Big Tired- But doing well
Posted 2 years agoIts been a very very busy and frustrating semester. I am typically doing school most days from early morning to late evenings and don't really get weekends. Today was a really big day though. We had a Biotech career fair that I have been anxiously aware of and semi planning for since last year and it went really well! I even got asked by a recruiter for my resume before I even mentioned it and they are a REALLY cool company. They make non-animal based collagen with an over all goal of ridding the need of animal products in scientific fields once and for all! I also got to speak with recruiters for Pfizer, and many other companies that specialize in creating precision medications for diseases. I am hoping this will end up in an internship this summer, which I need in order to get my degree. I still cant believe I'm only a year away from getting it and to the point where I'm talking with recruiters to actually WORK in it. I truthfully never thought this would happen and even though I am exhausted much of the time its an incredibly fulfilling feeling. I have been able to do some art here and there (will upload a few things after finishing this). Its been mostly linework but its been a nice way to relax when I find a bit of spare time between classes or in the evenings. Feels like I'm slowly turning around the long burn out I've been having.
I am still hoping to find more time to return more fully here. social interaction and finding time to write out messages has proven kinda of difficult as I dont get much time to myself that its filled with school and being an introvert, I typically want to recharge in some dark corner with my cats hah.
I have missed yall though and I hope someday I can find the time to maybe even stream again. Anyways, wanted to give a shout that I'm still around and thinking about yall. I really do appreciate all the insanely wonderful comments that have been left. I read every single one even if I dont have time to respond to them all or if it takes me a few weeks to get to it. BTW I'll be at FWA. I wont be dealing but attending. I doubt I'll have time to make badges for anyone but if anyone I know is going and wants to hang out, HMU!

Alright, the Big Update

I have missed you. It has been so long that I'm not even entirely sure where I left off so I'm just going to give a general big update on my life and where I'm at. I'll try to keep it less then a novel....
"Why did you go? :("
Truthfully, I made some Big mistakes about 5 years ago and I had to pay for them. In many ways, because of my mistakes, my previously safe circles no longer felt safe and I really needed to look at myself, my choices and what I was going to do. I left basically all of my social groups and I did a lot of self isolating. I lost a lot of trust in people and lost faith in myself and my internal idea of self. I needed to figure out who I was and what kind of person I wanted to be.
I am still picking up the pieces that got shattered, but I believe that who I am now is on the right track and I am learning to love myself for the first time in probably my entire life. I am re-learning to trust and learning how to know who my actual friends are. Its been really difficult at times, but I'm getting there and proud of my progress in who I have become.
"What have you been doing in the mean time?"
I am currently a junior as an undergrad student studying Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and (hopefully) getting a minor in biotechnology. (I absolutely love it)
"Does that mean you're no longer doing art...?"
Yes and no. I actually put up the paintbrush because it was destroying my body and because the communities I was in had essentially gotten destroyed, I felt a bit outcast and lost with art. I no longer wanted to create and had burned myself so badly I wasn't entirely sure I'd ever draw again. My identity took a huge blow. I still struggle with the idea that I gave up and "failed". However, I am now picking it back up and have done a few commissions here and there throughout the years and a few science-themed pieces for school. I can no longer really make massive pieces and motivation to draw and create are still somewhat rare, but I have learned to love art again and I am working on my own sense of self expression. I actually no longer have many of the tools I used to make things with, so most of what I do is linework. I'm sorry for those that loved my full illustrations, I do not know if I will ever get back to that level of creating again, but hey I'm still here and there is always time for that. So yeah I still make art, but not nearly in the capacity that I used too.
"So why are you coming back now?"
Its a few reasons really.
The main reason is I want to develop community again and get back in touch with what I loved about FA. This was the first place I felt safe to be me; I developed friends and memories and found my art through here. I am kind of hoping I can find that inspiration again. I also needed a place to casually be an artist again. Other social media sites I truthfully feel like there is competition to be seen/become popular and I just..don't need that in my life. I have enough imposter syndrome already and I need a place I can just casually post, make friends, and be myself. I need a space for myself to feel safe in and FA had notoriously been non-judgemental in the past. Again, yall welcoming me back put tears in my eyes and kind of solidified I made the right choice. I missed yall.
"So what now?"
Hell if I know. I expect and hope to be semi-active on here when I'm not in school. My degree can be really time consuming and can take everything I have to keep my grades up, but I will do my best to keep up and make connections. I will still be prioritizing real life over online social settings. My interests have fully shifted to the life sciences, so I am a bit afraid I wont quite be as interesting as I used to be on here as an artist..but hey I ams what I ams. I do hope to make more things that are tied with these interests, I just no longer care if it helps me become popular or get noticed like I used to. So yeah, I guess I'll just be kind of a casual on here.

Well I guess I should end it with "I'm actually happy"
I love the career I'm going into and I am genuinely proud of the progresses I'm made personally and towards my career. I have made friends who are insanely cool and inspirational, I've learned more about the world and feel I've grown as a person. I definitely still have problems with depression and identity, but they don't last as long and I'm now okay that I struggle with these things vs believe I am broken. I am going to continue down this path and try my best to help others and myself. If yall have any questions I'm happy to answer them. I am happy to be back and hope I can maintain the energy to post and stay active.

I hope you’re doing alright! I am currently in the middle of final exams so I haven’t gotten a chance to properly update stuff. I will finally be off this semester on Wednesday and after doing a bit of a celebration for surviving this semester I will get to updating the horrendous backlog of mostly portraits and sketches I’ve been doing on twitter for the last few years.
I will likely be pretty slow and I might post things in chunks to save time but we’ll see. Figured I’d just have fun with being back and interacting with folks again. I have missed y’all much more than I realized. Thank you for the big warm welcome backs. It made me tear up a bit after a very long semester and so many years gone. Y’all are wonderful😭🥰

It seemed to me that comments and general user to user interactions had drastically dropped in the last few years on fa and for me sales also drastically started to drop.
Its possible it could be me?
I'd like to give FA another go and make a genuine effort to see if I can again make a bit of a living off of here. Well see.

I have come back different and changed. Im still who I always was, but I'm also fundamentally different. For the good or bad, only time will tell. Here is to hoping for the positive.
This account will return and it will be like the early years. More business, less personal. I appreciate all who had stuck around, you will always have my appreciation and gratitude.
Outside of an online presence I will be scarce in the furry communities. I will not be attending conventions for a fairly long time. There may be a few acceptions, but overall I will be avoiding them. I will be attending different conventions unrelated to furcons.
With that said, im hoping I will post regularly again, I'm hoping to have an online store up and running ans hope to expand my products. Itll be slow progress at first, but i hope it will have a steady build. I hope by this time next year i will have enamel pins, shirts, originals and other unique iteams for sale. Here is to the future!

What do people like seeing on buttons?
Posted 10 years agoI wont say anything specific...yet, but I'd very much like to make some buttons and wanted to know what folks would be interested in?
Currently I've kind of already decided on making a set of "bug" buttons
Spiders, beetles and some unique butterflies
Maybe 3 or 5 in a set
but what else are folks into?
What buttons would you want to see from me? And I'd like to keep the buttons in sets or themed
Just easier to sell them that way xD

For now unlimited slots. These will be done traditionally, scanned and you will be given the jpeg. I WILL NOT be mailing these out.

Quick update(larger one coming soonish..)
Posted 10 years agoALRIGHT, so now that I have a brief moment to breath I will update on the going-ons
First things first I will NOT be able to make it to fangcon next weekend. I'm pretty bummed about this, but I just got back from illuxcon two days ago and have been processing all that I've learned..Sorry for those who where hoping to see me there. Just not enough time to prepare for it :<
But that brings me to Illuxcon!
For those that DONT know what IX is it is a fantasty art convention where the big leagues like to go, talk and be creative. It's a con run by artists FOR artists.
It was a BLAST. I got to meet some of my art heros, hang out with some amazing people and learn/gain some direction. This has also sparked me to change my "art name" to Kirsten Fugett versus Harper. Fugett is my maiden name and I'm using this as to keep me and the other Kirsten Harper illustrator separate and make it less confusing x)
Tho for tax reasons I'm still required to keep my paypal Kirsten Harper..for those who buy from me in the future.
ANYWAYS. I have a LOT of catching up to do and will require to dig myself out of the small hole I've placed myself in. I'm ready to move, full speed ahead and will be opening for commissions of ALL types(and some very new ones) VERY soon. I will most likely be holding an auction for BOTH traditional and a digital piece(this will be your chance to get a FULL illustration from me) I hope to open both in about a week..so BE PREPARED!!!!!

a VASTLY under appreciated artist is opening for commissions! So you should go give him a hollar/watch!

I will eventually be opening for these as preorders for FC. But slots will be limited!
What are you paying for exactly?
A 3.5X5Inch (2100X1500pixels at 300DPI)fully detailed portrait badge
That will also be printed off, lamented, and shipped directly to you with a clip.
You will receive both the full resolution file with and without your characters name.
The best examples i currently have are crops from larger paintings, but it shows off the level of detail and the size of the full res files.

The price may even go UP for the full on detail ones after this! As I'm currently not 100% sure how long these will take me and really your buying much more then just a badge x)
ALSO badge can be flipped horizontally if you feel that will suit your character better!
Price is $80 SHIPPING IS INCLUDED. If you'll be attending FC(OR ILLUXCON) the price will dropped down to $70 and can be picked AT con. If attending illuxcon we will have to make meet-up arrangements.

And again as a reminder i plan on opening for FC preorders mid November-early December. After that I'll most likely open for more commissions mid to late January.

Posted 10 years agoSo I've got some water color and colored pencils and i'd really like to just experiment a bit with them and was wondering if there would be interest for some really cheap(I'm talking $15-25) headshot/portrait potentially badge like commissions? I'm only really expecting to make these about 3X4-Max 5X7

I havnt messed with watercolor in years, which is why these will be heavily experimental, but the sketch itself would technically be worth more alone and i'll be scanning the sketches before i'll start color.
These would be totally artist freedom too since I'd like these to be kinda fun...but yea any interest?
I'd love to do trades for it too!
