i just saw a journal by hard-working artist box-cat calling out artists with bad work ethic (no one in particular, just a common furry occurrence) and this is something i think about a lot. i've seen a couple of artists with queues so long it makes my physically ill. AND ANOTHER THING....i used to be that artist. i would take literal years to finish things or never mail something i completed, etc etc. a lot of it was bc i was trying to do art in my "Free Time"...and anyone who slaves under capitalism knows that Free Time is hard to come by, and if you try to fill it with more work, even work that you enjoy doing, it becomes really exhausting.

anyway i thought i would give my tips on how to keep your work moving forward in a timely fashion, since ive done a lot of growing in this area:

-Keep Your Queue Short this is essential. I know its really hard to turn down someone who wants to give you money, but if your turnaround is fast, they will come around a lot more often. I take a limited number of slots, usually less than 5 (depending on the involvement of the piece)

-Stay In Contact no one likes giving a person money for art only to never hear from them again. I hate being asked for updates (which i know is silly) so i go ahead and offer them. i send updates at the sketch & inking phase, and sometimes the color phase if i have questions about it. most ppl just say "Looks great!" but it eases everyone's mind to know you are working on their piece.

-Use Trello For Real it can be hard to remember to update yet another site, but clicking things (for me) is a great reward. its useful for people to be able to see how much you have got going on before they ask you if you are available for work. its REALLY nice to be able to update that especially when you have longer queues or work times, again, it eases everyone's mind to know you are actively working on their piece

-Be Up Front i usually take a few big pieces and open for a few slots of something smaller (icons, sketches) to keep me fed in between. (no one has a problem with this, bc i keep my commissioners updated on my progress and maintain a quick turnaround for all the art) However, in the past i have received a request that i really wanted to do after i had taken a number of larger pieces...as a solution i told the client it would probably be a bit of a wait for their piece to be completed & gave them a chance to agree to the longer wait time, or decline and wait for another opening. Again, being available and communicating your needs and abilities is essential for keeping everyone happy.

-CHARGE A DECENT WAGE FOR YOURSELF this one is really difficult for a lot of people. but another huge reason i used to take so long to finish commissions is bc i was not charging enough for the work i was doing. i would get frustrated working on all my weekends for months over 25$ or something. If you are being paid correctly the work will be a lot easier to complete, bc you will feel grateful rather than like you are getting ripped off


i think these are the most important tips i can think of....i know freelancing is tough! but your art WILL suffer if you have a constant shadow of Work You Need To Do! if you dont have time for commissions: Dont Take Them.

the reason i never post anything is bc i have ADHD and waiting fifteen seconds between uploads is way too long, i get distracted and leave. but also i check here for new art posted by ppl i follow like multiple times a day? i always feel like "I NEED to post more" but it feels like so much responsibility.....................................

So like, ive been on FA for like 10 years. if you know my art u know im not really like squeamish about adult themes or nudity or anything like that.
