New Reference Sheet Policy
General | Posted 9 years agoHi everyone!
New reference sheet policy: No
I'm sorry. I just can't justify the time I spend on them versus the money they make. While it's exciting to help someone develop a new character, I just don't have the time for it anymore. I take reference sheet commissions then end up spending a long time on them. I just do not think I'm good enough to get these done in a timely manner so I will no longer offer them.
In all honesty, I recommend going with a different artist for reference sheet. To get a decent one from me costs upwards of $300+ and where my skill shines I think is in shading and backgrounds, neither of which I can use in a reference sheet. I'm also restricted by not able to really put it in my portfolio nor sell it as a print. There is just little benefit to me in doing them.
Is this a selfish decision? Somewhat. But my main goal is to have every customer as happy with me as possible. Doing a reference sheet delays other commissions and may not end up with what the commissioner wanted.
I have some fellow artist fluffs that do amazing reference sheets in a timely manner and recommend you go to them first.

Once you have a solid reference sheet, feel free to commission me of a pinup or sexy picture of your character. You will be happy with the results!
I'm curious to hear what others think of this idea.
Thanks,

Commissions Open!
General | Posted 10 years agoBut only for 24 hours. From now until tomorrow you have a chance to submit one idea to me to draw. I will select based on complexity of image (shaded is more likely to be chosen than flats) and images that I think will look the best. So getting a background is more likely to nab you a slot.
MAIN CATCH: You MUST be willing to pay half of the value of the image to reserve your slot and you’ll only have one day from the day of acceptance. FurSquared, my first con as a dealer, is coming around the corner and I need some travel money =)
The usual no-nos are gore, babyfur, cub, scat/ws, and vore. While I mainly draw males I always like the chance to practice other types of anatomy such as trans, herm, and lady characters.
So get in your idea! I will be selecting only around five to be completed by March. Just because i don’t select you doesn’t mean you won’t be chosen later. I offer slots to previous applicants before opening publicly again.
Just fill out this form! https://form.jotform.com/52904647359162

Commission Prices Going Up for 2016
General | Posted 10 years agoHey everyone,
Now that it's a little ways into a new year, I figured it was time for some more updates!
Over the last half a year or so I've been slowly trudging back to being on top of my commission stack again, and I have to say that it seems to be going very well. I'm nearly completely caught up; last year at this time I had more than 30 commissions on my to-do list, and this year I am currently down to 5.
My other job is still going to be on hold for the foreseeable future and so I have been making a lot of changes to my commission structure to help me stick to things better in the long run. Unfortunately, this means that I have been struggling over the last months to bring in enough money through commissions to be able to pay for my bills and that has contributed a lot also to the long period of time that it has taken me to start getting back on-track.
I have debated with myself long and hard about this, and I don't think there's a good way for me to continue doing this unless I raise my prices. I know that it's going to be bad news to a lot of people, but unfortunately there is only one of me and I can't keep burning myself out cranking out piece after piece of art and always feeling extreme pressure to move on to the next as soon as possible. To that end I will be raising my prices this year.
It has been almost five years since I did a large price change, and in that time I know things have gotten backed up, and there has been a big learning curve for me to figure out the best way for me to work and how I can keep things going forward for myself as a furry artist. In all honesty, in the time that has past since then the average amount of time that I spend on a commission has increased considerably (along with, I hope, the quality of my work.) Unfortunately, due to the stresses of life, my bills have also more than quadrupled. My student loans are piling up and I have health insurance and a host of other problems to deal with on top of those.
I say this not to get sympathy but just to inform everyone as to why I'm making this decision. I realize that this will probably make my commissions less affordable for potential commissioners, and for that I am truly sorry. But I have crunched the numbers again and again and I can't cut down my monthly budget anymore... the bottom line is that if I'm going to be able to make this work, I need to charge more for my time.
I do hope that with the added income potential, however, that I would be able to do a few things much better. In general, it would be a huge relief for me to have some more breathing room for each commission, so I can really spend time with the commissioner and get them artwork that is great and not feel like I have to push through it as fast as possible so I can pay rent. I will also be partnering with InkedFur to offer a print of your commission that would be included in the price. In addition, I have not been able to afford to get to go to a convention since 2012, and I would very much like to have a little more freedom to make plans in advance and make sure that I can be more present for the fandom at large. And last but certainly not least, I would like to make enough on some commissions that I can actually devote at least enough time per week to really get into Deep Breaths and make it a reality instead of that project that I can't seem to find time to work on.
I hope that everyone will understand why I am making this decision. I still very much enjoy being able to do this artwork, and if I can make some changes to give me what I need as an artist to keep going for the long haul, then I need to make those changes.
Thanks so much for reading, and I hope to have more art for you all to enjoy soon!

Happy Halloween!
General | Posted 10 years agoA happy Halloween to everyone! I hope everyone had a good week and have some fun plans today.
My plan is to continue chugging away at commissions! It feels so good to get my queue down. I'm doing about five full pieces a week and should have my list clear by November! This means I may be opening up soon but not until EVERYONE is completed.
It's tough but I hate making you all wait.
Also my dakimakura design I did for the auction winner will be on InkedFur this weekend! They have it in stock and ready to ship they just have to make it available.
Thanks for all your support guys. It means a lot to me.

Commission Status
General | Posted 10 years agoI just wanted to apologize to everyone who have been waiting. I had a small backlog when I took the new commissions and have been doing sketches of the new commissions so I can wait for approval while I work on the backlog.
I am putting forth approximately 10-12 hours a day on solid art. I even still have more to upload to my accounts. Everyone will get their image by November (hopefully this month for most of them) and I won't open again until this is all clear.
I would do a Patreon but would feel guilty for asking for money for art I should be doing anyways. However, purchasing prints through inkedfur of my art help me a lot and you get some nice artwork. If you haven't checked out my gallery there yet it's https://inkedfur.com/creator/tsaiwolf. I have nearly 100 images available as prints up to 24 x 36 inches. I'm also going to start offering wall scrolls and dakimakuras through them too!
But before I work on anymore personal art, I need to catch up on these commissions.
Thanks for your patience everyone!

General | Posted 10 years agoThank you everyone for submitting for a commission. We had 15 entries and now I can only choose 5 of them. I apologize to the 10 I have to not pick. Keep in mind that just because you weren't picked now, you may be picked later!
Regardless if you submitted the form at 10 AM or midnight, you'll have a fair chance. =)

For Everyone That Has Commissioned Me/Prints/Weasyl
General | Posted 10 years agoA separate journal will be posted regarding commission/life stuff
Hi all!
As some of you may know, I joined inkedfur to handle my printing needs giving you professional prints of my work for as low as $4. They have a 24" industrial printer and use Kodak paper. The quality is just amazing.
https://inkedfur.com/creator/tsaiwolf
However, due to needing to focus on commissions for financial reasons, I have few recent personal works as I simply don't have the time for it due to commissions. So to help with this, I will be selling prints of commissions I have done for all future commissions unless a small fee is paid.
Not applicable to reference sheets, icons, badges, most flats, and anything older than a few years
My new Terms of Service: http://tsaiwolf.tumblr.com/tos
To those that have a finished commission through me already, please let me know if you do not want prints sold of it. You can either note me or email me at my new commissions email at tsaiwolf[at]inkedfur.com and link me to the image in question and state you do not want prints sold. It's perfectly okay.
In a week's time, I will start posting my backlog on InkedFur. I will not post your commission if I hear from you before then.
However, if you don't mind prints of your commission being sold AND want a print of it, InkedFur will give you $10 off the image if you order before the end of the year. If you want a coupon code for $10 off your commission, please email me at tsaiwolf@inkedfur.com. If your image isn't up yet, please give us time to put it on InkedFur and we'll get back to you.
The next time commissions open, we'll have a much more transparent way of getting your commission and viewing the statuses of them. Stay tuned for more info.
Also I have a Weasyl! http://weasyl.com/~tsaiwolf It's not fully updated yet but I'm working on it. You may also find some images at a higher resolution there than here. Of course I still have my InkBunny and SoFurry accounts too.
Thanks for reading!

Life... and some commission slots open
General | Posted 10 years agoHi everyone,
I know, again it's been some time since I updated. Life seems to be throwing me a lot of curve balls these days, so even though that doesn't really make up for it, I guess I have at least a bit of an excuse.
I recently received word from my family that my Dad has a fairly advanced stage of prostate cancer, so in all honesty I have been a little bit distracted from my work over the recent weeks. I had really just gotten back on track with my bills and work schedule and whatnot, so of course something else would come along to gum up the works.
Mainly I've gone through a bit of a hiccup, where it looked for a little while like I would have to drop stuff here in Cali and move back east to help out while my Dad went through surgery and radiation therapy. I was worried because it seems like their insurance is not great, so it seems like I was going to be trying to come up with some extra money each month to send back their way in addition to moving back home, so it caused a bit of a stir in my day-to-day. So sorry again if you are still waiting on an email response from me, as that sort of thing has not really been my priority over the last few weeks.
After some long conversations, it looks like at least until we learn more, I'm going to be staying here in Cali. It's a bit frustrating being so far away, but the honest truth of the matter is that it looks like even if I did go back home, I wouldn't really be able to do much except be closer. Partially I'm torn, because I would like to be closer, but that's a lot of scratch to come up with on the spot, especially since my daily work has been interrupted yet again.
I suppose that except for those sort of life things though, in general the artwork is going well, for which I am grateful. I haven't really been able to finish as many pieces as I normally would have since the last time I opened commissions, but I have been able to generally cut down my commission list by about 5 slots, which is pretty good for a couple months. So in short, I wanted to get more commissions finished before I opened more, but I've put it off too long already, and I need to open some more commissions to keep things afloat while I continue to try to get life in order.
So if you are interested, I now have commission slots open! Due to the nature of things yet again, I'm not going to open a set number, as I more need a certain amount in order to continue. But if you are interested, please send an email to tsaiwolfcommissions[at]gmail.com .
I have a bunch of art to upload again, so I will do that throughout the day while I am available to answer emails. Thanks again for sticking around and supporting a crazy artist while he keeps floundering in the waves of life. :/
Here is the current commission list:

I have a bunch of art to upload again, so I will do that throughout the day while I am available to answer emails. Thanks again for sticking around and supporting a crazy artist while he keeps floundering in the waves of life. :/
Here is the current commission list:

Some commission slots and I'm sorry for being hard-to-reach
General | Posted 10 years agoHello FA.
I know it's been some time since I've been around in a regular fashion, and for that I apologize. I can only really say that it's just been the continuation of an incredibly difficult year for me, and there have been a lot of complications that have cropped up that I sincerely hope not to have to deal with anymore (or at least for a long period of time.)
I think that in my last several journals, months ago, I had brought up in some small way this other job that I've had for a while. It's basically this job that has kept me away from the fandom for much longer than I'd like, so I figure I owe an explanation, at least to an extent.
I don't exactly make it super well known, though it's also not a secret, that I spent an awful lot of money going to school for computer animation. So that means that I do know how to do a certain amount of basically everything within the process of computer animation, and for the past 8 (almost 9 now) years, I have been trying to find a way into that industry. I love doing 3D art, and I have to admit that much of the time I enjoy doing it a lot more than drawing, although many of the skills do overlap.
For the past several years I've been working with my boss, whom I met while in school to start up a small, boutique animation studio. Needless to say it is a difficult proposition to make money doing this, and it has been a difficult ride, but generally I was only spending 1-2 days a week on our project. Well honestly, 1-2 days a week on that project generally meant 20-24 hours per week in 2 days, which is somewhat tiring, and that by itself caused enough trouble with getting work done the other days of the week.
But this year, we got some interesting prospects. Without going into too much detail, we had some high-caliber prospective clients on the line for a while, and we were also being unofficially advised by a small group of people at Pixar, and so things looked like they might be changing, but we had a deadline to get a lot finished so that we could impress some people. So in effect, since for some time I was doing almost all the 3D work myself on the project, it turned out that I spent a fairly long period of time working on the project for 10-12 hours a day, every day, to get our project to a point where we might be able to actually make some money off it. I was getting paid (very minimally) but I kinda thought it was worth it, in the hopes that I would be able to actually do something worthwhile in the 3D industry.
After basically killing myself over this stuff, I decided to take some time off from the project to recharge and try to take care of some of my other obligations, like furry art. Now I haven't heard from my boss in a month, and I don't even know if the studio is going to exist anymore. I know she has a lot of complications with her job and life, so maybe things just hit a brick wall? Who knows? It's pretty depressing to me, I'll be honest, especially after putting in so many hours at an extremely discounted rate in order to make things work. But this is the reason I haven't been around much recently, and why I've kinda fallen off the map.
I know it's not a great excuse, that my other job was crazy. But once things cooled down there, I looked at my list and it was of course still way too long, and so I've had my head down for the last month basically trying to just get some stuff done, and get a more realistic plan ready for the future. On top of that, at least until further notice, I will only have 1 job, which is doing furry art. I have to admit, I am looking forward to only having 1 job to worry about.
After all that, I was pretty burned out on art, and so I had a bit of sort of funky art block to work through again. I am probably still working through it. My main goal was first to finish all the commissions that I took last year, because this is obviously way too damn long to keep anybody waiting. And then I was trying to cut down my overall commission list completely down before taking on any more commissions.
It is still my goal to finish up last year's commissions as soon as possible, and my overall goal is within the next couple of months to cut down my commission list to between 5 and 10 commissions at a time, so that people don't have to wait as long for me to work on their art. But I have also come to a point where I am completely broke and do still have a lot of bills to take care of (student loans are a bitch) and so I've come to the point where I can't really put off opening commissions any longer at this moment.
I don't really know what the future holds at the moment, but I do know that I have to start being more involved in the fandom again. I'm sorry for being generally flakey this year, I promise I'll start being able to get things in balance again soon.
I'm also not exactly sure how many commission slots I'll be opening; it kind of depends on how big the commissions are that take the slots. But I can say that I've been working very hard to shorten the list overall, and I'm really hoping that after this round I can start making slow but manageable progress towards my goals. I just need to do it in such a way that I'm not killing myself and won't get completely burnt out on art, because that's not really helpful for anybody.
On top of that, I know I mentioned it before in my last journal, but considering I'm still, as usual, in a bit of a bad way financially, I think I need to bring up again that much of my artwork is available as a print over on InkedFur.com! There are a lot of great artists over there who deserve a lot of love and support. My page can be found here: https://inkedfur.com/creator/tsaiwolf/
I hate being a pushy salesman, but unfortunately you have to do some things you don't like in order to survive sometimes. So I'll probably be posting up a teaser later with info. I even have a few artworks over there that haven't ever been posted on FA, so you might see some new stuff!
I've also never done anything like this, but I have in mind a list of animals that I'd like to draw as anthros, and I was thinking about making some of them adoptable, either on a first-come basis or maybe as an auction. I don't love the idea necessarily, but I need to figure out some other ways of getting back on my feet as well. So let me know your thoughts!
So I guess without further ado, commission slots are going to be open for a little while. Please send an email to tsaiwolfcommissions[at]gmail.com if you are interested in nabbing a spot! And here is the current list for reference (I have a few people not on this list who are waiting for some changes or pending final approval to post up their piece online, but if you don't see your name then I've probably already gotten in contact with you recently.)

Quick Update
General | Posted 11 years agoI still really wanted to do a longer update, and there were a few clerical things that I was trying to get done this week, but it doesn't really all seem to have come together. Oh well, I have made a lot of progress since getting back home from the holidays, so I'll just plan on continuing on in that fashion until I'm actually all caught up and whatnot.
I'm going to be scarce over the next couple of days; I'm starting up again at my other job in the City, and since the days I work there are typically 12-15 hours long, I won't have much left over for the furry art. However, I do want to announce now that I am going to be opening some more commission slots on Wednesday. I am aware of everyone who has emailed me recently about commission stuff and if you're reading this, I want you to know I'm not ignoring you guys, I just have a lot to catch up on and I can only do so many things every day. ^^;
EDIT - Oh yeah! In case you're interested, you can now follow me on twitter [at]tsaiwolf !
So there you go, there's more talking to be done but I am running out of time for tonight. Here's the current state of things:

It's not that I hate the holidays...
General | Posted 11 years ago...but I kinda hate the holidays.
For some reason, late November is the time when everything seems to ramp up. It's like people know that they're gonna lose hours during December, so instead of just allowing themselves to take some rest, they have to try to get 2 months' worth of work done before they get to celebrate anything.
My job is not an exception to this rule. Even though I'm working with a small startup, I feel like that actually can make it worse sometimes. So for the last several weeks I have been doing much more overtime in that department than I should have done, and it has been fairly stressful. I kept telling myself that it would be worth it, because after the crunch, I would at least be able to go back to visit my parents for Christmas, and that would be a nice bit of time that I could set aside to also work on commissions, and hopefully get caught up a bit (since I am woefully behind still, for which I sincerely and deeply apologize.)
Since I am pretty much broke most of the time, my parents bought me tickets to get to North Carolina to visit them this year. Which is a nice thought... I like my family a lot, but because of the price of plane tickets at this time of the year, I have ended up having to leave weeks prior to when I would probably have liked. So now I am in North Carolina, trying to get some work done, and it's going to be difficult.
As stated above, I love my family, but I wouldn't say that we are particularly close anymore. After college I came out to them, which they were kind of ok with in concept, but then when I actually got a boyfriend and started living my life, it became more of a big deal. I told them about my life and they got fairly upset, and since then they have become somewhat distant. It's disappointing, but most of the time I deal with it fairly easily by living 2500 miles away and not thinking about it, and just trying to live my life in a way that works for me. That said, it does mean that if I am obligated to go home for Christmas to visit them for almost a whole month, I have to be alone, because my guy would be most unwelcome. Which, go figure, kinda actually makes me feel a little unwelcome, too.
Well anyway, my parents also don't know that I draw furry artwork at all really, much less furry porn (which is fine... they don't need to know that, in my opinion.) But it is causing problems because I really don't feel like I can take a month off from both of my jobs, particularly since I am so behind, and people who have been on the commission list for a long time now are starting to get (understandably) impatient. But it is hard to find time that I can actually be alone and do my illustration. :(
Add to that the fact that I couldn't take my desktop home (which is the computer I use for all my furry art), and instead am working off my laptop (which is normally reserved for my other job), it turns out that there are some files and software that I didn't bring with me, and I'm just kicking myself.
I guess, all-in-all, I feel like I'm caught in a really crappy situation, and I'm sorry that first the depression and now all these shenanigans seem to have pushed my commissions from the forefront, where they should be. But I decided I should let everyone know where I am this time, and that I'm honestly not ignoring you guys, I'm just in kind of a bad situation at the moment. I will still be trying to do as much artwork from here as I can manage, and then coming up in January I will be able to get back into it with more regularity.
Oh, and I didn't really think about it before I left Cali unfortunately, but a lot of the art that I had ready to post is also on my computer at home. I'm feeling pretty dumb, but I'm also trying to figure out ways that will make it up to you guys, especially everyone who has been so patient on the commission list up until now.
And last of all, I feel like I have forgotten some people in the list, so if you have reserved a commission slot from me but you don't see your name on the list, please feel free to backhand me in the form of a strongly-worded email, and I'll fix that right up for you.
Well I hope everyone else's holidays go more smoothly than mine seem to be, and I will hopefully have a bit of art to post here soon.
Thanks guys,
-Tsai

Commission Slots 11/15
General | Posted 11 years agoHere is the current commission list as it stands. Again I apologize for not updating it regularly. I'm also sorry that I haven't worked through it in order, as I have really needed to work on the smaller commissions again in order to break out of my art block.
From now on I have more of a specific amount of money that I need to open in order to keep afloat, and it won't necessarily be tied to the amount of commission slots there are. So I am opening commission slots today, and I'm not entirely sure how many slots I will be taking. If you are interested, please email me at tsaiwolfcommissions[at]gmail.com , and I can help you to figure out pricing and whatnot.
Thanks!
Edit: Oh yeah, I have some artwork done for some commissioners that I just haven't gotten around to emailing yet, so if your name is absent, I will probably be sending you some art today. Thanks!
