I'm Back...
General | Posted 11 years agoHi everyone,
Over the past few months, I'm sure many of you have realized that I have been absent here on FA. I have had a number of people emailing me to ask where I have been and see if I'm doing alright, and I would like to go ahead and thank them here all at once. I appreciate your concern, it is definitely good to know that people here miss my work when I've been gone too long.
I offer my apologies that I haven't more active recently. I think that in my entire time of taking commissions (and possibly my entire artistic journey) I have never had such a harsh bout of artists' block as I have been going through recently. I know that, as artists, it is often the case that the creative juices will flow more freely at some times than at others, and this is a fact that we who draw all have to deal with. However, recently I have not only been dealing with the worst artists' block I've had, but also some of the worst depression that I've ever had occasion to deal with, coupled with a strange chain of successive sicknesses that seem to take place one after another which offer no rest at all.
I think that I am a generally laid-back person. I am not really excitable and joyous all the time, but I generally try to enjoy life as much as I can. I definitely have my fair share of what I will call "down times," where I feel a little icky, and work (especially artwork) seems to be a slog. But for a bunch of reasons which seem to have all come together to just wreck things in my life over the past several months, physically, emotionally and financially.
Until this time, I don't think I had ever been depressed to the point where I felt that I physically couldn't get out of bed, or that even having simple conversations with people were a difficult chore. The even more unfortunate side effect is that, even on many of those days where I could sit myself down and force myself to draw, it was extremely tiring and on top of that, often came out looking like garbage. Well, I know that every piece of art I draw can't be "the best," but I still don't really like putting out sub-par work.
It has taken some time, but a few things have started to turn around. I have been able to do many of the smaller commissions that I have in my list and started to break through my artists' block. On top of that, thanks to Covered California I now (for the first time since I-can't-remember-when) actually have health insurance, so I can get some of the medical issues checked out and a few of them have even been taken care of.
I know I have a lot to catch up on, and thankfully I have quite a bit of art that needs to be uploaded at this point. But I do finally feel like I'm at a place where I can open a few commissions again without feeling like too much of a jerk. So I will post another journal here in a few minutes with more commission-specific information, and then I will be posting some artwork over the course of the afternoon.
Thanks for reading if you did read through this, and thanks for sticking with me through a tough time... I do tend to become a bit of a recluse during troubled times, especially on the internet, but it is good to know that there are still a few people here on FA that care.
Thanks again, and there will be more art to look at soon!

Guide to Easy Commissioning!
General | Posted 12 years agoZeth's Guide to Commissioning!
Hello everyone! Zethsaire here, Tsaiwolf's personal assistant! We've been reworking a lot of policies and just still generally getting back into the swing of things since Tsai's long haitus while working at Google at the end of last year. We decided it would be helpful to provide an easy guide to commissioning for all our customers, telling you what to expect, what policy changes we may have made since the last time you or a friend commissioned us, and a general breakdown of how getting a commission from us actually works.
Changes to our Policies
First up, some policy changes. As per our pricing guide, found here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/10.....che=1372787391 , our prices have gone up since before the haitus. General prices are listed on the sheet, if you have questions or need clarification, you can always email Zethsaire at tsaiwolfcommissions@gmail.com.
We are not currently accepting reference sheet commissions. We enjoy designing characters for people, but right now we are not taking any more reference sheet commissions. We may offer them again in the future. If we do, the price sheet will be updated with pricing information for them.
We now charge extra for high-detail characters. This does not usually apply for most commissioners. However, if your character has wings or a very complex fur pattern, we are charging a flat 15% fee to help cover the extra time that Tsai will need to spend on your commission. We want everyone to have the same high-quality commission that Tsai creates, and for him to be able to do that, we need to charge for that extra time. Again, this does not affect most commissioners. Please email me if you would like to know if your character requires the high-detail fee.
We no longer send out a progress image for each step of the process. Before the haitus, we would send sketches, lines and flats out before sending the final image. However, we found that doing this for every step usually caused problems for getting commissions done in a timely fashion.
We will still be sending out a sketch for approval. However, be aware that since Tsai will not continue with the art until you have approved it, this may increase waiting times for a finished product.
Policy Clarifications
Changes:
Tsaiwolf will do one round of changes to a finished work. When you receive your image, please look it over carefully for everything that may be wrong with the commission. Tsaiwolf will then schedule in your change around the other commission work he has scheduled, do the changes, and send the image back to you. We will be charging for excessive changes. This will constitute a fee per hour of extra changes requested. If you need more changes than the first round, and feel that you should receive them for free, please email Zethsaire, but please be aware of this policy.
Payment:
Payment is due in advance, via PayPal. There are no exceptions to this rule. Tsaiwolf derives almost all his income from commissions. We appreciate everyone's willingness to continue to support Tsaiwolf and his art, but we do have to ask for payment in advance. For income tax tracking purposes, we require payment in USD via Paypal. We are unable to take checks, money orders, or credit card payments not paid through paypal.
Refunds:
In general, we are unable to do refunds. Because of our limited cash flow, it is difficult to refund a commission once it has been paid for. However, if you are in an extreme situation and need a refund, we will of course do what we can to help you. Again, send Zethsaire an email and we will try to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
Commissioning a Work
To commission a work, ask questions, or for any other information, please email Zethsaire at tsaiwolfcommissions@gmail.com. By letting Zehsaire handle questions, billing, and commission information, Tsaiwolf has more time to do art! Rest assured, Zeth and Tsai are in constant communication, and if you really need to talk to him directly, Zeth will be more than happy to forward your email along.
In order to take a commission, we need to know what kind of commission you want, how many characters, and whether your want flat or full color. We are not currently accepting lineart-only commissions. Check the journals for commission availability. Tsaiwolf is trying to cut down on the list of commissions, so we will not be opening as many commissions as usual. Please refer to the price sheet for base pricing information before emailing about a commission.
Once you hammer out the details with Zethsaire, payment will be required, via Paypal, before the commission is confirmed and your name is added to the list. If you do not know how to send a Paypal payment, please ask! Zethsaire will be more than happy to help you.
It takes at least a month to work through the list. Please be patient! We are doing our best to try to cut down the list and reduce waiting times; this is a work in progress. You can email Zethsaire at any point for an update, but the journal waiting list is the easiest way to check the status of your commission.
We will be emailing to confirm commission details about a week before we work on your commission. Since it can take a month to do the commission, we want to make sure we do your commission correctly!
Once the commission is done, you will receive a high quality digital print via email. We do not offer printed work at this time, though you may certainly request the original .psd if you'd like to take it to a print shop to be printed. One round of changes will be included – see changes policy above.
After that, Tsaiwolf will post your commission, unless asked not to. The image belongs to you – you may post it to your website, print it out, or generally do whatever you'd like with it. We ask that you mention Tsai's name as the artist, since this helps spread the word about his work, and if you'd like, post a link to his FA page. Enjoy your commission!!
Sincerely,
Tsaiwolf and Zethsaire

Graphic Novel (Personal Project)
General | Posted 14 years agoHello again everybody!
First I'd like to say thanks to everyone who is watching me, both my long time watchers and all my recent watchers as well. And to all my commissioners, thank you not only for your business, but for being so patient with me as I try to figure out this whole life situation for a bit. I know I'm not exactly the most talkative artist, but I really do appreciate all the comments and favorites, as well as watches.
I'm going to make a really long story short: I have a lot of student loan bills as well as regular living expenses; I tried to find a day job that could do for a steady source of income, but since it's been many months with no success, I've been back working on commissions and art and just trying to make it work as a full-time furry artist. I think I'm doing alright (probably could do better with working from home, it definitely causes some time-management issues) but I am figuring things out.
However, as an artist, I feel myself getting really bummed because I don't get much of a chance to work on my own projects. I'm the kind of artist who seems to have a finite amount of creative energy from day to day, and what that means is, after I've been drawing for many hours on commissions, I don't really have much creative juice left over to do my own work.
Some of you may remember about 5 months ago, I was working on a project idea. In fact, I had written a story/script (that wasn't posted online) for a comic that I wanted to do, but then it got pushed to the back burner during job searching. I uploaded a few character references, and talked to FurPlanet for a while about how to go about getting my work published... and then it all disappeared.
Here are those character drawings I did:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5569588/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5709561/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5709710/
So, here is my dilemma; I have a story written for a 20-30 page comic, and characters designed, but not really enough time to work on it. Now, I've heard about this site called kickstarter.com, which gave me an idea that I wanted to run by you all, and just see if I could get some feedback.
If you've never heard of kickstarter, basically it's a site where people can post their ideas for projects and try to get funding from the masses. Usually they post a project idea, and then random passersby can choose to donate if they would like to see the project come to fruition. In return for certain donation amounts, you get rewards; for instance, high-res wallpapers, prints, t-shirts, etc. Now, I can't actually post my project up on kickstarter since it is an adult-rated comic and kickstarter.com doesn't allow pornographic material. However, I figure that I could potentially try to do something similar, just without using that website; instead I would just offer my own rewards and use my paypal account.
The way payments and rewards works is pretty simple. There is a goal that would need to be met, and people can donate to the project if they want. That money won't be spent on anything right away; it will stay in the paypal account until the total funding is met. You would get rewards for donating certain amounts of money. For example, $5 might get you a set of downloadable wallpapers for your computer that I would make to go along with the project. $10 could get you a nice laminated bookmark along with the wallpapers. Since I am also fairly sure that I have a publisher willing to print the books, some of the rewards would include a copy of the comic that was signed by me. Other rewards could include high-quality prints, a t-shirt that I'm working on designing, and possibly even some original artwork.
The way that kickstarter works is to have a time limit on the donations. So if after, say, a month, I had fallen short of the project budget, then I would refund the money, and I wouldn't have to pay to send out all the rewards still, so nobody is any worse for the wear. I like this idea in that it keeps things very simple and clear; either I get enough funding and continue, or I don't get enough funding and try to figure out how to work on the comic in my limited free time.
Anway, sorry for the long-windedness, I'm just trying to get an idea of whether or not this sort of thing is even worth trying to set up. Would anybody be willing to help me draw a good-quality comic and get it published? Of course you can feel free to tell me to shove it if it's a terrible idea, I know that times are tough for everyone right now, so if there's nobody willing to donate I completely understand.
Thanks for taking the time to read this huge pile of brain vomit.
Tsai
