Sort of hiatus
Posted 8 years agoOkay, so, what with school starting back up, I'm living on campus in order to help my studies go more smoothly. The effect of this is that the internet provider has blocked FA. I can get on by tethering my phone to my computer, but for now my ability to respond to FA will be sharply limited. If you need to get ahold of me, I'm fairly easy to find on telegram, or drop me a note here and I'll see about getting you my email address the next time I check. (I'd be on more, but I don't want to devour all my data.)
Megaplex
Posted 8 years agoSo, Megaplex 2017. Not my first convention ever, but first one in quite a while. Pretty sure AC '14 was the last con of any kind I went to, meaning it had been a while. I liked it. Back in '06 when I went to AC for the first time, attendance was around what this year's Megaplex had, and that was alright. I could find people I was familiar with, Meeting all the cool artists and other furs at the con was a lot of fun, and some of them really helped me to have a very good con. Also ended up getting a fair amount of art which I'll try to get posted for once.
Ask me questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Didn't end up getting to see much of anything outside of the con, but there's always next year.

Priorities in the artists I watch/commission
Posted 9 years agoOkay, so
jonas had a poll ( http://strawpoll.me/6865813 ) about what you look for in fandom artists and after typing up my thoughts about the poll, I thought I'd post a journal about them and see what people think.
Number one is probably communication and reliability as people have noted above me. That said, everything else on the list has its place on the rankings, too, so in order of appearance:
Quick turnaround: Hey, same day art is awesome. Asking someone about a commission and them getting on it right away? That's pretty neat, but it does tend to require they have the time to do that. Some folks have a long queue and you're going to end up waiting. Some folks work slowly so you're going to have to wait no matter what.
TL;DR: nice to have, but not required/feasible in all cases.
Low Prices: Alright, this one's one you'll see a lot of folks picking, and... sure, it's important to not charge 100 bucks for a sketch. Well, unless you're in so high demand that people are still lining up to get sketches at that price. Frankly, as much as my wallet prefers cheap art, I find I am willing to pay more for art that the artist can put time, effort, and care into. Also, art is (or can be) a business, so you sort of owe it to yourself to charge enough that it's better for you to do art than to go get a (second?) job flipping burgers. After all, if you can't justify the time and money spent on the art, you just might end up needing to hang up the artist hat in favor of getting a job that you presumably hate because it's that or be living on the street.
TL;DR: many people want dirt cheap art. Some people prefer affordable art. I prefer affordable art.
High Quality: I like high quality. I love it, even. It's expensive and consumes time though! Which, you know, is sort of the tradeoff. This one isn't the most important because I'm watching artists all across the spectrum. If you've got something that appeals to me in your art, that's all that needs to be said.
Communication: covered.
Creative ideas: Incredibly broad, so no ranking. In some contexts, creativity is awesome! Of course, it's possible to come up with ideas that just don't appeal to me, too. "I like creativity... as long as the ideas are still interesting" is a non-answer, so no ranking.
Consistent schedule: This one goes back into the communication and reliability. Specifically, if you've got a consistent schedule, it means you're easy to reach, and that you're reliable. Very highly ranked. Oh, also, consistent schedules mean you're probably doing something art-related a lot of the time, and getting to see artists grow their skills and try new things is a lot of fun.
Unique art style: Your style is your style. It'll change over time, generally, too. If it's similar to other people's art, well, that happens, that's fine! Impressionism was a movement, it wasn't just one person staking out a style as theirs and theirs alone.
Collectibility: I do tend to prefer original pieces over prints, but that's more of a convention thing than for figuring out who to watch. Put another way, I don't want (for example) Dark Natasha's art to brag about hacing her art, or for some monetary value it might have. I prize her art because it's jaw-droppingly awesome. No ranking.
Interesting commission incentives: discounts for commissions that are in a theme? Can take or leave them. File this under "creative ideas," as an interesting incentive might make me think about getting a piece, but a different incentive might completely fail to interest me.
Friendliness: Always a plus, never a minus. Not worth my top spot, though.
Flexibility: broad heading, no rating possible. Flexible on payments? Eh, can be nice, but also leaves you open to getting scammed. Flexible in terms of being willing to run with a piece if someone likes the sketch enough to want it colored? Sweet! Flexible in terms of tastes catered to? Not something I need from artists I like following. I'm actually quite happy with people who are SFW only or whatever. For my money, artists are supposed to enjoy their art, so if they have to restrict things to keep to their comfort zone, props to them for recognizing what they enjoy and having the backbone to not back down because someone's badgering them to do porn or whatever.
Exciting streams: Eh, another mixed bag. On the one hand: I'm quite happy with streams where there's nothing more intense going on than drawing, some music, and conversation as the mood strikes. On the other hand, I really do tend to get bored if a streamer is not responding to conversations. One of my cardinal sins in art streams is when the streamer has a skype/mumble/etc going on and is chatting along a mile a minute and mostly/completely ignoring those of us in chat. Same thing, and this is completely personal, I find it's actually rather stressful to try to pay attention to a stream if there are half a dozen people all talking in a Skype. Particularly when it also means lots of chatter and not much art is getting done.
Okay, so, yeah. Tell me what you think

Posted 11 years agoOkay, now that I'm starting to fight off the con crud I'm going to be posting my pictures from AC bit by bit. Only put five up to start, but since they're all from Wednesday afternoon I'm sure you can guess there's a lot more to come.
Back from AC!
Posted 11 years agoOkay, so Anthrocon was a whole big pile of fun, though I got reminded on why some rules are rules.
Rule 1: Take care of your feet! If you're going to a big con like this either get some inserts or new shoes and get them properly broken in before the con or you'll regret it!
Rule 2: Sleep! Get it! I am pretty sure I'm gonna catch a case of con crud because I slept like crap this year, no idea why. Ended up getting home from the airport and crashing out for a 5 hour nap not long afterwards.
Aside from that, I got some cool art, met some really cool people (and missed running into other cool people I need to communicate better with next year, AC's too big to guarantee you'll bump into a given fur. Also, stand by for a crapload of photos, pretty sure I took something like 500 pictures, though I have to dump the blurred ones so probably only a fifth of those will get posted. Going to throw last year's pics into scraps and might even post this year's pics in scraps, not sure on that one though.

Offline until Monday
Posted 11 years agoMight be able to answer something, but will be on phone so assume I'm offline until Monday evening for Anthrocon. For those of you not going, well, I'll try to take a bunch of pictures so I can share with you all.

Posted 11 years agoWill probably go back to the old one after the 4th, but for now this one is so fun I'll keep it.
It's over.
Posted 11 years agoOur cat, "Qtip" (so named because of the white tip of his tail( died this afternoon as he rested in our front garden in the sun. The vet says that he had dozens or hundreds of instances of metastasized cancer inside of him, so any future he would have had would have been short and painful. We're going out to the backyard to have a funeral for him.
May he Rest in Peace.
May he Rest in Peace.
F*ck Cancer, seriously.
Posted 11 years agoOkay, so I don't post a lot, but I guess I needed to share.
We have a cat, he's 19 years old, a shorthaired ragdoll that's survived losing his teeth to tooth decay (still caught bird and mice once in a while despite that) as well as diabetes (he's had to get insulin a couple times a day, and has had at least one crash so low the vet wasn't sure he'd recover or if he did if he'd be the same kitty. Turns out he did and was.) and other issues related to aging on top of last summer getting mauled by something we never managed to identify.
Tough old kitty, in other words. Most mellow, laid back kitty ever, loves snoozing on beds or in the garden out front among the flowers.
Friday he wasn't himself, really, and my mom tried to haul him in to the vet, but none of the vets had an opening for him. So, Saturday he got taken in. We knew something wasn't right, but we were hoping it was something simple like dehydration. Apparently, the vet needed to do an xray to figure out what it was, and it was as bad as it gets. Cancer. Highly advanced cancer of some sort, and fast-growing, because his blood work was fine six months ago.
As I type this, he's resting outside in the grass like he's always enjoyed doing, but he's lost weight, he's not eating, and really doesn't have any energy, doesn't walk very far and jumping onto a bed is pretty out of the question. We'll take care of him as long as we can, but when he starts going downhill, well, it'll be time to say goodbye to him.
Even losing cats of 16 and 20 years old at different points in my life (they shared the house at different points, I'm not THAT old... yet) it never gets any easier.

Back again
Posted 11 years agoSo, I've been quiet lately, though folks probably didn't notice much as it's normal for me. Anyhow, with the summer I'm trying to get out more and get some exercise, walking is fine and i'm working on swimming too. Nowhere what most folks think of when it comes to working out, but it's tolerable to me which should let me keep at it rather than quitting in a week. After all, i don't have folks to drag me out when i don't feel like it.
Anyhow, I walked over to the zoo two blocks away, and got a few pictures, I might go back again at a different time of day to try for better lighting, there were a lot of shots I had to just throw out as not good.
Oh, and I'm going to Anthrocon, so if you're going, see you there maybe!

That's not what I wanted for my birthday...
Posted 11 years agoWell, I had to know it was coming eventually, but when I went to get my license renewed, it turns out my eyesight's finally gotten to where I need glasses to get my license renewed.
I knew it was more or less inevitable at some point, both my parents wear glasses, but... not what you want for your birthday.

All done!
Posted 12 years agoAnd so, we close out my first year of taking pictures at Anthrocon. I think 88 pictures is a really good start, though we'll see how many I manage next year, and how many I throw out. I culled something like 40 pictures from my camera that were hopelessly out of focus, leaving me these 88. Digital cameras are wonderful like that, they let you see your mistake fast enough to retake the pic.
I've learned a few things from the process of taking these pictures and putting them up, too. For one... spontaneous, unposed pictures can work really well, but sometimes it's probably better to get the fur's attention to let them clown around a little and pose. For another, be patient and let the camera finish focusing before you take the shot. What i really learned though is how awesome you all are, both those of you who let me take photos and those who IDed you for me. Seriously. I'd heard it said that "comments are an artist's food pellets" but once i started posting photos I really understood it. Your comments made it so much more fun, and making new friends gave me extra resolve to make sure I make it back to AC next year! Hopefully I won't be as shy about hugs and stuff either.
What next? Well, I'm pretty sure I'm the only fur within 100 miles of where I live, so there won't be any more furry pictures until I go to another con. if I want to go to Rainfurrest I better get on things, but... the friends I wanted to see there have to cancel, looks like. Might not be able to go to anything until next year, maybe. I'd like to hit up Further Confusion some year, see the artists who can't make it to AC for various reasons. That said, I could upload scans or photos of art I've gotten in my sketchbooks (not much) or random pictures if I see something that catches my eye in day to day life. Let me know what you think!

Update 2! Son of Update!
Posted 12 years agoAll right, collapsing for the night, will resume (and probably finish) uploads later today! Once I finish I'll post something more about this whole process, but for now? Thank you all for being awesome!

Update!
Posted 12 years agoSo, I've got about half my photos uploaded now, going to be taking the night off because I've run out of vaguely clever things to say for now.
If your message box is exploding with favorites, I'm sorry, I've been lazy and letting my submissions pile up, and I sorted through them some. I'm up to March now! It does make for a fun time, sorting through them though. So much wonderful art. ^_^
Tomorrow I'll be back to uploading more photos, i'm glad everyone is enjoying them so much, I hope to do a better job next year! Even if it means I have to wade through uploading everything again! I'll probably take pictures of badges or something unless people enjoy the game of "spot that fur!"

Anthrocon! (help needed)
Posted 12 years agoAll right! Anthrocon has been and gone, and I tried something new this year! That is, I tried my hand at photography, grabbing pictures of fursuits that caught my eye through the weekend. There's only one problem... I really should have made notes or something because I don't remember any names for 99% of the folks I snapped. So, if you recognize a suiter and i haven't credited them, let me know and I'll rectify this! I'm just the photographer with a crappy phone camera, they deserve the credit really. If you're not in the pictures, it's no slight against you, I was probably just distracted by shiny things or something. I'll even upload the blurry non-duplicates i kept, and let the suiters decide if I should consign them to recycling or keep them.
