vacation
Posted 3 weeks agoI love you guys.
So everyone knows, next week we are off on vacation. The prompt will be hosted then by
walt46 and a big thank you to him for helping out.
Also... a warning to everyone, as I just had an experience that Helix has also warned about: scam artists.
I was contacted by an artist I did not know. They said they loved my last story and wanted to do a picture of the main character. Of course, I was quite happy someone had found that much emotion in something I wrote. I found their FA page recent and empty. Writing back and forth - because I am a trusting soul - I asked straight up if there was money involved, or was this meant as a gift. Yes - money.
So... if this happens to you, don't fall for it. In this day and age, it might not even be a person.

A thought and a question
Posted 2 months agoOn a personal note, I have found writing with a compatible partner brings all sorts of newness to the writing process. Over the years, I have written with a number of others, but the most notable and productive is:
seadragon He and I are like an old worn pair of shoes. One is the left and the other the right, and between us we walk, jog, run, and even dance pretty well. So far we have a full fledge trilogy ready to go and looking for a publisher, as well as in the middle of a Celtic novel.
My thought is to offer something similar to the Thursday Prompt crowd.
My question would then be - who out there is crazy enough to try it?
This now becomes an open forum for ideas on how to do this. Obviously, there are pros and cons. For instance - you really, really, need to be compatible with your counterpart. I cannot stress that enough.
Personally, I would suggest four to eight pages. One writer begins, and then emails the page to their counterpart, they do a page, and then send it back. It goes back and forth until finished.
Over the years (I can hardly believe it has been years, but it has) Dragon and I subconsciously developed a technique of editing each other as we go. For us, it works out very well. It also helps that we write exactly the same way.
That brings up another good point - it helps to work the same way. I say 'helps' because it is possible to work with someone who writes differently than you do. (I feel a 'for instance' coming on.)
For instance (see that?) there are writers who have to have everything mapped out in advance, and there are those, like me, who don't plan anything. To know me is to love or hate me - but in the process there is a lot of laughter.
So - thoughts and questions please.
I could ask for names and then put them in a hat to be drawn out, but I think better would be for pairs to vollenteer as a pair.
OK then - waiting to hear what you think.

Washing Prompt & The Bad Guys 2
Posted 3 months agoThe washing prompt: As Hubert Humphry used to say, 'I'm pleased as punch.'
This particular prompt really sparked a surge and enjoyment in the writing process, and I can honestly say, I was very impressed with all the postings. Though I am not a teacher, I believe this rather creative prompt certainly did give all of us some insight into examining the details of an 'every day' event in our lives and then putting those details into words. Kudos to everyone.
Now then, being we had a grandchildren's day yesterday, we went to see 'The Bad Guys 2'. I'm pleased to say, it was a lot of fun, and contained a good moral at the end - not to mention a happy ending.
On a personal note of observation - this sort of movie is wonderful because, it allows the ordinary, every day people of our society to step out of reality without the fear of being ridiculed for doing so. The particular grouping of characters used just seems to emphasize this without seeming to do so. The good/bad guys movie has, a wolf, a fox, a shark, a piranha, a snake, and a spider as main characters. Other sub-main characters included, a cat, a bird, a pig, and humans.
As you watch this chaotic grouping of creatures, you don't even seem to notice what they are, except really, really funny. The shark, as big as he is, has no problem walking, as do the other characters physically incapable of doing so in nature. I especially laughed when the bird told everyone the piranha looked like a mango with teeth - and sure enough, he did.
At the end of the movie, after the trailer, there was a small part that strongly hinted at a third movie to come our way. I do hope so, for my own enjoyment, but also for the enjoyment of the world at large which, for the most part, thinks we furs are a little more than strange - to which I would tell them, 'join the party'.
Now go - write - and above all else, love life.

What you write is inside of you
Posted 4 months agoHappy Thursday morning, everyone.
This journal is brought to you by a fleeting thought. When it happens we seldom take notice except to, perhaps, smile - but it does happen; and then they are gone.
This is where your writing comes from. Your mind is like a sponge, soaking up your life's experiences, and then (sometimes) recalling them on demand - or - when it simply wants to hit you with a wet wash cloth.
Example: One of my other loves in life (aside from my lifelong partner) is fencing. In my time (yes, I'm old) I fenced just about everywhere you could imagine. I was at a competition held in a shopping mall once, where the strips were laid down in a walk through area with a domed ceiling. This made it a natural echo chamber.
Well, there is a move in fencing called an 'appel'. Originally, it was a stamping of the front foot to the ground, to produce a sound meant to distract or startle your opponent. It may precede a lunge, or be used merely as a distraction. Everything in life, however, evolves. The stamped foot soon became a verbal distraction. I remember fencers shouting, 'Eh La!' which was an understandably polite distraction. From there, came the acceptance of the guttural 'SHOUT'.
I decided I should try this out, so on my attack, I bellowed like the ugly old troll hiding beneath the bridge. It was one of those things that comes from deep within the chest.
I believe my attack did land, but there was an unforeseen result; the entire shopping mall went totally silent. All eyes were suddenly on me, and then; a baby began to cry.
I suddenly felt the urge to apologize to everyone at large.
Well... that was my fleeting thought snatched by the tail like a cheap helium balloon, and it still makes me smile.
My point - I'm sure I had one, and not just because it was a fencing story - oh yes - everyone's life has moments just like this one. They are what makes you the person/writer you are.
Now get out there and put some words on paper.

Thursday Prompt 05-01-2025
Posted 6 months agoJust in case things do not get totally back to normal quickly, here is today's prompt. We shall make this one a poem so you can post it on this journal.
'The story is done, but you can’t up-load it for your readers.' - Life
You might consider making your own TP icon to announce your story as such. Readers watch for this and will respond.
If you do to participate in the Thursday Prompt, remember that it is good form to read your fellow participants. If you wish to give a critique, ask if the writer wishes one and then send it along in a private note.
Always remember; we are all writers together.
This week’s prompt is given to us by a random happening in our FA home: can't up-load
NOTE: Since this will be posted in the comments section of this journal, try your best to keep it reasonably short.

Megaplex Thursday Prompt Panel - not scheduled
Posted a year ago*sighs...
I'm not quite sure where things broke down, but I was alerted the Thursday Prompt panel discussion for Megaplex was not scheduled. I spoke to the staff, and they checked into it and tell me it was never applied for.
And so, I will give it the old fashioned shrug of the shoulders and say, "I thought I did."
I will be attending Megaplex, and I also know a lot of our writing friends will be there as well. If you happen to see the old guy wearing that long eared hat, it's probably me. If you want to sit and chat about writing, I would love to.
There will also be other writing panels, and I don't think I've ever attended a bad one.
Regards to all,

Sting - a talk on TED about writer's block
Posted a year agoOccasionally I come across something that I feel would benefit all of us, and this is one of them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy25A7vnigg
In this case, Sting happens to be one of my all time favorite musicians. His songs portray stories, and this is especially true of 'The Last Ship' which is a musical about where he grew up.
Give a listen... it is well worth it.

The Great Holiday Story Exchange
Posted 2 years agoGood Morning!
Yes it's a great day and the last day of November. Last night we hit 400 watchers. That's a lot of writers!
Now then; to the Great Holiday Story Exchange.
I'm totally winging this, so bear with me.
The idea is simple - everyone who wants to participate shall sign up below. On Monday, I will take all the names and pull them from a hat in pairs. I will then note everyone who they are writing for.
Stories should be posted on the following Monday with a link to the person the story was written for. Be sure to include this info in your story description.
I will make these suggestions:
Story length should be around five pages. One or two, more or less than that, to make things complete, would be fine.
As to story content - you're the writer, so you decide. Just remember, this is a smile sent to the person you're writing for so your words should reflect that.
If you have any questions, send me a note to my regular page. That way I will be sure to see it.

This is just a heads up. It has been suggested the prompters have their own gift/story exchange for the upcoming Christmas holiday.
I had to agree it was a good idea.
This Thursday, I will post a journal. Anyone who would like to do this should sign up. I will put everyone's name in a hat/bag/bowl/something, and draw them out in pairs. I will then notify everyone who they got. Two weeks after, for the Thursday Prompt, we will post and notify.
So everyone knows, since I will be drawing the names I will not be a part of the list. I see this as fair, and no one can then say I hand picked the draw... trust me in this.
See you Thursday...

His response to the story he posted 'Pulp' is something that needs to be read by all of us. If you haven't read his posting, you really should, because it totally embraces the essence of the old detective series (pulp) books, which my grandfather consistently read. In it, I totally found a writer who understands his craft.

Megaplex Schedule
Posted 2 years agoI am pleased to announce that the two things I will be involved with will be on the Megaplex schedule... both on Sunday September 17, 2023.
At 0700L - the Graymuzzle Breakfast will be held at the hotel's 24 hour market. It might not be as comfortable at the restaurants we've had in the past, but it's a gathering spot and I'm looking forward to my coffee with everyone.
At 1330L - The Thursday Prompt Writer's Meet and Greet. This will be totally different from other writing panels BECAUSE - it's about you the writer. I have already lined up some great talent to help with this too. You won't be disappointed.
NOTE: Keep an eye on the schedule because things could change up a bit.
I am very much looking forward to this.

Book Covers
Posted 2 years agoI know, for me, when I've completed something I've worked so very hard on, I want it to shine. This brings to mind an expression from my time - polishing the apple. This came from the custom of leaving an apple on the desk for the teacher; and yes you polished it to a good shine on your shirt sleeve. Sure, it was kissing up, and yes I did such a thing when a child.
Times have so changed.
Never mind that. We're talking about your book. Covers do sell books, and that has not changed. It's as pertinent now as it was for Edgar Rice Burrows.
In this vein, I had a back and forth with
TheScarletArtist about book covers. He is one of the artists whose artwork I consider far above average - and he understands covers. He also offers reasonable rates, so I thought I might pass this on to all of you.
OK... breaks over, back to editing.

Call for stories - anthology
Posted 2 years ago
Edwin_at_work contacted the Thursday Prompt looking for writers wishing to submit a story for his anthology on 'furries doing a job interview'. We went back and forth, covering the details, and my feelings are - it's a good and worthy project. He has read our prompters and likes what he sees.Yes, it is a paid submission should your story be one of those accepted.
Edwin is a furry job coach, and I can think of nothing better for the fandom than this form of help. Trust me, after 44 years in aviation, I can tell you all sorts of stories about job interviews, which range from the simple (they feel your wrist for a pulse, and hire you on the spot) to the complex (one, two interviews - a job test - interview with second highest, smile and a handshake from the president - rejection letter).
You may view the submission page through this link: https://edwinatworkanthology.carrd.co/#
There are a few place holders, but you will get the drift.
Good luck to those of you who submit. Always remember, you are a writer, and we are all writers together.

Telling Stories - a pertinent repost

The song is called 'Telling Stories' and it's by Tracy Chapman. The video is most excellent.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wapCTd5fS2Y
Being someone who has taken the time to interview my elders, I can tell you for sure, everyone has a story, and every story is so very fascinating.
I am reminded of Mr. Tony Anthony - yes, his name was Anthony Anthony. He was a resident in an old age home, and had been enjoying the interviews I had done with fencers of previous generations. He was bedridden and in his last days, but of course I didn't know this. In his life, he had been an institute all by himself in inks and inking, back before computers and printers took over the industry. His insight into the art of fencing during his generation was wonderful, and that is what I wrote of.
I was saddened when the priest in charge of the home called and told me he had passed away. He called me, because Tony had no relatives, and mine was the only number he had on record.
We all have a story to tell.
Now it's up to you, the writer, to bring those stories to light, and to make them shine like the diamonds they are.
