See our current ID? Would you like to be part of the NEW one? Participate in this year's art contest! Submit your NEW design, or a Spring-y version of a character you already have made, and 3 winners will get drawn and included in the new TheToyBox ID! The theme? SPRING! Maybe you'll want to design a plushie chicken with floral print? Or a BJD bunny with pastel colors? As long as it is inspired by SPRING, it counts! You can submit as a full-body colored sketch, or make a full ref with all their favorite things on it! As long as it's in color and full-body, it qualifies :) At least 6 entries must be submitted for judging to begin. This contest ends FEB 15th, which means you have LOTS of time! Get to designing!! :D Submit your entry via note! You may post the new character, or submit it to us - either way, it will be posted in the gallery and winners will be chosen based on effort, art quality and creativity. :)

Prize art/ID will be completed by the first day of Spring, March 20th 2017!

For the art challenge, I thought it would be fun for us to do some concept art of what kind of house our toy characters might live in! Do you have a plushie character? Maybe a soft, cushy house with lots of stitches and patches is in order! Is your toy character a robot? Lots of wall sockets and compartments for tools and repairs! See most recent submission for a doodle I did for inspiration if desired. :) No due date or anything, but I'm really excited to see what you guys might come up with, and if I expand on this little toy world, I'd likely wind up drawing your idea in ^^

...gets said character drawn by me (Vera)! It will be at least a flat-colored bust. THE TRICK IS, it has to be a full-body (pref. front & back), and at least flat-colored with some personality details added in for inspiration! I'll also post it to the group, and if you're not already a member, this will make you one (no obligations expected; the only requirement to being a member is having at least one toy character submitted to the group gallery).

And remember, it doesn't have to be plushie! It can be a ball-jointed doll, toy robot, wind-up doll, battery-operated or solar-powered flying or swimming toy, jack-in-the-box, 3-d puzzle, a toy that can transform, an inflatable, puppet, something with a bank, musical instrument or pin cushion built in, a marionette... heck, even a set of building blocks that form a creature when put together. Get creative!

If more than one person replies, I'll try to doodle them, too! Let's get some new toy characters made for the new year! ^^

I'll be extremely disappointed if this is all that comes of this and will probably never hold an exchange or contest again :/ I attempted to update this several times this month, but FA was either down or journals weren't working, bleh..

FINALLY sent out everyone's assignments! Whew, this was tougher to do than I thought! Sorry this will start 5 days late; hopefully a month is still enough time for everyone! And hopefully I sent all the notes right. D:

I apologize for it not being as much of a "surprise" by setting up the trades in pairs; it was really difficult to plan it any other way. I'm not sure how people do it unless by doing it completely at random... I think I'll do that next time rather than quality control. I just wanted them to be as fair as possible for the art being offered. How would you guys prefer it be done next time?

Remember the ID I made here? I'm going to be doing a new one for the new year, only this time the 3 winners will be chosen, and less at random! This time, you enter yourself in the contest by submitting a NEW art piece (either of an existing toy character or an entirely new one, as long as it's a toy that belongs to you and of the toy character that you would like to be featured in the new toy box!) either exclusively to the gallery, or to your own, or both!

FULL RULES:

- Submit a new, fully-colored, full-body picture of your own toy character. Must be drawn or crafted in some way, as long as it's visual art created by you. You may post it to your own gallery or submit it to be posted exclusively to our gallery here. Either way it will be posted here and added to the "contest submissions" gallery folder by the end of the contest.
- Entrants will be listed below once I acquire the completed art (please note it to me on my MAIN account, VERA). I will be posting them as they come in, starting December 5th. The 3 winners will be chosen by vote in each submission and voting will only go on for a few days after the end of the contest, so the sooner you get your entry in, the more likely it will be that you'll get more votes! Dec. 5th will be the soonest I'll begin posting, however.
- Entries will be due DECEMBER 20TH. This means you have UP TO 8 WEEKS! But again, consider submitting sooner than this so that you have a higher chance of winning! Judging will end on DECEMBER 23RD and prize art will be completed by JANUARY 1ST!
- The 3 winners get their character featured in the ID for at least 6 months (as drawn by me, Vera) as well as additional art by others who volunteer (volunteers listed below)!

I thought it would be fun to do an art exchange dealie here! This will involve you making a piece of artwork for someone else in the group while getting art in return. You don't know who you'll be drawing for or who you'll get art from!

This will be G-rated. The art should be fully-rendered work that isn't too loose or unrefined or on lined paper. It can be digital, traditional (provide a good scan!), traditional sculpture or even a hand-made toy! The exchange will be lightly quality-controlled to be as fair as possible. Don't tell anyone who you're drawing for, wouldn't want to ruin the surprise!

RULES: (entry form is below!)
To participate, you must be a member (just +watch and note asking to join) and have at least one toy character of which is posted to the group (just link me to the submission via note and I'll post it, credits of course, with a link back to your submission for comments/faves). Easy! If you have no image references, you'll at least need to submit a description, which will be put HERE.) If you do not yet have a description/image of your character, please make one by Nov. 14th, as that is when sign-ups close!

If your received art does not turn out the way you'd hoped, you can work with the artist to get it right, but please don't be too picky, especially if they have to work from a description rather than a visual reference. I was thinking... I don't have time to make a new contest just yet, but perhaps this is something you guys would like to do... a project for writers as well as artists! Writers would write a short story that somehow involves toys (characters made up specifically for the story, no existing ones) and have an artist illustrate one or more images of it for the group! You'd have to describe the character at least a little to give some inspiration for the artists to illustrate, and describe the atmospheres as well :) It could be about toys in a toy store having a party at night... a little girl writing a play for her toys, and they read it while she's asleep so they can then put on a show for her the next day without her having to play pretend with them... or something involving a bunch of toys getting together to construct the perfect toy for their child, collector or whoever. Those are just some ideas, though! Your options are practically limitless! :)

If you'd like to participate, just start writing and then post your results here for artists to check out later. Please bookmark this journal, artists, if you would like to participate! It may take our writers a bit of time to work something out, but keep checking back :) I'd love to see several different interpretations of one story, especially. It would be neat to see how each artist would envision it and the characters!

This journal is for written descriptions of characters that do not yet have any art to visually represent them. They are mere thoughts living within words, without a visual identity. How sad! Perhaps you would be kind enough to use your artistic magic to bring one of these characters to life...?

(doing this mainly as an example)
I have a character in mind that I've not yet drawn. She is a ball-jointed unicorn doll with a (feral) body made of sun-bleached carved and sanded driftwood, with the occasional loose twig. She was made by a skilled craftsman for his child, only to be lost on the beach, where she eventually got struck by lightning. Her mane/tail are transparent and shimmer like rainbowy glass, with random antler-shaped tubes of glass spiking through her hair and down her spine. She has an auger shell for a horn and an orange & white deep sea brittle star who lives just in front of it, its 5 long legs constantly, slowly coiling around her face. When she was struck, her hooves, which had horseshoes made of rock, developed lightning bolt-shaped streaks of exogenic fulgurite that streak up to her knees and elbows. Her main color would be a creamy, sun-bleached beige for the body, darker speckles on her face, shoulders and rump, and teal for her eyes and mouth. She is only doll-sized outside the ocean water, normal horse-sized in brackish water, and when deep within it, she is enormous and her mouth turns into a sea in itself, filled with sea life that she keeps safe within her mouth. A constant song sings from her horn that can be heard for miles throughout the ocean.

When she goes into the very deep, her form takes on a horrifying appearance, even bigger than life and very dark, but still pure and good. I've not yet decided how this form would look, but it definitely would be an embodiment of the creatures and growth found in the deep sea. Perhaps her whole body becomes grayish, her glass tubes go black but still transparent with microscopic creatures living within them that are visible through the glass' magnification. Her hooves could be shaped wider at the bottom, thick and cloggy from gathering rock and debris. She is covered in deep-sea anemones and sea spiders with a mouth that is red inside from the volcanic eruptions within her giant, sea floor-like body.

Is everyone ready for OUR FIRST CONTEST??? :D

THE THEME:
There are actually THREE you can choose from:
1. TOY PRESENTATION!
How would your toy character appear before the child who gets it for Christmas? In a stocking, with a bow under the tree, in a gift basket, hidden under the bed? Or maybe your toy is wrapping itself up to be given to a loved one they already know... it could be a bit flirtatious of a theme for your partner.
2. T'WAS THE NIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS!
What would your toy be doing after Christmas? Would they throw their big red ribbon aside and sneak to get a glass of egg nog from the fridge, or just curl up by their new owner and sleep? Maybe they weren't given to a child, but another toy character, as a new friend created by someone with that rare magic ability to bring toys to life? :)
3. TOY DRESS-UP!
Maybe you'd prefer something more oriented around design and fashion, and want to create a new outfit for your toy? :) They could be just trying it on in front of a mirror, or sewing it directly onto themselves! As long as it's Christmas-themed, go wild :)

Of course, you can also mix 'n match different themes as well! Or, if you have an idea for an extra theme, run it by me and I may add it :)

RULES & INFO:
- PG-13 rating, max.
- This will be judged by three people - myself, and two random people who will not be participating who would like to offer to help me judge. To ensure fairness, I won't be asking my friends or boyfriend to help. If you think you can judge it fairly without leaning more towards someone you may happen to know who enters the contest, please raise your hands!
- The prize is undetermined; but I will say, it depends on how many people enter. If under 10, it may be a small cash prize and sketch by myself or something, but if over 30 (almost all the members!), it will be a larger prize, and there may be a 2nd and possibly 3rd prize! I'll be sure to figure it out for sure by December 1st.
- You don't have to be a member, but you must be okay with me submitting the entries here! They will be moved to scraps after the contest is over, and the winner will have their art as our featured submission until the end of January.
- The winner will be announced only here, and the prize art will be posted only here! Depending on the number of people who enter, we may have a second or even second and third place. The more members, the better the prize and the more winners!
- The art prize may be a simple sketch done by me + money (sent to the winner via paypal ONLY), or it could be several sketches done by myself and a few friends, or it may be a collaboration between myself and a friend or someone else who volunteers! We'll try to figure out the definite prize before the end of the contest!
- Contest ends on Christmas night. You can enter more than once. Try to have your entries in at least a week or two prior to the deadline, just so I know how many people will have entered.
- Art medium can be just about anything... drawings, 3d art, sculpture, toy-making, a comic, an illustrated story, anything! You'll get more points the more impressive it is, obviously!
- You also get more points for multiple characters. You may include any of my toy characters without asking, but please ask others if you want to include them!
- PLEASE DO NOT POST your finished entry to your FA gallery until AFTER the end of the contest. Email/note it to me, I will post it here, and once the contest is over, you can post it to your own galleries. Please only post WIPs or a crop of the finished product with a link to the group, at most. More advertisement, more members, more art, more of a chance for higher-end prizes!! If you do choose to post the finished product, we have no control over that, but you will be disqualified.
- Any questions, just ask! :)

This group is for people who love and adore sentient toys! Be nice to each other, and try to remember to favorite the art at the original artist's submission when possible. Otherwise, they may never read your nice comments! And that would be sad. :c I'd like this group to be a kind of database of everyone's characters! The main gallery will feature one of each character submitted. Scraps will be used for any further art submitted of that character and possibly contest entries. Our mascot is a donkey named Pandy, who was made by me, Vera.

FAQ TIME!
"How can I become a member?"
]You can watch the group and enjoy the posts as a non-member who simply wishes to observe, or you can become a member by sending a note and asking! All I ask is that anyone wishing to become a member at least has their own toy character that would fit in the group. It doesn't have to be drawn yet, as long as there's a good description and the character exists somehow. Every member so far has their own characters posted to the group. But it doesn't have to be a drawing... it can be a sculpture, or even a real-made plush or toy, etc! A ref sheet is preferable, or at least a full-body image that portrays your character best.

"Can I keep sending you art of my character to repost from my own gallery?"
After you've submitted your character, I won't be posting any further art of that specific character UNLESS it is made to be exclusive to the group and is NOT posted to your other gallery, just to try and give it some original content rather than it all being reposts! If you would like the submitted art to be replaced by an updated version, that can be done. You MAY continue to submit ONE image per character if you have more than one! I want to make a database of everyone's toy characters. Posting art exclusively for the group should also bring more attention to us, and get more people to want to watch and hopefully join!

"When will there be a contest/what will it be about/what will we win??"
I'm not sure of this one yet. It will have to be when I have a prize to give. I would like to be able to make a plush for the winner of whatever contest we have in the future, but right now, I don't have many materials for that. But when I do, I will likely either offer my own art, money, a custom plush of the winner's toy character. As for a theme, it's likely that it will be for the best art of Pandy (our mascot) or creating a new toy character, maybe even oriented around a particular type of toy (marionette, wind-up, or something else not so common!).

Hm, I can't think of anything else for now, will add more later~
