We're doing a NEW FUR CON in Reno! Cool stuff like GO-KARTS!
General | Posted 13 years agoYes, really, we are. Fo' shizzle. http://www.biggestlittlefurcon.org/
It's not related to the (rumored fizzling) previous attempts to get a con going in Las Vegas, though I hope they get something together someday too.
Here's what we'll have, all in the hotel or its parking lot:
9 restaurants (with normal prices, not "hotel" prices)
2 more 24-hour restaurants (also normal prices)
4 bars in the hotel (reasonably priced for well drinks)
Go-Karts (fursuits welcome!)
Mini-Golf (fursuits welcome!)
24-hour bowling (fursuits welcome!)
Arcade
Laser Tag
Driving Range
185-foot-tall swing
Candy Store
$3 movie theater, with loveseat seating (plays movies that are 2-5 months old)
Gambling (it is a casino-hotel after all)
A 24-hour Wal-mart just across the street for any supplies you might need.
Liquor/beer/wine sold 24 hours-a-day at the 24-hour Wal-mart (no dry time in Nevada)
In the con space itself:
A big hangout den where everyone will have space to congregate and socialize
Toys in the hangout space like giant dice, twister, a magnet art board, anything else we can think of
Dances Friday and Saturday nights (and possibly Thursday if we can get the room set up fast enough)
Electronic Gaming
Tabletop Gaming
Dealers selling all the things you love
Art auction/show
And of course panels
So, we have pretty much all the fur con staples, plus a bunch of attractions on-site that while not officially "part" of the con, are there for hotel guests to enjoy. Most of them seem receptive to fursuiters coming by to goof around... they usually don't care as long as you're a paying customer. We have confirmed some activities are fursuit-friendly, and also confirmed that some are not (gambling and the swing are not fursuit-friendly).
The only caveat: you can't go on the casino floor at all with your face covered by anything. But you never have to touch the casino floor to get to the convention space, so it's fine.
I'm super-excited about this whole thing, and I think it's going to be a great event! Spread the word and get more people interested in coming, and we can do even more!

possible replacement for hand-sewing!
General | Posted 14 years agoso, I just tried attaching together two fur pieces using my serger on the following settings:
flatlock tension
no knife
normal (not rolled hem) edge
after sewing, i pulled on the two pieces and they flattened out completely, with no seam bulk at all. There was some thread showing if you dug deep in the fur, but it disappeared quite nicely. Wondering if this was a viable replacement for hand sewing on my head pieces, I even tried shaving the test piece, and i got it shaved pretty short without the stitching showing!
The biggest thing it was vulnerable to was my slicker brush; that wanted to grab threads and yank them out to where they were big obvious loops. Gonna play around with it a bit more, but i think i may be on to something!

General | Posted 14 years agoword-of-mouth sorta thing. Yes, I'm being a sellout. But actually, the guy's art seems pretty neato, and he is looking for more exposure, so there you go.

RF con report
General | Posted 14 years agoRF was great as always!
shiuk and I flew into Portland, where we rode the rest of the way up with
gamercoon and
grecko. Big thanks to them for letting us share the car ride up with them; plane tickets were way cheaper into Portland than into Seattle.
The con itself was largely uneventful for me; I mostly just BSed with old friends and met a couple new ones. Three good things stood out:
* For the first time ever, I tried selling underwear in the dealer's den;
shiuk had them at his table and was selling them for me since he was stuck there anyway. I made a decent profit even though it was my very first try! I was really surprised when all the smaller sizes had sold out by the middle of Saturday. I'll definitely do that again, maybe for FC.
* We accidentally ran across a really good Thai+Pho restaurant that was next to the nearest Wal-Mart (we were at Wal-Mart getting supplies). The place is called, paradoxically, "The Best Pho & Thai." Definitely go there next year, if you have a car.
* Wandering though the hotel, half-lost though errors of my own I'm sure, Gamercoon and Grecko and I ran across a couple who were playing a complex-looking board game in the other courtyard. We became fast friends and are looking forward to meeting up with them again at FC.
Only one bad thing happened: I forgot to bring any kind of fan (I also didn't really have any room to bring one), and wal-mart had only giant box fans, so I went fanless for the con, and my fursuit heads took forever to dry. Well, really, they kinda never really did. It was pretty gross. I'm gonna work on something more compact that I can always pack along in the future.
grecko generously gave me some high-flow PC fans that he abandoned because they were too noisy. I'll see what I can do with that.
I got to see many friends, too numerous to list. I love that I know so many people in the fandom; it's like a big family reunion every time I go to a con, seeing all the people I know and recognize, even if I don't have time to socialize with them all.
Next con is FC. I hope to have a bunch of underwear and other stuff made up to sell there, and I think I have half of an artist alley table to put it up for sale. Look for pictures to come up on FA of what I will have for sale at FC!

WAAAASP
General | Posted 14 years agoFor some reason, there was a wasp buzzing around on the inside of my bedroom window this morning, trying to find a way outside.
I'd heard some species of bee release a defense pheromone that attracts other bees to the location of one that has been klled, so i didn't want to kill it.
So, while it was wandering on the window, I covered his ass with a shot glass and capped that off with a credit card. The whole mess is sitting outside in the cold now where he will get nice and sluggish so I can upend the glass and release him.
I don't like killing bugs unless they are a danger to me... I'm that weird guy that always takes spiders and releases them back into the outdoors. ^^

Back home
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm home now, recovering from the surgery. Back is very stiff and sore, but the hydromorphone I was sent home with helps quite a lot.
Shiuk, bless his soul, is helping me with my daily needs while my movements are restricted. Recovery is just starting, but is going well so far. I have all of next week to spend at home healing up, thankfully, before I have to return to work.

General | Posted 14 years agoI'm feeling wonderful, but of course quite sleepy. I'll find out later or maybe tomorrow what the doctor actually did.
The staff here is great, and in fact my nurse loves the fact that I make costumes. Might end up volunteering here for the kids someday.
As I was writing this, dinner came by. Fairly bland, but I destroyed it in minutes anyway.
also, I have a PAIN BUTTON. it is my best friend. The pain drugs are making me sweat like crazy, but are otherwise pretty good! No nausea or any other trouble.

Back surgery
General | Posted 14 years agoThis is it; I go under the knife in a few hours. Thank you all for the well wishes; it's comforting to know you all care so much. I'll make another report when it's all over and I'm back in the land of the conscious.
back surgery
General | Posted 14 years agowell, it's almost time. Back surgery is Thursday morning. They are actually cutting out and permanently removing a portion of two vertebra; I'm surprised that part (apparently) isn't needed for structural stability. I'm told i'll be very sore for about two weeks, and need another 4 weeks after that to fully recover. But if successful (70-90% estimated chance of success), the stabbing leg pains will go away, and the numbness in my left foot will go away. That will be nice. Once the stabbing leg pains go away, there should no longer be any restrictions on my movement, save for the soreness. After working through the soreness, my life should be back to some semblance of normal.
On another note, I love my insurance. My out-of-pocket cost for the surgeon (only the surgeon, not the anasthesiologist or the hospital stay itself) is a whopping $150. Instead of like 10 grand.

Underwear!
General | Posted 14 years agoI have done a few new underwear designs. Pictures are on my FX gallery. Username there is Tyco as well. I won't post a link in this journal because i think FA's TOS now frowns upon that.
I.... am an idiot.
General | Posted 14 years agoSo, for the last couple days I've been taking in the seams on Gomi, for his owner who is much smaller than he was originally built (I built Gomi extra big so that anyone who bought him could fit)
Guess what I did....
yeah, you guessed right. I took in the seams too far. Or, at least, farther than I intended. It might still fit since the original intended seams left wiggle room, but it's AWFULLY tight.
So, i may have just made a lot more work for myself.... story of my life.
*curls into a ball and cries*

Attn Fursuit makers in the bay area: want free foam?
General | Posted 15 years agoI have a whole bunch of upholstery foam I've been scrounging from the trash at work, that was used as shipping material and is quite clean. I have something like about 300 pieces of 1/2" foam, 50cm by 25cm. It's pink, but no one should really care. It is, however, fairly small pieces. I've found they're useful for most fursuit head and foot work, and only occasionally end up attacking my larger purchased pieces.
I now have so much of it that I will never plausibly use it all, so I'd like to give it to the fursuit making community. It was free to me, so it's free to you. Who wants some? I'll bring a whole carload of it down with me the next time I travel to the bay area, probably late March.
(Also, I'd prefer that it be used for your own projects, and not for profit, but even if you make money from it, it's better than it going to the landfill).

Any old-school video game enthusiasts out there?
General | Posted 15 years agoBlatantly copied with permission from
arcnova from http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1935907/, and modified slightly to match me. Go contact him too if this applies to you.
I'm curious because I'd really enjoy having someone, or several someones out there with whom I can share my passion with. Video Gaming is a common trait among furries, but it's usually the modern games they play. I love watching modern video games, but I'm not so good at playing them, and I just haven't been keeping up on the industry nearly as much as I used to years ago. :<
Classic video games are more my speed. Generally anything from the NES-era through the PS2-era and anything in between. Primarily this includes 2D console, handheld, and arcade games, and DOS-era PC games. Especially 2D shooters, platformers, and RPGs. I'm also interested in exchanging recommendations for great games that may have slipped by unnoticed, or recommendations for modern games with old-school gameplay. I'm very flexible in that regard! ^_^
Anyone out there interested in having a skunk as a penpal? ...Or crosspad pal, as it were? :3

alcoholic drink - need a name!
General | Posted 15 years agoI just put together a bulk amount of an alcoholic drink. It consists of:
2 parts rockstar energy+recovery (this is a lemon flavored thing)
2 parts stoli citros
1 part limoncello
All the ingredients are lemony, and the final product is 50 proof, slightly yellow.
What should I call it? The best thing I can think of is "lemon party," but I really should give it a furry name of some kind.

discount plane tickets for fc... spread the word!
General | Posted 15 years agoSouthwest airlines is having a sale on flights right now. They usually run until the end of thursday. The time range where the sale is valid falls right on the dates for fc.
You must search for the fare on their website and book it with them directly. To my knowledge, they are not partnered with orbitz or expedia or any of those others.
If you already booked a ticket with them, keep in mind you can usually cancel your current ticket, get back the money as a credit, and use that credit to purchase the cheaper fare. Call to be sure.
Fursuiters, remember southwest is the only airline which still allows two free checked bags.

Please name my husky?
General | Posted 15 years agoSo, I'm making a white, gray, and black husky for myself. It's my third fursuit, my second for myself, and the paws are the only thing done so far. I would love suggestions on what to name him, since I'm terrible at coming up with names!
My favorite so far is "Octane." I am thinking I want to do a name that suggests something engine related, but all suggestions would be great.

Going to RF
General | Posted 15 years agoI'll be at RF starting on Friday morning, until more-or-less the end of the con Sunday afternoon.
Tyco is all patched up (except the hand paws, which i will patch on the plane on the way), smelling nice in his bin, and ready to fly.
Hope to see you there!

life update and stuff
General | Posted 15 years agoI bought a house for myself finally last month. It's pretty workable as-is, but I want to make changes to make it EPIC. Those changes will take a long time, but hopefully be worth it. I've already made a few improvements, like chopping holes in the ceiling and installing lights in it. Looks like I'll be staying in Reno for at least a while now.
We also painted one room; it's a bizarre scheme, but it actually looks pretty cool. The light switches and outlets were changed to black, and at the light switch level, there is a black band, 6 inches wide, all the way around the room. Above that band, the wall is light gray. Below, it is an intense royal blue. ACTUAL COLOR painted on the walls in a room. It's weird to me. But it's growing on me.
The house is still scattered with boxes and crap all over, but I'm slowly working through them. Right now I'm making curtains so I can actually arrange my living room the way I want without showing off my electronics to all the world. Then I can actually dig through all the boxes and put everything away.
I'm slowly setting back up a sewing space and a workspace for fursuits. I have plans to try to build another suit for myself before RF. We'll see how that comes along.
My back is doing a little better. The injections helped, and the place I moved into is a short walk to work (only like 2 minutes longer than driving), so I am now getting consistent daily exercise, even if it's just a little bit. It's also close enough I can stroll back home for lunch, so I'll stop eating out and eating such a crappy diet.
All in all, things are actually pretty good. My health is slowly improving, my bank account is slowly growing, and I can't really complain about anything.

ugh... more back problems
General | Posted 15 years agoso, I finally meet with a neurosurgeon who reviews my MRIs. I apparently have the back of a 50-year-old. I'm 27. Disc is degenerated quite a bit. Every other form of treatment the doctors have tried has not gotten me relief, and it's still getting worse. Current attempt at treatment is prescription anti-inflammatories and pain killers as needed. Unfortunately I don't tolerate percocet or the other hardcore narcotic painkillers very well, so I don't get to use those. So far, this attempt is not working either.
Last chance is going to be in a week or so, which is an epidural shot of steroids, directly around the nerve cluster that's being pinched. If that doesn't work either, then I either have to live with it, or get surgery. And with my current life situation, I'll probably have to live with it until at least december.
So, so far, it's still getting progressively worse. I can get some relief by positioning myself just right, but it usually only lasts a few minutes, and is completely impractical for actually getting anything done.
