FUN FIND - SparkShorts
General | Posted 7 years ago“The SparkShorts program is designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows. Pixar gives anyone working at Pixar a small sum of money + 6 months to create a moving short animated film.
Some real interesting results.

General | Posted 7 years agoI call for an advance beyond group identity.
Be the group this or that religion; this or that political party; this or that race, this or that social group. I call to see ourselves as individuals in gatherings, not the group identity. I call to see others as individuals in gatherings. I call to see self and others as the basic definition of being - kind-hearted or mean-spirited. In every gathering of individuals, there are both. Kind-hearted individuals use the gathering (and doctrine) to build goodwill and support each other; mean-spirited individuals use the gathering (and doctrine) to tear down what is built and malign others. We cannot, nor should we, try to re-make others. But, we all decide, each day anew, which we will be.
BTW, I am not always a kind-hearted individual; but I play one in real life. It is close enough to be kind to self and others.

"An internal sculpture exhibit which people will feel but never see opened September 9, 1971 at the Exploratorium in San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts." [1]
If you find yourself in San Francisco, CA; this sounds like a fun experience to do. For an hour you get to crawl, slide on, and feel a variety of surfaces and follow paths; completely in the dark. Reports are it makes you much more aware of your sense of smell and touch. Unfortunately, it is 56 miles from Further Confusion. But who knows, maybe someone will make a version for a con.

Eugenics - the American movement we forgot about
General | Posted 7 years agoI remember watching a 1930 movie on Turner Classic Movie channel. They showed the the pre-movie theater short just like in th e 1920's. It began with a long shot of the county court house. As a car pulled up, the camera pulled in to the driver and passenger. The driver, an older man, began lecturing the passenger, a 20 something young man. It was the father telling his son about his responsibility to picking a eugenically fit wife. And this was the final time the son could consider his decision before they went in to get the marriage license. Now American Experience has produced a documentary of the history of eugenics. So yes this was a movement in America, complete with government support. And support from such notable personages as Supreme Court Judge justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood), and Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (of Kellogg Corn Flakes fame)
"The goal of the eugenics movement was simple and, to its disciples, laudable: to eradicate social ills by limiting the number of those considered to be genetically “unfit” –– a group that would expand to include many immigrant groups, the poor, Jews, the mentally and physically disabled, and the “morally delinquent.” At its peak in the 1920s, the movement was in every way mainstream, packaged as a progressive quest for “healthy babies.” This often was used to discriminate against immigrants and the poor." [2]
The main method of preventing breeding of 'unfit" was to sterilize them against their will. In the 1930's Nazi Germany adopted the United States eugenics research to justify genocide..
"And if you think this is ancient history, think again. 148 female prisoners in two California institutions were sterilized between 2006 and 2010 ... it was determined that the prisoners did not give consent to the procedures. In September 2014, California enacted Bill SB 1135 that bans sterilization in correctional facilities, unless the procedure shall be required in a medical emergency to preserve inmate's life." [1]

Fun Find - President Hoover made Mining Engineering History
General | Posted 7 years agoSummary: Herbert Hoover (later president of USA) and Lou Hoover (his wife) in 1912 undertake an English translation of Georgius Agricola’s De Re Metallica, a seminal text on mining engineering that only existed as a medieval Latin text published in 1556. This translation established the historical roots of Mining Engineering. On June 30, 1914 the Hovers received the first awarded gold medal by the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America for their translation of Agricola.

When compared to the YouTube segments for the original Broadway show, this performance holds up well. If you are in a dark room, playback in FULL SCREEN mode, use headphones, and sit close to the screen (24 inches); the experience is pretty close to being there.
The show is humorous, insightful, and the puppetry is amazing. I can highly recommend viewing this production.
'Avenue Q' " opened Off-Broadway in March 2003, co-produced by The New Group and the Vineyard Theatre, and transferred to Broadway in July 2003 where it won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and spawned Las Vegas and West End productions, two national tours, and a variety of international productions."

FIND: Sonic Hedgehog protein
General | Posted 7 years agoHi All you gamers. I found something interesting today - sonic hedgehog protein.
No it is not a special drink or food that gives Sonic super powers. It is a RL science term for a protein that helps forms hand digits and the thumb. Here are a few places it is documented. Who knew!

At time marks 4:35 to 4:53 they explain the reason we have thumbs
(to hold controllers and play video games) is because
of a protein at the base of the little finger that migrates
across the forming hand during development to finally reach the other
side of the hand and form a thumb. And what is this
protein called? The Sonic Hedgehog protein.
No, really. Check it out.

An ad for coming season of Dancing on Ice.
Features two polar bears ice dancing.
The animation is amazingly detailed, the characters go though trials, they grow and change, there is humor, there is hopeful triumph; all the elements that make a great story. Great watch.
Let's celebrate Valentines's Day
General | Posted 8 years agoGreetings all,
Let's celebrate Valentines's Day with a good old fashioned love story. But this story has some real interesting twists. It is much more than woman chases man, man gets caught. It is one of my favorites, I hope you enjoy it too.

“How to Have a Productive Phone Call With Your Legislator's Office”
A short article with specific points how to organize your call to make it count.
net neutrality
In a nutshell, the Congress of the United States is voting on Dec 14, 2017 to repeal net neutrality. A YES vote will allow Internet Service Providers (Verizon, Spectrum cable, AT&T, ect) to decide which Internet traffic gets higher speed on their networks and which gets slower speeds, or no access at all.
If you want more information about net neutrality, a GOOGLE search on NET NEUTRALITY links to many fine article.

Glove and Boots closing down!
General | Posted 8 years agoGloves and Boots is a two person puppet show on YouTube. They make original content. They pay for the productions by attracting advertising, which is based on number of views. IMHO, they are very funny and they do it without being vulgar.
The way YouTube and FaceBook suggest and deliver videos to the subscribers has changed so views are dropping. So Gloves and Boots can not afford to make more videos right now. Things may change. What can you do?
Subscribe to the Gloves and Boots YouTube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pADmml8Z1Bc
Search for Gloves and Boots on YouTube and watch the old episodes.
They are some of the funniest videos made.
The creative content creators on YouTube from SciShow to Gloves and Boots are all being squeezed. If you want to hear the conversation on the subject, here are some links.
