Zootopia (Spoiler Free)
General | Posted 10 years agoYes. Very Yes.
It was a very good movie. Perhaps a truly great movie. Why? It's a message movie that does not beat you over the head with (most of) its messages and figures that, when you are old enough, you will sort them out for yourself. It points out flaws in folks and in lines of thinking without pandering or patronizing. This movie would have resonated 50 years ago, 25 years ago, 5 years ago, and what it speaks to will still resonate 100 years from now. One wonderful scene shows how a character's statements, which seem very honest, organic, and truthful, take on an entirely different tone and meaning when viewed from a different perspective. The story structure - cop and con artist team up to solve a case - does seem a bit worn, but I can say this is one of the better movie of that genre. Now, beyond that, this is a movie folks may watch multiple times JUST to catch all the incredible details they missed the first time through. I'm going to be hitting the paws...er...pause button a LOT when this hits DVD.
As far as furs go, this movie is going to be the 'Robin Hood' for a whole new generation of lil furs out there. I so wish I could have gone to see this in fursuit. *sigh* Seaweed wouldn't even let me wear a tail *eardroop*
Ok, will wrap this up for now - very tired and can barely type. Hope y'all get to see it and enjoy it as much as I did ^^

Deadpool - No Spoilers
General | Posted 10 years ago Yeah, they tweaked characters like Blind Al, Weasel, Bob, and Ajax/Francis to fit the story more. Yeah, they tinkered with the backstory and such to make it a more audience-friendly approach. Yeah, it boils down to a generic "Origin Story" plotline we've all seen before. Yeah, it's a Romance. So did they pull it off?
Yeah, they did.
Actually, I'll go not-so-far-out-on-a-limb here and say RYAN REYNOLDS pulled it off. I really cannot envision ANYONE else pulling off this character, and the love for the character really shows through. It carries the movie through some of the more rote parts of the story. Also, going with a hard R rating actually helps this in the long run. A PG-13 version of this story would have played like a Disney Afternoon cash-grab musical. Speaking of music, there are some great musical choices in this film - too bad only a handfull of them appear on the soundtrack. You missed an opportunity here, Fox - soundtracks can be BIG $$$ if done right.
Half asleep here, so sorry for the scattered thoughts, but all in all a very fun movie. Now pardon me, I have to go cuddle my unicorn...
Yeah, they did.

More to come I hope, but a few words first off -
Our skipper for the Jungle Cruise was obvious a newbie - she still loved her job and was putting a lot of effort into it! Hopefully she will be able to deliver bad jokes with the same energy in a few years time.
This was my first time riding front car for Everest and man, it was awesome! I need to ride it that way every time.
Finally, this was the first time I have gone to Festival of the Lion King since Pandaguy's passing. It was a mistake. It hit me HARD. I really don't want to go into further details.
Anyways, enjoy the vids, thanks again to Monkiedude22 for posting them, and now....to shake this cold.

First bit of news of 2016 and it's........good?
General | Posted 10 years agoStarted off the year with a minor cold that knocked me out on Friday, and dragged myself to get an eye exam for my driver's license renewal. One eye has held study, and the other one....has gotten stronger! *cue Rocky music* Considering the histury of eye problems my father has had and that I am set up for, I'll take it!!

Star Wars: Spoiler Free
General | Posted 10 years agoWow. That was....fun. I'd recommend seeing it. The 3D is well done and doesn't feel tacked on. I really think space and animation lends itself to being 3D. It's just nice to see a Star Wars movie that, unlike the prequels, has no preset destination to reach, opening the galaxy back up to endless possibilities.
Last Call for cards
General | Posted 10 years agoOk, now that everyone is back from MFF, I am putting out one last call for Christmas cards. To all of our friends - if you know my significant otter you know that she probably has lost all your addresses and names, so if you want a card from us this year drop me a private note with your (real) name and address, and we'll get you a card out this weekend. ^^
Call for cards!
General | Posted 10 years agoIf you know me or Seaweed well, and want a Christmas card from us, private msg me a note with your (real) name and addy and we will try our best to get one out to you! :)

Thanksgiving's a wash...
General | Posted 10 years agoYeah, working retail sucks this day of the year. Go in at 1pm and am supposed to get off at 10pm (LOL, yeah, right) - so we'll see when I actually get home. Then I gotta work 4 hours tomorrow and get the weekend off. Man, I need this weekend badly....
2015 can bite me...

Yet Another Loss
General | Posted 10 years agoMy Aunt, my mom's sister, just passed away. Long story short is that her health has not been that great at all, but this is still yet another blow. I cannot say I was extremely close to her, but thought well of her and she was always supportive of me. She'll be missed.
Another Loss
General | Posted 10 years agoWord came from my father today that our family's cat, Calamity, passed away last night in my dad's arms. She was well over 20 years old, and we knew this was coming, but it is still sad. She led a full and happy life, and died as she lived - loved.
Memories and Dole Whip
General | Posted 10 years agoIt's been 3 years now since Pandaguy's passing. But I find myself less depressed thinking about his passing over these last few months and instead remembering the good times we shared. It's good that I turned that corner, but last night I discovered a local ice cream parlor sales Dole Whip, a favorite treat of his. It hit me very hard, though I powered through it. But it's made today even more bittersweet. *sigh*

His films were not perfect, but Scream and the original Nightmare on Elm Street will forever be classics of the genre. Another talented artist we've lost this year. At this rate the entire 2016 Oscar broadcast will be a "in memorium" segment :(

A More Upbeat, Update Journal
General | Posted 10 years agoAfter spending time with my father in Pensacola following mom's passing, I am back home safe and sound. Yesterday we made a detour to Charleston to enjoy some local sites before attending a taping of Antiques Roadshow and having some stuff appraised. So...
1) Passed by the church where the idiot shot and killed black worshipers. We did not plan this, and it was a solemn moment. It really makes you wonder how sick a fuck you have to be - racist or not - to do something like that.
2) Made it to the South Carolina Aquarium. It was a pleasant experience, with lots of live demos, animal interactions, touch tanks, and sights to see. Aquariums, by their nature, can only be so interactive - and they did a great job making this one as interactive as possible. Oh, and there may have been otters...
*Seaweed Squee*
I took a pic of Tina with her otter swag, so keep pestering her until she tweets it and uploads it here!! (Actually, spare money was tight but they had some great sales going we took advantage of).
3) Visited the Fort Sumter Museum next door. Taking the ferry over to the fort was an extra charge we could not afford, but the Visitor's Center was very nice and informative.
4) We then went to our hotel for the afternoon/night. It claimed to be a Motel 6, but I think it was more like a Motel 5. Sketchy is one word for it. Despite being a no-smoking room the room reeked of smoke. Some stuff seemed very modern and up to date, but the TV and air unit (both of which did work fine) seemed to belong to another age. But on the upside, right in front of it was..
5) Osaka Habatchi and Sushi Bar. It was very unassuming on the outside, but very nice on the inside. Sushi was affordable and very, very good. The only downside was our appetizer came out after we were finished with out rolls - I suspect our server had forgot to put the order in at first. Oh well. Overall still a good experience.
6) After a.....sleep, we got up (very) bright and early and got to the convention center for the Antiques Roadshow. Man, I am glad we got there early because it allowed up to get in and out early ahead of the other 4999 people coming to get stuff looked at. As far as that goes, Tina had 2 things appraised - a 1st edition copy of How the Grinch Stole Christmas with a broken spine that was still worth $200-300, and some Animalympics animation cels that seemed to stump them a bit. They basically said they were worth what she paid for them, and that they were an investment that simply had not matured yet. I took some costume jewelry from my grandparents that they said represented high-end, art deco costume jewelry from Germany/Czechoslovakia and was est. at $100-125 (nice, considering they found it in a house they had bought). And finally the one we really went for - my copy of Charles Darwin's "On the Orgin of Species." It turns out I was correct, it IS an 1st edition of the American printing, and they suggested getting it rebound, not restored. A professional rebinding (he recommended an English person by name) could run $1000-2000, but the book itself could fetch $2500 at auction, so even if done there would still be a return on the investment. In any case, I was expecting it to be worth more in the low to mid hundreds, so I was pleasantly surprised. After that we headed back home and am now resting up.
It was a nice diversion after all the stress of the last 3 weeks, one I sorely needed. So time to collapse and gather my strength for the coming work week. Ugh, not looking forward to that.....
