yeah, I have a hard time keeping FA updated ^^;
Posted 7 years agoI have a really hard time keeping FA updated... but I try to remember to come here and post a thing every once in a while! I have a folder on my computer called "POST" of all the art I've made but haven't put online yet, and it just keeps getting bigger ^^;;
I tend to be way more active on Twitter these days, so you can find me there if you like: @ TicaSloth
If you need to reach me for something, my telegram is the same: @ TicaSloth
But I fully intend to pop in here every once in a while to update my gallery ^-^

AHH WILD NIGHTS WAS SO MUCH FUN
Posted 7 years agoI drove down to Wild Nights in Oklahoma again this year with
springdragon and I had a blast! It was even more fun than last year. I sold like four times more art, made four times more friends, and generally had an amazing time.
Special thanks to
cris089 for being a huge sweetheart--and to all the people who stopped by my table to say hi or who talked to me around the campfire or who commissioned me or who gave me hugs and cuddles!! There are too many people to name them all! I love every last one of you ;-;
Also, we have elected
atrueblueartist as the Glitter Queen (or Glitter Senpai--not sure which yet). Along with Blue,
springdragon and I (and later
MLW) formed the Glitter Corner™ at Wild Nights, and it was fabulous. If you want to join our Glitter Squad, there are three simple steps:
- Make art
- Put glitter on it
- Repeat (ad infinitum)
...I say this after every con, but I'm going to try harder to keep up with my FA account, keeping my gallery updated and checking comments and messages more often. The next con I'm scheduled to attend is Anthro Weekend Utah 2018, in Salt Lake City, August 10-12.
--
Here is my updated commission queue, now including take-homes from Wild Nights:
1.Digital image for Flame Sage - done!
2.Digital ref for Kudo Shepherd (front/back anthro) - done!
3.Watercolor detailed sloth painting for Merlot - done!
4.Digital full body with background for Goforit - done!
5.Watercolor detailed full body badge for Castor (with glow-in-the-dark paint!) - done!
6. Detailed full body painting with fully rendered scenery for Kanashio
7. Detailed full body digital painting for Silver
8. Digital colored sketch for Scarbo
9. Simple digital fullbody for Cyber Dragon
10. Ref sheet for Ian the Gecko

AHHH AWU WAS SO MUCH FUN
Posted 8 years agoI had SUCH a blast at Anthro Weekend Utah 2017! OMG! Over the next week, I will be posting art that I made for lovely folks at the con to here (and Weasyl) and I will be putting up all the awesome fursuit photos I got to my suit's facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/ticathesloth/ ). Keep an eye out for them~
Shoutouts and thank yous go to:
springdragon for being an excellent boyfriend, table-mate, and art-sensei
kreoche for his fantastic sloth-handling skills, photography, and all-round awesomeness
wrathofautumn for letting us stay at his house (to save money on hotel costs) and getting me into the furry fandom in the first place (over 13 years ago! o.o)
ianthegecko for stopping by my table every once in a while to keep me company and for showing off my art to people :D
There were so many people who helped make this con a great experience that I can't list them all!!
I do also want to give a special shout-out to the Anthro Weekend Utah con staff for putting together a fantastic con, and for seriously listening to our suggestions for improving next year's con~

Q for watchers and posting WIPs in scraps
Posted 8 years agoHiya folks,
I want to try to post art more often, but my process is pretty slow. I'm thinking it might be fun to post cool WIPs to my scraps from time to time. Is that something you'd be interested in seeing? Let me know!
Also, if you're watching me and reading this, do you mind telling me why yo watched me in the first place and what kind of posts you like seeing from me?
Thanks,
Tica

Back from Wild Nights!!
Posted 8 years agoOh, wow! What a whirlwind of a trip. I'm incredibly tired, but I had a really good time and I'm glad that I made the last-minute decision to go.
First of all, I want to thank
springdragon for being awesome in general and a wonderful traveling companion and art sensei.
Second of all, I want to thank everyone who commissioned me or came to my table to keep me company while I was doing art! For my first time selling art at a con, I did really well, and that's all thanks to the lovely people who took the time to flip through my portfolio and throw money at me to make something for them. I'm always so honored when people commission me ;-;
I should be posting photos of the example badges I brought with me and the commissions from Wild Nights over the next few days. I'm incredibly thrilled to report that my first commission was a sloth badge (!!) and that I also had the pleasure of making a pangolin badge for
zahldar during the con... Drawing rare and unusual species is always such a pleasure. Sloths and pangolins for the win!!
There was one person who didn't pick up her badge... the character's name is Kyndrix. I have emailed her already (now that I have internet access!!) but if anybody knows how to get in touch with her, please tell her to contact me!
I have one take-home commission to do (which I am very excited about :D). I am still open for both digital and traditional commissions, so hit me up or email me (tica.the.sloth at gmail) if you're interested. :D
More glitter is needed!!!

Going to Wild Nights!!
Posted 8 years agoThis is totally a last minute thing, but! I should be accompanying my good friend
springdragon to Wild Nights in Oklahoma this weekend!
I will not be bringing my fursuit as it is mostly a camping con, but I WILL be selling custom badge commissions (and misc take-home commissions) in the artist's alley!
I'm very excited and look forward to meeting a bunch of new people! Wish me luck as I scramble to get ready on time @-@
...I have no business cards yet ;-;
But I do have a bunch of recent watercolor badge examples! I'll try to post some tonight if I have time. Otherwise it will have to wait until I get back as I probably won't have internet or cell phone reception for the duration of the con D:

RMFC 2016 art show
Posted 8 years agoI realized a while ago that I never uploaded the art that I'd put in the RMFC 2016 art show... I'm gonna do that now, starting with the ones that sold and ending with the ones that are still for sale. So keep an eye out!
I had painted five pieces and sold three of them, so I consider it a success. :D
Now, I probably should have charged a tad more for what I sold, but I'm still getting the hang of this whole art selling thing! It's hard to figure out what to charge, knowing that you have to take into account lots of different factors--not only how much time you spent on it and cost of materials (canvas, art supplies, etc.), but also the quality of the finished product (experts can charge more than newbs), what people are actually willing/able to pay (furries skew young and tend to be kinda broke, lol), and what other artists are charging (it's unfortunately common in this fandom for artists to charge way too little... which drives down the amount people are willing/able to pay).
Next year my plan is to actually have a table in the dealer's den, so I probably won't be putting anything into the art show... but we'll see!

National Novel Writing Month!
Posted 9 years agoSo, every year I *want* to participate in NaNoWriMo but I don't because... well, originally because November was a very busy month for school and involved a lot of exams. Later, after graduation, it was because of my health issues.
This year I've decided to participate for real. Only, instead of writing a novel, I'm going to write a script for a graphic novel project I've been tossing around in my head for a while. The working title right now is Magic Words. It's an anthro comic (more on the feral side--planned anatomy less Blacksad and more Zootopia). It's going to be a fantasy epic. I want it to contain episodes kind of like Mushi-shi, if you've ever seen that anime. Right now I'm looking at something like ten to fifteen separate, somewhat self-contained, interconnected episodes/comic issues. No idea what the page count of each episode is going to be yet.
I was doing freewriting and worldbuilding on Nov 1st, and I skipped Nov 2nd due to an unexpectedly long day at work. Today I'm hammering out the rest of the outline and I'm going to try and import the scenes I've already written to Celtx. Since comic scripts don't have a standard format, I've decided to write it in a visual screenplay format, and then break it up into pages, panels, and word bubbles when I'm going through the final draft.
NaNoWriMo is just about getting the first draft down on paper, so that's what I'm working on now! :D

Personal Update: not dead yet
Posted 9 years agoHello folks. For those of you who have been kinda following my health struggles, I thought you might be interested to know that I was recently diagnosed with a sleep disorder called Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH).
Basically it means that no matter how much sleep I get, I will always be sleepy, and suffer waves of uncontrollable sleepiness that make me want to either a) lie down and sleep immediately, or, if that's not possible, b) scream/cut myself/cry/have an existential crisis... Apparently my body secretes this substance into my blood that acts like a tranquilizer. Like I'm constantly popping Xanax throughout the day. (No wonder actually taking benzos messed me up so bad a while back.)
No one knows what causes IH. I was diagnosed through a sleep study. For me, the IH seems to have been getting worse over the past year or so... I used to do okay with 8 hours of sleep, then 9, then 10... eventually I got to where I was sleeping 12 hours a night and still taking naps during the day because I couldn't keep my eyes open. And before you say it, no, the solution isn't to just sleep less. (A lot of people tell me "well no wonder you feel like shit, you slept too much, I always feel like crap if I sleep more than 10 hours" and it's like... no, that's not how it works, my brain doesn't actually know how to wake up, it's a neurological condition and you have no idea what it feels like unless you have it...) Caffeine also doesn't make much of a difference because a dose high enough to help would basically stop my heart, lol.
What typically works for people is stimulants. So I'm on ADHD meds right now, basically. They haven't restored me to a normal level of functioning, but they've definitely helped me pull through a bad patch and be more productive. So, hopefully the stimulants will keep working, and I will keep up with the art, because I really do enjoy art and I'd love to grow my following and start doing more commissions for people, and maybe get some prints together, buy a button maker, and hit the convention circuit next year. I'd also love to keep working on some graphic novel scripts I've got going right now...
That's about it for my update. Hopefully my health will improve, or at least stabilize so that I can learn how to cope better.
Peace, y'all.

Are you a Fursuiter?
YES!! Look for the two-toed sloth with a flower in her hair :3
Attending parties?
Probably a private room party with friends.
Do you drink?
Two drinks max per day.
Do you smoke?
Nope.
Are you attending any panels?
Maybe? I usually end up skipping most of these. I will attend the fursuit games though, and possibly fursuit charades.
How do I identify my self to you?
Say hi and introduce yourself! Try yelling either "Tica" or "it's a SLOTH" to get me to look in your direction XD
Rules of engagement (physical contact)?
Handshakes are fine. Hugs are awesome if you ask first. If I'm in suit please be careful as I will be moving in slow motion. I also have giant claws that can be dangerous if you aren't careful!
How can I find you?
Look for a sloth fursuiter or a short white girl with a buzzcut wearing a sloth badge. See here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14177909/
Can I talk to you?
Of course.
Can I give you lots of money?
I definitely take commissions ~
Can I hug or snuggle with you?

How do I know if you're not looking to socialize (angry, busy or upset)?
I'll tell you.
Personality Type?
Hufflepuff :P
What's your goal for the con this year?
To have fun, do more suiting than last year, get some nice photos, get a commission or a few nice prints, sell my stuff I'm putting in the art show, and see all my friends!
ALSO, as a side note, this account has been kinda inactive lately but I've done quite a bit of art recently. I will post it after the con, so that RMFC attendees get to see it first.

What hotel are you staying at?
The main convention hotel, iirc.
Arrival/Departure:
Arriving sometime on Friday. Not sure when yet.

Posted 9 years agoIf you don't already know, I have been dating
chioxin for the past like month or so. He's a cool dude. No you can't have him.
There seems to be some confusion about my sexuality so, to clear it up, I'm bisexual/pansexual. I tend to prefer females but sometimes I make exceptions for giant blue dragons. I am monogamous as well.
Tica the sloth is a pan-romantic, asexual character, and represents the more childlike and innocent aspects of me. Keep your eyes out for an alt 'sona ref from me in the near future, XD

Furry Raiders and Colorado drama
Posted 9 years agoSo. I guess I just wanted to post a journal about the Furry Raiders bullshit that's been going down recently in Colorado, considering I am a local fur here and the entire situation is really annoying me.
Short version of the story: there is a neo-nazi wannabe named Foxler living locally here. Twenty minutes of googling can show you that he is not a very savory character. His FA is here:
starfoxacefox . You can see on his fursona ref a red armband that is purposefully reminiscent of the kind the Nazis used to wear, with the swastika replaced by a pawprint. There's also a photo of him in suit doing the Nazi salute circulating on twitter (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CdEzJBj.....-gcO.jpg:large). I've also seen screenshots where Foxler admits to practicing zoophilia with his dogs (http://41.media.tumblr.com/8daf7fa1.....od2ro2_400.png) and he apparently has an unsavory criminal history, altho' I won't go into detail unless I gather more firm evidence for it.
This dude, Foxler (Fox-[Hit]ler, get it?) founded a local group in CO called the Furry Raiders. If you look at their account (here:
furryraiders) You will see that it is listed as being 126 years old. I'll give you one guess as to what historical figure would be 126 years old if still alive today... (hint: it's Hitler...)
The Furry Raiders have hosted some completely innocent-looking events, like a private Zootopia screening. But their use of Nazi-esque imagery is getting them into hot water here in CO. Their armbands were banned from the Foxtrot meet (a 21+ furry nightclub thing). Foxler then created a belt with the exact same design, and when he was told not to wear that either, he tried to come back in with his armband again.
I'm not trying to spread rumors here--all of the stuff I'm saying has been documented somehow. If you check out twitter and google this Foxler guy... it's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. It just gets worse and worse.
The Furry Raiders claim that Foxler acts on his own, he's a core admin of their group but he doesn't speak for the group as a whole, etc. etc. However, the Furry Raiders have been asked on numerous occasions by many different people to do two simple things, and refuse to do either one:
1. Change the color of the armbands to literally any other color besides red.
2. Eject Foxler from their group for being a disruptive jerk at CO furry events and for his neo-nazi wannabe antics.
Yet. They continue to keep Foxler around and cover for him, and they refuse to change their armbands to look less Nazi-esque. Ergo, in my opinion, the entire group is tainted by their neo-nazi associations. And all they're doing is making us look bad.
I already wrote a sincere and professional letter to the staff of RMFC, asking them to please re-write their code of conduct to prevent attendees from wearing hateful symbols, or symbols reminiscent of such things. This would include things like Nazi imagery, confederate imagery, KKK imagery, Westboro imagery, and knockoffs that are very similar to such. Basically the iconography of any active or historical hate group would be treated with suspicion and disallowed in the public convention space. I suggested a warning for the first few infractions and then ejection from the con for repeated ones.
I think it would be good thing for anyone else worried about this kind of thing to write a similar letter to their local convention. And if you host a meet or any kind of furry gathering, you should make it explicit that anything that can reasonably be interpreted as hateful imagery should not be allowed. Unfortunately several meets in CO have had to go invite-only in order to prevent further mischief and disruption from this group. It's very obvious to me that they thrive on the drama that they cause. Honestly I don't recommend interacting with the group directly because they just eat up the attention. I think it's better for us to educate ourselves, and then create policies that prevent drama and attention whores from ruining things for everyone.
That's my kinda disjointed $0.02 on the matter. Feel free to comment and continue the conversation on this page if you have something to say.

photo gallery update and.... cry for help
Posted 9 years agoFirst a little silly spot of good news:
I made a facebook page for Tica the Sloth so that I could more easily upload galleries full of con photos. FA, Weasyl, and other art-oriented sites make it very difficult to post large numbers of photos at once. I experimented with other web gallery options, but decided the best way to go was a public facebook fanpage. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/ticathesloth/ . If you ever upload any pictures of me in suit onto facebook, please be sure to tag TicatheSloth in them! (And if you're friends with my personal, private facebook, please keep in mind that I'd like to maintain a strict separation between the character Tica and my human self. Thank you!)
Then, here's the bad news:
I had to quit my temp job (that I loved) about two weeks ago, due to health issues and such bad fatigue it was impossible to physically get there each morning. I've been relentlessly pursuing my issues with doctors, but I've had no luck yet in determining what is wrong with me. My best guess is either chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia, both of which are in my family history. We're currently ruling out endocrine causes before I get referred to a rheumatologist. I recently applied for food stamps, and I am getting a little food help from my parents as well, here and there. I have enough savings to last me through the end of my lease, which is up on May 31st, so that's good--but that's *all* I've got--only enough to pay rent and buy food and pay medical co-pays through then.
I would like to remind everybody that I am open for commissions! Every little bit counts, and any bit of change you can spare in my direction will go toward trying to keep me financially secure until I either get well enough to work again or manage to wrestle some kind of financial aid out of the government.

fursuit videos?
Posted 9 years agoDo you like them? Do you watch them? Do you want to see me do any?
I figure most of my watchers ended up watching me because of my fursuit. If that's you and you want something--more fursuit photos, videos, in-character AMAs, something like that--now's your chance to tell me.

Please answer a few questions about my art!
Posted 9 years agoI'm toying with the idea of trying to get a table in the dealer's den for RMFC 2016. If I don't do the dealer's den, I will at least try to put a few paintings in the art show again.
I don't get a lot of commissions these days, and I'm not sure whether it's mostly due to my art quality (which I hope to continue improving over time), lack of visibility as an artist in the fandom (most of my watchers only know me by my fursuit), or a combination of both things.
If you're reading this journal I hope you wouldn't mind answering a few questions!
- What kind of art or commission would you be most likely to buy, if you were going to buy from me personally? Would you prefer a badge or an icon? Single character or scene? Traditional or digital?
- What kind of prints do you look for in the dealer's den? Cute scenes? Single figures in a vast landscape? Feral animals? Comics? What species do you end up buying prints of? Is there a specific species you wish you could find more prints of?
- What do you think my strengths are as an artist? Weaknesses?
- Would you consider buying a crayon or colored pencil circle badge from me at a con for $10? (examples of crayon: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/17032150/ ; examples of colored pencil: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/17083293/ )
- What kind of commissions do you tend to buy/wish you could buy at cons?
Lastly, if you have any advice for me in trying to improve my art or work as a dealer at a furry convention, please feel free to comment! I am a hobby artist, and I'm not trying to make a living via art. I do it to have fun. My only goal in being a dealer would be to break even on con and hotel expenses.

all righty then. Halloween is over (also, F5 for new icon)
Posted 10 years agoMy new icon was a limited-time-only Halloween commission I got from Sigil ( https://www.weasyl.com/~sigil ) whose art I really love for some reason ~

Half skull badges are now closed. I've got three in my queue right now--one trade, and two for friends who have been to haunted houses with me in the past. So you can keep an eye out for those.
I'm also still working on a quick, simple horror comic at the moment. I'm only a few pages in... idk how long it will end up being. I'm drawing it traditionally on small paper mostly to practice inking techniques. The quality won't be super great but I'm still excited about it. So keep an eye out for that, too!
As some of you guys might already know, I have a chronic autoimmune condition that flares sometimes. I'm in the middle of a flare right now, so my whole life has kind of slowed down. I had to quit my job because I couldn't work 32 hours a week anymore... I'm gonna go back to temping, but reduce my hours to more like 20 to 25 hours a week and see if that can help get me through the winter.
I really appreciate the support of all those who watch my page and comment on my submissions. I've got a lot of unfinished stuff kinda floating around right now but hopefully I'll be able to start posting finished stuff soon.
Take care of yourselves. I'm gonna keep drinking houji-cha with rum in it and see if I can't shake this nasty head cold I got from a coworker....

countdown to Halloween...
Posted 10 years agoI'm already starting to see pumpkins and ghosts everywhere and it's making me so happy. I love Halloween! Or rather, the month of October. I don't necessary do much on the day of Halloween itself, but I try to go to a haunted house every weekend in October, watching scary movies (but not bloody ones, I hate the bloody ones), and enjoying darkness and cooler weather. yeahhhhh!
and I hate candy, too :P

Well! post-RMFC, art show, random stuff
Posted 10 years agoJust tryina clear that RMFC meme off my front page.
RMFC 2015 was a blast! I was super busy the entire time, always someone to talk to, something to do. I love ALL MY FRIENDS and I have wayyyy too many to shoutout to everyone so I'm just gonna say, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, I LOVE YOU AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME.
This was my first year putting stuff into the art show. I only sold one piece out of five, but I think that's pretty good for a first go. I still haven't received my check from the art show yet though... I wonder how long that part takes?? They'd better not stiff me -_-;;
The pieces that didn't sell have had their prices reduced and they are available for sale online for however long until they get sold. I've got:
"Pangolin" -- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/17480229/
"Honey Badger Cares" -- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/17522717/
and
"Three-toed sloth climbing palm" -- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/17248051/ ...this last one didn't successfully auction the first time, so I am going to try a few other avenues for sale first before reducing the price and trying another auction.
Next year if I'm around for RMFC I'm going to try and have a dealer's table instead, selling prints, bookmarks, random canvases from acrylics/watercolor practice, and of course custom commissions! I'm going to start working on a business card over the next few weeks so that I can get my name out there as an artist. I feel like a lot of people know me for my sloth fursuit, which I did not make myself (although I have made modifications to it). I definitely feel like I am continuing to grow and improve as an artist and that I have a lot to offer the furry fandom and beyond. I am self-taught, and a hobbyist, so I don't need to make a living off doing this, but it would be nice if I could at least start breaking even on art supplies costs through art sales :P
IF you have any ideas for cutesy prints that I could make that might sell, let me know!! yeah! Give me ideas! Remember that I strongly prefer rare, unusual species, and that I mostly draw ferals. Comment away ~~ What do you look for when buying a print?

Fursuit(s): Tica the sloth (as pictured here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14177909/ - note that human me has a bit more hair than that these days)
Attending Parties: Private room parties with friends only
How best to find me: Either look for my sloth suit or for someone wearing a sloth T-shirt or a short white girl with short blondish hair and glasses
Drink?: I like hard cider, as well as mixed drinks with rum or gin. I have celiac disease so all beer and malt beverages are a big NO for me.
Smoke?: I do not smoke. I don't particularly like being around it, either.
Hugs?: I will hug pretty much anyone but please ASK first! Especially if I am in suit, please allow me to hug you in slow motion, don't move too quickly!!
Talk?: Hit me up for a conversation if you like!
Art?: I am for sure an artist and I definitely take commissions. I will have some manner of art supplies at the con. I will do free sketches for you in your sketchbook if you ask nicely and I have free time. Color is extra unless I know you personally ~
What is your gender? Female, feminist, androgynous/butch presentation
How old are you? Just turned 26 last week o.o
Can I touch you? Hugs/handshakes only please! (unless we are friends and have established a higher level of intimacy)
Can I buy you lots of drinks? I will only accept one at a time! I don't like getting drunk; I have a very sensitive brainpan.
Can I give you lots of money? Uh... why???
Can I hug or snuggle with you? Hugs if you ask first! Snuggles if I know you very well and we've snuggled before!
How tall are you? 5'3"
You look pissed off out of suit can I come up to you? It is not a good idea to approach someone who is pissed off. Maybe wait for a bit until I've perked up and come back.
Are you nice? Usually!
Are you cliquey? If by that you mean, "do you mostly stick with one group of friends," then kind of! I prefer to hang out with people I know pretty well. But I am also open to meeting new people too!
Can I stalk you? Only if you are in a feline fursuit.
Do you like parties? Depends on if my friends are there or not.
If I see you, how should I get your attention? Yell either "Tica!" or "sloth!" Both of those do it pretty well. You should also wave so I know who is shouting ^^
Are you fursuiting? Yes!!
Can I ask ya to dance with me during the dances? As long as you don't mind that I exclusively dance in slow motion!
Can I buy breakfast, lunch, or dinner sometime? You can try, but I have a lot of food allergies so this is hard to do.
Can I take a picture of ya? Always!! If I am in suit you don't have to ask, but if you do ask then I can pose for you ~~

update on my situation
Posted 10 years agoI've been quiet lately. let me tell you why.
One, I've been sick. They've noticed abnormal readings on my thyroid, but need to do more tests before they can figure out how to treat it (including an ultrasound of my neck). So I go between exhaustion and a painful restlessness in the meantime.
Two, work is really stressing me out. Not only is it really busy lately, but I'm having some interpersonal problems, made worse by a combination of my autism and someone else's passive-aggression.
Three, I'm about to have major surgery on Wednesday, to remove a pretty significant amount of (benign!) tissue that has been causing me pain and bad posture. I will be off work for at least a week, possibly longer, and living with my mama during recovery. I'm excited about the final results, but getting there is gonna be a huge pain...! Literally.
So until I recover from my surgery I won't be around much. I love you guys though and I look forward to the day I feel well enough again to pick up painting again.
peace,
Tica
