Hurricane Florence
Posted 7 years agoSo I had a nice 'fun' time with this Hurricane. We lost our power on the Night of the 13th. This caused a bit of confusion and frustation on us as we only had some minor prep done for the freezer but at least the rest of the house was as prepped as we could be.
Friday was a fun time as we cooked up most of the meat we had sense we couldn't keep any of it. It was a sad sad time, have two 'normal sized' freezers and a large Freezer all packed full with meat! Quite a bit of screaming and burning early on from my mom as she tried to cook with a tiny charcoal grill. The heat was slowly starting to get to us at this time as we tried to figure out ANYTHING we could do to stay cool. We found out the leather sofa would become cold to lay at least for a short period of time.
Saturday this was the 'fun day.' So most of us didn't get much sleep at all due to the heat. Mom made breakfast and then went to work... Yes , you read that right DURRING the hurricane she went to work. At this time , the street had a lot of debris from trees but not enough to impede a car. As my dad and I are trying to stave off unrelenting boredom and the heat, the raining starts to get a bit worse and the water levels in the street start to rise. A small level of panic starts to build up as we watch the water starting to flood one of our neighbors and try to save some of their stuff with the help of neighbors who live 'higher up' then them. By the time it has reached 6PM , my dad and I are noting that the street at least what we can see has completely flooded and even slightly came up to our driveway. Some more neighbors, head down to a house across our street to knock down a wooden fence as it goes down hill to help drain some water and hopefully prevent further damage. A few hours later , my mom comes home from work as she sees the main road has no flooding, she just drives RIGHT into the flooded street. My dad and I , kinda see and hear her but we didn't want to believe she would do something like this. About half an hour later Speical forces come in to save my mom from the roof of her car and evacuate us from the house. At this point in time, the water level has nearly reached our porch but flooded the left side of yard. My mom and I get into the heavy truck , this was the only scary point in this time line. Go up the ladder into the truck was scary as hell for me. Oh , we just packed up some blankets and pillows as well as some of my dad's meds because in a semi-paniced mode that is what the military guy said what we should pack. We get to the shelter, we wanted to give my dad his insulin for the night but they wanted to test his Blood sugar levels. It was 569, so now my dad gets to go to the hospital with us in tow. We get there but are told they are only taking patients , so my mom and I now go to a new shelter this one more suited for people with health problems.
Sunday, After a very uncomfortable time 'sleeping' on the floor of a gymnasium of the middle school/shelter. I start getting yelled at by my mom because I ONLY packed blankets and pillows. Which was good thing I packed as they didn't have any free blankets or pillows. After having some breakfast which was just a muffin , my dad comes to the shelter after being released because his only health issue was High blood sugar which while still high isn't in a 'danger zone.' At this point in time, my mom notices she doesn't have her wallet any more. This is an issue because she had a ton of cash on her as well as it carrying all her ids. Which makes her more panicked and angry. Well she starts reaching out to anyone and everyone she knows... and well her social network web and skills are really good. She was able to get a decent amount of clothing for us , some food for my dad and some extra snacks. Dinner at the shelter was warm hamburgers which caused almost everyone's mood at the place to bright up as they haven't had warm food at all. As apparently power at the shelter was restored only a few hours before we ever arrived. Before we attempted to go to sleep , they got another shipment of cots. My dad got one, but due to his breathing, he was only able to sleep on it for about an hour. He has extreme difficulty breathing , seems to only sleep 'well' when in a reclining position while sleeping. So I take the cot for my self after helping my dad sit/sleep in a free wheel chair. This is about the only time I got some 'ok sleep.'
Monday- We wake up , my mom noticing the rain has stopped and being just antsy tells us she doesn't know anyone to try and take her home. So she starts walking home from the shelter. A few hours later , she comes to the shelter and starts packing some of our stuff not telling us anything while we try hard to get her to tell us. This only gets her angrier but we find out shortly. As she is walking one of her friends find her walking and take her to the house. The neighbors help her search for her wallet and they find it! She finds out the house didn't get flooded any only damage taken so far is the ceiling has semi-collapsed from water damage in the garage. So we spend the rest of the day cleaning some of the debris around the house and just melting from the heat which cause tempers to rise more when breaks are required to just not pass out! We still have running water so I spend a lot of time in the shower trying to cool down.
Tuesday - Still hot as BALLS , more friends come over and help us. My sister's husband's Parents come in to help set up a tarp over some of the missing tiles. They heard of my mom walking on the side of the street and were in semi-disbelieve of this, not from us but his own network of people. They had even less damage then us , just their fence got damaged. Though the Bakery they own did have some water damage but not of the equipment is comprizied. Some more friends of my mom come in bring some extra batteries , some lights and even medium sized battery fan. My mom heads back into town with another friend, while my dad and I just try to stay cool. We find my mom has successfully rented the LAST vehicle at that rental place. So my dad and I bissfully spend 90 min in the truck before my mom who is trying to stay cool outside relizes , She too could come in here and enjoy the radio and cool air! My Uncle and Aunt has returned from the evacuation to their house around this time. They had a lot more damage the us but no flood damage. But still have three rooms that can be used to sleep in as well as still having power and water! So we decide to bunk up with them.
Wensday-Thurdsay morning. We spend time staying cool and entertained by watching tv. I help with shopping as I needed to move about some. We find out nearly all the stores only are selling non-perishable food stuffs. But we hear a rumor that Food Lion has gotten a fresh delivery of food. So we head over there but don't bother trying to shop as the line was long and non moving. So spend more time watching tv. By the morning , my mom goes to head off to work but before she does she wants to check out the house, my dad wanted to go as well at this time but is turned down quickly. She shows up some time later and once again starts packing shit up with out telling us ANYTHING. We had to force her to make her tell us that power was back up...
