to expressing how you feel?
That is what WATCHMEN was like for me this night.
I am writer, and even a little bit of a poet but words fail me for the first time. You don't watch this, you absorb it bit by bit as it tears into your soul living only a quite hush of awe and wonder as you reflect on the deep pool of memory and heart you just created deep in the blackness of our mind.
I would usually write a short synopsis of a excellent movie but this one blew away the scale completely, I am going back to see it again just to try to catch it all, this time with my wife whom I wish went with me this time.... stupid headaches.
Just see it, The Tomcat is never wrong. Trust me.

Happy Kitty
Posted 17 years agoThat's right, I am one bouncing fur ball of joy right now because I am now finally in possession of my three favorite things, (other then Sally and string). I got myself a Samsung HDTV, a PS3, and Metal Gear Solid 4 alas.
Now I do know that almost everyone else out there has already had this for a while but the Tomcat has made a career of coming up from behind, lol. Now I have to do is hook it up and beat the games before my hands get tired from old age and holding children and the controller at the same time :)
And before anyone ask, I am not going to be online right away with my Team Fortress game, too much hassle to rework my network for that so going to have to game without me for a while till I invade the PSNet and wreck havoc on you all. :}

Mental Exhaustion
Posted 17 years agoAt approximately 1am this morning, January 28th alas I finally inked the final page of the first issue of True at last :D
Been working on the last three pages since about six and I finally got them done with a great sigh of relief and a aching hand. The hard part is finally over I am so happy to say. Now just comes the final preps.
Did start inking my latest works, including my "The Spa" commission which I am particularly proud of, and "The Rum" which also turned out better then expected.
After I finish the inking on the others and the second half of the commission I will be taking a well earned break for a short time, just to recoup and come up with some new ideas.
If anyone is interested in commissions or art trades I am open for it but may take me a little longer then usual due to my break. Not to mention my surgery which I am actually needing to schedule.

The End of Long Journey Approaches
Posted 17 years agoI am nearly complete with "True" Issue One, so close in fact that late this evening I should have cleared the final page and have complete the set at last of this complete revised addition that has gone much faster then the first round.
There is still work to be done on it but the artwork would be complete, though we do need someone to digitally color the cover, if interested for a descent price note me.
I have had to push to get this done due to a recently discovered complication which will force me once again into a minor surgery. I can face down the minions of darkness for days at time but my heavy sword and pencil have taken its toll on my wrist, yup, I need to get Carpal Tunnel surgery within the next few weeks once they schedule me. Oh joy of joys - that would be a week of my life gone.
Side note: All my newest submissions will be inked and re-posted within the next dew days after I complete the comic. The artwork was done during a long day at work and will be finished soon but I was just so damn happy with it I posted it up early.

2009
Posted 17 years agoI have always been a big fan of New Years, a chance to make a fresh start every 365 days, if only in my mind. But this year will truly be different for me, this year the hard work pays off and my first works will be leashed upon a awaiting public!
Right now am working overtime on getting the pages complete and even have some artwork for adds done that we will be using as drop-ins and mailers, good stuff.
Was going through some very hard times due to some really bad choices but alas I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, (but don't know why the metal rods are shaking...)
Have been watching and playing a lot of Metal Gear series, including MGS4, making me cry again damn't! I swear, Kojima is my freaking icon of perfection. Expect art.

The CAT is BACK!
Posted 17 years agoI am now once more back online and how good it feels to have a connection again. Like welcoming back a long lost friend, lol.
In my time off I have come to a conclusion, for one, I am making a resolution to commission
dingbat sometime this year, I must see how she would draw me and Tika, I just have to know!
I am open to art trades and commission right now, just ask about prices.
I am rededicating myself to improving my art and finishing True, its now only a matter of time. The pages look WONDERFUL I tell ya.
If your a cover artist, or ever wanted to try cover art, note me.
The Tomcat is back and better then ever, prepare for the fur to fly!

Posted 17 years agoIt has actually been two freaking months since I have lost the my internet and have not uploaded anything on here, GOD you all must think I'm dead or something! And no one wrote me either... the Tomcat is disheartened by this... (actually I could care less so screw it)
TuesdaY I shall make me triumphnet return to the net with a crap load of new art that will burn the clothes from your very fur for I shall have my connection back and would have to roam no more.
There will be attonement to faithful and kitty litter for everyone else

Upload this Week
Posted 17 years agoI know that I have kept you all in angst waiting for me to update with my newest art pieces that I have been working on and well... your going to have to wait one or two more days for my mass data upload of new and awesome work.
I have to reconnect my tower to my home system to scan and prepare the pieces and then will flash drive it to a local connection so that the pieces can be shared.
(Its such a pain in a half to lose the net....grumble...)
Your patience will be rewarded I assure you.

I Invented the Eight Day Work Week
Posted 17 years ago... and I tell you I have never been happier.
Its official The Tomcat is now at last moving up the ladder with a better posting and title, no longer am I a lowly personal aide, for now I am a traveling "Home Health Aide", only took three years.... though I did discover a problem in my travels, I have absolutely no sense of direction. Lost three visits Monday, my third freaking day because I was on the wrong side of the county.... twice. (grumble)
So my loving and very directionally savvy wife Sally gave me two options, either I could have her ride along with me all day. Tempting but boring for her. Or I could breakdown and pick up a GPS with one of my acid filled store credit cards that I love a little too much.
It was a tough choice and I pondered it for several moments. (For a cat - that's a eternity I tell ya.) And I came up with my answer that makes everyone happy.
I am now a traveling feline Home Health Aide with GPS navigation :) I am also now very much in debt... buy my book.....PLEASE!! I am one of the three most awesome writers.

The Rumors of my death...
Posted 17 years agoYeah, I am stil around, just got stuck between internet services since I am switching to cable after becoming completly annoyed by my DSL. I mean I get a call from a telemarketer, and it crashes my net connection... and during a political season in Ohio you can imagine the calls.
Will have something in my own office before too long, till then I am a net driffter forced to use tiny straight keyboards which my paws are unacustom too....
In update, all my art operations have been moved to next door to the offical Adriam Comics location and now I must get myself organized. Have some new art to scan and post once I get back online but am working again on True after a month hiatus...
Oh and Obsididan Road is now for sale, contact me for details if interested. Adds coming soon.

A Strange Defeat
Posted 17 years agoJust watched the end of Code Geass R2 and somehow they surpassed my expectations once again and wrote in a final twist that brought me to tears comparable to the death of Aeris in FF7.
For those whom have not seen it I will not give detail but rather my highest recommendation. The Tomcat approves.
In other news, I have both gained a awesome opportunity and was for the first time defeated in combat all in the same night. Yesterday, while at work of all the places.
I can't go into the opportunity till I get it cleared for announcement but I can tell you that last night, my raging client actually sent me to the hospital, ironic that all day I was watching "House" and "Untold Stories of the ER".
It has only confirmed my choice to get out of the Home Care franchise which I have done for nearly three years now working with MRDD whom before now, was a great pleasure. Now its literally a major pain in my foot.

Deep in Thought
Posted 17 years agoRecent conversations and events have lead me down a train of thought that I have found most engulfing and after watching the latest Code Geass R series it just came to a conclusion of sorts that feels as if it is riddled with questions...
I have always believe that life is not worth living if you do not have something that is worth dying for, yet in recent times I have found myself engaged in a feudal attempt to keep both my future and my failed past alive simultaneously, that I would not have to let go but yet still move on but that very thing is what is killing me inside, the conflict that I made to end that very same conflict (that will twist your brain for a while).
I keep trying to hold on to a past in which I failed in nearly every way possible and went across the country to start over, only to return a year later and start literally from scratch and now I am sitting in the result of that new life, but I still want the old one. Why the hell is that for? That has been the question, but tonight after years of asking I finally know.
I didn't want to admit defeat.... I know that I lost but I didn't want to acknowledge that I had failed in my mission so I made up my own reality but no more.
The past sucks when you take away the blinders of shadow and replace it with the harsh light of truth. But only when you clean the wound completely will it begin to heal....
If you are having this problem take it from me right now, just face it and be done, there is nothing to be gained from saving a sinking ship, even if your life is aboard it all things can be replaced, even people.
