Prompting the prompters
Posted 3 years agoHello Everyone,
I had a question come up from one of our prompters, and thought it had valid concerns - so here it is and then my thoughts on the subject.
Hi V, I was wondering if there could be some system of making participants aware of all the entries for a specific prompt? I had a look at last weeks and noted there have been several more participants since I last checked. It would be a pity for people to miss out on potential readers only because they were late entries.
Though I do note several of the new people have the habit of not reading the other entrants stories.
To the first part, I will re-post - if you have written a prompt to an earlier dated TP, place your link in the original prompt (I don't delete them) and in the current prompt page too. Just be sure in the latest posting to mention which TP it belongs to.
To the second part, I will also re-post - Though it is not a rule to do so, it is prompt courtesy to read the other prompters who have posted. This is a courtesy meant to get all the prompters read and some constructive criticism offered - otherwise, how, as writers, will we ever understand our mistakes?
We have a great bunch of writers here, and I have always been pleased to be a part of this.
Some things I will add that will make a difference in the enjoyment people will get from your post. These items are NOT aimed at anyone in particular.
Always post a completed composition. By this, I mean - EDIT. (Reading an un-edited piece is like trying to chew rocks.) Sometimes I will take a look at things being posted in the 'general' posting of FA and see words to the effect; 'I was bored and threw this together.' Now why on earth would I ever even bother to open that file? When I was a child, it was a thing to place an apple on your teacher's desk. You always polished it first, and then placed it worm hole down.
Try to keep your post at 4 to 5 pages. More is not a problem, and it does happen to all of us, but 4 to 5 is more likely to be read. If I am keenly enjoying a story, I personally have no problem reading twenty pages (and more) - but this is not about me. Even at that, life, for all of us, comes first. Some days, I get up in the morning, and suddenly find it's time again to go back to bed.
My personal tip for NEW writers: make the editing process part of your writing style. I will go back after writing a page, and re-read just looking for things like duplicate words. The more you do this, the easier it becomes, because you are training your mind to do the things it needs to do so your words are readable.
Be well... Write more...

The Holidays

To relieve a little stress for everyone, there will be no prompt next week for the Christmas holiday.
Eat, drink (responsibly) and be merry.
May you all find the peace this world needs so badly.

There is help for writers if you know where to look.
Posted 3 years agoI know from experience that sometimes a writer needs someone they can speak with if only to point them in the right direction. There is a furry couple who does offer such services:
riffraffcat and
lei-lani
Riff and I were speaking in one such conversation, and they would like to offer their services to other writers. They have quite a lot to offer.
Paul Kraly:
We can edit and ghostwrite and have about 30 years experience doing this.
We WERE literary agents back in the day and we COULD be again. We can handle all the social media aspects, phone calls, letters, correspondence, etc.
We can put together marketing plans for authors, actually Zoom meeting with them one-on-one to go over their book(s) and help them devise a full-fledged marketing plan for better coverage of books, better popularity and better sales.
We'll publish books too if we love what we see from someone. (we're really picky though; we really want the best from folks.)
We can do some graphic work, make posters, banner ads, cool stuff authors will need to get their books seen more.
We can help make book websites through Wordpress if needed. (I have samples available I can show)
Apart from THAT...we can also:
Create and develop books and promotional videos, including scripts for Public Service Announcements, training films, and other pertinent company information.
Design and create Powerpoint presentations, arrange meetings, remediation and other events.
Write grant proposals, Private Placement Documents, including writing and editing grants, and researching sources of available funds. We’ve done this for real estate ventures, sole-proprietorships, and educational institutions. We’ve also set up 501-c3 (tax exempt) entities for several people to allow them other means for donations.
**To get in touch, follow the links from their icons, and send them a note. Their fees are quite reasonable.
In closing, Paul offered everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, and that goes for me too. May you all have a wonderful day with family.

Total Surprise
Posted 3 years agoNormally I do not point out one or another prompt stories because we are all here to do the same thing: write.
It's true, we all have our favorites to watch in the writing world, but in the respect that 'writers need writers', in here we are all writers together.
First, we were given an image by one of our own for the prompt.

Then, today, we were joined by a musician,
Zackwell_D_Aesther and what he gave based upon the animated image is truly remarkable.

I am so pleased with this, I just had to share it.

Writing Assistance and Services
Posted 3 years agoWell now... being that I have finally gotten myself motivated to get published, I have realized how much fun it is in running into a brick wall over and over and over.
That being said, it is so refreshing when you meet someone (who is an actual furry), and in the business of writing.
In this case, I would like to pass on some information to all of you prompters who might have the need of editing services, and various other such things.
Lei-Lani and
RiffRaffCat are both between contracts and are open for editing services . They have nearly thirty years of technical writing experience, and are quite approachable.
So if you are looking for an editor, perhaps discussing and considering their services might be an option.

Thursday Prompt Participant Info
Posted 3 years agofrom
onic
Hey there!
I have a recommendation for participants of the Thursday Prompt when they upload their story submissions. FA allows several different document formats, but that can be ignored entirely if the story is copy-pasted into the submission description. Most of us veteran participants already do this, but the newer writers do not, and I often cannot open their submissions while on my phone. (.rtf is the worst culprit, I can't do anything with it).
Since we are putting an emphasis on response comments, I really hate to miss out on reading a submission just because I can't access the document.
If you could share this info to the prompt page, that would be a huge help!
Thanks,
Onic
PS: (Vix) This is the second mention of this by a participant, so I thought I would pass it along. Perhaps it's my older phone, but mine does download a PDF, and I can open it.

READ
Posted 3 years agoThis journal is meant to address the growing problem of those writers participating in the Thursday Prompt and then NOT reading the stories of the other participants.
True - reading is not a requirement. We have always left life to rule the day, figuring courtesy would rule participation; but it would seem this only applies to a few of our writers.
Granted, there are some things I will not read just from personal choice, and I expect this will be the case for all of us.
BUT (there is always a 'but')
If you want to be read, you must read. This is what the TP is all about. This is also why that expectation is posted with EVERY prompt.
The practice of writing is a must if you are going to better yourself as a writer. Being read is the goal of most, if not all, writers.
If you are going to participate in the Thursday Prompt (and I hope you do), then please participate with the courtesy paid to your fellow participants.
Regards,

Spring Cleaning - New Beginnings
Posted 3 years agoMade you look!
*smiles...
So... the TP has many watchers. Normally we have had an average of about three to six writers posting something based upon the prompt. Tomorrow will be a little different.
I want to lure out the shy and the bashful. I want to pull in those of us who have no time, are suffering writer's block - or - frustration that the words won't come.
Fish school together, other animals flock, and still others run in packs.
Writers need other writers.
Why is simple - other writers are the only other people who will understand you.
If like me, you've sent stories to your family. You will thus have heard, 'Oh, that's nice'; if even that. My sister even told me, 'I just don't like animal people', and yet, she loves dragons. I even lost my original writing mentor over my choice of writing subjects, but that is neither here nor there at this point in my life.
Tomorrow I will post a prompt asking for you to introduce yourself. This will be an introduction of no more than five sentences. At least that's the guideline. You do not have to go into details.
Look through the postings and smile - you will do this when you realize you are not alone.
Now then, just as a personal note, it's best not to press others to read your works. In my case, as an example, I am usually busy writing. I also read - real real real slow. That's the way my brain works - go figure. Time and life are always limiting factors.
This part is what the Thursday Prompt is all about - getting read.
Prompts should be kept to five pages for readability. This is just a suggestion because sometimes stories go long of their own nature. The idea of posting is that the readers should read each other. - think about that; that much is simply being polite. You also begin to understand you have to please your reader. Posting junk (and that's the nicest word I could think of) will get you nowhere.
The Beatles spelled it out - And in the end, the love you take will equal the love you make.
Cheers then, and see you tomorrow.

Something I am so pleased to find within the TP

It is poetry put to music, and it is so wonderfully composed and executed. It is a piece that, quite honestly, left me speechless.

Merry Christmas and/or Happy Hollidays
Posted 4 years agoCharles Dickens was a larger than life writer publishing many classics, yet one of his most famous, 'A Christmas Carol', revolves itself around Christmas.
I would suggest, to you, the movie called, 'The Man Who Invented Christmas'.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6225520/
You will find the movie not to be about the holiday, but about the writer.
For those of you who cherish this holiday, as I do, I wish you a very Merry Christmas.
For those of you who, for one reason or another, do not celebrate, I wish you love, happiness, and the warmth of good friendship. I mean this from the bottom of my heart.
For the world, my wish is, if only for one day, true peace, free from hatred and the other dregs of everyday life.

Megaplex Thursday Prompt Panel 08-08-2021
Posted 4 years agoReport by Vixyy Fox, Thursday Prompt host.
This year's Megaplex was wonderful. The Thursday Prompt again had a panel this year, and it was wonderful. We had, perhaps, twenty participants.
This year, we did things a bit differently. Five of our authors who were to attend Megaplex, wrote an anthology for the con.

This anthology was then sold by the con with all monies going to the C.A.R.E. charity.
During our panel, all of the authors presented themselves to the audience with each telling how they write. (Sorry Walt, but your room of infinite monkeys just keeps floating back into my mind.)
After this presentation, everyone was invited to 'rub elbows' as 'We are all writers together.' They were told, 'If you have a question, ask any of us, and we'll do our best to give you an answer.
It was wonderful - and then came the awesome sauce. A little girl, there with her parents, raised her hand and asked me to read something. Coming forward, she passed up a phone, and on the phone's screen was a story. We had no idea what was about to occur.
I was completely taken by surprise, as this has never actually been requested before. Apologizing for my bad voice, I began to read. I made it through about a paragraph when the phone dimmed and went out.
The story was good!
I read more until the phone's light again went out. That's when she told us she was only eleven years old. The room went completely silent, and then everyone broke out in applause.
This is the sort of writer that makes my heart sing. In fact, I was very pleased to see every writer in that room respond in such an uplifting manner.
This is exactly what the Thursday Prompt is all about. 'We are all writers together.'
Writers need other writers. Even though the TP is meant for practice, we read each other and then offer up suggestions and friendship.
It is a wonderful thing we do here, and I, for one, am glad to be a part of it.

Blah... I hate words like that - official, straight to the point, go away and don't bother me...
I know this is an American holiday, but in it there is a lot of love. For this reason, it is my favorite holiday of the year; a day set aside just to share a meal, friendship, desert, and maybe a nap.
You don't have to decorate.
You don't have to buy gifts you can't afford.
All you have to do is bring your appetite.
In this, there is a wonderful drawback to mankind's true heritage; one of peace, of love, of, of, of...
Oh heck, pass the potatoes would ya?
Peace be with you all, and please please please don't let the Covid thing get you down...

SURPRISE! There was a mystery word in that song. What the heck is the 'pompatus of love'? Darned if I knew, nor had I ever even considered it since it is hardly one of my favorite songs. I always thought it was a bit... ahem... stupid. It did, however, achieve a number one status (I think) and it made a heck of a lot of money for Mr. Miller.
Thanks to Marm, doing some digging, there is a link to this article explaining everything. https://www.straightdope.com/213421.....mpatus-of-love
As I learned during my study of fencing, (language aside as that does not matter) a word is a vocalized sound meaning a specific thing.
Where do words come from? Initially they are made up.
Go read that article, it's a wonderful read, and might just raise an eyebrow.

New link suggestion - please read
Posted 5 years agoGood Morning to one and all...
I have noticed something and wish to make an adjustment suggestion for all the prompters. Currently, when you do a prompt, we ask that you place a link in the posted prompt for everyone to see. I noticed that late prompts (a week or so behind) do not seem to be getting the reads they should.
example: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/38250808/
This prompt by
dankedonuts is short and sweet and totally inventive; but it was a late post.
SUGGESTION: If you have a late post, please include the link in the current posting of the TP with the explanation it is a late prompt.
And remember - it is good form to read the other prompters... this is one of the reasons for the TP...
Have a good day everyone...

A story everyone should read and then ask for more
Posted 5 years agoAll of you who follow the Thursday Prompt know that I do not do whimsical journals. Nor do I use this platform to promote anything other than writing. If I post a journal here, I usually have a reason, and a method to my madness.
I am a writer (as are we all here). Oddly enough, when I read, I read very very slowly (in depth and for enjoyment). This is the way I have always been. It's all I can do to keep up with the Thursday Prompters, which I read religiously, as that is the purpose of the TP.
Occasionally I will visit a story because it peaks my interest, or for some other reason, but not as often as I would like. Recently, one of those stories reached out and slapped me upside the head. It is a werewolf story of a different nature, and I was hooked within the first few pages. As I tore through the pages at a rabid pace of a few pages a day, I found I couldn't take my mind off of the story as it is also a murder mystery.
And then it ended - without ending. As it was explained to me, this was a writer's introductory story to a publisher. My wail of disappointment was loud and long.
WAIT! WHAT?!
Trust me when I say I protested.
ladysajani is a professional writer. She is very good.
The story is here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/37970410/
Tongue in cheek (or maybe not) she has issued a challenge. If enough people fav this story, she will finish it.
Since we writers know that FA is a tough crowd, I wanted to put this out there and (almost) literally drag readers over there by the elbow and stick there nose in it like a bad dog... no... wait... very bad simile there. (You'll see why I say this.)
Follow the link and read. You won't be disappointed. Cast your vote and help me get that ending.

A story all prompters should read...
Posted 5 years agoI'm placing this here because it's a late comer, and I know such things can get misplaced if not placed on a sign board and flashed ***THIS JUST IN!
bering has a late submission that will be broken into five parts for ease of reading. Having just read the first part, I am quite anxious for more - and thus the reason for the sign board here.
story: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/37.....#cid:148363296
also... (Oh Lord she has an also) I have noticed the story postings have fallen off a good bit, but considering the state of the nation/world, and the craziness there of, I find this understandable. I am proud of all you Thursday Prompters regardless of postings. I will play the old grandmother, however, and waggle a Foxy finger at you, and then say softly, 'You are a writer. Now write something.'
*hugs to all...
