Know any good webcomic listings for The OOPs?
Posted 10 years agoWell! At the moment, FA and DA are sort of the OOPs' home bases (and I'm loving how much direct feedback/commentary the format allows), but I've been thinking that I should bring a bit more attention to the valsalia.com website, if only to catch the attention of readers outside the FA/DA circles.
I feel that signing up to a webcomic listing of some sort would be a good way to go, but it's been a while since I've set foot in that part of the internet. I know TopWebComics is still going strong, but I don't have a very solid idea of what's "hot" right now in terms of webcomic collections.
Someone was kind enough to list The OOPs in Comic Rocket, but my attempts to claim the listing and personalize it have just been met with silence, so that's out as an option. I'll probably put together a fancy banner to advertise it, but I kinda need to figure out where it'll be posted first.
So if you know any places it might be effective to post The OOPs, please drop a suggestion!

Posted 10 years agoHello hello! A crazy amount of stuff has popped up in Real Life recently; nothing bad, just time-consuming! So, this week's comic will be posted later on in the week, and apologies to anyone trying to get in contact with me recently because I've been all over the place.
Also, I've received a few commission requests over the last couple days and would love to get around to them, but since I'm a bit backed up at the moment, I need just a little time to finish the ones I've started before I can take on any new ones.
So all in all, I'd like to ask for a bit of patience, if I could! I keep trying to beat down any semblance of a Real Life but the bastard keeps getting back up! >:(

Blabbin' on Podcasts
Posted 10 years agoA little while ago,
cobaltk and I had a nice, juicy chat with
cheasydino about our use of transformation in our respective comics, as well as thoughts and observations thereabout. That conversation is now available to shove in your ears as the latest episode of Cheasydino's Changing Times podcast, available here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15649879/

A rose by any other name... could lose Google recognition
Posted 11 years agoAch, titles! I thought I had it worked out so well before I actually finished the prologue and got to changin' things. It's gotta be recognizable in some way, describe some part of the comic, and offer a "hook" to catch the attention of a potential reader.
Skipping past all the mental back-and-forthing I've done over the subject, I'm thinking I may revert to the original title, plus a little tagline to add a hook. So right now, I'm thinking of changing the title to:
The Out of Placers
A Story of Change
The original "Out of Placers" title was originally meant to just cover the prologue, but not only does it describe the characters involved well, it also seems to be the title the readers have associated with the comic the most, so with the added tagline, I feel it accomplishes everything I'm looking for in a title.
Whatever it ends up as, the time to nail down a finalized title would be now, when there's just 3 pages to change, as opposed to dozens.
Of course, being the author, it can be really hard to tell how the people reading this feel about the naming scheme. So, I'd like to ask for your thoughts on the matter, even if it's just "whatever's fine." Let me know what's in your head!

Gettin' started back up
Posted 11 years agoWell here we are, getting back into weekly comic updates, with commissions open and prices finally posted. I've been getting things slowly and thoroughly started over the last year, and I finally feel like I'm in the main phase of this whole "drawing stuff on the internet" business!
Nothing big to note yet; I just didn't want to have a journal on the front page asking for Flash help weeks after receiving said Flash help.
Life tip: drink lots of water. It's super-healthy!

Looking for a little Flash help!
Posted 11 years agoWell! I've spent the last few days putting together some short animations for a Flash piece, but now that I've reached the Flash part, it's clear that things are a bit more complicated than I realized, so I'm looking for some help!
The SWF should be fairly simple (Play a looping idle animation, play a short video based on which button the user presses, then return to the idle animation), and I've already made all the audio and video elements, so it shouldn't take much work. So if there's anyone out there with a little Flash knowledge, or knows someone who does, by all means let me know! I'm willing to put some money down for it, if you'd like to think of it as a commission.
I'll be resuming the comic when this is done, so that might provide some extra motivation! :)

Commissions opening, a bit at a time!
Posted 11 years agoYup, it's time to get some drawin' done while I'm putting a website together! Starting off, I'd like to open up to 2 or 3 commissions at a time before accepting more, so that I can get a better feel for how long they take, how much work is involved, and all that.
I'd like to talk with each commissioner directly so I can give a more exact estimate based on what's being commissioned, but in general, I'm setting fully-colored/shaded pieces, like http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14810201/ at around $30 or so.
I'm also happy to do animated pieces, like http://www.furaffinity.net/full/14391078/ . Those generally start around $50, and depend heavily upon what sorts of animation is involved, which is why I want to chat about the details before setting a price. If you commission a piece like this, I'll gladly render it out as an avatar if you like!
So not only will you get pretty arts, but you'll be helping me figure out price ranges (and probably get a great deal in the process, as I'd rather undercharge than overcharge in this phase)!
I'm also in the process of feeling out my limits; I'd like to keep things generally PG-13 for now, but I'm open to things like nudes, tasteful sex and the like, so once again, we'll chat and work that out!
So if you're at all interested, by all means send me a note with your idea/s!

Comics n' Commissions
Posted 11 years agoSo, this whole comic dealie seems to be be going pretty well! At this point in the story, it's a lot more obvious where the rest is going to go; everything so far has been part of a sort of prologue, in which there's only 1 or 2 more comics left. Now that the plot, characters and setting are properly set up, I can finally start drawing the fun stuff that I've been looking forward to since coming up with the comic's concept! Giving yinglet-Kass a big girly makeover is just the start.
Anyway, when I first started posting these comics, I'd planned on sticking to comics only, rather than other sorts of artwork, commissions, and so on. But after all this interaction with the community, experimenting with animation and drawing others' characters, I've really come around to the idea of opening up for commissions! Plus I'm between jobs, so any extra income would be just lovely. Once this prologue is over, I plan on making a website for the comic (of which I already have the domain name and basic framework, I've just been lazy), tightening up a couple character designs, and opening up for commissions.
So! It might be a bit rocky at first while I figure out how long things take, what a good hourly rate would be, and so on, but it's definitely something I want to do. If anyone has any info, advice, or guides about the commissioning process, then by all means, please share!

Well here's a comic
Posted 11 years agoI originally started The Out-Of-Placers as a way of keeping myself drawing regularly, so that I wouldn't go on month-long breaks and let my skills get rusty. Now it seems to be getting a fair amount of attention! I still feel rather new to this, so reading all these comments about what people like, think, and predict about the story and characters has become the part of my day I look forward to the most! Thanks to everyone who's taken the time to comment; I'll try to respond to each one, as they're really special to me.
I was also a bit worried that the main plot point (occurring around comics 13-15) might scare away some otherwise interested readers, but it looks like exactly the opposite has happened! Which is great, because I intend to make the experience of living as a completely different race and gender a central part of the story. After all the encouraging feedback, I'm a lot more comfortable about taking this route.
So all in all, I'm really glad I finally decided to draw this. Thanks again for all the feedback so far!
