Upchuckle lives up to the first part of his alias.
General | Posted 16 years agoI said that I'd keep you guys updated on my phlebotomy rounds on a day-per-day basis, but the past two days involved my stomach turning itself inside-out from a stomach flu. I have no idea what caused it, but the likely cause seems to be expired microwaveable food.
SO
After several cups of ginger ale and a couple days of doing nothing, I felt much better and went back to my phlebotomy rounds today. Unfortunately, the unexpected hiatus from the hospital set me back, so I'll probably have to do some of my hospital work on Saturday.
Today didn't work out so great since I was somewhat rusty and only did successful blood draws from three of ten patients that came in. Well, patients that came in and let me stick 'em anyway. It turns out not everybody likes having a trainee poke at their arms repeatedly (Who knew?). I had to stay relatively later today so I can squeeze in as many hours as possible before school starts. By then it'll be REALLY hard to work on these phlebotomy rounds.
However, of the successful draws I did, one of the patients used to be a paramedic. I was a bit nervous about poking him once he told me he was a paramedic, but I surprised myself when I struck one of his veins on the first try.

Starting Blood Draw
General | Posted 16 years agoI'll be starting at the main hospital for the first two and a half days including today. At first, I was limited to observing how the lab assistants took blood. Eventually, I was allowed to take blood from two of the other lab assistants since they had relatively easy to find veins. All I used today was a small needle known as the butterfly (you can see why they're called such here). They're the easiest to use since they are relatively flexible and cause less discomfort. Eventually, I'll have to use syringes later in the week.
The third and last blood draw I did was from an out patient. He was very nice and relatively calm for letting a student prod at his veins. I didn't even have to poke him more than once!
However, I'll have to get up at 4:30 in the morning (A.K.A. the ass crack of dawn) to start at my morning draws tomorrow. At least I'll be done relatively early, but I'll probably spend that extra time sleeping.

Phlebotomy Rounds
General | Posted 16 years agoStarting next Monday, I'll be under training for being a phlebotomist as part of my curriculum. I need to draw blood from 20 people in the span of the week. There are several different types of instruments I have to use too, so I have to be proficient with every type of equipment. The schedule will be figured on the first day, so I don't know the times I need to show up for on the rest of the week. There are three other students also doing this, so we get to exchange stories about how THERE WAS BLOOD EVERYWHERE and whatnot.
I'll be sure to update you guys on every day. Hopefully.
(I had to delete the first journal. It was blank because I accidentally went trigger happy with the mouse.)

Mail time
General | Posted 16 years agoI just received my diploma for my bachelor's degree in the mail. I graduated several months earlier, but I couldn't attend the graduation ceremony because I was missing five credit hours at the time. They were just filler elective credit hours, so I merely completed the rest of my term within the college at my hometown.
Oh, I'd also like to mention that I had my new laptop about... a couple of weeks ago. Windows 7 is pretty awesome.

Zombie Laptop
General | Posted 16 years agoNot quite as exciting as the title wants you to believe, but the information on my laptop seems to be salvageable. I just need to download some of the more important data on to a couple of flash drives.
My laptop is a husk of its former self, but at least nothing happened to the data itself since I had a couple of essays typed out on it before the incident. My new laptop should be coming in around the 24th.

Laptop Update
General | Posted 16 years agoI can't stay on for too long on this computer, so here's the game plan so far.
I found a laptop that fits my needs, but I need to sort out my finances first before I'm able to buy it. At the absolute earliest, I'll be back on a regular internet schedule within a couple of weeks.
I may have to take commissions early because of this, but I'll have to see if I can scrape up some extra moolah first. I'm not taking them yet, for the record. It's just a possibility for the near future.
Gotta go.

Borked Laptop
General | Posted 16 years agoI certainly hope that being reborn from ashes applies to laptops in addition to phoenixes. It turns out my RAM could be completely shot to Hell since my computer gives me a blue screen every time I try to boot up (including through Safe Mod). It looks like I'll have to do some data recovery and computer replacement.
I'll have pretty limited access to everything (chat clients, this website, pretty much anything internet related) for the time being. Updates to come whenever possible.

Some Weird Commission Idea
General | Posted 16 years agoIt's not really all that original since this is largely based off of the World of Goo sale a while back.
Somebody asks what they want (sketch, color, whatever), and I draw it out. Then, they are free to donate as much as they feel the drawing is worth or what they can spare at the time. I'll probably restrict the queue to three or four slots as this is largely experimental.
What this basically is is taking requests with some money on the side. I don't expect to make a whole lot of money, if any. It just gives me some additional income for Christmas presents.
Is this a good idea or the worst idea since the solar-powered flashlight? If I do go through with this, it probably won't start until my semester is over in December when I have much more free time.

)Calzones
General | Posted 16 years agoRecently, I went out for some lunch at the local pizzeria. I skipped breakfast, so I didn't feel like having their lasagna that only comes in small portions. I venture into the menu and notice that they serve calzones. I've heard of them before, but I didn't know what they were. I ask the waitress, and she basically told me that it was a pizza folded over in half and folded shut. Since the pizzeria's lasagna portions were so little, I figure that their largest calzone would be perfect for me to order.
Oh my GOD.
This calzone served to me was a giant, sixteen-inch diameter pizza quesadilla filled with pepperoni, mozzarella, and teeming with grease. It is undoubtedly one of the best things I ever had. I could barely even finish halfway before asking for a to-go box. That calzone was worth every penny, and I'll be having some later tonight.
(woohoo quality food journal)

3. Fuck. Your. Rules.
4. Post 5 outrageous/retarded/incredibly stupid things you've done in your life
5. Tag 3 faggots of your choice
1. In one of the first labs I did back in chemistry, I decided to not wear gloves (not forget, decided). Shortly after pouring the nitric acid, some of the skin on my hand bubbled and turned green from the inevitable splashback of acid droplets. It hurt.
2. I microwaved 25 peeps at once just to see what would happen.
3. A couple of friends and I were helping with cleaning one of my friend's apartment. The food was one of the things that needed to go, but for some reason we decided to mix up the remaining contents (which included milk, pure cinnamon, cocoa, orange juice, and spices for extra flavor), and I was dared to down it. Sure enough, I tried it. At first it wasn't that bad, but after a minute my mouth felt like it was run over by a flaming garbage truck.
4. I ate an omelet from a college cafeteria that was notorious for once poisoning the entire student body with salmonella just from the water.
5. I once tried to find the emergency key to the back door of my house among shards of broken pottery and other sharp things. The resulting cuts weren't that deep (thank God).
I will tag three people who want to do it mostly because I forgot to do this yesterday and am in a hurry to finish it.

Icon Journal
General | Posted 16 years agoI'm in a strange mood that's a combination of charity and artist's block, so I'm willing to make up some icons. However, these icons will have my personalized touch as seen here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2560661/
I will attempt to add realism, fugliness, or whatever else comes to my mind when your request rolls around.
The best part of this though?
