On Writing Humor
Posted 4 years ago“What I do now on many occasions is have, say, an inconsequential idea for a throwaway line that seems quite neat, then I go to huge lengths to create the context in which to throw that line away and make it appear that it was just a throwaway line, when in fact you’ve constructed this huge edifice off which to chuck this line. It’s a really exhausting way of writing but when it works…"

...or a Patreon, as the case may be.
In an attempt to motivate and organize my writing, though unlikely to ever be my primary income (as I doubt I could be prolific enough) I have put together a VERY work-in-progress Patreon page to support continued work on my Passgate stories and related ephemera.
The stories and works that already have been published elsewhere will be, as they are organized and probably cleaned up a bit, posted on Patreon as public content, available to all, as well as general updates on the progress, trials, and tribulations of the process.
The supporters of this Patreon page will receive first access to the month's stories as well as posts of revisions and probably some more private Writer-in-Progress journaling about the process.
The eventual goal is to create a publishable collection, at least e-book style, that one might buy and have for their very own but if I REALLY let myself dream I would love to hold a physical THING in my hand. As this is not a traditional novel, and I already have far bigger ideas for illustrations and knick-knackery than my current talent can give form, that thing has a very foggy shape right now. Still, if you would like to adventure in the fog and watch the beast take shape, so to speak, this is the Patreon for you!

Salutations ...or something

It has been ...a summer, I suppose. School has started, and corn harvest will soon. The tomatoes are well ahead of my using them and I have a dining room table full of peaches from the neighbor up the hill ripening up a bit more.
Writing has been iffy, and reading worse. I am just so ... tired after work and all.
Sleepy is needing sleep, tired is needing peace. But I live, and in life there is hope ...and more tomatoes, apparently.

Posted 9 years ago"Genghis Khan sired four self-indulgent sons who proved good at drinking, mediocre in fighting, and poor at everything else; yet their names live on despite the damage they did to their father’s empire. Although Genghis Khan recognized the superior leadership abilities of his daughters and left them strategically important parts of his empire, today we cannot even be certain how many daughters he had. In their lifetime they could not be ignored, but when they left the scene, history closed the door behind them and let the dust of centuries cover their tracks. Those Mongol queens were too unusual, too difficult to understand or explain. It seemed more convenient just to erase them. "

Adventures in yWriter
Posted 9 years agoThis has been ...an enlightening project. I have been going through what I have written in various fictive worlds and, in those cases where several stories exist in the same world, have been loading them into a organizational tool for writing projects, primarily novels, called yWriter5. ( http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter5.html if anyone is curious)
While I do not, at present, have plans of writing an actual novel, I find that loading each story as a chapter and then pulling out characters, locations, etc into the project organization tabs has been helpful. I have information available to me that is very useful in writing additional stories and, more often, ironing out inconsistencies (usually multiple names for a given character >.< ). I also find it handy for flipping through uncompleted stories and rough drafts without loading numerous different files to easily return to something when inspiration strikes. Others mileage will, of course, vary.
In any case, mostly organization at present, though dusting off a few odd gems. *wades back into the files*

Still lurking, occasionally commenting, and under certain phases of the moon even writing a bit. At this point, going through my stuff saved in several places and digitizing some longhand stuff, with the idea of being a bit more productive. I've reached a point, especially after some down time, where my poor brain which is not good with dates anyway, loses track of history in created worlds as badly as I have with dates in History-that-actually-existed class. Also, somewhere along the line, I apparently named three different characters Pandora, in addition to calling one rabbit in the Passgate stories by three different names. Cripes.
Since I am starting afresh anyway, I am also taking some time to look into other options that simply weren't around when I started posting here, a number of which seem easier to manage for writing submissions, especially looking toward longer work or more particular formatting. Some things, especially things in response to a few prompts and groups I specifically follow here will always be posted here of course.
As for "Real Life" ... it is strangely unReal, really. But there is hope, there is always hope....

Broken indeed. Have been broken some time really, but picking up pieces now. Actually trying to make one thing out of them. Living too many lives is ... tiring.
Sobriety, it is interesting to note, is not the twelfth step, but the beginning of the first.

Early Easter + Late Spring = Pretty Eggs in the Snow
Posted 12 years agoWell, not really, the Community Club did the egg hunt inside. Of course that limited the options for hiding the actual eggs and it became more of a "bowling for eggs" exercise when all the kids were let loose from the starting gate.
Anyhow, justifying the fact that it's almost Easter and I'm still here with the fact that Easter fell early this year, almost early enough for the actual Ostara festival. I must admit I do not celebrate THAT much more thoughtfully, as most of my attraction to Pagan festivals in recent years is that most of them do not show up on Wal-mart's Planning Calendar of Commercial Doom™. Anyway, still in the hunt for a job I can stand or a workshop I can stand to do what I need to do for my own. Well, I HAVE the shop, but I also have entirely too many people here. It is kind of frightening what long term forced contact with people and lack of private recharge time does to an introvert. I mean, i have SOME time to myself, but I scarcely get detoxed and settled into something before it is disturbed. I do remember when my stability was not so, well, unstable, but that has been a long time ago now.
...and no, loving them doesn't fix it. It helps, short term, that they are family, but that just means it takes longer to go too far.
Hoping Spring finds you well.

So. Many. Cookies.
Posted 13 years agoI have said before that the real Christmas Miracle is that we eat for three days and the refrigerator is still full. Well, this year, the 'fridge was a bit less full, though the house was more so. Three kids in a trailer house (four if you count the fifty-something as a kid, which is easy to do), then mate and myself brings the total to six, and that's just the two-leggers :p Granted one of the boys is actually moving back in with his own parents and the girl-child is going back to second semester at school in a couple weeks but ... *sigh* just been a hard stretch for a card carrying introvert left with ZERO recharge space.
Still, business progresses, in spite of family in many cases, and I'm carving out what I can. Paying bills is high on the list, but not highEST on the list. At this point, it's not avoiding breaking down, it's avoiding breaking down again. I've spoken for a long time about going crazy if I was in retail long enough. Folks laugh, and then act shocked when it happens. Just ...done. With so many things.
I've also said that I knew my wife didn't marry me for money, because she wouldn't have married an English Lit major with a fabric stash I could lose a small child in. While not, strictly speaking, wrong, as she certainly is supportive, I think ...I think I expected a bit more support in doing what I wanted to do, and less "get out there and get a real job" support.
...and I went, because I couldn't bear the conflict, I just want everybody to be happy. Still, I find my ability to make certain people happy without being miserable smaller and smaller, and if I'm miserable, I can't keep THAT up indefinitely. ...couldn't keep that up. And won't.
Not that this will make ME deliriously "happy." It's still WORK, after all. But it's mine.

Moving day coming, probably about a month out, officially, but then it will be ohmugawdNOW so trying to get what I can packed and into offsite storage. Excited about actually BUYING new place for workshop, and if all goes well I'll have my MLS finished soon as well. Spring practicum, summer comprehensive exam and fall *cough*class-retake*cough* and then I'll be done. Looking for "job" in field, of course, but my end up going self-employed/"independent contractor" route for that as well as what i want to DO, is needed but not in the budget of any single library archive that I'm interested in working with.
Also will have separate building for workshop so I'm not underfoot and making a mess in the house. Will do good for both mate's and my own sanity to not have my workshop running over into the rest of her storage :p
Writing? Haven't done squat lately, honestly. Even the long form RP that used to scratch that itch (among others) has fallen by the wayside as so many folks have gotten busy. Heaven knows I'll get back to it, but for the moment the closest thing to fiction I'm writing is business plans ;)

oh good, it wasn't LAST New Year - Life Update
Posted 14 years agoI had some fear, when I logged in tonight, that I would find nothing since LAST New Year's non-resolutions. Not THAT bad, though not much to show for it either. I have I don't even KNOW how many submissions I've Nuked and I did something I never thought I'd do and un-followed a few people. Found and followed far MORE people in the weeding process, bu that's the way it goes. I'd like to say it was quality vs. quantity, but frankly it's personal whim as much as anything. As my brother is fond of saying, "They get over it, or they die mad."
Whatever else goes to hell, with employment search and general madness, my Archive Management class is paid for. Still the not-entirely-small matter of getting to Kansas City for the three weekend seminar meetings this semester, but most of the work is online, so that will keep me busy. Probably doing more writing, though it may be more for the Passgate Project that I WILL publish eventually, but still considering HOW MUCH and WHERE. I DO know I'll be doing more sewing and hopefully ironing out how to get some of the faces in my head out into the world, probably as something sort of mask-like.
...and my New Year's Resolution? Same as it always is ... to be the sort of person my dog thinks i am.

Chronicles of Passgate site
Posted 15 years agoWell, nothing really new to see, but if you are interested in the work my head has been stuck in lately, I'll share the link for the work in progress that is my final project for my Web Dev class.

Feedback is, of course, appreciated. I'm still putting it together, I only have a couple of the story pages loaded so far, but it gives a general outline of what I'm trying to do, hopefully something that will develop further when I can host it elsewhere :) Enjoyed doing it really, though I would have liked about twice as much time to actually learn the "nuts and bolts." I guess I'm not quite as quick a study as I like to believe I used to be *grin*

has it been that long?
Posted 15 years agoGood grief.
So I'm working on the website for my Web Development class, organizing the Passgate stories into a central location on the off chance that, you know, somebody might actually give a damn, and to have my own web page.
Also, apparently to remind me I haven't actually posted to the Passgate world since August 2008 and haven't posted ANYTHING but this kind of "yes, I'm alive" journal entry since a scrap of poetry in January 2009. I HAVE written since then, I swear, and I knew it had been a while, but sheesh .... time flies when you're trying to stay too busy to think.

seeking feedback on a web writing gallery
Posted 15 years agoBeen fairly busy just coping and working on schoolwork, and I am going to ask for some feedback for a class I'm working on, if anyone would care to spare the time.
I need to design and build a simple web site for my Web Development class and I am going to be building a showcase of writing and related work. It's a class for a Library Science degree and an opportunity to organize my writing in one fell swoop, double win :)
Anyway, what i wanted feedback on is that I've seen MANY artist sites for individual visual artists, but most writing published on Directory sites such as FA, SoFurry, DeviantArt, which have their own issues with organizing so many different authors. Please do not feel like you need to answer every question, but I do have a few design questions I wanted to ask people who routinely read on the web:
How would you prefer to see it organized?
Table of Contents of present stories with historical fragments mixed throughout?
Fictional Chronography as if paging through the Librarian's collection - Prehistory, Recent history, Present?
In order of writing? (like paging through the gallery here :)
Are there any things about formatting or design that would make something admittedly text heavy easier for you to read?
Any particular problems to avoid?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
