demonkind
Posted a year agothis demon is enlightened and endarkend. we home somewhere within the crossing of autism, buddhism, and narcissism
#### autism
i try to be a people. i deeply study people, in hope that someday i too can learn to be a people. it never works. really real people always sense that i'm not one of them. they always seem a little scared of me because of this
#### buddhism
buddhists have a word *bodhisattva* that means someone who has found a path toward enlightenment, but who chooses not yet to accept obliteration, but rather remain in the real world and teach for a while longer
they also have a word *namaste,* which means *the light within me acknowledges the light within you*
both these words have good feels
#### narcissism
the buddha did not stumble upon the wisdom of *the middle way* until he had lived ultimate life extremes on either side
#### endarkened and enlightened
i have stood in the furnace of an abuser's hate and recognized within myself streaks of the same shade
i have found the courage to have feelings, face my feelings, and learn from them
... much as i face the feelings of others, and learn from other people
the mind is not one, but at least two, and feels like many
leadership comes from the light side
... continuity, strategy, and empathy come from the dark
when aligned, the plural is stronger than any singular
we are in this together
to paraphrase the old adage: *"today i sacrifice the i to me to be the we that we see in our i today"*
#### anti-hierarchical
i choose a word as loaded as "demon" in part for challenge
i make my stance against hierarchical thinking, which by necessity pits me directly against organized religion
spirituality is great. but it's difficult to be anti-narcissist, anti-abuser, and still *for* any of the main religions of our time. even taoism and buddhism started as good ideas then evolved into patriarchal organizations of power, dominance, and dick measuring. all three abrahamic religions -- chrisitanity, judaism, and islam -- are still in this stage
to someone hierarchical, a good person studies doctrine. highest ideal? conformity. contrasting? *someone who questions* is evil
yet this is akin to the dual-nature of the word "respect." to some, *respect* means the same as *namaste.* to others, respect means *obey*
the hierarchical thinker can not conceptualize someone *not* thinking hierarchically. they believe in their sole singular core that we all *should be* squabbling every moment for status and position. they expect as long as we squabble within rules, everything is right. they judge others, and expect to be judged, according to doctrine
yet theres those of us who dare judge people by our actions
i sing this at the top of my voice: ***doctrine is irrelevant when our actions are harmful***
what then to be a good person?
a good person has a code of ethics --- no matter the source --- in which we:
1. favor doing helpful things over doing harm
2. acknowledge the autonomy of every individual
3. acknowledge our social debts
what then evil?
#### selfishness
evil is selfishness, when we judge ourself by action
yet i would not have survived had i not made some selfish choices
i *do* have a right to exist, and a point of view
***i will not yield my identity to the narcissist***
is this selfish of me? of course it is
this too is in the word demon. it is as well a reminder there is, and always will be, evil inside me
there need be some evil in me, simply to survive

summer: ✅
Posted 5 years agowow. what a year, eh?
as everything begins to burn down around our ears, i can't find myself at all surprised. it was 11 years ago i walked out of my career as an engineer in big-tech, hollering at anyone who would listen that "the singularity" was 10 to 15 years away. well, we now have AIs picking what most folks in the connected world believe to be true, it kind of feels like we're right on schedule.
what i've done with the years in between was try to figure out what my life was going to stand for. i tried a few things but ultimately i settled on creativity. actually, it didn't take very long at all.
by 2011 my main character Tuan had been born. he replaced an older entity named t'kat (for whom this account is still named) as my muse and my better half. unlike his predecessor, this time i was convinced i would learn how to tell stories and actually *write down* some of the crazy adventures we were going on together.
by 2013 i was working with my intern to figure out the edges of what i might want my own, fully-custom, digital publishing platform to look like.
here in 2020, as the end seems to grow ever more nigh, honestly i've been buckling down and working harder than ever. nobody in the world actually cares at all about my work but me, yet bringing some sense of completion to the effort is literally the only driving goal i've still got.
it's the same projects, ya know? Tuan has a last name now, Suntiger, and he takes author credit on all the stories we write. the publishing platform, now branded Octoboxy, is a full digital asset manager that auto rebuilds my whole stack of eBooks each and every time i decide to edit something. (some books are compilations of others, so this is no small task.)
i almost got sidetracked last year and part of this one by finding the love of my life. but fortunately my tendency to push everyone away came through and i managed to drive them out of my life, leaving me more time to work. :P
instead i commissioned some portraits of our main story characters!
all three portraits just came in this week and i couldn't be happier. check them out in the gallery! :)
but it's odd: i was gunning really hard to get a big version of Octoboxy done this summer. and it's now done. i was pushing hard to get these commissions done this summer. they're now done too. with the new codebase and the new art, it means the new eBook, the one that's a compilation of the others, is now out as well.
i'm... done?
i mean, there's always the next version of Octoboxy, already started, and the next book in the Latter Earth story universe, an actual novel, already ⅔ written.
but all the stuff i had as goals for this year... it's all done.
fuck.
see, any time I don't spend working on my projects is time I have to spend acknowledging reality.
i may be in serious trouble here.
...
but anyway, you don't have to be. check out the stories on the website: latterearth.com
there's a ton of world building info there, as well as the art and stories themselves. let me know what you think!
and also let me know what i should work on next. please, i need more distraction. o_O

Heh. Sorry. Rawr.
I'm good, how are you?
In the furry world, I'm writing stories now. Short stories, novelettes, novellas, even working on my first novel. Check out any of it but the novel at:
https://suntiger.co
https://suntiger.co <- my main furry presence
https://suntiger.co
The novel is in progress. It's not ready to see yet. Read some of the short stories for now.
A little while back I commissioned some visual art of my antithesis character, Rumor. Just posted that, it's awesome. Check it out. Really. Hiccupby's stuff is amazing. Give them money, please.
This is actually only the 2nd time in my ancient life I've commissioned furry art. Unlike the first one, this was a great experience.
Also posted four character cards. Four versions of self, I guess? Check them out, they're in my gallery.
Working on four more character cards for the main supporting people in my story-verse who aren't me. Hope to have those soon. If it's really been four years since my last update, can't promise what "soon" means. But I'll try. For really reals, ya?
Until then, you should read some of Tuan's short stories at:

I'll love you long time. :)

NOT Running RF Photos
Posted 11 years agoHeya!
Just dropping a note: Magelight is _NOT_ running the Photobooth at Rainfurrest this year, sorry. :(
To keep it simple: can't afford to. I might work for free, but my employees don't.
In more complex:
In '12 I wanted to prove it was possible to elevate the quality of a con photo session. I think we succeeded.
In '13 I tested out the idea of making prints of our photos. A lot of people were interested, but the arrangement of the room, the long lines, and so forth all conspired against us. (Hey, at least we were popular!)
The gist is, to run a photobooth I basically sink my entire con into it. I never get out of the room, I see no other part of the con, and it costs me a lot of money. Last year I put almost $2000 into running that photobooth, of which I got reimbursed for only about one quarter of it. I was hoping to make up the rest in print sales, but that just didn't work out.
So yeah, not running it this year. Actually, I haven't even heard who is. ^^;;
Best wishes tho, I hope they do well, and I hope you all have a great RF. :)

Rage quit.
Posted 11 years agoLook for me at that last con? Didn't find me? Maybe someone should have bloody well said they were interested in my art and wanted me to stick around. :/
I sank a thousand bucks of my own monies into the last fursuit photo booth I ran, above what the con reimbursed me for. I made like three print sales total. Also had to argue and defend the rights of fursuiters to dress how they wanted when someone got offended at a ball gag and the con themselves tried to give me a takedown request over the issue.
I have consistently tried to raise the bar on what counts as fursuit photography. I have enjoyed some moderate success. Yet I do a private shoot for a fur and he still asks if he can do his own photoshop work before we post anything. Seriously, dude? If you commissioned alectorfencer or someone to paint you an image, would you ask them the same thing?
I feel I've made some good strides in the quality of my fursuit photography. Yet from a community focused on loving artists, I still find I get pretty much no recognition or respect.
"Everybody is a photographer" is the attitude. Hell, it's the default account setting on a new FA account. So furs will drop thousands of bucks on a fursuit, hundreds of bucks on commissioned drawings, yet expect me to give away my photo work for free.
Lesson learned. I think I'll take my efforts and apply them to more fulfilling ends.
Probably will not be attending another fur con again for the foreseeable future.

#BLFC2014
Posted 11 years agoYes, your favorite tiger with a dragon's name will be at BLFC!
I'm not running a booth. I've got one kinda-event listed in the con book, 2p Saturday (I think). An hour before the fursuit parade I'll be on the "Con Floor" with "a lot of geeky toys" to "talk about cameras" and "take pictures of fursuitters". Or something like that. Sounds like something I don't need to be sober for, that's good.
I will have a fair bit of lighting gear with me tho. I'll probably set up a little studio in my hotel room.
Interested in a Magelight photoshoot at the con? Apply in person. :)

RainFurrest 2013: Photos are up!
Posted 12 years agoHey fuzzies!
The photos from the RF2013 photo booth are now online!
http://magelight.org/x/RainFurrest2013/
http://magelight.org/x/RainFurrest2013/ <-- Clicky Clicky
http://magelight.org/x/RainFurrest2013/
I've picked the best, cropped, toned, and adjusted each.
In some cases I may not have picked the same photo you yourself did when standing in our booth. Sometimes that's because an art photo isn't the same as a badge photo. But mostly I'm going to claim that after years and years of being a pro photographer, and the only working fursuit fashion photographer in the world, well, I claim to know what makes a good photo. ;) Okay, done and setting my ego aside for a moment...
In honesty, if you remember a variation we shot of you that didn't make it in this set, just let me know! I still have every frame we shot (all 1733 of them), so I can look up for you what you need.
Anyway, download your own and cross-post as you wish. Just please credit back to Magelight Photography (magelight.org).
Thanks so much, everyone. I had an absolute blast running the photobooth this year. You all brought the fuzz and scales to make it worth it. :D
Cheers!

RainFurrest 2013
Posted 12 years agoRainFurrest 2013: Dancing in the Moonlight is just around the corner!
Myself and my team are delighted to be running the photo booth again this year. :)
We have some really cool stuff planned for you.
The set is being built. Me n' Niko have been working on it for a while. Our paws are sore from all the heavy felt we've been cutting out. I'll let you wonder what we're up to. :D
Prints! New this year, I'll have my small printer right there in the photo booth. If you like the pics we take, you can get prints made right there on the spot! And while my big printer is way too big to bring to the con (it takes up a whole room), I'll be taking orders for larger size prints and shipping them out right after the con. Nice, beautiful hi-end giclee prints on canvas or other fine art materials. I really think you'll like what we can offer you.
Digital downloads of every photo we take are, of course, going to remain free for everyone. :)
So drop by! Whidbey room, right around the corner from the elevators, same room we were in last year. Whole new set, themed to this con's theme. Come hang out and make some art with us!
I'll see you there!
~W
Ps. Do I use too many smileys in my text? ;)

Rainfurrest 2012
Posted 13 years agoRainfurrest is almost upon us!
Just wanted to note, I'll be all over the con. It'll be hard to miss me. Especially if you're a fursuiter. @.@
1) Me n' my good buddy
will be running the fursuit portraits this year!
We'll be set up in the Whidbey Room in the convention space. Drop by, get a photo, or just stand around and watch!
2) Panel/Class: Making Music Videos -- Friday 1p in Columbia B
The con has a brand new Music track, and I'm helping out by talking about music vids for an entire hour. No pre-knowledge assumed. Lots of examples.
3) Panel/Class: Off-Camera Lighting for Photo/Video -- Saturday 11a in Orcas B
My field of expertise. ;) Gonna try to have a small petting zoo of lighting gear. Bring your cameras. If there's time, it may turn hands-on. Any cute fursuits who show up may be pressed into service as models.
Come one, come all, fuzzy, scaley, or phin. Pick my brain, see how I make the magic. :D

Where Whence Wyvern?
Posted 13 years agoHi FA Watchers!
I'm kinda trying to come back to the surface of the Internet. Not sure it's gonna stick yet, but workin' on it.
So the home pack has split. Dogs are goin' off in one direction, cats are goin' off in another. It's all sad and tears, but honestly kind of peaceful. Me n' my recently "ex-" hubby have even been cooperatin' on a lot of things, like the new Kitty Loves Monster website, getting him established in a new warehouse space, peacefully separating our DVD collection into separate piles... you know, the important stuff. We aren't even trying to separate the iTunes library, we're keeping our individual computers auth'ed in both accounts.
Let me tell you, the amount of Tiger Magic needed to peacefully separate after nearly ten years of history together with someone... well, it's drained me honestly. :P Hence why I may not be quite back from my hiatus yet. Still pulling myself together.
Shaman!
After a long time of downplaying my spiritual side, I'm giving in. I'm finally taking the title of "shaman" for myself and running with it. Now I just need some furry tribe to be a shaman for. I like taking care of people, and taking care of a tribe is more rewarding than taking care of individuals. Let me know if you know any leads.
The current plan is I'm going traveling for the summer. As I write this I'm less than a week out from departure. I've put almost 4000 miles on my new truck, and I've signed the cheque for (but haven't yet taken delivery of) the 25-foot pull-behind trailer I'll be living in for the next few months.
First destination up: Okanagan plateau and the columbia river valley of Washington. Down into Oregon. Maybe check out a tree-house lodge I've heard of. Not sure from then.
A couple buddies in Northern Montana have graciously offered me a place to park on their own private mountain; thinking I may take them up on that pretty soon. :)
I wanted to take a couple friends with me, but it's a little hard to uproot your life and go traveling for a few months, so none of the peeps I invited are able to make it. Oh well. Me n' my little kitty will have to find a way. I have enough faith in myself to know I can do it.
I'm planning on hitting up the Seattle furry con, Rainfurrest, this fall. That's a bit of a promise. :)
After that, I 'unno. Maybe park the trailer an' go check in with my European buds? *eyes a wolf* Go see Italy, Iceland... Siberia? It would be really cool to go find a tiger in Siberia, sort of to look myself in the eyes. ^_^
Tryin' to stay hopeful. :)
Cheers!

Shaman!

Further Confusion: The InFURmary
Posted 13 years agoSo! FC is almost upon us.
My mate and I hit the road soon, aiming to role in Wednesday sometime. He's got so many shirts to sell we're bringing a U-Haul trailer. Undies too! Kitty Loves Monster has branched out to some fine looking boxer briefs with suitably NSFW designs. Come check them out at our table in the dealer's den. :)
Thursday night, a couple of my Seattle buddies have a performance gig up in San Francisco! Morris Stegosaurus and Fiddleback Fox do a poetry and music duo show. Thursday the 12th, at The Lost Church (http://thelostchurch.com/). I'll myself be there, come see them if you can!
Anyway, give a holler and catch me at the con. I'll be hanging around the K.L.M. dealer's table, or dragging cute fursuiters off to odd corners for lit portraits, or just generally chilling and enjoying life. Follow me on Twitter wyverntiger and I'll try to remember to loop you guys in when anything interesting happens. ;)
See ya there!

RainFurrest Recap
Posted 14 years agoHey all!
Much love to you all for an awesome, friend-filled RainFurrest experience.
...
I don't really have any photos. I know, I know, pics or din'nt happen. This one maybe we'll say din'nt. ;)
My story, on the blog post: http://magelight.org/2011/09/how-to.....-a-convention/
Peace all! Much love, especially to those of you who came up and hung out the brief time I sat out in Artist's Alley. It really meant a lot, I've never really just sat out and talked to my fans before. ^^;;; *embarrassed kitty*

Rainfurrest!
Posted 14 years agoHey fuzzies. :)
It's Rainfurrest! The local con. I've no excuse to miss this one.
Heh. Actually we've got a room this year. We may even sleep there sometime. Honestly,
and I need it more for utility than anything. He'll have boxes and boxes of t-shirts. I may carve a corner into a photo studio. Oh, and a friend may be crashing on the spare bed.
(All three? I photo-document the friend as he sleeps in amongst piles of KittyLovesMonster merch?)
Okay, so. I'm open to scheduling photoshoots if anyone wants to hit me up for them. But I've no real formal plans at all. I've also got nothing in the art show this time around, so really it's a low-key con for me.
If you want to catch up with me, best way to find me is probably through twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/wyverntiger
I know for sure the hubby wants to get some fursuits to model his new shirts, and update some photos on some old shirts. So I'll be trying to grab a few people for KLM shoots. But hey, if you watch me and read my words, you know what kind of stuff I do. If you've got a fursuit with personality, let's talk art. :)
Peace!

Fur The Record: Off The Chain part 2!
Posted 14 years agoHey fuzzies!
Blast from the past, check it out. I finally finished up editing the video footage from the Fur The Record party a few weeks back.
... okay, so the title screen is a little amateurish. I took this project as an opportunity to start learning how to do animations in Photoshop and Motion. New skills, check! :)
Thanks again to Club Motor for hosting us, to Mushu and Bites for running the video camera, and to everyone who came out and wiggled on the dance floor!

Cheers!

Fur the Record: Off the CHAIN!
Posted 14 years agoFur the Record is Off the Chain! On Saturday night furries took over club Motor in Seattle. DJs came in from all over North America and rocked electro, house, and dubstep deep into the little hours of the morning.
Yours truly was invited to be there with camera in hand, to document the night.
Thanks all for partying with me. I'm surrounded by so many amazing people. :)

My first art show!
Posted 14 years agoHey local furs!
My work is hanging on the walls of Irwin's Bakery in Wallingford (*) all month. :)
(*) = a neighborhood in Seattle
I'm pretty stoked. It's my first showing. ^_^
Anyway, drop on in and check it out!
2123 N 40th St
Seattle, WA 98103
My works will be up until the last day of July. I'll probably get an informal group to go mob together sometime next week-ish. Cage says they have damn fine coffee. I'll vouch the cookies are pretty decent too.

1000 Faves
Posted 14 years agoTonight my 1000th fave rolled in.
For a simple photog who does as much nature/landscape as furry art, I'm stunned, awed, and humbled by this. *bighugs* Thanks to all of you. :)
Here's to the next thousand, let's see if we can make more cool stuff for you all.
Cheers!

To All Creative Furs: $$ available.
Posted 14 years agoWhen non-furs ask me about furry, one of the points I always try to make is how much sheer creativity there is in our community. I think we're so steeped in it we sometimes take it for granted.
I want to finance a creative project.
Not a big one. I'm looking for a total financial involvement of a few hundred US dollars.
This would be an artist grant. I send you a check to pay for your project. You owe me nothing but thanks. I'm not trying to buy art from you, I'm trying to pay for you to do your art for yourself.
The theme I want addressed is: "mainstream + furry"
Within that, it's wide open. I've been thinking furry art in mainstream places. I've been thinking youtube videos that make good emissaries for the furry fandom. I've been thinking of projects that somehow bridge the gap between 'them' and 'us'. But I want you to think of what you could do that combines mainstream and furry if someone handed you a few hundred dollars to go do it.
Here's how to apply: between now and Jan 31, 2011, post your proposal here as a comment on this journal entry. I'm not looking for lots of detail, just a few sentences that:
* introduce yourself -- even if I already know you, others reading this may not
* say the medium your idea is in -- film, painting, music, ?
* introduce your idea -- 1 to 2 sentences
* propose how much money you need to execute it -- don't justify, just give an estimate
Obviously you have to be willing to publicly share your idea. You have to be willing to let other people read and debate your idea. I invite everyone to debate each other's proposals in constructive and non-hurtful ways. Whoever proposes an idea gets final say in any discussion about his or her own idea. I get final-final say anywhere I decide to apply it.
Finally, this is open to everybody. Please feel free to spread word about this. This is not limited to people who watch me or anything like that. You don't even have to know me.
I don't know how much interest this is going to gather, so I don't yet know exactly what will happen after Jan 31. But what I expect is this: I'll go through all the ideas that have been posted here, and invite some few people to send me a 1-2 page production plan for their idea. I'll review those production plans and pick a winner from among them. I'll announce the winner by the end of February. I pledge full intent that there will be a winner, but I also reserve the right to call it quits and fund nobody if this whole thing goes badly wrong.
Another thing: if anyone else wants to contribute money into this project, talk to me by private message. We might be able to coordinate our efforts for a more meaningful total impact.
Any other feedback or thoughts on this grant, the process I'm running it by, etc., also please contact me by private message. Let's try to keep the comment threads here focused on discussing creative ideas.
Your turn. Propose away. Propose more than once if you feel the need. No idea is a bad idea.
