Today I'm posting a piece of art with a heavy focus on autosexuality (now live!). To accompany it, I thought I would take some time to write about what it is, clear up some misconceptions and share my experience of it. I welcome any questions or comments below and will do my best to answer all of them!

A definition is a good place to start. Autosexuality is a sexual orientation in which an individual experiences sexual attraction to themselves. This can be in addition to experiencing attraction to others, or it may be the primary source of an individual's sexual attraction. Autosexuality is like other orientations, such as heterosexuality or homosexuality, in that it refers to an individual's patterns of sexual attraction.

I experience autosexuality in addition to bisexuality - that is, I am attracted to men and women, and one of the men I am most attracted to is myself. Looking back, I can recognise that I've had sexual feelings for myself since puberty, but I only started to realise a strong sexual preference for myself since I was 16. It manifests in a variety of ways, from becoming sexually aroused when seeing my reflection (whether nude or clothed) to experiencing sexual fantasies about myself.

It can be said that autosexuality exists on a spectrum or continuum just like homosexuality. Some people may only have a mild arousal when they see themselves in the mirror, and others may daydream of having sex with themselves multiple times a day. I'd place myself in the latter category, as a highly horny and highly autosexual individual.

There is a romantic counterpart to autosexuality, aptly named autoromanticism, where one experiences romantic attraction to themselves. It can be hard to define, but an example would be wishing to date oneself, or a desire to be in a committed romantic relationship. I am not autoromantic - in relation to myself, I experience only sexual attraction. However, in relation to others I can and do experience romantic attraction. In other words, I don't "love" myself any more than anyone else, but I'd totally fuck myself.

If I could.

I wish I could. It's hard when the object of your sexual interest is always so intimately close to you, yet you can never kiss him or breed him or feel him penetrate you. Sometimes these thoughts can be quite depressing for me.

Just like other sexual orientations, there are stereotypes and misconceptions about autosexuality - and they can be just as hurtful to the individual they're directed at.
For example, one of the biggest misconceptions about autosexuality is that it is the same as being self-absorbed or narcissistic, but this is not the case. Autosexuality is a sexual orientation and has nothing to do with an individual's level of self-absorption or self-esteem. In fact, there is basically no overlap between the two. Narcissists aren't sexually attracted to themselves (unless they happen to be autosexual as well). This conflation between autosexuality and narcissism is more a misconception about what narcissism is, probably based on the only thing most people know about the Greek myth of Narcissus (that he fell in love with himself).

The artwork I commission is one of the most fulfilling outlets I have found for my autosexuality. I will always enjoy it alone, but I love engaging with other people in discussion of it. One of my overarching goals with my profile was to spread awareness of autosexuality and share my experience of it so that it may be helpful to others. In that spirit, I would love to answer any questions you may now have about autosexuality in general, or specifically how it relates to me.
