‘Depraved’ Penguins and the Scientists Who Watch Them
General | Posted 13 years agoYup. Penguins are dirty birds. They’re so bad that when their actions were recorded by early explorers, the findings were hidden from the public – to shield mankind from animal indecency. Even the explorer who journalized his findings was so uncomfortable with the topics that he encoded them in Greek! The only people who knew about these discoveries were a few selected scientists.
Fortunately, we live in the 21st century, so when someone goes through a box of old files and stumbles across a headline that says ‘the sexual habits of the adelie penguin, not for publication’ in large black type, we sit up and notice. Now the truth is out. Even in the Edwardian-era there were homosexuals, recreational sex, and sexual coercion amongst penguins. Apparently they beat their chicks on occasion and participated in necrophilia.
I found it amusing that the man who discovered this paper commented about the explorer who recorded the acts that he ‘falls into the trap in seeing penguins as bipedal birds and seeing them as little people. They’re not.’ Uh . . . sounds like people to me – not all people of course, but certainly a few come to mind who participate in some of these acts. Sure, not all people do these things as I’m sure not all penguins do either. Maybe the real problem is failing to see our own vices. Or perhaps it’s the inability to recognize the animal in ourselves.
So the gay penguins who were raising chicks (and it turns out there were a few different zoos that had gay penguins) was really nothing new. Some scientists still insist that the behavior was only because there weren’t enough females around, since some of the homosexual pairs broke up when more females were introduced. Maybe those penguins where gay for convenience, but I’m sure there are penguins that are gay because that’s how they swing. We’ll never really know until we can get inside a penguin’s mind. But I have a sneaking suspicion that there’s very little difference from us.
With another record of a species having sex for pleasure, if anyone feeds you that malarkey about only dolphins having sex for fun, there is something new to link them to. Animals like sex. If anyone has ever looked out their window and seen a pair of cats, dogs, squirrels, birds, foxes, etc going at it, you know that animals can get busy any time any place. Sex is fun! And even animals know it.
Not only do animals have sex for fun, but they also have sex outside their species. Most records are of mammals with mammals, birds with birds, etc, but if one poor penguin’s raped-by-seal story is anything to go on, animals will take it wherever they can get it. Even the scientists who witnessed this event didn’t believe it when they saw it. They thought the seal was eating the penguin. Because all seals eat penguins with their penis – right? *rolls eyes*
Perhaps we furries are ahead of our time? o.O

Han Solo'd by My Bird!
General | Posted 13 years agoSoren's been talking a lot these past couple of days. He's saying some of the clearest phases. Even as I type this he's all gibber jabber on the perch next to me. "What's this?", "Hello!", "Soren up.", "Say I love you." As well as his usual mumbled phrases that I can't quite hear.
It's so exciting hearing him talk this much. I knew he had it in him. ^^
This morning while he was enjoying his new-found voice I said, "I love you."
His immediate response: "I know."
Cheeky bugger! :p

The Fun of 'What If' Games and Picture Issues.
General | Posted 13 years agoI saw this on
swandog and followed a couple of chains. Afterward, I couldn't resist. I added #7, because all the originals I found left it out. I had to correct it. ^^
1. If your fursona had to be a primate, it'd be: a Lemur.
I love those tails. <3
2. If your fursona had to be a feline, it'd be: a Panther -- but since I'm a panther, I'd choose a Clouded Leopard.
Clouded Leopards have the neatest shaped spots.
3. If your fursona had to be a canine, it'd be: a Maned Wolf.
I love those long legs and the coloring.
4. If your fursona had to be a hoofed animal, it'd be: a White Andalusian Horse.
Those are the type of horses Ridley Scott used in the film Legend.
5. If your fursona had to be a rodent, it'd be: a Chinchilla.
It's such a fun word to say. That and I love how they roll around in sand to keep their fur soft and clean. ^^
6. If your fursona had to be an aquatic creature, it'd be: a Spotted Dolphin.
I was obsessed with spotted dolphins as a little girl. The passion inspired a woodworking friend of my parents to carve me a dolphin -- which I painted like a spotted one I found in a book. I still have that statue. ^^
7. If your fursona had to be reptile, it'd be: a Chameleon
I love their nifty eyes and those cute toes!
8. If your fursona had to be a marsupial, it'd be: a Thylacine.
By far my favorite marsupial ever!
9. If your fursona had to be a fish, it'd be: a Seahorse probably one that lives in coral reefs -- because those are so pretty.
If I ever had a tank I'd want it to have seahorses. My cousin is a genius when it comes to both fresh and salt water tanks, so I'd have someone to help me through the process. Maybe one day. I love seahorses. ^^
10. If your fursona had to be an amphibian, it'd be: a Poison Dart Frog.
Yeah. I love frogs. I also love the contrast of the bright neon colors against the blacks. I always wonder what poison dart frogs look like to each other. I know many birds see more colors than we do. Like blacks have more colors than just black. So I always wonder about frogs.
11. If your fursona had to be an avian/bird, it'd be: a White-Faced Owl. They're from Africa.
They are gorgeous! They also partially inspired the look of Caly in my Aello story.
Normally I'd say that a Great Bird of Paradise would be my bird of choice – but only the males are breathtaking. That's the sucky thing with the bird world, too many birds that have ugly colored fems. So then if I was a Great Bird of Paradise, I'd be a herm. :p
12. If your fursona had to be a creepy crawly, it'd be: an Orchid Mantis.
Beautiful and deadly -- especially since I'm a girl. Watch out boys I'll chew you up (for the sex)! Mantids are so weird.
13. If your fursona had to be a hybrid, it'd be: a melanistic Clouded Leopard, Maned Wolf, Unicorn, Owl.
Body and spots of the clouded leopard, long legs and fluffy tail of the maned wolf (but a long and cat-like), the horn and hoofed toes of a unicorn, wings and extra ear feathers of the white-faced owl.
14. If your fursona had to be a mythical creature, it'd be: a Winged Panther -- but since I'm already one, I'd either be a gryphon or a dragon.
I'd actually toyed with creating a gryphon 'sona and a dragon 'sona early on when I first joined the fandom.
15. If your fursona had to be a Pokémon, it'd be: a Pikachu.
Yeah . . . I have a thing for pikachu. Yes, I was . . . am . . . a pikachu fangirl. I have quite a collection of pikachu stuff. I'm bad.
16. If your fursona had to be a plant, it'd be: an Orchid.
I'd probably make up my own colors, because orchids are awesome. I'd also get to make a moth species to go with my orchid -- because without moths there are no orchids. I'd make a big beautiful one, one that I wouldn't be afraid of. I wish I wasn't afraid of moths.
What would you be? If you fill this out, let me know and I'll give it a read. ^^

In regards to pictures, I'm not sure if I can post them. Nothing that we took pictures of is something we made, and since it was a public event there are lots of random people in many of them. There are the big cat pictures. Those I could easily crop out the people.
Currently, I don't have a Photobucket or Tumblr, mainly because I don't often take many pictures, so I don't know how worthwhile it would be to open one just to post pictures for the Ren Faire. I'm sure there will probably come a time when we'll take more pictures, but I don't know how frequent that would be.
I don't know. What do you guys think? Should I open one of those photo site accounts, or is it okay to post those photos here, or do I need to do lots of cropping?
Thanks.

Ren Faire Recap
General | Posted 13 years agoThe Ren Faire is awesome.
crowchild and I spent this Saturday at the local Ren Faire with
etheweasel
immortalpanda and
white-dragon-nl. I haven’t been to the Ren Faire in . . . 6 or so years. I used to work there for the Rocky Mountain Raptor Center as a bird handler, but since I don’t volunteer there anymore, I haven’t had an opportunity to go back. It was also Crow’s first trip to our Ren Faire. Again, it was awesome! Crow was partially attached to the camera the entire time. I told him that I never remember to take pictures, so Crow took charge of capturing the moment. Also, he’s so much taller than me, and he can see things I’d usually miss.
Unfortunately we both got pretty sunburned. Not everywhere, just around the shirt line -- which sucks, because we both put extra around those areas. Oh well. Neither of us wanted to wear T-shirts and end up with a T-shirt tan, so we’re dealing with the aftermath. Thank you burn spray!
Mostly we went for the shows, and a turkey leg. Also, it’s nice to case the Faire for goodies to buy next year. Since we’re broker than all heck, we were great browsers. ^^ Show-wise we saw a couple rounds of “Puke and Snot”, “Cast in Bronze”, and “The Endangered Cat Show”.
I’ll admit . . . I came for the cats. I could have stayed for all the cat shows -- but that’s mostly because the cat show has multiple cats, but only so many come out for each show. Because you can’t make cats do something they don’t want. Still, we caught a great one. We got to see a leopard, a panther and a cinnamon white tiger (cinnamon because her stripes were tan instead of black)! Yayness! The treat was the panther, since the announcer didn’t expect him to come out. He’d rolled around in hay so you couldn’t see his spots well -- but you can in the videos Crow took. It was so awesome to see those big cats interacting with their handler. The guy did come out a bit bloodied on his arm.
At the end we got to go up close to the tiger. I’ll post pictures, because she is gorgeous! While we were ooing and ahing over the tiger, E slipped off and bought me a panther plush! Thank you E! I <3s him so much! This is my first big cat plush ever (my mom has issues with buying stuffed animals at zoos, museums and events). He’s the coolest panther doll I’ve ever seen! His fur is variegated to suggest the spots. *does a happy dance*
Now if I could only get over this sunburn . . . ow. I still sting in places, but I'll be fine. I grew up in the desert, I've been burned worse before. My muscles are doing better considering we walked all day and only sat down toward the end. Got a little stiff from sitting on the ground, but I think that stretching before we started our day really helped.
It was cool to meet White and ImmortalPanda, too. I always love meeting new people, especially when I’ve been watching Panda’s art for years, and never knew how close they were.
Overall it was a great day. We got a lot of sun, good exercise, met some cool people, saw awesome animals, great costumes, listened to wonderful music, and had tasty eats. Wonderfully superb day. Pictures will follow. Just have to get them off the camera.

Next Chapter and Updates
General | Posted 13 years agoI've posted the first part of Ch 2 in Aello: Love Soars. It's only the first part, because Ch 2 is long. I ended in a natural break in the chapter, and only one more day has passed. There's more mythology and a glimpse of other races found in this world. More reveals on that in Ch 3. I'm pretty far into Ch 3 but it's not ready to be released yet.
Lately I've been feeling a bit under the weather, so I'm taking it easy. Everything's fine, I've just been really stiff and sore lately. I just find it so odd, since I seldom get these pains over the summer. At least it's more tolerable than in winter.
I still have two short stories I'm rewriting in the hopes to sell to a couple of magazines. Now that the first part of "Love Soars" is up, I can get back into my schedule and get them finished. In order to get "Love Soars" ready to post, I focused largely on its edits. Edits always get me hyped up.
While I work on all these projects, I still have the next few Bestiary stories floating around in my head. So don't think I've forgotten the bigger picture . . . I'm just absorbed in a world of feathers, owls and sex.
Thanks to all my new watchers and readers. I really appreciate you all for sticking with me through all of this. You guys are awesome! ^^

Latest Reads
General | Posted 13 years agoI'll admit, Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy (donated to me by Goldedge) has absorbed much of my reading time lately. I'm rather surprised how much I've enjoyed it. Generally speaking, I'm not into apocalyptic dystopias, or political stories. But the Mistborn books are good despite all that. I've I have some issues with it, but overall I've found the story intriguing, and the magic system is very well thought out and fascinating. It's also had some really unexpected twists that I never expected. I love it when a book can surprise me. Goldedge has given me a couple other books to read as well. Thanks, Goldedge, for the books! You've made this bibliophile very happy. *^^*
It's a nice change to have something to read outside of my critiquing groups and the fandom. It's great to read something for the fun of it and take my critiquing hat off.
Granted, I still see issues, and whenever I get bored or frustrated with particular passages, I use it for later reflection on why I didn't like it. It's a great way to work on my own writing by learning what the mainstream authors are publishing. Every writer has strengths and weaknesses. Even my favorites do things that make me roll my eyes (I even threw one of their books once). But despite some issues here and there, I'm really enjoying the Mistborn Trilogy. I got the first book about a month ago, and now I'm cracking open the third.
I've also gotten a copy of 120 Days of Sodom, one of Marquis de Sade's more infamous works. The Libertine lifestyle in that era has piqued my interest since college (more specifically after reading The Story of O), and de Sade's work is a fascinating (although sometimes disturbing) look at a mindset and lifestyle totally foreign to me. I've always liked to see things from other's viewpoints. Particularly fetishes and desires I don't understand.
As I grew into an adult, and my introduction to psychology (both classes and therapists), I've found fetishes and sexuality very interesting. Probably one of my initial draws to the seedier side of the fandom. That and I'm too curious for my own good. Sometimes, it's very obvious why my fursona is predominately feline. ^^
It's nice to finally see a copy that isn't in French -- since I can't read French. I also have a thing for satire, and de Sade loved his satire.
Thanks so much for reading.

Story Updates
General | Posted 13 years agoThere were quite a few folks here who nudged me toward editing Chapter 2 of Aello, and posting the first part for everyone to read. I'm just about done so you should see it in the next couple of days. I figured I'd just give a heads up for what's to come. There's still lots more to go in Aello -- but I'm having fun with it, so it's a pleasure to work on. I've got the rest of the remaining chapters planned out, and all the characters solidified. I'm pleased with how it's coming along. Hopefully you'll enjoy reading as much as I've enjoyed writing. ^^
I do wish I could write faster. It's not so much getting the story down, it's more of the editing side that I stress over. I'm always over-examining things, second guessing myself, and fiddling with sentence structure and pacing. Of course, quality over quantity is best, but I used to write so much faster. I could whip out a ten page paper in under an hour. Yes, paper writing is different to story writing, and I've become faster than I used to be, but it's still something I hope to improve on.
The funny thing is, after I overcome one issue a new one pops up. Writing is so curious that way. I wonder what new issue I'll try to improve on in ten years time. I know I'll always be learning. Every new story I write teaches me something new.
To all my new watchers and readers: Thanks so much for your votes, faves and feedback! There's so many of you whose stories I'd love to read to return the favor. Eventually I'll get to you all.
Take care every one! Next journal is a bit of a book review. ^^

Unavoidable Downtime and Recovery
General | Posted 13 years agoMy internets went down for repairs this past week, and it's now restored. Huzzah! Almost five days without internet was . . . odd. I did experience a bit of internet exhaustion, so I spent some time sleeping. But I did get a fair amount of editing and rewrites in with a bit of Skyrim.
I've never really played much of the Elder Scrolls series, but I did have lots of friends who did. I used to watch them play Oblivion around the time it came out. Crow and I have had lots of fun playing together. I've never been much for the combat part . . . but this new character we've created is quite fun. I'm actually playing all on my own. What's even cooler, is I haven't died yet. Granted, I'm too chicken to take on certain activities, but I'm wandering the world now and battling the wildlife -- which is more than I used to do. I've enjoyed our vacations in Tamriel. We don't do it often, so it's always nice to have the opportunity.
Because of all the downtime, I came back with a huge journal post that I looked at and said . . . too long. So I decided to break it up into a couple of updates. Hopefully the internet issues we've had over the last year will be a thing of the past. All the above ground wires are now underground, where storms can't effect them.
Now that we're back, I'll be Livestreaming with Crow again. I don't usually post when we're streaming to my journal, since most of you follow Crow anyway -- so you know when we're streaming. The other reason is his Livestreams have nothing to do with writing. But if you'd like to stop by and see what Crow's working on or say hello, you're welcome to join -- as long as you're 18+.

Later's all. The next journal is about my next story.

Lady Boners and Other Stories
General | Posted 13 years agoI have always had a big lady boner for Jason Marsden.
Who is this person who can get this winged panther so giddy -- you might ask yourselves? Just the greatest voice actor ever (imo)-- and if not the greatest he's at least been in some awesome projects. Most people don't know him by name, but they usually know his roles.
You may remember him as the voice of Thakery Binx in Hocus Pocus, Kovu from Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, Max Goof from the Goofy Movies, and Haku in Spirited away. He's been in others. So many voices. ^^ Back in the 90's he also made appearances in the TGIF shows of the day: Boy Meets World, Full House and Step By Step. I actually saw him up close during a taping of Boy Meets World that I was lucky enough to get to see (lucky because technically I wasn't old enough to participate in a live screening, but my mom had a friend in the industry -- an evil lady btw -- but that's another story).
He's also in quite a few video games. Skyrim is the current one that comes to mind. Check his IMDB and you'll begin to see that he's been everywhere. I'm crossing my fingers for him to get something in the new ThunderCats -- because he and Will Friedle are old school buddies and they often work on projects together.
*EDIT* He IS in the latest ThunderCats. *Does a happy dance* I can't wait to see the latest episode now! Am I surprised he's in an episode that Will Friedle directed? Nope. Guessed that one. ^^
Every time he shows up in a movie I get all fan girl squealy. I can recognize his voice anywhere. And he's yummy -- I don't care that he's two inches taller than me -- I still swoon. Yeah, I'm bad, but at least I know and accept that about myself.
Now that I've hopefully got your attention with my lady boner story, on to writing topics.
I've gotten over 10k done on Love Soars -- the next Harpy Love story inspired by Aello in The Bestiary. Since I'm only to the halfway point, what would you, my readers, think of me running an edit of the first half of Love Soars, and post it for you to read, while I continue to write the second part? Or do you want to wait for me to finish part two to post?
Let me know and I'll tweak my schedule if needed.
On top of the Bestiary stories, I'm working on edits for two shorter stories I'm planning to sell to fandom 'zines. I also help host
crowchild's Livestreams when I'm not writing, editing or critiquing. So my plate sounds a bit full, but it's scattered and manageable.
Also, if you're ever in the mood for some great otter stories, totally check out
lei-lani for some awesome underwater otter lovin'! Since most of my readers prefer the straight stories, hers are definitely ones to check out.
TTFN,
Tyvara
P.S. Thanks to all my new watchers and readers. I'm so grateful to have you here. To my regular readers: You rock the hardcore! Your encouragement gives me strength during the ebb of writing's flow.

Delays with Progress
General | Posted 13 years agoI've been working on the next part of Aello entitled: Love Soars. I'd be further, had I not realized the beginning needed expansion -- but it's so worth it. Love Soars has a bit more sex in it. Though, I'm expecting Part Three to have more. Yes, while I'm working on Love Soars, I'm working on outlines for both Part Three and Four.
I'm also working on rewriting an older story that I'm planning to send out to one of the fandom presses for possible publication. The story needed a lot of love, as it's quite old, and my style now has evolved greatly since then. At least I'm noticing the glaring errors for what they are. It's a lot of character development and rewriting the sex, but this is the other thing taking up my time.
For those of you who've caught me on the Livestream with Crowchild, that's why I've been a bit distracted and silent.
Under pressure from multiple people, I've been working on an Amazon wish list. I've always felt a bit odd about asking for donations for my writing, and with Alertpay having complications and Paypal being evil, I've opted for a wish list instead. Looking over it, I realize how much of a dork I am. Most of my list are things that make me want to write more, or encourage that environment. Either way, once that's all done, I'll make links available for anyone interested.
Thanks again to all my watchers and readers. Welcome to all the new faces. I appreciate you stopping by and giving my stories a read.

And it's Done!
General | Posted 14 years agoTook a while, but I went an named all The Bestiary stories. Huzzah! It needed to be done, and I'm glad I did it.
Now I'll return to working on the next part of Aello.
Thanks so much for reading. ^^

Owning My Work
General | Posted 14 years agoSince moving on with The Bestiary, I've decided to go back and give names to all the older stories I've written. I read somewhere that you should try to name your story as early as you can. Own it. Claim it. Since I've been a bad writer -- I've decided to go back and remedy that oversight. Also, I think it'll be easier for readers to differentiate between stories if they have titles.
Throughout the next few days, I'll be going through my stories and retitling them. I haven't settled on names for all of them, so any that don't have a '--' are in need of a title. Whomever of my readers that have title ideas for the stories you liked, then I'd love to hear them. With 15 stories left unnamed, it'd be really helpful to have some extra ideas to build from. If I choose yours, or use it for inspiration, then I'll give you a mention in the submission notes.
***As a note, when I'm debating names for stories, I tend to favor titles that reflect the overall story in some way. I'm not a fan of titles that have nothing to do with the story.
Thanks for reading, commenting, favorite-ing and all the other wonderful feedback you all give. I appreciate everything you contribute. It makes my day. ^^

Finished! Moving on. @#$% YEAH!
General | Posted 14 years agoMy latest Bestiary story is up, and I'm already onto the next one. After all those dark thoughts brought about by the last story, I'm reveling in the next creature.
The first five stories of The Bestiary are up on SoFurry, if you'd care to take a peak at how reading stories over there is, and let me know what you think or if you have a preference. I still plan to continue posting here on FA, but I'd love to know your opinions.
If you've read my latest story Adlet and would like something a bit lighter, I'd been thinking about the old Disney short Ben and Me a while back, and found it online, so I thought I'd share.

New Stuff for the New Year!
General | Posted 14 years agoThe Chinese New Year is upon us! Welcome Year of the Water Dragon! As a rat sign, I look forward to the blessings of a compatible animal year.
So I didn't win the contest, but I'm back to work on The Bestiary. Yay!
Since SoFurry is out of Beta, I'm going to be posting The Bestiary there and do my part to help sus out the bugs. I'm really excited about the site. I've been using it since Toumal gave the go ahead to switch over, and now that it's the main site, it's exciting to see the re-lauch a reality.
Just because I'm posting on SoFurry doesn't mean I won't post here. I'm just mirroring things. I also feel it gives you, the reader, the option of choosing how you want to read my stories. Decide for yourselves what you like.
In order to not bog SoFurry down with the 23 stories I wrote last year, I'll be posting The Bestiary once a week until it is caught up with FA. Until then, FA will have the most recent weekly story, but eventually the two sites will catch up with each other.
My decision to post once a week is so I don't get overwhelmed. One day, I'd like to be able to do one entry a day, but I'm not there yet. With luck, perseverance and a butt-ton of practice, I will reach that goal.
This week is a rewrite of Aardvark. Link here! The first time I wrote it I was in a very 'human' head space, and since SoFurry has rules about human only stories I decided to bring out the furry in it. I probably could have posted the original, but I really wanted to give it a try. Word to the wise -- it's complicated. I wanted to maintain the same feel of the original, but have it make sense in an animal-centric universe. I decided to go with hybrids, because I haven't written much about them and thought it would be an interesting exercise. It required a bit of world building, but it's something I'm sure I can use for future stories.
I took a queue from the English concept of degeneration which suggests that a person's value can go up or down depending on who and how they marry. For my world, a creature's status is determined by the types of species they display. Birds are the genetically untrustworthy ones, because, if you've ever worked or been around lots of birds, you know they can be tricky SOB's. I'm sure many have a story of the bird that always knows when your car's just been washed -- so they can shit on it. Birds are crafty, and self serving. There are even lots of dastardly birds in most myths.
As many of you know I own two parrots -- I love birds. Heck, Kuarri, my Quaker, insisted on sitting with me while I wrote most of it. His input (screams) probably fueled some bird hate. But just because I love them doesn't mean I see past their . . . quirks -- or put them on a pedestal like they can do no wrong. That and I wanted to try writing about baddies that weren't blanketed carnivores. It was fun finding all the ways birds are bad. I can see how some people could really hate birds.
Many thanks to
orange04's awesome hybrid artwork, which was a huge inspiration in visualizing characters. That girl does some absolutely lovely hybrids. Browse her gallery -- they are full of awesome!
Also a big thanks to all my new watchers! I really appreciate your interest in my stories. I'm so behind in my thank you's, it's become daunting. But know that I'm so glad you're here. Your support is part of the fuel that keeps these projects alive.

Christmas Wishes and Presents
General | Posted 14 years agoYay the roof is fixed! They came in a day before it snowed and took care of it all. Further, they did an excellent job! After covering everything to protect the floor and walls while they worked and it all got done early in the morning. They cleaned the floor afterward -- I never heard a vacuum so they must have picked everything up by hand. All that needs to happen now is for the guy to return to pick up his ladder. All in all, I'm happy.
Still can't move anything back into the living room. I'm not sure if they'll really clean the carpets, but either way, it's not like the floor is damaged or anything. The only real problem was the roof, and that's fixed. It would be nice to move the birds back into the living room, though. More to have the space in my room back because they've been pretty good. When the lights go out, they go to sleep.
In awesome news: My latest story is finished!
I'll be running through the last of edits and get it posted for you all to have a read. It's an erotic tale, but at 12000+ words there should be plenty of story to keep you engaged beyond the nitty gritty.

zsisron Hypnosis Story Contest
In the meantime here's a teaser for my novella All in the Mind:
Throughout Kitra's entire adult life, she's been the only fruit bat soaring the skies as a courier, and despite her skill and elite clients, the bulk of her time is spent alone. Eager to return home and begin her vacation, she attempts to avoid an oncoming storm, but is blown to a distant island she's never seen before. With no place to go she must weather out the storm. But her refuge is inhabited. Can Kitra hold her own, or will she succumb to the magical wiles of the island's ancient resident?
The dragon, Ryx's, curse left him trapped in the caves of a remote island for longer than he can remember. In fact, Ryx can't remember much of anything thanks to a wizard's spell. His only chance for escape is through whatever lineage he can make with the females that wash ashore. Luckily for Ryx, the wizard left his hypnotic powers intact, and wooing shipwrecked damsels into parting their legs doesn't take much effort. To afford his progeny a greater chance at a happy childhood, he must convince his partners that they want what he plans to do to them. Can Ryx convince his latest visitor to throw caution to the wind, or has the wizard's spell warped his memories into lies? Can he maintain control without loosing more of his mind?
I hope everyone who celebrates holidays this time of year had a great time. I wish you all a Happy New Year.
A big thanks to all my new watchers and readers. I get a bit behind with thank you's -- and some of you hate getting them -- still, I want you all to know how much I appreciate you watching and reading. It really means the world to me. Thank you.
Happy Holidays!

About that Roof . . .
General | Posted 14 years agoStill a big ass hole in it. Since my last journal there have been two industrial fans blowing upward in an attempt to dry out the wood so the workers could repair the damage. Probably would be easier if it wasn't frosting over almost every night. We had to move everything out of the livingroom. So now we have a nearly empty half of the house while the two parrots, Crow, I and two computers squish into our bedroom, so that the rest of our house can be shoved into any vacant space remaining. I feel like I've fallen into the junkyard in Labyrinth.
The repair crew keeps dropping off materials too. Drywall, insulation, a ladder, trash cans. Considering no serious repair work has been done (stupid snow and its cursed wetness), it's disheartening, though it is a nice opportunity to check out the materials they'll be using in the repairs. At least we're upgrading in that respect.
Needless to say, it's been an interesting week. At least they took away the fans this morning. Those dang things are super loud. So loud it makes the floor vibrate from EVERY room in the house. The vibration part I don't mind so much, but that constant blowing is like living inside a jet engine. Another reason it's nice to be in the bedroom -- we can close the door to block out the deafening fans.
I am so glad those are gone. They've been blowing for so long, every time I leave the room I'm shocked by how quiet it is. I can once again hear sounds coming from OUTSIDE the apartment now! Woo Hoo!
Fortunately my desk is small (like me) and it's been wheeled into a corner where I'm out of the way and can write. There WILL be a story before this month is out! It is happening. I'm determined.
Since I've gotten on that topic, I should get back to it. I'm very close to finishing this next story. It's so close I can see the end of it -- almost taste it (if tasting thoughts were possible).
I can't believe the year's almost over! I'm excited to see what next year will bring.
Happy Holidays to all you wonderful watchers and readers out there!

The Drip that Became a Skylight.
General | Posted 14 years agoSo we're working on projects in the living room, and I hear this funny sound -- like a rodent digging in a pile. Since we have no rodents (other than the bugger who passes through our kitchen -- conveniently ignoring all the traps set out for him) I begin to panic.
Crow goes over to check it out. Turns out it's a steady drip from the ceiling.
We call up the emergency crew, and now we have a huge gaping hole overhead. This one little tiny drip revealed itself to be the monstrosity that takes up the front corner of the living room. The repair guys brought up a big trashcan to catch the dripping. There's lots of dripping.
Everything and everyone is fine. We caught it before it became something really bad. Fortunately the apartment covers roof issues, and we may even get a free carpet clean out of the ordeal. It will however take up maybe three days of our time. But for a hole in the roof in the beginning of winter, it certainly could be worse.
Probably should get back to writing. I doubt I'll be able to write sex scenes with a repair crew patching a hole in the roof within viewing distance. Might as well get in as much writing as I can while the house is our own.
Crow has the more interesting time trying to cover up the game.
Damn are we weird.
At least we're having a blast being weird. ^^

So I said I'd be done in November, right?
General | Posted 14 years agoWRONG!
Man do I suck at time management around this time of year. I try to be better at it, and every year, I think I get a bit better at it. At least I hope I do. I always have to deal with winter and the aches and pains that go with it since my surgery and the onset of arthritis. But enough down time seems to do the trick. My hands are also doing better. I think one day Crow and I may move to a warmer state, with a lower altitude. I mean, if this is what it's like for me in my 20's, I weep for the elderly who live here.
Either way, this side project I started is turning out longer than I'd anticipated, and the deadline has been extended, so I'm taking more time with it. I don't often write this topic, but I've played with it to make it more my own, and I'm really enjoying it.
Still planing on jumping back into The Bestiary; it's a fun project. I just kinda wrote myself into an uncomfortable story, and it's been quite a relief to work on something different. Every time I open that magical creatures book, my mind goes into its own world. There are just so many stories I want to write. Eventually I'll get to all of them.
I hope everyone who celebrates it had a great Thanksgiving. Crow and I bought a nice cheep hamhock and made slow-cooker split pea soup. Well, I made the soup; Crow lugged the gigantic hunk of pig butt home from the store which can be a feat since we don't have a car and the store is a hike to get to (but the end result was worth it). There was so much ham it mad two rounds of split pea soup. I'm not big into soup, but homemade split pea and ham is one of my faves.
At this time there's no real plans for the Christmas/Winter season other than work on projects and help with HTH stuff. With any luck and some perseverance on my part, there should be some new stories before the year is out. ^^
A big thanks to all my new watchers and readers, and another thank you to all those who continue to stick around through these slow spells. I appreciate you all.
Best wishes to you for a wonderful holiday season. ^^

Dragon Trumps Pain
General | Posted 14 years agoSome of you may already know, but for those of you who don't, the changing seasons really mess with me body wise, and issues manifest in a variety of ways. All of which results in me being unable to write until the pain improves, or subsides. This year unlike those before, I have many options available to me.
Currently, I am writing this with the help of my Dragon speech to text program, because of the pain I've been experiencing in my shoulders, arms and hands, but I'm tired of waiting for things to be perfect. If I waited for everything to be perfect, I'd never get anything done. As a way to warm up to using my Dragon program again, I've decided to practice on an FA journal, and catch up on my thank you notes to all my watchers.
Using my Dragon program is a little tricky, because you have to think of the sentence you intend to say before you actually say it. When I type, I usually type the words as they come to me, but in order for the program to understand and spell words correctly, or even take words in context, I have to use full sentences or the program gets confused. It also has a setting that puts in all the grammar correctly, but that also requires that you know exactly what you're saying before you say it, and I'm still not there yet.
Overall it's a really useful program, once you've gotten used to it – and this time around it's a lot easier to use, probably because the program is used to my voice and accent by now – which I didn't realize was so difficult to understand (apparently Southern Californian and Coloradan don't make an easy accent mix for computers to grasp). The other thing that's helpful, is that the room I'm using isn't really tiny, nor does it act as a resonance chamber like my last room – so that's a plus. It's also become really handy since my mouse is kind of dying and the click doesn't actually click very well – but Dragon has a solution for that, so no more unnecessary stretching or reaching whenever I need to use the left click button.
During this downtime I haven't just been sitting around (if I don't do something creative I start go insane), I've mainly been doing mental gymnastics to keep all of my thoughts in order, and not forget anything since I can't write anything down. Over the weeks, I've been able to get to know the characters in my latest story a lot better than I probably would have otherwise. It's been really tricky only working on the things I can memorize. I can't really work on dialogue, because that's the easiest for me to forget. When I write dialogue, I'm all in the moment and I have to write it as fast as I can before the moment is gone. Mostly, I've been focusing on visualizing the environment and the characters, trying to see them as best as I can so I can describe them later on.
I am still planning on continuing the Bestiary project, I just really need to work on something that's a little happier for a while. There're lots of other stories in the encyclopedia that I'd like to write, but the OCD in me just won't let me move on until I finished the last one. I never abandoned projects, that's just not my style. Sometimes it takes me a little longer to complete a project, but it's never abandoned.
A big thanks to all my new watchers, readers, and commenters, it's so exciting to have you here and I hope I can continue to bring you stories that you'll want to read.

Moving On and Watchers
General | Posted 14 years agoI've picked up on my writing, which is always good news.
The latest Bestiary story really makes me feel like crap while I'm writing. Sometimes I feel like I'm a 'method writer', like a method actor -- but with words. The next creature is asking for a really dark story, and it makes me go into a really sick place. It reminds me of a time of my life that I don't want to relive. The problem is, writers write what we know, so I'm using what I've got -- it just isn't fun to go back to that person and those emotions.
Then I realized: This is a prompt project! Prompts are for jump-starting your inspiration, not to be stymied by them. So I'm taking a break from that story to enter a contest with an approaching deadline. I don't want to mention which one at this time, it'll be more of a surprise that way. The outline and first draft are already underway, so it's progressing nicely so far. And it's much more light-hearted and sexy -- so my frown is turning upside-down. ^^ Plus, there's some weirdness so that's always fun.
I'm still working on edits for a few other stories. And I've been fiddling with the rewrites of Aardvark to make it more furry. I've got the ideas, it's all about dragging them out of my head and turning them into readable sentences.

Now to you:
Thanks so much to all my watchers! I still can't believe there are over six hundred of you looking at my stuff. I know some are here because of High Tail Hall, and I have a few advertisements through the game and livestream; but what is it that you're sticking around for? Whatever your reasons, I'd love to hear them.
Since there seem to be readers out there reading my stories, I've been wondering what you all would like to read, what you wish I did more of, or which story I should revisit and/or revise.
I've seen all those art memes running around, and that's probably what got me into this line of thought. I suppose if I want a writer one, I'd have to just custom it to my needs. Any thoughts? Would a meme with direct questions be better than my fairly vague question embedded in the paragraph?
Also: These are artists that I absolutely love, that need more love. If you're not watching them, you should -- because they are awesome.
vickywyman She did comics in the 80's, and her art is still wonderful. Her style's got a fun naughty-toon look. She also does lots of fantasy creatures and things with wings.
mearu Love how she does fur, and steampunk themes. She also chooses some interesting and unique species for subjects.
tatchit Really awesome wolves and feathers. I like their use of color and the sharp angles of their lines and strokes.
thaily I really dig the frogs. Also they have a very dreamlike style to some of their pieces.
sarah-grey She does quite a bit of work with tea-staining and other traditional media which is so cool, plus her art is very lovely. She has a very Asian style which compliments the staining rather nicely. Her work is so pretty and flowy.
maggock Love her birds. Words can't describe how much I love the parrots she draws. She really captures the essence that is bird. I plan to save up for commissions of my parrots one of these days.
meglyman She's doing wedding stuff atm, but she'll be back. Watch her, she's worth waiting for. Her art is amazing and full of cephalopods. She works in gouache and does wonderful commissions (there's a picture of me as a squid floating around her gallery, that lives in my writing room). Love her stuff.
ultraviolet This girl needs more love. I've always been a fan of hers, and she may not be posting much at the moment, but go through her gallery and see what lovely arts she has. If you like her stuff, fave it and leave her a comment, she's such a nice girl and needs to know how fantastic her work is. Her style and use of color have always been one of my faves -- she also likes dark fantasy themes and creatures.
Thanks again for watching, and commenting. You are awesome, and I appreciate whatever feedback I get. There are more stories on the way.

Stress and Fail -- but it could always be worse.
General | Posted 14 years agoThings be crazy for this winged panther, and I'm not the best at dealing with multiple levels of stress. It's something I've been attempting to manage since I was young, but whatever, you gotta play the hand you're dealt.
One of the bigger setbacks has been the passing of the first-year reunion of my expulsion and ostracism from my family. I'm not talking just parents here, I'm talking everyone. The only people I speak to (and with no regularity) is my father, and sister. The only one who is remotely supportive is my father. The reasons for my banishment from the family cirlce revolves around my narcissistic mother and sociopath stepdad, and their amazing ability to spout endless lies about me. I guess that's what I get for being the black sheep, lies are easier to believe than the truth in these instances.
It's not a big surprise that they don't get it; I'm the only creative soul in my family. I do have a cousin who writes, but he's just as much of a black sheep as me. Really, all I can do is keep in contact with the other family pariahs and continue to live my life. However, there's still pain in the loss of understanding and acceptance from one's own family. It's not just about the fact that they are gone, but the damage they wrought while they were still around. It's a lengthy history of mental garbldigook to go through. Some days are easier than others, but it's hard not to think about it at times. I'm glad I had a lot of therapy through my school years. It has given me the tools to sort out these personal issues.
Overall, I'm glad that they've decided to leave me alone, because now I no longer have to deal with their lack of understanding and unrealistic demands on my life. This makes me happy. I'd rather have people in my life that support me and love me for who I am, not the person I pretend to be. If it means loosing a few family members who obviously never cared, then so be it. I don't need their presence in my life -- because they sure as hell weren't supportive. I have an entire fandom full of people to befriend, not to mention all those I've made among writing circles.
In regards to writing, I still am, it's just coming out slower than I'd like. This next Bestiary story is also going to be longer, probably around the 5000 word mark. Lots more character development and story buildup before anything gets too dark, but it makes the world all the more richer for the extra detail. Granted, I've been doing a bit more research than I intended to allow myself when I began this project, but sometimes research is a necessity so that the final product actually makes sense. After skimming ahead a bit in the book, I'm looking forward to finishing this one, so I can continue to write new stories and explore different ideas.
I've also been editing some of the older stories in my gallery. My skills have developed since I released them, and I'd like to have that reflected in those older works. As I finish those edits I'll post them, linking to the original in scraps.
I'd really hoped to have more posted in August, but life doesn't always work out the way we plan. Damn plans and cursed self expectations! Oh well, I have a long life of writing ahead of me, and it's all a process. I'm glad that this is the path I've chosen, because I chose it, no one decided it for me. One thing I've learned from all my years of writing thus far is that failure is a necessity -- unwanted, but necessary to grow. Without making mistakes we can't learn from them, and I expect to make more before I'm old and grey.
Thanks so much to all my new watchers! I got behind in my responses to you, but then, there are many of you who don't like to get those thank you shouts in your shoutbox, so I'm probably making a few people happy by my delay.
Regardless, thank you all for watching, reading and commenting. I value your presence here, because without you, I'm just some crazy chick banging away at her computer. Having readers completes the writing process for me, and I'm so fortunate you're all willing to follow me along as I develop.

Edits for a New Site!
General | Posted 14 years agoSince the plans for a SoFurry 2.0 beta have been discussed, I've been debating uploading my stories there. I started at Yiffstar, and that was my home. The shift to SoFurry disheartened me. I uploaded a few stories, but I really didn't like the new site. Now that the new beta is launched, I'm so excited and can't wait to start uploading. Of course, since it's a beta, I'm perfectly content to wait until it's no longer a beta (and I have no idea when that may be). But I'm excited.
Because SoFurry has stricter regulations for posting stories, I'm going through The Bestiary to see which stories are too human, and making them more furry. A Bao A Qu was the first to get altered. While I was in there mucking around, I couldn't help edit some of the more vague or confusing parts of the story. Hopefully the updates will make it a bit easier to follow.

Aardvark will be the next to get a touch of furry. I've been percolating ideas for the endeavor, and plan to work on that soon. Depending on how long it takes for the new SF to launch, I may edit a couple of other stories.
In the meantime, the next Bestiary story is a bit slow to come out (one of the reasons I did some editing). It's just creepy, and sometimes it's hard to get in the right mindset. It's fun because it's challenging. I've never done a story like this so I'm trying to pull from what dystopian dark themes I'm familiar with, and go from there.
Thanks to everyone who reads, and an extra thanks to those who comment. I appreciate the effort you take to let me know what you think.
Hugs and loves to all my watchers. Wow! I'm over 500 now. Thanks for showing interest in my stories.

Finished, now for the next one.
General | Posted 14 years agoYay! Finished M.I.L.F. with Milk. That was fun, now on to the next one. ^^ *does a happy dance*
I've had the story for this next one in my mind for a while now. It's darker than Aditi, and I don't know how long it will take me. I don't typically write horror, but every now and then something dark sticks in my head. This is one of those times.
In random news: We have a ladybug hiding out in our bedroom while it molted. It's so completely covered in spots that it looks almost black from far away. Because ladybugs are just awesome, we've let it wander around our room. Its hanging out on the cord for the blinds, chillin', bein' a bug.
Thanks for reading, commenting and watching!

Slow times -- mild ranting.
General | Posted 14 years agoI've been working on the next Bestiary story all week. It's getting closer to completion, but it's still not there yet. It's going to be a longer story -- around 5000 words, which is still a short story, but longer than my average 1200 for the Bestiary stories. I'm enjoying writing it, but I wish it would come out faster.
I'm always concerned with my speed. I used to be able to write a six-page paper in under an hour (way back in high school). Sadly, stories aren't like papers -- well they are, but they're not -- not mentally anyway (literally it's all writing). Stories come from a deeper part. To reach in and scoop out emotions to put on the page is daunting, but gratifying to an extent. Gratifying because it's rewarding to get the images and emotions out of my head, and into word form. Daunting, because it's freaking' hard. The fear only intensifying, because all these Bestiary stories are essentially first drafts. Much like a newborn baby, sometimes they come out kinda . . . unfinished -- and there's a lot of fear in displaying that imperfection for the world to see.
Still, I remind myself constantly that there is no perfect first draft, despite how much my inner editor would love to believe -- frankly, I suspect that there's no perfect anything, since perfection is subjective -- but now I've gone off on a tangent. I can't be perfect. All I can do is try, write, and edit to the best of my abilities, then see what happens. That's half the intention behind the Bestiary project: to push myself to try more. I plan to write stories for all of the entries. No matter what, that's years of prompts, and that's fine by me, I want to stay busy, regardless of how long it takes.
I also want to do other things, and because I haven't been writing this much in years, I'm not used to it, and I've utterly failed at time management. The first two weeks went by well, but by the third, I felt drained. Part of this I blame on women’s troubles, which make me sleepy and paranoid, and ridiculously self conscious. But I was really over doing it before PMS even hit me.
Every morning, I would sit in my office working without breakfast or beverage, and push myself until the story came out. Problem is, afterward, I couldn't do anything else -- as if I had slit open a wrist and bled all over the keyboard. And the draining built up, until I was sufficiently wiped out. Short term, the tactic worked, but long term . . . well, I'm just going to have to figure out a better way to organize my time, because this crash sucks.
Oh well, this is all a learning process. Hopefully the wait will be worthwhile. Either way, I'm enjoying writing it. It's an erotic escapade between a fresh-from-high-school bull crushing on his friend's mother -- a curvaceous cow. Fun story, I just want to get it out of my head, and on the page.
No matter what, I'm a writer, and I feel best when I'm writing -- even when it's the most trying thing I've ever done. The ease of writing comes and goes. All I can do is barrel forward until the story gets done, and deal with whatever obstacles get in the way as they come at me. In the end, I can't stay away from writing, I'm too far gone and know the consequences of not writing. I think Ray Bradbury described the feeling best -- If you did not write every day, the poisons would accumulate and you would begin to die, or act crazy or both – you must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.
Thanks for letting me blather on about my issues. I feel better now. Aaaah, the catharsis of writing. ^^ I hope to post my next story as soon as it's finished.
A big thanks to all my readers, commenters, and new watchers! You're awesome. Without you, the writing process is incomplete; the written word is meant to be read, and stories are meant to be shared. Thanks for stopping by.
