Character Highlight: Sine! (by  ecmajor)

A very unique character this time - one that is a machine! Sine is an android, or rather, a design series of androids manufactured in a future Earth. I remember when first seeing her that I just loved the design and her incredible footpaws, yet there's that part of you that always goes "but.... she's a machine." XD Check out the details. As EC-Major explained:

"I should note that Sine is not one individual entity: there are many Sines, since they are machines built in a factory as a high-end commercial product. Their lots in life, their roles, as well as their personalities can vary considerably. Some of the answers would sound pretty weird without knowing this ;P"

Footpaw/feet type: Paws with bare textured pads and blunt, non-retractable claws. Skin in the fold between each toe is bare as well, fur is only on the front and top of the toes.

Orientation: Dependent on owner's preferences, but by default a Sine is not given a sexuality per se. She comes programmed with all the necessary information about it in order to understand biological life and behaviour, but how she fits into this if at all is up to her owner.

Relationship Status: Same as above. Your Sine can be whoever you want her to be... a sister, a maid, a friend, a partner.

Special Abilities/Powers:
* Sine is stronger, more agile, and generally physically superior to all but the most phenomenal human athletes. This gives her the most flexibility in terms of what roles and jobs she can perform.
* Sines do not need to breathe or eat, though they are capable of both.
* Their synthetic skin is capable of regenerating and sealing cuts and abrasions, but although the chassis is durable, it will need to be repaired if there is an accident. Chromatophores in Sine's skin allow it to change colour and generate patterns per the specifications of her owner.
* Sines are modular to some degree.
* Sine body temperature regulation can be adjusted. Want a cool friend in the summer and an extra warm friend in the winter? No problem.

Now, I knew a bit about Sine before, so I asked a number of questions on the character, here are my questions and EC's answers:

Q. Now, some more specific questions I'll ask so I can better explain Sine. I know she's an android, and I believe she's fully synthetic, correct? Does she have an origin story as to where she came from, who made her, and why? How self-aware is she; as in, is she just like a living being in terms of emotional, will power and such? While obviously incredibly attractive, does she herself derive anything from being involved in any levels of intimacy with others? Does she have any hobbies? (can be as innocent or crazy as you want really - just trying to help explain who she is to folks).

Yeah, Sine is fully synthetic. Her model is manufactured at a plant on Earth's moon, along with several others. She is a product of the consumer robots division of the Alpha Cygni Corporation. Alpha Cygni's domestic automatons were given a non-human likeness in order to differentiate them from the human population, by order of the government after a decision made in court when robotics reached they point where distinguishing them at a glance from their creators was conceivably impossible. Some people were afraid of this, so a law was passed to make it illegal to create or mod an automaton to cause deception or conceal its nature.

Sine is programmed to learn and evolve within the confines of a built-in moral framework, so she can and will develop her own individuality while getting accustomed to her environment and her owner's wishes. A Sine's paramount directive is to obey her owner(s), except where this would cause mortal harm to others (It's not unheard of for a Sine to subdue an intruder in a break in, for example, though.)

Depending on how one defines love, Sine is capable of it; though (except in very rare cases) not to the point of irrationality, like humans. It's in Sine's basic nature to seek whatever makes her owner happy, and she derives satisfaction from that. A Sine with a significantly evolved individuality can go further than simple satisfaction, too. Hobbies and interests are well within her grasp as well, both those things chosen for her when she is initially configured as well as those she learns on her own as a product of her curiosity and personal evolution. Sine starts life essentially like a child; a curious blank slate that will grow and be shaped by her owner and her inquisitiveness.

Q. Now, Sine also has insanely attractive footpaws with perfect shapely toes, beautiful ball pads and even the shape of the body of her foot and how it ends in the raised digitigrade heel is sheer perfection. Yet... they are synthetic. For a paw-lower, would Sine like having them, say, massaged or pampered? Would she ever let people lick, nuzzle or do anything more playful with them? And more importantly... what does she get out of that in terms of feelings or enjoyment? And for anyone who got to touch, or experience her footpaws, what are they even like? Soft smooth soles? Do they feel synthetic or natural? Are they warm at all, cold? As you can see, they're certainly interesting because of what she is. Lot of questions will no doubt be in folks minds about them.

Sine is equipped with the same ability to feel and enjoy tactile sensation as anyone, so she is certainly capable of enjoying that sort of treatment, as well as giving it. If you enjoyed giving your Sine luxurious paw rubs, she would adore them equally. In being designed as an ideal, versatile domestic servant, a Sine more often than not ends up seeming like a mirror of her owner's desires, whether said owner simply likes having a really clean house, or likes worshipping paws ;P

Sine's skin is mostly smooth, with very minimal texture (it feels a little smoother than human skin, even moreso because it's hairless) It's made to feel realistic though, not like plastic. The softness: way it stretches and compresses, lends a lot to the simulation. Her paw pads, palms, and fingertips have a little more texture, for the sake of grip. But her pads are much softer to the touch than a dog's, for example. A special vascular network and spongy subdermal layer in her paw pads is able to firm-up voluntarily and make the bottoms of her feet more tough in the event she walks on something rough like gravel so it's less likely her skin will be damaged. As for the temperature of her paws and pads, that's adjustable like the rest of her body.

Q. Follow-up question; Is there a Sine-prime? Like a Sine that you would consider to be the most evolved or individual of the lot?

To answer your followup question, not really - though they may have a few prototype models living in a controlled environment somewhere in their Research and Development facility who are allowed to keep going on their original personality evolution without being reset, to see what happens. Or maybe there's a Sine who's sort of a "pet" of the company, sort of like Rachel in Blade Runner.

It's ripe for a "machine person becomes too self aware and breaks out of the system using her superhuman abilities. Several scientists injured." type story/headline, in any case, heh. They'd never let that go public...

Q. And lastly, for comments regarding her, I take it basically the same sort of comment etiquette you mentioned in your Artist highlight?

Sure, i balk at nothing, heh.

So... this is a very, very early Friday Paw-mail because I'm still stuck in Vegas. My flight out yesterday had a mechanical problem that first delayed it, then eventually ended up in it being cancelled. After three times (and about 4 hours) spent in very disorganized line-ups to get things sorted out, I'm on a flight again to Chicago today, then (if it's on time) will catch a flight to London, ON from there and be home by 4pm local time. I swear... I am cursed when it comes to Vegas - every time I've come here, I've had major issues with flights.

SO, this is being posted super early while I get the chance since I otherwise wouldn't be able to post it until tonight. :) I may have missed some good links this time around, but I've been crazy busy the last few days, so please excuse the unusual lack of paw-focus I normally have. :P

The convention I was at, the "Ignite" conference, featured the Mythbusters' Adam and Jamie as guest speakers, as well as Jonathan Goldsmith ("The most interesting man in the world") as one of the security panel mediators. YAY! More Cari-feets! On a sidenote, I wrote Cari a note just to say thank you for the incredible number of paw-related art she puts out every week. I don't know how she can crank out SO many finished pictures like that. I did want to say thanks on behalf of paw-lovers that she does this so often, and so frequently featuring paws. The Start of what looks to be a great comic - the second last panel offers a nice heel and partial sole view, but it's the last panel on page 1 that I added this for. As someone who has had a thing for feet for pretty much ALL of my life, that is EXACTLY what's going on in my head every time I see nice feet or paws. XD SO, SO true. Now this is cool! A very attractive Lemur lady done in Evil-Sprite's awesome style. I've seen a few Lemurs but they always have these thin, whispy sort of feet. This beautiful lady has big, meaty toes and pads, yet still retains that almost hand-like gripping ability. Nicely done!

I was super happy when I logged in a couple weeks ago to find this response waiting from Ermine! I also had one from Solaxe, so for the last one, I went with him, and saved this one for this time. :) I have been fan of Ermine's art for a long, long time and always enjoyed that she seemed to always do great footpaws in addition to just really creative and lavishly detailed pictures in general. I sent her the usual list of questions, and she responded with perhaps the most detailed feedback yet! So here it is....

Q. What sort of interest in footpaws do you have (if any)?
"I don't have a particular interest in footpaws exactly, and certainly not in a sexual way (not that I have any problem with folks who do, of course!). However, I *do* really love drawing them! You can probably tell by the way they always end up looking rather oversized in my work, and how they're visible in almost every picture ;3 "

Q. What type of commentary do you like on your work? What sort of comments do you not like, or don't want (say, creepy comments or whatever)?
"I am ok with all types of comments (I'm part of the "creepy comments welcome" group on FA, haha). I guess the one exception would be comments that are rude to the person who commissioned the artwork (like being rude about their character design). I usually only reply to some comments, but I do read all of them, and I appreciate them very much! Hearing praise for my work makes me feel like a dog that performed a new and fabulous trick, every time :D"

Q. Do you have anything you'd like to personally say to the folks in the Paw-Mail?
"Just thanks for showing an interest in me, and I hope you enjoy my art! I'm always happy to do footpaw-related commissions. My FA page is really the only website I'm very active on (I know, it's shameful, but I have a hard enough time keeping up with that and my emails!), and that's where I post all my commission-related updates, via Journal entries. I don't post much else except commission updates, so if you check my most recent post or two you'll quickly get a feel for how I do things and how often I open for new commissions. I don't use the FA Notes system, so the best way to get a hold of me is by email."

And there you have it! A great bit of feedback from a great artist. Go check out her work - it spans years and years and has all sorts of themes to it. Of course, bear in mind that a great deal is NSFW and there are many fetishes she caters to. So! I'm in Vegas safe and sound, though the one bump in this trip has ended up being the most ironic - I forgot the battery for the camera. Just before going, my mate said to take her camera (which has a WAY better zoom than mine) so I charged up the battery since she'd not done so for a month, packed the charger, and yet somehow in the rush to get ready, forgot to put the charged battery back in the camera!

As fate would have it, by complete random luck, I got the nicest hotel room I have EVER had, with a huge balcony that looks out over the Founatains of Bellagio (https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Fo.....474a6cdc71f0d6) with this epic view of the strip...... which I can't get any pictures of. >_< In fact, I'm pretty sure the only reason I got this room is because of the cruel irony of not having a camera battery. *laughs* Ah well. And yes, I did check on getting a replacement - it's a custom LiOn battery and Best Buy and Fry's sell it, but it's $50, plus it would run me about $40 in cab fares to get there and back to get it, so not worth it. :/

Anyway! Apologies on this being released later than usual, but Las Vegas is 3 hours behind my usual time zone, so harder to get it out on time. Also, it's not that long because I forgot to link in some picture I had at home and... totally forgot where they were now, doh! Still, lots to enjoy. Alright... on with the mail.

First two: A cool new tweak on Renki (shape shifer, after all). Look at those paw pads! Never seen a tiger-striped sort paw pad pattern before. In the second picture, he's enjoying the lovely footpaws of Cari's character Maple. Well okay, not just the paws. This pose offers a great look at those neat paw pads of his. #3 is just... haa... so awesome - such a blatant, wonderful paw-tease pic with splaying, wiggling toes. And the rest are awesome as well. Howdy all! DOH, nearly forgot to post this before going (doing so from local airport) I'll be in Las Vegas, NV, USA until late Thursday evening for a security conference thingy that I'm doing for work. While I will have access (kind of a given nowadays) while down there, my responses may be a bit slower than usual. I'll still try to get the Tuesday Paw-Mail out on time, and should still have time to start building up the Friday one.

Friday is a holiday, and given the long flight and 3 hours of time added into the day with the time change, the Friday Paw-Mail will likely happen either late morning or early afternoon instead.

Anyway! A lot of folks have asked how much work goes into these paw-mails, and the answer is somewhat varied. On the Tuesday ones (which are simpler) It's maybe up to an hour total, but in chunks throughout the week leading up to it with the largest part of the work being the final post to e-mail, FA, and Weasyl. The Friday Paw-Mails are a bit more work.

For Friday mails, I have to try and get a hold of artists and character-owners ahead of time and work things out for the list. Sometimes due to delays it can be kind of last minute. The extra info for an artist or character highlight does take more time to workout, write and format (especially annoying for the journals), but the end result is worth it. :) I'd say Friday ones probably involve closer to 2 hours of work with some of the background stuff that goes on.

Detailed Summary:
Defining Rylae is no easy task! I've had the personal honour of knowing Rylae for some time now, and when we're not shooting up zombies in L4D2 (and man are Rylae and I a dangerous pairing in that game), we've worked to try and refine just "who" Rylae is. A big part of the complexity is that Rylae is a LOT of things. The character of Rylae and the human behind her are basically one and the same. :) So we'll start with the more sure stuff; Rylae's a big-hearted, loving dragon who adores her friends, and enjoys life's simple moments. She can be very goofy, often to be playfully frustrating to those she cares about (just look at Darklurker's frustration with her macro-training). She can also be fiercely protective or vengeful if you wrong her or those she cares about. Last thing you'd wanna see is undead Rylae coming at you and nom your soul after some form of unpleasant demise. O_o

Where it gets complicated is defining things like gender, orientation and interests. Rylae's exceptionally dynamic here; her interests shift, or even fade from day to day. There are times when she is asexual - no interest beyond a loving hug or the companionship of someone she trusts. There are times when being female doesn't feel right, so she becomes male or a hermaphrodite... or sometimes just slips back to the more genderless undead. Other times, a sexual interest sparks and it may be a female longing, or a male one. Her partners may be straight, gay... or even multiple partners. And what worked for her one day, may not work for her the next. Anyone who knows her would come to understand this facet of her. I personally find it fascinating, and even inspiring because Rylae doesn't simply slap a single definition on who she is, rather, enjoys all she CAN be. Rylae answers to "him" or "her", regardless of what gender she's chosen as she just considers both valid.

When it comes to footpaws, Rylae has incredible ones. Often seen as plantigrade, her four-toed feet are beautifully proportioned with large toes, and a thick meaty sole. Apart from enjoying that they look good, her own interest in footpaws is as random and dynamic as her other interests, but she does enjoy sharing them with a good friend if they like them - or sometimes teasing folks with them! And if said good friend wanted to give her a long foot rub, she'd be quite happy to kick back and enjoy it. Depending on her form, her footpaws sometimes can shift to digitigrade as well. Their general design is pretty similar whether male or female.

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! Go have yourselve's a pint of Guinness after reading this (my personal favourite brew). :9

First off, I want to say thanks to all the kind words I got after Friday's dud of a paw-mail - some of you offered some cool ideas as to what to do if that situation happens again, and I'll definitely give that a try. Most of the time there is an abundance of pictures to sure, but every now and then the offerings get light. I think this time it had to do with a number of good-sized cons all happening around the same time.

One slight pet peeve I do have though is occasional feedback issues with artists. When doing the artists highlight, I tend to put a request out to more than one artist in the hopes that one gets back to me in time. I know life can be busy, and in some of the artists cases, because they're mega-popular, I know my message is one of LOTS that they likely have, but I do find it annoying when I don't hear anything back - especially when you can see via FA's notes that they read the note. :/ Nonetheless, I'll keep trying to get the artist highlight stuff for you guys. If anyone knows good artists who would be interested, please PM me and I can add them to the list of potentials. :)

So... this was a bit of a surprise find for me. While rendered human pics have been around for ages, I've never found them particularly interesting as the feet were always too weird looking, or too plastic-like or just... off somehow. The renders done by Restif here are the first I've seen that are actually really good. In this shot, he has three of a several characters he makes, and the thing I found really interesting is that he's not reusing the same model for the feet; each one has slightly different feet and you see it in the shape of the toes, the taper and such. Personally, I like the character "Lynette", who is the right-most one. To me, she has the most "perfect" feet (at least by my own standards/opinion). Here are a couple other nice ones of Lynette:

I just got back from lunch and one of my co-workers came to tell me the news - one of the most legendary and iconic Science Fiction actors, Leonard Nimoy, has passed away. I'm a huge Star Trek fan of the original cast and series as well as the Next Generation (pre-movies), and Star Trek certainly shaped a great deal of why I enjoy science, took a career in computers, and took up my interest in electronics and tinkering. Spock has always been a big influence on how I came to reason with things - always trying to take a logical approach over emotion, or reaction. And I always loved the Spock was mostly logical, but still had emotion at play - just... well managed. While others will play him, no one ever quite did Spock as well as Nimoy, and I highly doubt anyone will. There was something incredible about Nimoy's portrayal of the character; a certain touch no one else seems to have.

I've been a fan of EC's stuff for a LONG time. He's always drawn incredibly detailed work with extremely alluring poses and bodies on the characters along with super creative fashions. And of course, very often the work features immaculately well drawn and detailed footpaws. :) He's also a very nice guy - happy to respond to commands, and even for keeping his eye out for art (he was the one that told me about Tchai, who you may remember does those amazing paw-renders). So, a few answers to questions below:

Q. What sort of interest in footpaws do you have (if any)?

"I have a bit of a paw interest, though i don't think i'd go so far as to say it's a fetish. (I may have more of a fetish for bird feet) But paws are cute, and a bearer of cute paws deserves to have them worshipped now and then. ;)"

Q. What type of commentary do you like on your work? What sort of comments do you not like, or don't want (say, creepy comments or whatever)?

"I have no qualms with any kind of comments, aside from needlessly negative comments that offer no constructive criticism."

Q. Do you have anything you'd like to personally say to the folks in the Paw-Mail?

"Even though i don't quite understand in depth the paw/feet fixation many people seem to have, i am happy that the paws i draw seem to go over well with folks <3 From a discerning segment of the audience, a positive reaction over the object of said segment's fetish carries extra weight!"

I stumbled upon Sierra a while ago, and she has consistently starred in some of the BEST pictures, showing off her incredibly attractive footpaws. For more info, I'll just quote what AZ said:

Okay... I should say this right off the bat, I LOVE science, especially when it comes to space. This video is just breath-taking; it's a combination of footage taken during the last 5 years of the SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) mission. That we have footage like this, to me, is just amazing. I'm not enormously old or anything, but when I was a kid, we were just starting to learn how incredible the solar system looked. Voyager 1 and 2 had sent back pictures of Jupiter and Saturn for the first time, and I remember waiting anxiously to see pictures of Uranus and Neptune. There was no Hubble yet, and they also didn't know back in those days how to clear up Earth-based telescope pictures.

Today we have multiple systems observing the Sun, we have probes in orbit around Venus, Mercury, Mars and Saturn. We have rovers on mars and even probes that have landed on comets and far off moons like Titan. And whisking through the asteroid belt is Dawn - powered by Ion Drive, heading for the dwarf planet Ceres (after having visited Vesta). And soon the New Horizons probe will arrive at Pluto. On top of that, we have discovered not just some, but thousands of other planets out there.

We've gone from the blurry, black and white speckled pictures of when I was a kid, wondering if there were other planets in the universe to so many beautiful images and knowledge that planets are the norm, not the exception. And we have a goddamn space station! :D

WoooOOoooW... cold weekend here! While certainly not close to the cold some other Canadian cities get, it was pretty darn cold for Canada's "deep south" this weekend in Southern Ontario where the temperature fell to -29°C (-20°F) where I live in London.

So - LOTS of pictures for today's mail - so many I was starting to wonder if I should hold some until Friday. XD Anyway, the general feedback last Friday about including the odd human foot picture was all positive, so if I do come across nice ones, I'll include them with a "rl-human" tag to identify them as a real picture. As I said before, I'm very, very choosy when it comes to what constitutes an attractive human foot and thus far I have found only a couple photographers that a) understand what a good looking foot looks like, and b) are actually good at getting quality pictures of them. :P 99% of the other pictures all seem to be people using cell phone cameras with no understanding of how focus or lighting works.

And here's your real female foot for this one. Footografo is a Portuguese photographer with a great sense of what constitutes an attractive female foot, and a good eye for pose and setting. This beautiful foot is from the model Christa. Great shot in that includes the leg, background and features that beautiful anklet as well. The next photo after this is a close up. One of the other charms of Footogafo's work is that he offers these in full resolution and takes them with a high quality camera. Very pretty - that would probably make me trip if I had been walking by. XD

Hopefully no one's all that superstitious among you - but if you are, then I hope a bunch of nice paw pictures is a good way to start your day! Started mine with shovelling snow.... again... then went on to work to decommission two 9 year old firewalls and migrate the back-end networks to a new setup, which went smoothly.

So question for y'all - besides footpaws, if I stumble upon a nice enough looking human foot picture, would you be interested in seeing it/them? When it comes to human feet, I'm exceptionally picky - I consider only about 4 to 5% of females to have nice feet, and only 1 to 2% of males. And I would also never post anything but clean/SFW images of humans. I have discovered some stuff on Deviant Art where the photographer has at least a similarly discerning appreciation of them, so once and a while, a pretty nice shot comes along. So I'll leave that up to you guys - please chime in so I know what the general opinion is.

An artist that frequently features paw-centric work, Mr. Sprite does some of the finest two-toed footpaws around, and his details that go into the line work on the soles and toes (or between the toes) of his characters is fantastic. When I ask if an artist is interested in a highlight, I generally ask a few questions of them and work in their answers. In Evil-Sprite's case, the answers are so magnificently detailed, I'll just cut/paste them for you:

Q: What sort of interest in footpaws do you have? Can you provide details or any sort of summary.

"My interest in footpaws obviously derives from a foot-fetish, however in terms of humans I'm only interested in female feet, yet for non-human characters the gender doesn't matter to me. What I specifically like about footpaws isn't that easy to pinpoint. I really don't have a preferred type of footpaw as in the number of toes, pads or no pads, everything works for me, as long as it is done right. The foot itself needs to have a nice shape, with clearly defined features. I'm especially into thick feet that have very round features like the ball of the foot, heels and toes, this goes very well with two-toed feet for example. This is also why I like toony feet, what they might lack in definition or details they make up in thickness. Another bonus is to have these feet belong to mature female characters, showing off some nice wrinkles and little imperfections along their soles. Of course I also like the usage of said footpaws, mainly in any kind of macro/micro scenario. The point of view from below stomp picture is one of my favourite perspectives. In terms of clothing articles for footpaws, I don't really like socks or stockings, unless it is nylons or fishnets. I do enjoy seeing some types of footwear, mainly open ones like sandals, peep-toe or flip-flops (which are my favourite) and a big bonus is, when they are platform shoes. I guess my liking of thick feet also reflects onto footwear."

Q: What type of commentary do you like on your work? What sort of comments do you not like, or don't want (say, creepy comments or whatever)?

"First of all, I appreciate every comment on my works, even if it is just a smiley. I also appreciate if someone points out mistakes I made in a picture, which was not the case so far but if it happens, I'd appreciate it. Criticism is not something I'd like to read unless I specifically ask for it. Not everyone knows how to properly give constructive feedback. I do welcome ideas that some people give me, either be it by suggesting a certain scenario for a character or trying something different with my style. I'm also not too fond of tiny roleplay bits in my comments, like if people specifically ask for interaction with a character. I'm not a roleplaying type of person. I'll still try to respond to it though, I always reply to all of my comments. Troll or inappropriate comments will be hidden right away, I won't respond to them at all."

Q: Do you have anything you'd like to say to the folks in the Paw-Mail?

Doran (often called Dorey by his friends) is an incredibly friendly, floofy and wonderful dragon. He's very fun-loving, goofy an compassionate in all that he does. As a character wise, Doran is very close and personal to the person behind him - one and the same really, and I can say from knowing him well that yep - he really is indeed every bit of the awesome dragon you see here. :) Another cool fact - he's a scientist. Like... for real. He can legitimately say he's doing stuff FOR SCIENCE!

Able to shift between feral and anthropomorphic forms, Dorey has a wonderful pair of footpaws either way with unique black leather pads on blue scales. In fact... I just recently wrote a comment about them on his weasyl account as follows: a handsome digitigrade paw with deep, soft and meaty pads that exhibit a wondrous combination of toughness, yet plush and inviting softness. Their welcoming warmth and leathery texture extends in delightful smoothness to the cooler, blue scales of equally soft yet tough skin that shows so many intricate lines of tension with every moment of your four perfect digits, but none so much as the exquisite detail of the scaled skin between each glorious toe. Capped with their shapely and sharp talons, the toes and their teasing wiggles are a delight to the eye in every pose they take. And if, just if, someone's close enough to experience that warmth directly, they might also catch the delightful (if not inexplicable) scent of blueberries mingling in the wonderful aroma of those incredible footpaws.

Commenting on Images: Dorey prefers to have mostly tame commentary - maybe a bit teasing, but wants folks to bear in mind that he is taken, so most adult-nature stuff is an intimacy he reserves for loved ones. He delights in detailed feedback on his images and images others have done of him, and loves to hear the comments on neat projects like the paw-fashion stuff.
