Self improvement/reflection
General | Posted 16 years agoRighty!
Before University starts back up next week (Final year, Woo!), I'm just putting a few things down in writing, publicly, so that I have a better chance of sticking to my own word! X3 I'm basically just putting it up here so it'll remind me each time I drop by.
This year I really need to focus on my Uni work, and it really needs to be put before anything else.
I spent HOURS on my assignments last year (anyone who talks to me online will have seen me panicking over the workload, or doing all nighters to finish assignments, a few times XD ), and worked harder than I ever have, but it obviously wasn't enough since I still failed two modules. Fortunately I managed to do well in the resit work over the summer and managed to pass them comfortably, though I still only managed an average grade overall.
My final mark in my first year was 63%, and in the second year it was only 54% (Would have been in mid 60s if I didn't fail two modules), which isn't bad, but I need to do a lot better.
At the moment I'm currently sorting out my application for Medicine, which is the only thing I've wanted to do since I was like, 8 years old (literally!). To even stand a chance at getting in, I need to get a mark of at least 70% for my final year, preferably over 80% (And even that doesn't guarantee a place)!
Unfortunately, if I want to stand a chance of getting this, I'm probably gonna have to cut down on my time online, a lot, when assignments get going.
I usually make the mistake of working in front of my computer (mainly because I need to read medical journals n' stuff online), meaning I'll pretty much always end up on some form of messenger whilst I'm working. I always say it doesn't distract me much, but since it manages to make assignments take a lot longer than they should, I guess it does.
I think I'm gonna have to make a new msn account purely for people on my course, since it's a good way of getting through assignments or group work together. However, I'll still be back on my usual account whenever I have the time, since I definitely don't want to miss out on any of my friends online.
Last year I sacrificed a lot of my offline social life to work on university stuff instead.
This year I'm gonna have to sacrifice a lot of my online social life as well, as much as it pains me to say it. X_x
Hopefully I'll still manage to get online for a bit most days, probably after I'm done with assignment stuff for the night, or when I just need to chill. If the workload is anything like it was in my second year however, it's unlikely. :/
I'm feeling optimistic about my final year at least. =) All of my modules look pretty interesting (Especially Pathology, Neurology, and Medical Microbiology!), and it seems like I have a decent lineup of lecturers for a change, which is definitely a good sign!
Right now I want to get into it, I want to work hard, and I want to do well.
Now I just need to find out if I have the willpower to keep up this attitude.

General | Posted 16 years agoHopefully this year will go a little smoother than this past year has gone. I've never had so many ups and downs in the space of 12 months before!
I'm feeling pretty optimistic this time around though. :) Other than a few money worries, things seem to be looking up at the moment!
Gotta head to bed now though! It's 3:00am here and I have a lil party to prepare for tomorrow. ;D
See ya later!

Updatey!
General | Posted 16 years agoEven though it's a couple of months ago now, thanks a lot to all the well wishers before/after my surgery! :) Fortunately it all went really well, and amazingly, I had absolutely no pain at all throughout the entire recovery! O_o I expected to be stuck in bed and immobile for weeks after the surgery, but I was actually up and about literally 2-3 hours after the operation. XD
I still ended up spending about 6 weeks staying at my parent's place though, just in case there were any complications later down the line, but it was all fine.
Ugh... It looked -gross- though. I ended up with a large, open hole in my lower back which was easily big enough to fit a ping pong ball into. X3 Though now, there's just a nice big scar instead, which isn't quite as disgusting. :P
After staying at my parent's place for a while, I finally moved into my new place, along with one of my previous house mates and his girlfriend. This place is soooo much better than our old house, and a lot cheaper, so I'm loving it here so far! I've got the attic room to myself, which is the largest room, and it has an awesome view over the city, so I'm definitely happy about that. <3
The only downsides at the moment are that my housemates are working full time at the moment, and aren't back until about 5:30pm each day, then they usually go to bed insanely early most nights, and since they're a couple, I like to give them plenty of time to themselves. The result of this is that I'm on my own for about 22 hours a day most days, which does get preeeeetty dull.
I'm also -completely- broke at the moment, to the point where I'm having to borrow rent money from my housemate, and from my parents, yet I can still barely afford food. I'm pretty much at the point where I daren't leave the house, in case I end up spending anything.
Once my student loan finally comes through later this month I should be alright, but until then, I'm beyond broke. X3 heh
In more recent news, I'm currently recovering from a 15+ mile long hike that I did on monday with a local fur. X3 It was good fun, if a little painful, but the views were definitely rewarding in places! :)
The fur I went with seemed to have a pretty different idea of hiking than I did, since he led me through quite a bit of terrain I wouldn't normally even think about trying to get through. XD We spent about 2 hours pushing our way through dense, neck high ferns and bracken, then spent ages climbing up an insanely steep, rocky, and preeeeetty tall hill (must have been about 80 degrees in places) where just one slip or stumble would have probably resulted in either death of horrible injury. X3 I was physically shaking by the time we got to the top. XD;;
I'm glad I did it, though if we went again, I'd definitely make sure we avoid those routes, since it was waaaay out of my comfort zone. XP
My legs are still achy and stiff afterwards, but it'll probably go away soon!
At the moment, I'm just lazing and enjoying the last of the summer break before Uni gets going again, with a bit of job hunting inbetween (Though that's pretty hopeless at the moment :P ). I'm kinda looking forward to getting back to Uni, though I'm sure i'll be complaining about the workload within the first week. XD
One more thing!
Birthday tomorrow!

Help out Casey! (Only takes seconds!)

"A few years ago I met a girl at my local Renaissance faire named Casey. I never got to know her very well, although she always seemed pretty cool, with hugs and smiles and cuteness for all. Several months ago she was diagnosed with bone cancer; she is currently undergoing chemotherapy, but will have to have her leg and part of her pelvis amputated. (Her sister, older by a few years, had leukemia when she was younger; fun, no?) Anyway . . . Weak-bodied, hairless, 19-year-old Casey entered a contest Victoria's Secret is having in which you submit a few pictures with a brief description of why you love your body. The prize is a trip to New York, a spa treatment, basically a break from life that she and her sister, who dropped everything to go help take care of her, quite deserve. The voting is on the website, and you can vote once per day. (Per IP address...) I tend to be extremely cynical about these kinds of contests, but she is currently in first place, after having been ousted from that position by a bunch of 4chan hackers. So there is a chance that this could actually happen.
So, if you have a spare 3 seconds, please vote for Casey. She deserves a little vacation from life."

1) Post these rules
2) Post 8 true things about yourself
3) At the end you must tag 8 people and post their icons
4) Go to their page and send them a message saying you tagged them
5) NO TAG-BACKS
1. 6 weeks ago I had a large, almost baseball-sized chunk of myself removed from my lower back, yet it's caused absolutely no pain whatsoever, and it's almost healed already! O_o
2. I reeeeeeally want to learn to use a bo staff.
3. Rock Band has become quite an addiction, particularly the drumming! It's almost taken over from my 10-year-long DDR addiction.
4. Although last year at Uni was -hell-, from start to finish, I'm actually looking forward to my third year! We have a module on Neuroscience, and it makes me feel smart just saying it, despite the fact that I still feel like I know nothing. XP
5. I wouldn't mind getting a fursuit sometime. I just have no idea where I'd keep it since none of my house mates/friends/family know about my furry side.
6. Other than some money and Uni worries, I'm really content with life at the moment. :)
7. Other than a few cocktails I discovered last week, I -hate- pretty much anything alcoholic. I have nothing against drinking, I just can't stand the taste! (And coke is cheaper, and nicer, so I just stick with that) ;D
8. The only language I've ever been interested in learning is Japanese, and I have no idea why!

Surgery went well!
General | Posted 16 years agoWell, I had my surgery at about 4:30pm yesterday afternoon and so far all has gone well! I've barely had any pain whatsoever, and I'm able to walk around, and even sit, pretty comfortably, which I didn't expect to be able to do for a couple of weeks yet!
the only pain i've had so far was after I first woke up (though that was only enough to be slightly uncomfortable), aaaand when I had to have the padding changed, since it was like ripping off a HUGE plaster. XD
Other than that, it's been pretty much pain free! Which is pretty amazing!
I'm still kinda expecting the pain to kick in later though, apparently they often use a long-term anaesthetic which can last 3-4 days, then the pain might come about after that.
I had my first packing change earlier today as well (the wound's pretty deep, and has to be packed so it can heal from the inside) which is meant to be the most painful part of the recovery period, but I felt nothing! Buuuuut, when I first met the doctor who changed the packing for me, I told her that It didn't hurt so far, and her response was "Ooooh... It will...", so yeah, that's not overly reassuring. XD
She did however, seem genuinely surprised that I wasn't squirming around in pain whilst she was changing the packing. I dunno whether or not that's a good thing. X3
Aah well, i'm just lazing for now and killing time until this thing heals!
If anyone wants to chat, hit me up! I've got plenty of time to meet new folks for now! :)

Surgery! D: New House! :D
General | Posted 16 years ago Wooo... Surgery on thursday X_x
Finally getting a stupid pilonidal cyst removed from just below my spine which i've had for about 1 1/2 years. I'm not worried about the procedure itself, but the aftercare and recovery period is gonna be preeeetty long and nasty. I've done plenty of research into it, and it definitely doesn't sound fun.
So far, pretty much all the men i've seen who've had this procedure say that it's the most horrible pain they've -ever- experienced, by a long shot (in comparison to removal of other cysts in different places, broken bones, and one guy said "I once melted my leg to the engine of a 3 wheeler and that tickled in comparison" ).
The women i've seen who've commented on the pain have pretty much unanimously claimed that it's more painful than childbirth, and lasts a lot longer.
Soooo yeah, I'm really not looking forward to that aspect of it. :/
The more positive things to come out of my research show that I might be more active than I thought throughout the recovery period, and I miiiight actually be back to DDRing within a couple of weeks (though sitting down for longer than 10 mins at a time will most likely be a no-no for a while longer than that).
I'm probably gonna be stuck in bed for quite a while, so I'll have my 360, my DS, my laptop and a few books at hand to keep my entertained during that time! I might actually do more than scratch the surface of a few games which I've had for ages, but barely managed to play yet. XP
In other, more exciting news! Moving on monday! :D
We're abandoning our old student house, which is falling apart and full of -ancient- furniture, then moving into another old lil student house. Buuuut this one's all newly decorated, with pretty much brand new furniture, and a niiiiiiice new kitchen! It's just generally a LOT nicer in every way, and a LOT cheaper! So huzzah!
Also kinda swapping housemates! Two of my current housemates are a couple, so they're getting their own place together soon, leaving me and my other housemate.
Soooo i'm moving in with him, and his girlfriend is joining us, which should be pretty awesome! They're definitely not the kinda couple to make me feel like a 3rd wheel, both of them are awesome company and a good laugh, and his girlfriend's determined to teach me how to cook, which can only be for the best. :)
I'm looking forward to moving, buuuut it means there's only 3 days between moving, and my surgery. X_x I'm gonna be staying at my parent's place until I recover from the surgery so I only have 3 days to enjoy the new house. Blah!
One more small problem is that I miiiight be without internet for the next 3 days, but i'll still be able to browse on my phone if that's the case. :P
Aaah well, that's all for now!
See ya later!

Eternal Reccurence (Attempted philosophy X3 )
General | Posted 17 years ago(Before I say anything here, just remember i'm no philosopher. XP Although it's a subject i've been wanting to read into for years, it's only very recently i've had chance/time to start reading anything even remotely philosophical, so I apologize if everything I write from here on is a load of rubbish XP )
Lately I've been reading the book "The Philosopher and The Wolf" (Buy it! Borrow it! Read it! It's awesome) and towards the end the author (Mark Rolands) pokes at a couple of topics which I've been pondering about lately, one of which being reincarnation.
Although he doesn't talk about reincarnation directly, he touches on Nietzsche's idea of 'eternal recurrence' and how once we die, we're destined to come back as ourselves and re-live the exact same life we've already led, down to the finest detail, over and over again, for eternity:
"The heaviest burden. What if a demon crept after you one day or night in your loneliest solitude and said to you: 'This life, as you live it now and have lived it, you will have to live again and again, times without number; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and sigh and all the unspeakably small and great in your life must return to you, and everything the same series and sequence - and in the same way this spider and this moonlight among the trees, and in the same way this moment and I myself. The eternal hourglass of existence will be turned again and again - and you with it, you dust of dust!' - Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who thus spoke? Or have you experienced a tremendous moment in which you would have answered him: 'You are a god and never did I hear anything more divine!' If this thought gained power over you it would, as you are now, transform and perhaps crush you; the question in all and everything: 'do you want this again and again, times without number?' would lie as the heaviest burden upon all your actions. Or how well disposed towards yourself and towards life would you have to become to have no greater desire than for this ultimate eternal sanction and seal?" (Quoted from the fourth book of 'The Gay Science').
Here, the idea is phrased more as a suggestion to evaluate your life, and consider whether the idea of eternal recurrence would either satisfy or horrify you, should it be real.
In The Philosopher and the Wolf, Rolands discusses the plausibility of eternal recurrence. Going on the assumption that time is infinite, and that there are a finite number of atoms/particles in the universe, he suggests that there will be points in time where every atom/particle will happen to pass through the exact same points they have passed through in the past, over and over again, since there is an infnite amount of time time for them to do so.
If this occurs, then it may be true that eternal recurrence could happen though how and when is purely a matter of chance.
It's kinda like if you have five different coloured balls in a bag and take them out randomly one by one, noting the order, before putting them all back in. If you repeat this over and over, there'll be times when you pull out the balls in the same sequence as a previous time. It's unlikely, but it can, and most likely will happen if enough time is spent repeating the test. Only in eternal recurrence, the balls are replaced by an uncountable number of particles, and not only order, but the positioning of each one will matter.
However, one thing Rolands didn't mention is that through this theory, it would not only be possible for a person to live the same life over and over again, but it would also be possible for them to live through every variation of that life, however minute or massive those variations are. For example, going back to the coloured balls, if you continued to repeat the task over and over for an infinite amount of time, it's almost certain that you'll take them out of the bag in every possible order at somepoint.
As a very broad, real-world example:
In one life, a man might take the same route home from work that he's taken for the past few years and lead his life well from then on. In a later, or 'recurred' life, he might decide to take a slightly different route home for a change, then continue to lead the same life as he had in the past life. Later on, in another 'recurred' life, that altered route home might change his life considerably compared to the past ones. However, in another 'recurred' life, he might decide to take that slightly different route home, and as a result get hit by a car and not make it home at all (A slightly morbid example, I know, but the best I could think of at 3:50am X3 ).
Although that's only a very basic example, any possible changes, however large or small, could occur at any point, in any life.
For this to happen however, it would also be necessary for everything that's happened in the past to happen over and over, exactly as it has before, for this guy to exist over and over again including the big bang, evolution and everything else.
Though if time is indeed infinite, and if the number of atoms/particles is unchanging throughout that time, there's plenty of time for it all to happen an infinite number of times, and in an incomprehensible number of ways!
I may end up rewriting all this, and revising it at a later point, once I manage to read more into the topic and have more of a background to go buy, but for now, my mind is frying and I need to get to bed. Seven hours of lectures await me in the morning, fun times! X3
If ya have any comments/questions/criticisms, I'd be happy to discuss it, it'll probably help with my own understanding as well!
I'm going to bed now though, so g'night!

I've already won a snowball fight and built a snowman. His name's Bob.

Ahoy! Anyone wanna try colouring my lineart?
General | Posted 17 years agoAllo!
If anyone feels like having a go at colouring Torque on this pic:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1596296
Feel free to note me, and i can send ya the .psd file of the line art!
(It's pretty big, at 1810x2132)
It's veeeeery rare that i get chance to draw, and even rarer that i get a chance to try colouring, so I've got no where near enough experience to attempt to colour this thing yet. X3
I was really hoping I'd get chance to practice and colour it after I'd finished the line art, but university caught up with me, so i barely got started on it before i had to give up.
Since it's been a few months now, and I've still made no progress on it, i thought I'd make it open for other people to give it a try! :)
Oh! One thing, he still needs stripes (I somehow managed to forget to add them X3) so i might at least get around to adding those sometime, or ya can add them yourself if you want to give it a go. Torque doesn't really have a defined stripe pattern yet, so ya can be creative.
The only condition is that you give me credit for the line art and character, but everything else (Clothing colours, setting, weapon colours, etc) Is up to you!
If yer interested, gimmie a note!

tommah666Moved!
General | Posted 17 years agoFinally moved out last month! Got a place with a few friends who i've known for years, and so far it's been pretty good living with em all!
I'm pretty much settled in here now, it's a very nice area, and within walking distance of the city center, which is handy!
To say it's a student household, it's surprisingly well organized, mainly because one of my house mates is good at keeping us in shape when it comes to tidying/cleaning, but it's probably for the best really. :P
The only downside to the move is that the previous tenants here messed up when canceling their internet, making it veeery awkward for us to get our own set up, leaving us without the internet for just over a month!
A month without the web is torture! Especially for a closeted fur like me who uses the internet as his furry outlet!
I've been surviving using msn on my phone for ages now, so it's sooooo nice being able to use a keyboard to reply to people again. :P
Sooo yeah, finally moved, 'tis good! Huzzah!
That's all for now, see ya later!
