FUN FIND: Conventional Wisdom
General | Posted 6 years agoA Ted Talk by Arthur Drooker about his photographic exploration of conventions, how conventions fill a need to belonging to community, offer transformation, and how conventions changed him. Furry conventions, Mermaid conventions, Fetish conventions, and Abraham Lincoln conventions are used as an examples. Give one a new perspective on conventions. Definitely worth the listen.

FUN FIND: Time-restricted eating, it is good for you
General | Posted 6 years agoRestricting eating food to the same 10 hours window each day can
- reduce weight by 3%
- reduce tummy fat by 4%
- improve cholesterol levels and blood pressure
all without changing what you eat. Water and tea (no sugar) is allowed all hours. Hard to believe, but scientific studies have shown it is true. And it is medically safe for most persons. Best to check with your doctor first to be sure it is safe for your specific situation.
Researchers tracked a group of overweight participants who followed this approach for about three months. "Typically, people would go for an 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. eating window," explains Dr. Pam Taub, a cardiologist at the University of California, San Diego's School of Medicine, and an author of the study [3]
"We saw a 3% reduction in their weight and a 4% reduction in abdominal visceral fat," [3]
"we saw that cholesterol levels improved and blood pressure [levels] also improved," [3]
Time-restricted eating (eating all calories within a consistent 10-hour window; except water) supports an individual's circadian rhythms and can maximize health benefits, as evidenced by previous research published by the Salk team. [1]
The pilot study included 19 participants (13 men and 6 women) diagnosed with metabolic syndrome who self-reported eating during a time window of more than 14 hours per day [1]

FUN FIND - how spreadsheets answer WHY
General | Posted 6 years agoSpreadsheet Footnote: Electoral College & Apportionment Edition
Nov 20, 2019
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JN4RI7nkes
Do you like knowing WHY?
This YouTube video is for you. The video shows how a spreadsheet can help think about solutions - in this case the apportionment of Electoral College votes based on population. The obvious answer of 'divide population by seat available' has issues. The current system used is enlightening. Only a spreadsheet could give that "aha I understand why now" feeling.
Also very educational if you want to know how Electoral College votes are apportioned.
I hope you enjoy.

General | Posted 6 years agoOn April 9, 2019 the world-spanning network of telescopes called the Event Horizon Telescope zoomed in on the supermassive monster in the galaxy M87 to create this first-ever picture of a black hole. We see the very hot, very fast moving dust and matter swirly around it. This accretion disk is extremely hot and glows brightly. Here is a explanation in English to explain the fascinating details.
