FoxFire
General | Posted 4 years agoGreetings furry readers
I found a new furry word - there is a thing called FoxFire. No not an Internet browser! It is a type of bioluminescent fungus. The fox in their name could be Old French for "false" but it can just as well simply mean "fox" .
Information and photos here. They are quite beautiful.
https://viewkick.com/foxfire
Now for a amazing history fact. In the American Revolution war, the first combat submarine saw service. It was named the Turtle. The depth gauge and the compass of the Turtle used FoxFire (i.e. bioluminescent fungus infected wood) in their construction to allow the instruments to be seen in the dark of the Turtle interior.

Who knew. May the world pleasantly surprise you each day.

VR experience rental
General | Posted 4 years agoGreetings readers
I have wanted to try the VR experience without investing in equipment. To my astonishment, I found a company that rents
VR experiences in my area. They provide the games and all the equipment (headsets, controllers, and computers) needed.
If you have the same curiosity, maybe your area has a VR experience rental also.
If you are in Southern California, here is my review of the company in my area.
Disclaimer: I do not have any financial or other interest in NOOBS.
Location: Redlands CA
$20/hr/person
https://www.noo.bs/
Here is their equipment setup.
Two single person VR stations tethered to computers to run the VR experience/game you choose. Headset and one controller for each hand included. You must stay in a 5 foot area due to the tether.
One large open Free Roaming VR area for multi-player games. There are two model of VR equipment here. One model works off an infrared grid field laid down in the area. A computer in your vest calculates your position in the VR world. The other model reads the physical room surroundings. There is a cell phone sized computer in the headset that calculates your position in the VR world. That is why the walls have crazy shaped and colors on the walls. For controllers there are hand controllers, controller gun, and leg/arm controllers. Arm and leg controller allow you to kick and punch. The game you choose determines the controllers you use. The open area can accommodate two to eight persons at a time depending on the VR world running. Four is the ideal number.
NOOBS offer a very large number of VR games, and experiences. If on a single VR station, you can change to a different game any time you want. In the Free Roaming VR area all players participate in a multi-player game.
There a 15 feet stainless steel table, and chairs, for eating. You can bring your own food or purchase snacks from the snack machine. Just down the street, and around the corner, is every fast food you can name. Drive up is Covid safer than indoor dining. There are 8 recliner chairs facing a large wall TV. Others can watch what you are watching in your headset.
There is ample parking. And easy freeway access. The business is family owned, and they are very friendly and helpful.
If you are curious about why everyone is so excited about VR, you need to experience it. I hope this may help you satisfy your curiosity.

Disney movie solves a 62 year cold case
General | Posted 4 years agoGreetings all
For all you who are fans of Disney's "Frozen"; here is a trivia fact to add to your collection.
The cold case:
“In 1959, a group of seven men and two women set out for a 200-mile expedition into the freezing Russian wilderness. They unfortunately never returned, and their remains were found at their last campsite in a confusing state. Their tent had been cut apart from the inside, some of the hikers were found in various states of undress, and others showed evidence of blunt force trauma. The mystery, now referred to as the Dyatlov Pass incident, has sparked over sixty years of conspiracy theories as to what exactly happened, ranging everywhere between foul play, Soviet military experiments, and even a possible Yeti attack.” [1]
The solution to the case:
But the case has been solved thanks to an animation technique used on Disney’s “Frozen” movie to create such realistic snow. Thanks to this animation technique, researchers were able to model a small avalanche that accounts for findings at the scene when the rescue party arrived. The modeling finally settled what happened.
So next time someone downplays animation as useless entertainment, remind them of this story.
Valuable science sometimes comes from unusual sources.

General | Posted 4 years agoQ: What is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything:
A: 42
Now all you science fiction fans know this comes from "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", a book I can recommend to even people who do not like science fiction. It is a hilarious comedy and brings deep introspection to the meaning of life though strange character and stranger situations. After all, we all are looking for the ultimate question of life and what it means. It is called being alive.
But did you know that this year "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is 42 years old!

How time flies when you are enjoying a road trip in the universe!
Happy reading

p.s.
IMHO, if written today the book would be called "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe". We have expanded our view of reality some in 42 years.

SPAM
General | Posted 4 years agoGreetings all followers
Since we all use computers, we are all concerned about SPAM. No, not the Viking kind, not the lunch meat kind; the computer kind of SPAM
But SPAM has history longer than most know. The first use of the Advance-fee scam SPAM was during the French Revolution (1789) [2]. A person would receive a letter called the Spanish Prisoner Letter. It would ask for a small fee to help get a French aristocrat out of a dangerous area.
In the 1804 the telegraph was used to send spam. Western Union allowed telegraphic messages on its network to be sent to multiple destinations. The first recorded instance of a mass unsolicited commercial telegram is from May 1864, when some British politicians received an unsolicited telegram advertising a dentist.[3]
Another well-known fraud also got its start in 1920 when P. Crentsil sent the first “419” or advanced-fee fraud letter to a contact in the British colony of the Gold Coast, today’s Ghana. Crentsil signed himself “P. Crentsil, Professor of Wonders.” He was charged in 1921 with three counts of violating section 419 of Nigeria’s criminal code, and a whole industry was born. [4]
After computer networks where established, the first known email spam (although not yet called that), was sent on May 3, 1978 [1]. It was an advertisement for a presentation by Digital Equipment Corporation for their DECSYSTEM-20 products.
It was the 1970s when SPAM became the term used for unwanted messages (usually jokes or Monty Python sketches) college students would send to everyone. The term derives from a famous Monty Python sketch, first broadcast in 1970, where a couple ordering breakfast is confronted with a menu that is heavy on one specific ingredient, SPAM. [5]
It was not until 1993 that SPAM was first officially used as a term. From a post from USENET by Richard Depew to news.admin.policy, which was the result of a bug in a software program that caused 200 messages to go out to the news group. [6]
So you see we are not unique in dealing with SPAM. But we are more aware, because of the Internet, of the types of SPAM and how we can avoid falling for them.
May you enjoy the Internet and not get entrapped by spam.

Vampire Vegetables!
General | Posted 4 years agoVampire Squash, Pumpkins, and watermelons. Oh My!
No, for real!
Some Balkin gypsies believe any Squash, Pumpkins, or watermelon left outside at night after it is ripe, or 10 days in the field after Christmas, or in the field during a full moon; will turn into a vampire vegetable. Once a vampire, the vegetable will wiggle and roll around and make growling noises. At night the vampire vegetables menace the local people, but how I could not find. It is reported you can kick a vampire vegetable away if it gets too close to you. But only boiling the vegetable or burning it will destroy the vampirism.
I am not one to belittle others' believes, but the sight of a vampire vegetable rolling after someone is just too amusing. If you want to read more about this belief, I have included citations below.
May everyone be amused today.

Bathbombs
General | Posted 4 years agoHave you ever wondered about some English language words? Like bathbombs. Now why would I want to blow up my bath? Or are bathbombs instant bathrooms that come out of a small package; like Pokémon do! Just a set of amusing thought that crossed my horizon today.
May your day be full of amusing thoughts and kind to self and others behaviour.

Furry Study
General | Posted 5 years agoHi all
I am re-posting this from a telegram group. You may want to help.
This is a furry study, but not associated with FurScience.
A furry (not affiliated with FurScience) is running a study about furries, and is having a bit of trouble getting participants! If you've got a few minutes and want to help furries study the furry fandom, check out the link below - I'm sure she'd greatly appreciate it! :)
"Hello all! My name is Victoria and I am a furry and an undergrad student from Carroll College working on a Carroll College IRB approved study on gender expression found in fursonas and how that plays a role in identity in the furry community. I would love to hear about your experiences with gender as furries in this survey!"

Float - a Pixar SparkShort
General | Posted 5 years agoGreetings
Here is a touching story of fatherly love, and fatherly growth. It is one of Pixar SparkShorts.
It is not specifically furry, but encompasses the idea of acceptance (like the furry fandom does).
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Something you may like
General | Posted 5 years agoGreetings everyone
I found something you my like.
It is on Apple TV+. There is a free 7 day trial for Apple TV+.
Stillwater is a panda that lives next to three kids. Stillwater tells stories and helps them understand their feelings. The animation is top notch, the stories are full of warm feelings; without being sappy. Each episode is 30 minutes. Stillwater is the friend I wish I had growing up.
Google Apple TV plus stillwater to get to the show easier.

PROTECT YOURSELF
General | Posted 5 years agoIn this time of epidemic how we protect ourselves has changed. Maybe you stood in line at the grocery store. Are you worried that you have been exposed to Covid-19 infected person. Now California has released a FREE smart phone app to tell you. The app I completely voluntary. You must install the app. Here is how it works. Once you install the app on your smart phone, it records the randomly generated numbers of any other Bluetooth equipped cell phones close for a few minutes. If someone tests positive for Covid-91 in the next 14 days, they can allow their smart phone Bluetooth RANDOM NUMBER log will be used to notify your phone that you were exposed and include the date of exposure. Now for privacy concerns.
Privacy features in the app
-Bluethooth log events are deleted after they are 14 days old.
-NO personal identifying information leaves your phone.
-No location tracking is collected
-This app has been installed over 4 million times since Dec 02, 2020 without anyone finding and issue
There is much more privacy information at https://canotify.ca.gov/ . Look in the FAQ
So why use this app? It is effective in stopping the spread of the epidemic. 19 other states are already using this app to reduce the epidemic spread. It has been tested by 10,000 ON CAMPUS students at University of California San Diego and was very effective to stop infection spread on the campus.
To get the app, go to https://canotify.ca.gov/ and click on the button for android or apple.
