Giardia, the happy intestinal parasite 8D
Posted 14 years agoI am currently taking Parasitology, and right now we're investigating the exciting world of intestinal bugs. You can imagine my surprise/elation when my teacher put up a picture of what Giardia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giardia_lamblia) looks like:
Actual under-microscope picture: http://www.pathobio.sdu.edu.cn/sdjs.....oph%281%29.jpg
The textbook's diagram of the two major reproductive stages: http://cal.vet.upenn.edu/projects/d.....%20drawing.jpg
The two "eyes" are nuclei, and the smiling "mouth" is the median body, a supportive structure.
The man who first observed the happiest parasite ever was Leeuwenhoek, the guy who honed the abilities of microscopes. Once he'd perfected microscopy so that he could observe minute details of life, what do you think he immediately decided to look at? His own poop, of course. And when he cast his eyes for the first time upon his own excrement, Giardia was smiling up at him. 8D
Seriously, science is the best thing ever. You can't make this shit up. XD

The lazy man's guide to gender and sexuality
Posted 15 years ago(Re-post due to FA's comment/journal issues.)
Too many words? This should help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQlIhraqL7o
It seems that a lot of people are un- and/or misinformed to the point of making hilariously untrue statements about various sexualities and/or gender identities. So, I have made this handy list for those of you who may be confused, or too lazy to read more than a sentence about something that does not have to do with you.
I'm not going to define hetero-, homo-, or bisexuality. If you don't know, roll the rock under which you are living out of your way and get some sunshine.
1. Pansexuality: Attraction (sexual, romantic, etc) toward people regardless of their gender identity or biological sex. NOT an attraction toward inanimate objects, non-human animals, or other comical-yet-inaccurate things.
2. Transsexuality: When a person's biological gender does not equal his or her mental gender. A biological male who thinks/feels she is mentally a woman = MtF (Male-to-Female). A biological female who thinks/feels he is mentally a man = FtM (Female-to-Male).
Does NOT require surgery, hormones, or any other alteration.
See also Transgender.
3. Asexuality: The lack of desire for sexual activity with another person. Not to be confused with any social group, such as goths, punks, etc or state of mind, such as low self-esteem or hatred for humanity. A sexuality like any other.
4. Transvestite: A person who dresses like the opposite gender. See Cross-dressing. Not associated with any sexuality. Does not always indicate transsexualism.
5. Intersex: A state in which a person is neither male or female, and often possesses physical traits of both genders. See also Androgyny.
I think that is where I will end for now. If anyone wants definitions for more terms, ask. I welcome questions and comments. Gender and sexuality are two extremely fluid worlds, and can never truly be defined. This list is mostly for those people out there who seem to have gotten definitions from the Urban Dictionary, or some other horrifically inaccurate and potentially offensive source.

Grammar Nazis, and etc
Posted 15 years agohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7E-.....layer_embedded
I know this was posted by Dragoneer, but I liked it a lot so here you go again. I used to be a grammar nazi, a real asshole who would correct everyone and everything whenever possible. I did this to express how superior I was to the world around me. I then grew up and realized that no one is superior, and that words are not meant to be corralled by grammar or punctuation or even clarity.
I love writing, but not because I love telling someone else what something looks like, or how a situation went, or whatever. I love writing because I love words, I love punctuation, I love what you can do with a language to make it beautiful and interesting. I love reading what I write, because I write it exactly how I want it to sound, both in my head and out loud. I love melding words, hyphenating whenever possible, and above all I love inappropriate use of commas and semi-colons. Writing is not about being "right" according to the MLA or the person sitting next to you, or even to your writing professor or English teacher. Writing is about expressing what you want to express, how you want to express it. Writing should make you happy, and you should go back to your works years later and smile at them.
So guys, if you want to write, write. Don't listen to people trying to increase their own low, low self-esteem by insulting you. Most of the time they're wrong anyway, but then again, what is wrong with art? Writing is art. Nothing could be wrong with art. Art is self-expression, and in itself perfect in its very existence. Too many people get bogged down worrying about perfection, when they have it right in front of them. Have fun expressing yourself, and you have made the perfect piece of art every single time.
5 Minute Spay - Graphic, but Interesting
Posted 15 years agoI was pondering feral cat colonies, as a friend of mine just moved into an apartment which houses a small, young colony next to it, and during my research I discovered this video. This spay technique (spay = alter a female; neuter = alter a male) was developed for use with feral colonies, and is now spreading into private practices. As the doctor says, the less time under anesthesia, the better, and this also allows one veterinarian to spay huge numbers of animals in a day at relatively low cost, which is why free or low-cost spay and neuter clinics can exist and assist the public. So! Watch it, if you want; it's very interesting.
Graphic Content! This is a video of an actual spay procedure, with blood and guts and etc.

Neat, ne? I think so.

My Cat Plays Fetch
Posted 15 years agoSo, I found a cat, in case you didn't notice by the picture of a cat in my scraps. Her name is Exxie, and she plays fetch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPz5-l8KuaU
She is completely obsessed with bottle caps. When I take the cap off of a bottle to drink out of it she gives me this look like "You're not going to keep using that, right?" She has about 6 on the floor right now, but clearly that is too few. XD Anyway, I enjoy her, she is quirky, and I will hopefully have a longer movie soon of her playing a couple of rounds of fetch, because it's just so darn cute. n_n

When to use thumbnails~
Posted 15 years agoDoes your picture contain a hard fetish, i.e. something other than just plain sex? If so, thumbail it. If not, don't. It's so simple. 8D
This is dedicated to the artists I unwatch due to them either A) Thumbnailing every piece they do, therefore forcing me to waste time on art I wouldn't have bothered with if I'd seen the whole thing in my submissions list, and B) NOT thumbnailing things that I do not like to see, even though I may love and/or enjoy the majority of their art. I like you, don't do this to me. D8 <3

Every Banner Forever
Posted 15 years agoOmg you guyz, it's a fetish. And terrible, and no one should ever look at it ever, whatever it is, forever.
Phew. Now that that's taken care of, maybe the fandom can stfu about every banner to ever come onto this website and do something slightly more productive. Or not. I don't care, as long as it's not banner-related.

Hey Artists, wtf
Posted 15 years agoI try to choose my artists wisely when I want a commission, but somehow I haven't found a fool-proof method for predicting whether or not an artist will maintain proper communication. This is my only real pet peeve with artists. Take your time, take much more time than you said you would, put off everything, but good lord, TELL me you're going to do this. Don't make me learn through a journal or second-hand knowledge, especially if you're posting other commissions and not mine. If you owe me something and I note you about it, note me back. Don't read the note, ignore it, and hope I don't realize that I can see that you ignored me via my outbox on FA. Don't tell me you're going to finish soon, mail something soon, get everything done soon, and then don't. If you have a problem, TELL ME. I won't care, I promise. XD People seem to think it's better to not tell a commissioner about issues and slowdowns and hope they'll cope with no knowledge, than to tell them "Hey, it's going to be a little while, but I am working as hard and as fast as I can, thank you for your patience." Whyyyyy? Seriously, nobody likes this, but artists do it all the time. If you don't have the money to refund me but can't do my art, tell me. Don't lie to me, ignore me, or treat me like I don't matter because I won't legally pursue you over $15 I sent you a year ago. I will remember, and I will tell anyone who will listen not to give you business, and soon that $15 will cost you $500 in lost commissions. Don't do it. D8< Word of mouth is powerful, much more powerful than artists seem to realize. You're running a business, try to pretend to be mature enough to keep it going.

The one gripe I have with FA...
Posted 15 years ago...is that you can't choose not to see artists' journals. Yes, you can mass delete them, but most of the time I will read a journal if it has a weird enough title, just so I don't miss out on a commission deal or some piece of interesting information. But, when an artist writes one too many emo/angry/dumb journals, I unwatch them. Yeah, I'm losing their art from my life, but good lord these people just won't stop whining to the internet. D8
So, please FA, let me choose not to see dumb emo whiney journals. Before a GUI update, before a note system revamp, allow us to avoid as much drama as we possibly can in this drama-filled fandom. Thank youuu~

Fursuit progress (it's pretty ugly! 8D)
Posted 15 years agoI just got done with my finals (and got all the grades I wanted this semester, yay x3 ) so I have FINALLY had time to work on my suit. I'm awful at everything artful, so I thought it would be amusing for those of you with actual skills to see this monstrosity of an attempted foam carving. I love it. 8D

This is my first suit and first attempt at anything 3d or vaguely artistic beside my pixels and doodles, so I know it's awful. XD I am ok with it. Any critique or encouragement would be lovely. 8D

If I had a dollar...
Posted 15 years ago...for every "I'm sorry to my commissioners for being slow with commissions right now" journal I've seen in the last week, I could probably buy Walmart. If you have any further questions, feel free to drop me a note. I love educating people about transsexuals, and unless you are a complete douche/hater I'm not going to be offended. 8D

Posted 15 years agoI got the apartment I wanted in an awesome part of town. I'm magically doing really well in math this semester. My cat's blood sugar is controlled and he's fine now. This summer is full of awesome things happening. LIFE IS AWESOME.

In other news, fursuit construction is going well! I thought I didn't know how to sew before, but now...whew. I suck. But I'm taking every precaution possible to keep myself from fucking up the fur, so I think by the time I finally get to it, it'll be fine. XD And spring break is next week, so I'm going to buy a shitton of cheap foam and make like 5 head prototypes before I fur one. I realize I am no artist, so I'm attempting to suck as little as possible when it comes to expensive materials. Here's hoping I'm done by AC! ~crosses his hooves~

Posted 15 years ago"You do not need inspiration. I am constantly amazed by the notion that inspiration is somehow critical to the creative process. If I had to rely on inspiration, my unmet deadlines would settle on the house like a flock of crows, clutching my rent and my car payment in their hoary claws. When I'm writing Dragonbreath, I sit down and write a thousand words a day, three or four days a week, until there is no more book left. Some days, sure, I get in the groove and do two or three thousand words in a day--but most of the work gets done by writing a thousand words a day, over and over again, until it's done."
