Tentatively taking orders.. [Lineart commissions]
Posted 10 years agoSo i figure it's in my best interest to start taking on "orders" NOW instead of the last moment..
So here goes: Lineart starting from $30 a pop. (surcharges apply for stuff like extra characters, details, backgrounds, etc. )
Open to most things, run it by me and see what i think!
and not forgetting this lot, either.
affie-beck-lauder
darknz (thanks for the input, i'll get to that asap.)
Deiser (inked one, gonna ink the other shortly)
janusw pone.
anywho, starting at Five slots, we'll see what round one brings, neh?

Getting back into it - Clearin' the backlog.
Posted 10 years agoit's been a while... soooo i'm trying to get back into things (comic will update at the end of this month!)
If folks have read my twitter, i got slapped with a rather large power bill, which i paid (over half with loose change), still left me at a loss, so i'm gonna try to make up that loss, or at least cover my share of the rent the week after next. I'll update folks when i open up again, but i'll be willing to entertain questions, notes, etc in the meantime.
But first, clearing ze backlog.. I owe a few things.. so i'll start with what i directly owe (from what i can remember)
so.. what i'm gonna list first are those what i know i owe, and are gonna be working on for the next few days.. (and if i haven't mentioned anyone, i apologise and if you pipe up, i'll add you to the list... but my memory's usually pretty good.)
Via
affie-beck-lauder (whom i owe one or two anyway i believe )
darknz (at least an edit of one.. i gotta verify deets as to how that needs to be composed. get back to me, man!)
Deiser (at least two, gonna get one at least to the inking stage, a neat sketch at the very, VERY least)

Posted 11 years agonow, not forgetting people that i owe this, that, something else to.. (haven't forgotten, Tape, Deiser, Dark, Squato, etc.. don't fret)
i need to garner a little food money over this weekend, and to get back into my art groove a bit.. so i'm offering $15 pencil sketches pinups, mainly single character things.... I'm pretty open to most things, so don't be afraid to ask..

Shading techniques & efficiency
Posted 11 years agookidoke, as many of you folks know, i have a webcomic. ( http://www.ariannia.com/ )
I am curious as what sort of shading/highlighting i could utilise to not only make things a little faster, but to keep the same overall feel of the whole thing.
It's because my standard highlighting technique of lasso tool + gradient set to additive/linear dodge is, while really nice and all, is really time consuming to perform, i'm asking for any advice, insight, etc to alternatives, or even examples to what i could do to keep a similar look, but is more efficient to do with more or less similar results.
or cel shading techniques i could use i suppose.
thoughts?
Note: i use Manga Studio 5.

Posted 11 years agoStylus died. won't be doing any digital things for a little while until i can manage to shuffle finances, etc.. this'll make a dent in the ol' finances.. (not a thing i can afford easily, either)
unfortunately it died whilst i was just getting started on the comic's shading, too.. this'll force a slowdown as i'll need to do the everything in that regard via mouse.
but no sketchies or digital artsings (like i said) until i and source a replacement..
(intuos 2 tablet, unable to source locally, don't trust ebay as far as i can throw it.. )
Just note, i know folks would mean well and fire off something on amazon, etc.. but i live in Australia (tasmania to be precise) so anything "cheap" you could possibly fire off to me would be prohibitive by way of shipping costs.
not to mention it'd take ages.
But! open to suggestions as to what i could do in the meantime.. pencil sketches and hand-drawn inks are still a viable thing.. though it might eat into the paper stocks a tad.
Also donations. open for those.

Posted 11 years agoFor starters, i've only got the two left owing that i've already said i'd take, so don't worry guys, i haven't shut down on you...
That said, a thanks to those who have come forth and enabled me to not only be able to eat this weekend, but to blast some cobwebs off the old tablet skills.
And the added bonus of being able to hopefully be able to find homes for three little kittens.
i now also gotta get to the comic, and update that in short order, which will be by this weekend, i hope.

Posted 11 years agoThat's right, folks. $15 sketchies, seems a few folks were interested, and i not adverse to doing a few more,
these little blighters are sketched, refined, and given a nice bit o' shading to boot.
not to mention they look shiny..
now who'd like one?

Posted 11 years agoi'm gonna open up for a couple of $15 digital sketches.. fairly basic, shading on a whim.
any takers? i'm gonna be doing them on and off while i work on my other commissions.. it's just so i'm not staring at the same piece for a time.
that's $15 -base- any extra things will be of an extra cost.
negotiable on the subject of "other things" just ask!

Oh yeah, i might be slow in uploading as i'm having a minor financial crisis in that i haven't been able to pay my internet bill (and won't be able to until i make some dosh) Internet throttling is fun, like 56k all over again!... and before people think, the money that usually goes into budgeting for my internet got eaten by the power bill.. Simple as that.
Also in a masterstroke of irony, after the 6 years or so of being sick with disease, on immunosupressants, etc.. barely a month after the op goes by and i seem to have caught myself a head cold. heh.

Posted 11 years agoOkay, now that i have access to computer, and thus a keyboard i can type worth a damn on, means i can give folks the tale of my adventure in hospital thus far.
Long story short? My large intestine, poof. gone.
I had an affliction known as Ulcerative Colitis. Dunno what that is? well take chrons, make it nastier, and that's UC in a nutshell.
and i had it since 2008.
so yeah, went in on monday, had the thing taken out.. still in hospital though. things are an effort (like getting about) but i should be out in no time.
edit: i'll give the slightly gorier details if asked, however... i don't believe in with-holding this type of info.. seriously, keep an eye on your health in that regard, i'm only 32 years old, take that into consideration. =p

Comic, Commissions, News & Patreon.
Posted 11 years agoSo, as some of you may have noticed, i posted page from my comic, seen here: www.ariannia.com This was a page that a kind soul paid for me in order to do (he goes by the name of nguard1 over on twitter, dunno if he has an FA or not), but it was nice to actually update for once. Given how much script i've rewritten thus far, it feels good to start lumbering this beast along.
That said, i will be somewhat inactive come may, due to the operation i've mentioned in a previous journal (it got moved to the 12th of may), but i wouldn't mind people's input on what i could do to have the comic move along once more, and to have it more financially viable for me to do so. Right now i'm looking at ballpark $200 a page. Though i'm not expecting that straight off the bat, i'm considering looking at a Patreon to achieve this goal, as it seems a tad more manageable than just doing a donation ticker type thing. But page sponsorship will ensue all the same.
again, any input would be appreciated.
The somewhat nascent Patreon is here: http://www.patreon.com/turnsky
THAT said, i'm also open for other commission type dealies.

Since 2008.
Posted 11 years agoOkay, I've had a nice little rant and crap prepared, but I had a reread of that and decided it wasn't indicative of my mood at the moment, and bear in mind that i'm not whinging, or venting, i'm more typing this as a “sigh of relief” because THANK GOD IT'S OVER.
In Late 2007 my grandmother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and thus began surgeries, chemo, and other fun things with me being her principle carer, which was stressful just watching her deteriorate.
2008 in the following year (february to be precise), just 9 months after her initial diagnosis, she passed on in her sleep, I was the first to notice and point this out, at this point I was just numb, I think I already grieved in the interim, and didn't go through the process as much afterwards.
This is where the “fun” began, .
Her son, my uncle decided to contest the will under some loophole available here, he wanted a larger share.. Speculation simply because I was a major beneficiary of which being the most plausible (he doesn't like me very much), which compounded my stress issues..
later on in march that year, I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an auto-immune disease that affects the large intestine, or colon. After I had finally gotten a job I was happy in, working a traineeship in graphic prepress and publishing, I enjoyed that.. Got let go after two months due to symptoms..
ALL the while, my mother's state was spiralling downwards.. I shan't go into full details on this, but suffice it to say it all came to a head a few years later after a suicide attempt on her part.. I wasn't home at the time and came back to police, ambulance, and mental health services all swarming the place.
All this time the legal proceedings involving the estate (the house) had been ticking along.. Long and short? hadta sell up, and move.. Which is fine because the house was falling apart around my ears and it was becoming increasingly hard to keep it maintained with just two folks there.
Take into account my Colitis, which had been churning along also.. which gave me a nice little complications come 2012 in the form of affecting the bile ducts and giving me some gallstone issues.. WORST PAIN I'VE HAD YET. Took me out of action for a week, too.
A little into 2013, and plans are being made to not only move.. and believe me looking for rentals that're friendly with cats is a challenge.. and catteries are not cheap.
But making plans to have major surgery to have my entire colon removed.
You read that right.. entire large intestine, gone.. i'll go into detail about this in another journal down the road.
I've kinda prepared this in the hopes that i'll be all set back up with internet access good and proper by then. But if i'm not, i've got this handy.
But this, is in a nutshell why I've been rather inactive on the art front by large. It's hard for me to do much when i'm constantly feeling tired and happier to just recline in my chair and not do a damn thing. There are people who can work through their ailments, i'm just trying to trudge through mine as best I can.
Fast forward to Today, 24th of February, 2014.. It's done. House is officially changed hands, locks have been changed and i'm now not allowed to even set foot inside the property lest I be trespassing, not that I actually want to.
It was a harrowing move, on friday the removalist pulled out on us for some unknown reason, but given there was only one with a teenaged boy on hand. Baulked at the workload (we DID tell him we're moving house, what'd he expect?) and scarpered afterwards citing he'd be back in a hour, then when called... was doing another job.
Thank god for family, my father and uncle (non-douchebag one, I have a few of those) came to bat for us and helped us move an unholy amount of stuff over to the new place.
That said, new digs, all happy and relaxed now. Just need to unpack the everything.
Also get the cats acclimated to the new residence.
thanks for letting me have a little vent.
