Commission information
General | Posted 5 years agoFor those that have been asking, I've created a guide on my commission options here:
https://www.furaffinity.net/commissions/toonfx/
This isn't necessarily comprehensive, but it's a good start as I work on actively soliciting new commission jobs. Please let me know if anything jumps out at you as being balderdash or clumsily typed.
Cheers!

Trying to learn how to use the Unity game engine.
General | Posted 5 years agoHey there folks, I wanted to ping the audience here and see if anyone knows their way around the Unity game engine. I want to try and expand my knowledge of the software so I can be better positioned to apply for future job opportunities and I find my ability to learn is comprehensively better if I'm able to interact directly with someone who can offer guidance. Specifically I'm looking to gain knowledge about implementing user interfaces and building the game assets to create compelling user experiences. Additionally I want to understand how to use particle generators in the software in order to dynamically create visual effects similar to what I can do through pre-rendering in Adobe After Effects.
Can anyone help me out with this or perhaps point me in the direction of someone who could? I'd be willing to compensate for the time involved.
Thank you!

Update
General | Posted 5 years agoI haven't been very active here lately, and I'm sorry for that. The events of my life over the past year along with the world suddenly going sideways this year has put me in a weird place where I've not been feeling like myself. I have my ups and downs but overall there's a feeling of aimless drifting that's really done a job on my sensibilities. Ordinarily I'd be able to put those thoughts aside as there would be some kind of activity to prepare for in the future, but since nobody is going anywhere anymore I can't even count on my doctor appointments being honored. Don't get me wrong, -I'm not losing myself, just finding it really difficult to make the kind of comprehensive productivity I feel is needed so I can improve my chances of getting out of this rut I've been in.
On a lark I decided to start using my Twitter account more, so if you want to take a look and follow you can point your browser here: https://twitter.com/Brian_Reynolds3 I don't know how much overlap there is between people who know my work here on FA and who will follow on Twitter, but I've been reposting older stuff to Twitter along with newer things, but it's my intention to continue using FA as my primary gallery since Twitter is absolutely NOT the best way to view or navigate art uploads. However if you want to read my thoughts about random things or see posts about various travels I do to conventions (whenever that happens again) please consider participating in my postings.
I really miss visiting with you all at conventions. I know I can keep drawing for myself and others at home, but there's an energy and joy I feel drawing directly for people at conventions that just isn't the same when I'm at home. I earnestly look forward to seeing everyone whenever the next show is able to happen.

iOS screen recording software?
General | Posted 6 years agoCan anyone recommend a software tool that would allow me to record video footage displayed on my Iphone? I’m trying to do frame by frame animation analysis of iOS games, but the best I can do is take screenshots and not video.

Conventions coming up
General | Posted 6 years agoLife continues. I actually had gotten a new job at the beginning of June which was a deep relief for me that has unfortunately ended all too soon. Production difficulties forced the company to move programmers onto two critical games and sidelined other projects I would have been involved with, potentially for months. I was only hired on a trial basis and they're going to choose not to keep me as there's little left for me to do which dumps me back into the job hunt once again. At least now I've relocated to a much less expensive place in Kentucky and am able to resume looking for work without as much of a financial drain. Wish me better luck this time.
As for the plans going forward, I'm pushing on with the various conventions in August and September which had previously been in doubt because of the new job. Hopefully these will be good and profitable as commissions may be a big thing for my future income.
First up in August is Megaplex (https://megaplexcon.org/) in Orlando which I'm happy to make a return trip to. Last year's convention was my first time back since 2007 and it was a really great experience which I'm looking forward to continuing. I'll also be sharing the table with Scotty Arsenault who'll be bringing his own brand of entertainment with him so we'll see what sort of fun art we can put out.
At the end of Megaplex I'll be driving out to the Orlando airport and immediately flying to Berlin, Germany for my first ever visit to Eurofurence (https://www.eurofurence.org/EF25/) and, in fact, my first time in Europe altogether. I'm pretty elated to be doing this as I've been wanting to visit Europe for a long, long time and just could never find both the time and the money to attend. Something would always come up to make it difficult, and it almost happened again after getting laid off in February after I'd bought my plane ticket, registered for the convention, and reserved my room. But it WILL happen now and I'm going to make the most of it and hopefully have memories which will never be forgotten.
Finally over September 6-8 Tracy and I will be attending Furry Migration (https://www.furrymigration.org/) as the Guests of Honor (!) which will give us our first opportunity to visit Minneapolis and Minnesota. This will be quite a neat thing and will offer up an experience where we actually will be seeing more of the convention than just our typical behind-the-dealers-table look. Let me know if you think you'll be attending and I'll keep an eye out.
Looking out further things start becoming harder to make out. I have a table reserved for FA United (http://www.faunited.org/) and Tracy and I remain on staff for Midwest Furfest (https://www.furfest.org/) and we have every intention of going, but I have to take a wait-and-see attitude about going because I have to hold out hope that I might find a new job before then and if I do I have to keep within their time-off approvals.
Still though, the fact that I can make it for the first three conventions makes me happy.

Quick note: Anthrocon
General | Posted 6 years agoThings have been absurdly busy and I’ve had very little time to talk and post here, so real quick: I’m at Anthrocon again at table J16 so please stop by and say hello. I can bend your ear with how crazy 2019 has been for me.
Tracy's Patreon
General | Posted 6 years agoHey folks, I wanted to take a moment to plug
Calicougar's patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/TCReynolds
Tracy (my wife) has been running her Patreon showing off a number of cool things, early access images and advance notice of projects she's doing and planning to stream. It also works as a tip jar if you're so inclined (I think she's awesome by the way. :D)
Check it out if you'd like and bookmark it if you think it's worthy.
Cheers, y'all.

Life gets complicated.
General | Posted 6 years agoI originally started typing out this journal about three weeks ago but ended up sleeping on it before posting. Probably for the best because I was just too overwhelmed with the chaos I was dealing with. I still need to write something however because I've got people I need to stay in touch with and commissions I'm obligated to complete, and for those who know what I've been going through I want to give an update to say that I'm feeling much better now.
At the end of February I was laid off. No warning at all, no anticipation, no preparation. In fact I'd gotten a tremendous amount of compliments and reassurances that things were going great and that my work was recognized, appreciated, and made a difference to the company's customer impact. I'd even just received the quarterly bonus check the previous week which paid out higher than usual. Life was going GREAT.
The layoff completely turned my world upside down and for the first three weeks of March I encountered a seemingly continuous series of setbacks as I dealt with the realization of all the plans that had been thrown into disarray, the obstacles I was going to face in finding new employment, and the setbacks of finding out the limitations I was under as a result of the contract I'd signed with my now former employer. Depression and anxiety was extremely high. Things started to get a little better as I began making progress in my job search with the wonderful help of
BlueCanary who assisted in updating and reformatting my resume and professional site.
CaliCougar has been my rock throughout working to keep me centered, focused, and encouraged. I've also had the blessedly wonderful experience of hearing from friends and family far and wide who've expressed their support and faith in me, and man let me tell you how important it is to reach out to those folks you care about and let them know you're thinking of them and willing to share and listen. I simply cannot express my gratitude properly for the help and support I received.
As it stands right now I'm feeling just about back to my normal self, albeit with an incredible amount of pressure to pull off the magic trick of finding the next job to keep myself and the family afloat. I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable job hunting, but I do feel like I have a lot of experience and skill to offer and the capability to expand my range to achieve what I haven't previously done before. I have several applications out there now and will be working on more in the future along with taking the time to properly build up my portfolio and demo reel to show what I can do. The immediate deadline is June 30th as that's when the current rental agreement expires and we have to move out.... to where though I don't know. If all goes well I'll have an offer made before then and we'll relocate promptly, but if not we'll find a cheap rental close to my family so that we'll have some extra assistance taking care of my daughter if we end up having to work multiple odd jobs to make ends meet.
The matter of odd jobs is one of the things that is probably most relevant to why I'm posting here. I have no clue what to expect from the future. While I feel like I have a lot going for me in terms of what I can offer to future employers I can't predict what opportunities are going to be out there. I've been giving a lot of consideration to what sort of income I could make by going into commissions full-time. Up to this point I've done lots of commissions but mainly as a source of enjoyment rather than financial income and the uncertainty of how much work I could a) be offered and b) deliver gives me pause. I've been so very happy to do work for people in the past, but to make it a full-time operation.... that's a big leap of faith with a lot riding on the results. For the immediate future I have several pressing obligations to complete before I can jump into the commission realm with both feet (and I offer my sincere apologies to the people who've been waiting for me on existing commissions).
Regarding the future, well, life is completely unpredictable right now. I was really looking forward to make a post about how Tracy and I were selected to be Guests of Honor at Furry Migration, and that I'll be making my first appearance at Eurofurence (first trip to Europe for me ever) and how I'll be making my annual appearance at Anthrocon along with Midwest Furfest, and that I'll also be making a return trip to Megaplex too. I still have every intention of doing those too, but the future is so fluid that I don't know what to expect anymore. Furry Weekend Atlanta is coming up soon and I should definitely be able to do that, but afterwards.... well, I have to bow to reality however it takes shape.
For now though, I have a big task in front of me to really develop some kickass new material for my professional job hunt presentations and to that end I've got a goal in mind to finally get some practice in on learning some more painterly techniques with my illustrative renderings. I've relied almost exclusively over the years in my line drawing skills with limited hilight and shadow cartoon treatments and I really need to step things up to a new level if I'm going to broaden my reach for potential job openings. This is a great example of the kind of rendering I want to get a better grip on: https://mir-s3-cdn-cf.behance.net/p.....272a99e01b.png so if anyone out there reading this can point me in the direction of some good video tutorials I can review, or heck, if you're good at this type of rendering and would be willing to talk me through your own approach to the task I'd be supremely grateful to listen and learn.
I suppose that's about it for now. I want to thank everyone who's been interested in my work for sharing your enjoyment and comments over the years, -it's the feedback and support I get from you guys that keeps my spirits up when I tend to get dark depressing thoughts over what potential I have to make good on the future opportunities out there.
Cheers, y'all.

MFF 2018
General | Posted 7 years agoTracy and I are leaving tomorrow morning for the big show and will be looking out for you guys via our table at Artist's Alley, -S2. I look forward to the opportunity to draw for folks again and hopefully provide some enjoyable entertainment for everyone and maybe some worthwhile conversation too. We'll have prints, art cards, a whole stack of original art sketches, and some stickers as well, and we're always down for making new art badges and commissions... yeah! Look for us to be around pretty much the whole time at AA and please don't be shy!
Seeya!
Edit: I forgot to mention that Scotty A will be attending as well, -his first time at the show so be nice and make him feel welcome! He does superb cartoons and works WAY fast to boot! Also be on the lookout for my BFF Jasper / Erik at table #13 in the Artist Marketplace (same room as AA)! Jasper will be selling badges and showing some wonderful character costume bandanna accessories along with taking custom art requests. They deserve all your attention!

General | Posted 7 years agoI want to see a bar scene. Specifically I want to see a bar scene where there’s an in-joke song playing in the background that’s a cover of “He’s a Tramp” by Peggy Lee from Lady and the Tramp.
Yeah, that would be greaaaat. :)

FA United saturday
General | Posted 7 years agoYo. I’ll be attending FA United this Saturday for the first time. It’s a two hour drive for me and I’m going to give it a quick look-see to gauge whether this is something I’d want to do as a full dealer in the future.
Anyone else going?
Anyone who is going want to buy a conbadge commission to be delivered on Saturday?

Megaplex convention - over and out!
General | Posted 7 years agoDepending on your age and familiarity with me you might already know that I was guest of honor at Megaplex 5 back in 2006. I was briefly able to attend Megaplex 6 in Jacksonville, FL as I was traveling through the area because of a vacation cruise to the Bahamas I was taking with
Calicougar before the birth of our daughter. For one reason or another however I haven't been back to Megaplex since then, and I've always felt disappointed by that. As much as I enjoyed the convention I had to make a strategic decision about how much time off I could take each year to work conventions along with balancing out the expense of attending with whatever sales I could expect to make, and in the long run Megaplex had a lower priority than the other conventions I was already committed to. I decided that I really wanted to go back this year however and chose to make it happen whether I made a profit or not, and boy am I glad I did.
Megaplex has gotten a lot larger than it was 11 years ago, but one thing hasn't changed: the people involved and the personality "flavor" is still the same. Each convention I attend has its own staff, policies, local attractions, and the like, but Megaplex just feels more personal. I'm biased of course, -I have several friends involved in the staff and history of the convention, but I saw plenty of evidence that went beyond just myself where the staff took an above average interest in the satisfaction of the dealers and attendees. This made the convention feel more like an extended family gathering rather than a business event of like-minded enthusiasts. I like that.
I also liked that the convention has grown in attendance and I had a lot more work to do than I remembered even when I was the guest of honor. Sales were strong enough that I am definitely happy with the results and will certainly consider making a return before another 11 years elapse. I regret that I was busy enough that my usual convention behavior of developing roots at my dealer's table and failing to spend much time seeing the panels, the different activity rooms, or even visiting with other dealers, but I remain grateful for the opportunity to see and visit with all the people who took the time and interest to see me at my table as they perused the Dealers Room.
One of the things that I noticed perhaps at Megaplex more than other conventions was the greater amount of people who were either regional or first-time convention attendees altogether. I've been to so many conventions over the years that there are certain people I seem to see everywhere I go, and events like Megaplex are a good reminder that despite my range of travels there are still quite a lot of people who only ever get to attend a "local" convention or even just one convention a year, and it's always a tremendous thrill to meet someone who is discovering my work for the first time. In all honesty one of the big reasons why I attend conventions in the first place is because of the happiness I feel when people react well to the work that I provide them. The money is nice (and supremely important in the years when I was between jobs) but there's a serious amount of *joy* I feel when someone likes my work enough to pay money for it in the first place and then express genuine delight upon the receipt of the finished effort.
This year I got to meet several new people who either bought something for me for the first time or just met me for the first time and shared stories and interests. I'm normally a fairly quiet person and I've come to realize how valuable it is for me to attend a convention where I have my work on display in such a way that people are encouraged to come up and talk to me specifically about the things I love. I could never be the same outgoing personality I am behind my dealer's table if I were to meet you all in the context of a big public gathering like a music concert, a school PTA meeting, or just walking along the sidewalks in a crowded downtown. But when I sit and interact with people who come up to me to express an appreciation for art and cartooning then it just makes my day. Seriously.
I was able to do several commissions this year which I'll be posting eventually once I can process the scans, but I'm most impressed with the amount of con badges that I was able to do. I don't think I've ever done so many in one convention before and that was a really nice thing. I should mention here as I did to people at the show that I remain available (if less efficiently productive) to do commissions and badge art outside of conventions so if anyone likes the badge art I upload then I'd be glad to do more like it for you even if I'm not attending the convention you plan on attending.
I only have two complaints about the convention: Orlando in August is *brutally* hot and humid, and the parking spaces available for the hotel was disappointingly limited. I honestly can't believe someone hasn't died yet while wearing their costumes in the Florida heat... I might have suffered heat stroke if I'd stayed out too long just in my regular clothes and I spent as much time as possible indoors with the air conditioning cranked to maximum. The parking situation is just what you have to live with, but because I had a lot of heavy, bulky items to carry to my room (and there was no elevator for that part of the hotel) I for damned sure wasn't going to give up my close parking spot on Thursday morning so that I could leave the hotel for dinner elsewhere. As such I never ventured further than the hotel restaurants or the Village Inn across the street even though the hotel was located along International Drive which had numerous desirable restaurants I would have loved to stop at. C'est la vie.
I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do about Megaplex 2019. I have big plans to finally visit Europe next year and my hope is to make Eurofurence the start of that journey. With Anthrocon in July and Eurofurence at the end of August I technically could still make Megaplex at the beginning of August, but that starts getting into questions of how much vacation time would I be using up and whether I might be able to be out of the office that much in a short time frame. I don't know the answer to that, but I'll be looking at it closely to see if I can't make it all happen. More to come on that front!
As always, my sincere thanks to everyone who takes the time to say hello or express an interest in the work I do at these conventions. It's truly a pleasure for me to attend and interact with everyone and I look forward to the next opportunity.
See you guys again!

Megaplex Orlando - this weekend
General | Posted 7 years agoWho's going? I am!
Who else?
Who else?
As always Anthrocon was good
General | Posted 7 years agoOne interesting conversation from this years convention started out where the fellow was asking me about whether I'd been going to conventions for a long time, and commenting this was his sixth time at AC. I said yes, indeed I had been going to Anthrocon going back to the second show in 1998 when it was still called Albany Anthrocon. He heard that and laughed, saying that he'd actually been born in 1998. This was immediately followed by me re-enacting the end scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where the villain meets his demise.
I'm not... old... I don't feel old. Maybe a little.
I was also thinking about how I remember going out with Tracy to the grassy lawn with bushes outside the Adams Mark hotel at Anthrocon circa 2002 to admire the fireflies and reflected on how my convention experiences have changed over the years. Back then I attended conventions as something of an equal split of working / vacation, and I would allow myself the time to kick back and do fun things like that and then go to sleep at a semi-decent time period like midnight or 2am, perhaps. I don't know when things changed for me but the weight eventually shifted heavily onto the "working" side and not really much of the "vacation" (although I still get a charge out of attending). Maybe it's because I have more work to do these days or because I spend more time on it (getting nicer results hopefully) but it's now a routine thing for me to stay up until 3 or 4am working and having very little time to go to room parties with friends or even explore the dealers room or art show. I know I *could* still do all that if I wanted to, but I allow myself to be trapped by self imposed obligations. I keep taking on request after request and then doing my best to deliver something quality within the weekend timeframe, and yeah, I lose sleep, but I feel really humbled by the interest and pleased with my output which in truth is the most productive time for me out of the whole year.
So to everyone who stops by my table and chats for awhile, to those who buy things from me, and to those who commission something new from me, -THANK YOU! You all are the reason why I attend and the friends I've made over the years who I'm able to hang out with even for a little while keep me constantly motivated to the next show on the horizon despite the constant callouses and sleep deprivation I'll subject myself to in the process.
The drive out to Pittsburgh this year was pretty uneventful save for a couple minutes of white-out conditions during a heavy rainfall. That was hairy. Fortunately everyone on the road in front and behind me slowed down severely and put their hazards on so I was less concerned about getting slammed by an unaware driver.
As mentioned in a previous journal, barely a week before AC I got notice of an available Dealers table and that proved to be an excellent thing as I was able to bring my whole spread of work with me and afforded me the option of selling some prints and stickers I might not have had room to do if I'd been limited to an artist alley table. Speaking of that however, did anyone get a proper assessment of how busy Artist Alley was? I had been getting conflicting commentary earlier when it looked like that was my only option to sell this year concerning how likely it was that someone could feasibly obtain an AA table for all three days. In the past there always seemed to be some empty tables making it plausible that if you wanted a table you could get one, but I'm wondering what the reality was this year.
This year I brought with me another Attention Getting Device... or two, really. I now have both Nick and Judy from the Revoltech line of articulated toy figures and they got a LOT of attention. Some people asked if I'd sculpted them myself, others asked if I was selling them. To everyone who expressed interest I'd encouraged them to go out and buy the figures NOW if they saw them because it had appeared to me that all regular outlets which had them originally available for pre-order were sold out with notices that they might not be restocked. The figures are still out there but largely in the realm of second-hand re-sellers on Amazon or Ebay with prices about $30 to $50 higher than what I'd paid originally. Since coming back home however I've looked this up online and discovered that Nick is still available for purchase and Judy will be getting restocked around September. If you have an interest in these two then follow these links and get your orders in now:

http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/Produ.....nDetails/66409
...you can also find them for sale elsewhere but you'll need to google that yourself...
Beyond that... I'm not sure what else to include in this journal. I had a great time visiting with everyone no matter how brief and if there's one regret I had about the convention it's there aren't enough hours in the day for me to see everybody I want to and still accomplish the work load I want to. To those I didn't speak to this year I hope that you had an excellent and profitable time, and to those I did thank you very much for keeping me company and busy throughout the weekend!
I'll be headed to Orlando to attend the Megaplex convention at the beginning of August and I look forward to seeing many of you there as well. Cheers!

Anthrocon dealers table D 18
General | Posted 7 years agoThere ya go, come by and say hello! I’ll be sitting there each day of the convention and love the conversation!
Anthrocon next weekend
General | Posted 7 years agoOn Friday I was thrilled to discover that due to a cancellation(s) I have been bumped up on the wait list far enough that I'm actually going to get a Dealers Table at Anthrocon next weekend! Whoah! I had been expecting to just sit at Artist's Alley and cross my fingers that I'd be able to get a table very day but luck is with me and now I'll be able to set up properly and be findable in the same location day after day. Sweet! I don't know what table I'll actually be placed at just yet, but when I do I'll give an update here.
In the meantime I'm working to get a number of art obligations completed before the convention. To that end I should be doing some art streaming tonight at https://picarto.tv/ToonFoxTV if you'd like to go there and check it out. If you don't already have an account on Picarto you can sign up and then follow my account and you'll get automatic emails notices whenever I do a stream (I don't always announce it here).
Cheers y'all! I'll see the lot of you in Pittsburgh!

My knowledge about Spiderman on the whole is fairly limited; I've seen the movies and have a tiny bit of knowledge about the comics, and probably more memory of "Spiderman and his Amazing Friends" (look it up, -Firestar and Iceman were fun), so the whole splintering of the singular identity of Spiderman is a new concept to me. It could have been weird and chaotic, but I'm seriously enjoying the family dynamic of Miles Morales and if that element is as strong of an emotional anchor for the story as this trailer suggests then I'm ALL onboard for this. And DAMN if I'm not bowled over by the artistic boldness of the execution here! I get a certain odd reaction to the "glitchiness" from the various comic-book artifacts that pop up, but the quick flashes where the whole scene becomes a comic book panel are a delight. This movie just jumped up to one of my most anticipated flicks.

BLFC Bazaar
General | Posted 7 years agoI got a confirmation email yesterday informing me that I'll be able to make use of one of the Bazaar / Artist Alley tables at BLFC for the course of the convention, so I'm pretty stoked. I was going to be at the convention no matter what but now I know for certain that I'll be present and visible in one place for the duration instead of potentially wandering hither and yon during the proceedings. As a result of this news I'll definitely be bringing my art supplies with me and will be able to do all of my normal convention sales. If you'd read my previous journal post I'm still able to accept commissions in advance of the show but it's no longer quite certain of how much I can accomplish, -just let me know if you'd like to try and we'll make sure that I can get something to you at the convention. :D
Feelin' good!

BLFC delivery commissions
General | Posted 7 years agoHey folks, if you're interested in getting a commission delivered at BLFC please send me a note. I have some time this weekend that I should be able to get some work done and anything that I do will be broadcast via Picarto (https://picarto.tv/ToonFoxTV) in order to maximize the amount of time I have available. I'll give preference to con badges but I can also do pencil sketches and probably even inked pictures this weekend. Depending on the amount of time I have after priority is given to those I might be able to also squeeze in some color pictures (marker coloring).
Con badges are $35 and here's some examples:

From the looks of things and the lack of communication I've been getting from the BLFC staff it's looking unlikely I'll be able to man a table and do any direct sales from the convention floor but I can certainly deliver things purchased in advance. Give me a heads up if you'd be interested!

Tracy’s kickstarter is nearing its conclusion

Hey folks, Tracy’s children’s book Kickstarter project “Hello, Officer Voof!” Is nearing completion and has less than $400 to go to be successful. If you could share this message with friends or consider pledging (further?) then by 9pm tonight it will go through and kazoos will be blown. We sincerely appreciate all the help and interest people have shown so far and want you all to know how much it’s meant to have had that support. We’ve got our fingers crossed and are biting our nails in anticipation.

Biggest Little Furcon is a go
General | Posted 7 years agoI got confirmation today that my business trip to Reno was approved and so I'll be leaving a couple days early so that I can attend BLFC. I've registered for the convention and applied to the artist alley / bazaar, but seeing as how they've supposedly already notified the applicants of their selection I don't expect to get in. I have even less expectation of getting a dealer's table since that page straight up says the room is full and I'd be put on a waiting list. This just means that I'll probably be attending as just a regular attendee and seeing what sort of things there are to see and do which I normally miss out on by sitting behind a table for the entirety. We'll see!
Since I definitely will be there however I can make plans to deliver on commissions and pre-con badge items however, so if you want to talk to me about that send me a message and we'll work out a plan.
Looking forward to this... I had a great time exploring the casinos during my trip to Reno last year and I expect to do a whole lot of that again this year. If time permits I might even try making my way up to Lake Tahoe!
