Despite Everything, I'm Still Me
Posted 3 years agoThings have been insanely rough the past few months, and as a result, I find myself back here.
Hey guys, long time no see.
I don't know what, if anything, I'm going to do here, but it just felt like a comfortable place to turn to as it felt like my world was collapsing around me. In the meantime, I'm kind of happy to see that I nearly 17k submissions to breeze through. People here have been busy even as I've...been through "a learning experience."

100 Watches
Posted 17 years agoHoly crap, my first milestone! 100 watchers! Yeah, not nearly as many as those GOOD artists, but hey, it's still one more digit than I had before so I'm gonna celebrate. Also it's Christmas Eve, so need to do something anyway. Thanks for the present, guys 'n gals!
Interesting article
Posted 17 years agoI think being an art site, there isn't anyone here who wouldn't find this interesting. It's a very good discussion on character design in media, specifically comparing live action movies, animated movies, and video games.

There's some good information here to keep in mind when creating your own characters, even for a still image.

A Brief History of Meme
Posted 17 years agoThis has been an amusing last few days, all starting from a comment by
Jurrel about music I listen to in the car.
I have a handful of cd's I listen to in the car, since it doesn't do mp3 or have a good Aux-In. One of these I called "Random Weirdness," which had an oddball collection on songs ranging from "Rhapsody In Blue" to the Benny Hill Theme.
I decided to remix this CD, removing a few songs and adding some new ones to properly make it random and weird, all at the same time. In the midst of this,
Rozga saw what I was doing and the playlist I was working on and suggested that I make a "LOLz Internetz" CD. I actually liked that idea and decided to do it. Instead of simply slapping some songs together, I decided to make a chronology of internet memes over the years. It's been great going back through some of these goofy things, noting them down to create a playlist.
As I mentioned what I was doing to other peeps, they offered suggestions, quite a few I had totally missed. The internet has put me in a great mood! Have alot of songs so far, this will likely end up as a multi-disc collection. Still working on it, at the moment and easily distracted by other memes that don't have songs related to them.

Funny Phrase of the Day
Posted 17 years agoFrom a phone conversation overheard at work:
"gas-propelled fireplace"
Just think about that for a moment.

Fanime '08
Posted 17 years agoFanime was pretty dang cool this weekend. Decided not to go today, the last day since I really needed to do some cleanup around my room. Didn't really sit down and do any drawing at all, but don't really feel bad about that.
Rozga came along on Friday and Sunday, and really helped me appreciate some of the panels and things, and it was fun to have someone with me to joke with afterwards. Most times when I just go by myself something will happen and I have no one who knows about it so if I make a reference people just look at me weird(er than usual). I also have someone to cosplay with in the future now, squee!
I picked up a pair of ear and hand paws to go with my old skunktail so I was wandering around more as a skunky version of a neko boy instead of just being token furry. When I showed the complete ensemble to the people I bought the paws from, they thought it was cute and took pictures for their website, squee again!
I'm surprised, it's been almost ten years since I made that tail and people still think it looks good. Personally, I think it needs to be retired and remade. This con was most likely it's last appearance, I'm gonna start actively looking for long black and white fur to make a replacement.

1. Do I have a distinct style of drawing?
2. If so, what exactly is it that defines my "style"?
3. Would you say my art usually follows a 'theme'?
4. Is there anything I really need to improve on or change?
5. Does my style (if I have one) remind you of/look like the style of anyone else?
6. Judging from whatever art of mine that you've seen, what do you think I do the best at?
7. What do you think I suck at?

Posted 17 years agoMan, this was a REALLY good con!
I don't know if it was because I was monetarily comfortable, because I wasn't on staff (for the first time in seven years), or if it was just a good vibe, but damn! I got to meet a couple of people from FA, and saw alot more, but as outgoing as I am with people I know, I'm EXTREMELY self-conscious about looking like a total drooling fanboy to people when I first introduce myself. So as a result I tend to keep a distance and wallflower.
Highlights of the con:
1) Looking trendy in my pin-striped winter kimono.
2) Getting crushed and fluff attacked by the HUGE pile of fursuits that hopped into the same elevator as me. So. Many. PAAAaaawsss....
3) Puffer Fish
4) Finding out that people DO remember me despite me being a total ass and not keeping in touch. Thanks everyone!
5) CD-skipping Opera - I still hurt from laughing so hard.
I've also decided that starting immediately after con, I want to set a single day a week and dedicate it to an art night. I'd like for it to be an art jam, but right now it will merely consist of me and
Rozga working on drawings and fursuits. I'm ALWAYS inspired after a con, and almost always waste the oppurtunity. Not this time; consider THAT my new years resolution.

Posted 18 years agoOkay, it's only recently occured to me that I have alot to do, artwise. There's a good handful of things i'd promised people and haven't done much with, one of which is a BIG project. So definately not taking commissions till I get off my tail and catch up on these things.
Air Races!
Posted 18 years agoI just got back from the Reno Air Races, unfortunately in a fit of indecision I ended up not taking any art supplies or my Wacom tablet. So nothing to show for my time away, but you can probably expect to see some aircraft drawings in the near future now. :3
@!#$^ Videogame thing
Posted 18 years agoI normally don't go and do all those flippin' questionaire thingies that breeze through here and LJ, but then one related to videogames had to appear. Now bein' the self-appointed main man thereof, I absolutely have to participate. You all suck. =)
1) What video game/video games are you playing right now (At least three is good).
Final Fantasy III, Wii Sports, Final Fantasy (no, that's not a repeat or typo), New Sam 'n Max episodes, Liberty City Stories, Final Fantasy XI, Second Life
2) What are your top five favourite video games of all time?
CastleVania, Gran Turismo 2, Okami, Super Mario Bros. 3, Tetris
3) What systems do you own?
Oy, let's see. Vic 20, Commodore 64 x 2, Atari 2600, Atari 520ST, Intellivision, Sega Master System, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, NES, Famicom knockoff, SNES, N64, GameCube, 3DO, PSX, PS2 x2, Lynx, GameGear x 2, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Color, Virtual Boy, GBA, GBA SP (NES 20th Ann. Edition), DS, PSP, an old homebuilt 68k Mac, and of course, my PC's.
4) What is your favourite video game genre (you may list more if you wish)?
Action/Adventure, Puzzle
5) Which do you prefer; Fantasy or Sci-fi?
I actually prefer a good blend. Final Fantasy is a grand example of this, especially VII and XII. Ultima III is another good example. There's computers, guns, lasers, and yet there's people beatin' the crap out of each other with magic and swords, hells yeah!
6) What's your favourite type of puzzles in video games?
Hmmm, I'd say the kind that have more than one solution. Especially if differing paths lead to differing outcomes.
7) What's your favorite weapon from a video game (you may list more than one if you wish, also list the game it is from)?
The yo-yo from Star Tropics!
8) Who is your favourite hero/heroine from a video game (you may list more than one if you wish, also list the game they are from)?
Richter Belmont, that dude kicks ass, has long hair, and still dresses snazzy. Cid from Final Fantasy VII also has to be on this list. Another snazzy dresser, always confident, and he's got the balls to light dynamite with a cigarette.
9) What kind of weapon do you prefer for your hero/heroine?
It depends on the hero/heroine. Anyone named Belmont absolutely requires a whip or flail. My preference is quarter staff, an under-represented weapon in video games.
10) Do you prefer emotional characters or stoic ones?
If I had to pick from the two, I'd say stoic. But even that gets annoying due to overuse. Back in the day, characters were stoic due to the hardware limitations. Now that characters can show emotion, they have way too much. I love Kingdom Hearts, but damn, I so wanna bitch-slap Sora sometimes.
11) Do you prefer story cliches or creative themes?
I want creative use of cliches, I love it when a videogame doesn't always take itself seriously.
12) Do you prefer expansive worlds, or detailed ones?
Why not both? Grand Theft Auto accomplishes this fairly well. On the other hand, Okami wasn't detailed, but the style was so perfect and the world was so big, it didn't need to be.
13) What's your biggest frustration in a video game?
Bad control schemes.
14) What is your favourite vehicle and creature in a video game?
Hehe, the chocobo! It's both a creature and a vehicle!
15) What missions or quests do you love in video games?
Entertaining missions. That's what makes Wario Ware a great game. Some of the hunts in FFXII were great too, as well as some of the more creative rampages in GTA.
16) What missions/quests do you hate in video games?
Anything scripted. Those "battles" in the Final Fantasy series that you're supposed to lose? Yeah, that's incredibly annoying. Especially when you're actually powerful enough to take out the cheating critter. It took me days to figure that out with some monster in FFVI.
17) What's your favourite power in a video game?
Okami Amaterasu's paintbrush. The ability to alter the environment by painting directly onto the world, very creative and it gave a good sense of being a god.
18) Who is your favourite villain from a video game (you may list more than one if you wish, also list the game they are from)?
Bowser: despite being a toony Gamera wannabe, he just seems more "real" than most bad guys. In some ways he's practical, he's powerful but not perfect, and he's kinda cute.
18b) Who is your favourite rival from a video game (you may list more than one if you wish, also list the game they are from)?
Gilgamesh! An amusing guy from FFV who makes a reappearance (sorry if this is a spoiler for people) in FFXII. He has the best entrance (in FFXII) out of anyone that I can think of too.
19) Who is the worst villain from a video game (you may list more than one if you wish, also list the game they are from)?
Jenova from FFVII, just freakin' die already, you bitch!
19b) Who is the worst rival from a video game (you may list more than one if you wish, also list the game they are from)?
Knuckles, he makes the term "dumbass" an understatement.
20) Who is the worst hero/heroine from a video game (you may list more than one if you wish, also list the game they are from)?
Hmmm, that dude from Evergrace, I mean seriously I can't even remember his name. Or maybe the moron in Doom3 that doesn't know how to hold a flashlight and a gun at the same time.
21) What is the worst weapon in a video game (you may list more than one if you wish, also list the game they are from)?
Snarks from Half-Life. Just too silly.
22) What's your favourite art style for video games
I have a fondness for the artsy, Okami was just way too nice looking and the music fit perfectly.
23) What's the most creative game you've played?
Katamari Damacy
24) What are your top five worst games ever (list the system(s) they are on as well)?
The Sims Online (PC), Gran Turismo 3 (PS2), Neverwinter Nights (PC), Aliens vs Predator: Extinction (PS2/XBox), Star Wars Galaxies after the NGE (PC)
25) What's your favorite character design (you may list more than one if you wish, also list the game they are from)?
FFXII (I still think it borrowed from Star Wars, but it made it look cool), and Okami.
26) In your opinion, what is the worst Character design
Anything from EA Sports or any other licensed sports franchise. You know, since there's none whatsoever.
27) In your opinion, what game had the best ending ever?
Okami and Breath of Fire 2. Both had me emotionally involved. Okami I almost couldn't beat because a cut scene in the middle of the final boss fight had me near tears.
28) In your opinion, what game had the worst ending ever?
The first Final Fantasy as it was originally translated on the NES. Even the new versions aren't much better. I just sat there, re-read the ending and blinked. "Why the hell did I even play the damn game then!?"
29) What were your favorite items in a video game?
Kuribos Shoe (Super Mario 3), double ended dildo (GTA: San Andreas), the Claw doll (Shogo: MAD), porkchops hidden inside of walls (CastleVania)
30) In your opinion, what are the worst items in a video game?
Armour that is totally useless because you're at the end of the game.
31) In your opinion, what are the worst powers in a video game?
The summons in FFXII. I only ever used one ONCE to open a stupid door in the entire game.
32) What's your favourite thing about video games?
Not just watching or reading a story but actively being a part of it.
1) What video game/video games are you playing right now (At least three is good).

Further Confusion
Posted 19 years agoFC is just crazy cool, I'm really enjoying myself, even the work I did for FCTV as camera man. I was the roving camera at the base of the stage and ended up doing a fair bit of audience interaction as well as other silly things. I'm so worn out now though, hurting all over.
Aside from that I also ended up doin' one badge for someone a couple of sketchbooks and a few side scribbles of my own. I'll post those eventually after the con.

Hurray for Christmas!
Posted 19 years agoAw yeah! I got a new Wacom tablet! 6" x 8" Intuos 3. Squeee!
With that on hand now, been trying more things to scribble with other than Photoshop, Alias Sketchbook, and Flash. So far the contenders are Open Canvas and Art Rage 2. I'm kinda leaning towards waiting till I can afford Sketchbook.

Oh, now I get it!
Posted 19 years agoSo THAT'S what 'OC' stands for!
Damnit, now I'm experiencing tablet envy. I'm still using the same 4x5 ArtZ tablet I was given (third hand) about seven years ago. I could really use a larger Intuos for the extra precision in the device.
I've been raving about Alias Sketchbook for some time now as well, but OpenCanvas is considerably cheaper, it looks like. Well dang, I don't know which one I really want now.
