Job Hunting Can Be Frustrating
General | Posted 14 years agoI've been silent for a few months, working on a few projects while looking for job opporunities in the Austin, Texas area. It is not easy dealing with the discouragement I sometimes feel when some places won't hire me because I'm over-qualified and other places won't hire me because I'm not qualified in that paritcular job.
I do what I can to hold on, trying to find happiness in whatever I can. Plus, rent is not cheap here and I find myself with more room than I need. It feels like one of those moments in a book when you feel a roommate is going to show up eventually and you hope and pray it'll be someone who's a perfect match and that somehow everything will work out.
I miss costuming. It's far too hot right now. I miss hanging out with my friends, too.

I have an idea. It's called CaravanCon.
General | Posted 14 years agoMy money problems have lately forced me into a creative corner like the innovators of old. Stuck with what seems to be a frustrating scenario without cash or any job prospects, I begin to think about ways to help alleviate this money problem.
I have an idea and it’s called CaravanCon.
Now, before you ask when this will happen, keep in mind this is only a concept and I’m experimenting with the idea by presenting it to all of you here on FA. I was thinking of holding a mini-convention somewhere in the DFW area where furs (and even non-furs who are willing) could come together in a one-day market location where it would essentially be a dealer’s den with a unique twist.
(Here's the car part I'd rather find a way around, but I put it here anyway because I know someone has to have a better idea...)
We would set up in an area (with permission and permits, of course) where the dealer’s would park their cars in a formation to create a makeshift dealer’s den. I would only say they should use their trunks as the selling space if we wouldn’t be able to procure a covered area. However, if we could reserve a location with a roof or protection against unexpected bad weather, then we could set up tables instead and have a more traditional dealer’s den. (And yes, I’m’ aware of how the open-trunk looks, considering the suggestion of illicit dealings, but like I said, this is a concept I am presenting in hopes that someone can see a way to improve it with little to no budget at hand. The car concept is more of a nod towards the Caravan theme, but that’s more out of necessity than desire. Honestly, I'd rather have a civic center).
Also, I wanted there to be a limited set of workshops and panels, which would really be a more of outdoor/indoor forum scenario planned in a space adjoining the dealer’s area (close enough to the dealers so they could see and participate) which would cover a new topic for thirty minutes at the start of every hour. Personally, I could talk on the following topics in this kind of setup:
3PM Wage Warrior: Forum on saving and earning money during the recession
4PM Open forum on Writing and technique
5PM Spirituality talk for interfaith dialogue
6PM Subfandoms: What other fandoms do you participate in? Share with us!
7PM Costuming on the cheap: The gift of thrift
8PM-10PM Mini-Dance! (If inside only)
And I plan on having this CaravanCon start at lunchtime (12pm) and ending around 10PM, depending on the location. I want to make it worth a whole day of fun and fellowship for those willing to make the trip.
Specifics about this Con Concept:
-No membership fee means anyone can come in and buy from the dealer’s den BUT that means no way to identify age. This restricts the art to PG and below.
-The one-day aspect of this con would mean there would be no hotel for anyone to stay at and they would have to leave by the end of the night, keeping this con available to those who are within driving distance. That’s why it would be important to start it at noon so everyone can drive in from their respective locations.
-It would be on a Saturday to optimize attendance potential.
-The logistics of this one day, mini convention would require only a few members of security to ensure safety in the dealer’s den and ensure horseplay is halted before it even begins. I’d say six security personnel minimum, which could double as Con Staff.
-If it’s outside, fursuits would be tough to handle in the heat, but if it’s inside (in say, a Civic Center) fursuits would be welcome.
-No catering or con suite when there’s essentially no hotel room. You eat before and after the con, bring a quick bite to eat, or go to a nearby fast-food joint. No food vendors means no need to get food-handling permits.
-No membership to worry about, so no registration setup required, but then we’d have to do a count in some way to cement attendance figures and gain interest for future events. Perhaps a group photo?
-We could make a quick and easy website with basic information, directions, times and information on which dealers will be attending.
-For dealers, your attendance fee is your own gas, your own table (if inside), chairs, and such, though if we get a civic center, we’ll have to see what kind of rules they have on electricity usage. And of course, dealers need all proper permits to sell.
One of the biggest parts of this mini-con is the idea that people could bring what items they wish to sell and use what they already own as a chance to earn some extra money, but if I do this, then it’ll essentially be more of a bazaar than a dealer’s den/area. I looked around at my possessions and realized I own a lot of stuff I don’t use, but could potentially sell and make profit, like lots of books, some comics, and even the occasional DVD. I want to know what the rules are for reselling already-bought items not made by the seller.
Basic ideas all laid-out here. So, questions and comments? Especially from experienced con staff out there?

My cousin Cathy passed away this morning
General | Posted 14 years agoWhat can I say? My faith never wavered that she would get better. And I guess she did.
I had my bags packed yesterday to visit her. I sensed something. Never in the entire time of this ailment had I the feeling to go visit her so suddenly. I told God I was ready to go and I wanted to go. "Send me, God. Send me." But He had me wait. And then this happened.
I was ready. I sensed something. And still He had me wait.
My brother said perhaps that was God's way of sparing me see her in the state she was in.
But my faith never wavered. Never. And it still hasn't.
My brother told me the Scripture of the three men about to be burned, that they prayed for God to save them, and even if He didn't, they would still praise Him anyway.
She fought for ten years, my brother told me. I didn't realize it had been that long. I thought it was half a decade.
Just pray for her, please, and her entrance into heaven.
As for me, I just need today to be a quiet day. I don't even know what I mean by that, but that's the feeling I get.

My cousin Cathy has asked to be taken off life support
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm sure many of you have read some of the previous posts I've written about my cousin Cathy, who has been battling Leukemia for more than half a decade now. She is in need of prayers, because today my brother told me that she asked to be taken off of life support. She's a fighter. I don't know what recent occurrences have knocked her down, but I know God wouldn't have her fight this long if he didn't mean to heal her.
Please pray for Cathy and her family. Pray for her healing. Pray for a rejuvenation of spirit. Pray she will regain her lost hope and see God's glory in the miracle He is about to perform for her. She needs to believe and have faith. I know if we have faith and speak God's Truth and healing over this situation, then everything will work out for His glory.

I will be at Furry Fiesta (also Christian Furs panel!)
General | Posted 15 years agoHello! I know this is literally less than 48 hours before the start of Furry Fiesta this weekend, but I will be there volunteering as well as representing Rainbow Ark while readying myself to talk with people about the Word.
I will be carrying this snazzy messenger bag, which you guys can get at the Cafepress store, located here:
http://www.cafepress.com/MyRainbowArk.415376114#
If you see me, come say hi!
Also, I heard the Christian furs panel was canceled on Sunday of the convention. When I learned this, I contacted the Furry Fiesta Chairman and asked if I could run the panel instead. He agreed and will put the information on an Addendum sheet reserved for last minute changes in the schedule. So now I get to host a panel with praise music and fellowship! \(^o^)/
The Christian Furs Panel will be held Sunday morning, Feb. 27th, from 9AM-10AM in Panel Room 1(a.k.a. Chinaberry). It's not just for Christians or furs, but is meant to be interfaith as well so everyone is welcome!
Also, here's the flier
jarrellwoods and I worked on which I pass out at the convention: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5307111
Notice we have a good mention of

Prayer Request: Duroc's mother is ill
General | Posted 15 years agoMy friend Duroc said his mother had a heart attack this past Wednesday and he's been in the hospital(s) at her side ever since. He says her heart is at 50% capacity and her kidney transplant has been said to be showing signs of advanced kidney disease (with it's function now at 10%). Duroc says she's doing well considering the situation, and he doesn't like to ask for help, but I'm posting this to ask for prayers and words of comfort for he and his mother.
His Furaffinity page is here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2115730/
Please send him a note or a message of comfort to help him see it's okay to ask for help.

Pledge I'm making till I get a job
General | Posted 15 years agoRight now, I'm at a very key time where I dearly need to get a job very soon. I had a seasonal one over the holidays, but now that's over, I have to find another.
So I will not upload anything until I am hired for a job. You guys can hold me to that. The moment you see me upload anything, the first question you should ask is "Do you have a job yet?" If I say "No," then you can tell me "Get back out there and find one, fox fluff."
It's important. I have to get this done, though honestly I may not be sure of where to look.

*sigh*
General | Posted 15 years agoEver had one of those moments when you had the best intentions, you felt you did everything right, and even felt like you accomplished the impossible only to realize you were being a little too optimistic?
Yep. Just had one of those. Big time.
It's all right if you're reading this without context. Let's just say I learned what works and what doesn't when it comes to writing and optimism.
Regardless, I still think this is an awesome quote:
Let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.

Surrealist Primer (Mini-Guide to my Surrealist Writings)Ver2
General | Posted 15 years agoIt occurs to me that surrealist writing may be difficult to read for those who are unfamiliar with the genre. To help alleviate this, I offer this quick guide to my surrealist writing as a way to help readers get the most out of my works.
When reading, keep these in mind:
1
Freeform association
A lot my surrealist works rely on mental associations I have between subjects. This allows for a unique connection between concepts and creates a surrealist roadmap in which avid readers will begin to see patterns appear over time. For example, you may notice a strong connection between animals, transformation and costumes throughout my work.
2
Wordplay
Part of the fun of surrealist writing stems from the use of wordplay throughout almost all of my surrealist entries. The use of this method is similar to poetry and could even suggest that my writings are similar to prose poetry in style, since it is sometimes about the sound of the words rather than their meaning. For example: “A Creaky Chairman” plays off the phrases “a creaky chair” and “chairman” to create a unique connection which relies upon linguistic similarity to pull off.
3
Interpretation
One of the reasons I enjoy surrealist writing stems from the fact that each reader sees something different in the works I create. I may attempt to keep certain works ambiguous in meaning as a way to allow readers to include their own interpretations, thus exercising their minds. For example, one person may see transformation as a metaphor for growth, while another sees the transformation as an action sequence and still another suggests connections between the old and new forms of the transformation. It’s all based on what the reader sees, though keep in mind that a consensus of reader interpretation does not mean that particular entry fits their suggestions.
4 (added 2-6-2011)
Rorschach Imagery Test
When you read surrealist works which have strong ambiguity of meaning, in order for the human mind to make sense of the scenario, it will have to draw upon learned associations already in existence. In other words, your experiences from life will change the meaning of what is written. For example, if I write about a character with a giant flower growing out of his back, and you absolutely hate flowers, you will probably not think about his situation in a very positive way. However, if you loved Dr. Seuss, and more specifically Daisy-Head Mayzie, then you might think of the situation as more whimsical than problematic. Knowing this, keep in mind this one important fact about surrealist writing: what you see if not necessarily what I wrote.
5 (added 2-6-2011)
Dreamspeak
Many times in my writing characters will engage each other while using what appear to be strange and nonsensical speech patterns. Here is a good example:
Orion: “Lolo! What time do you want?”
Lola: “I want the cat in the back to be the heart in your chest!”
Orion: “It's unfair how you torment me with your wily and feminine desires!”
Lola: “I'm hoping we can meet together at the milky stars.”
Orion: “Good use.”
(end scene) And the usual response to that from a reader would be:
“…what?” followed by “What are they talking about? Who’s Lolo? What’s an Orion? A cat in your back? What feminine desires? How do you meet someone at the milky stars? Why do stars have milk? What’s ‘Good Use?’ WHY DOES MY HEAD HURT?”
The point of Dreamspeak is to create an atmosphere where normal linguistic association is substituted for more subconscious representation. The harder it is for you to rationalize meaning, the easier it is for your subconscious to pick up the slack and provide unique variations upon everyday themes, such as this strange interaction which could be any number of things.
Hopefully these three guidepoints will help you enjoy surrealism even more.

My Poem: Of Silver and Moonlight
General | Posted 15 years agoOf silver and moonlight,
I notice my bed
bathed in the glow
of a hanging body.
Though the thought is morbid
when misunderstood,
I see the face of Luna
sleeping as I lie awake
and stare.
The ocean outside
is too beautiful
to turn my back on.
This apartment is perfect,
even if the world isn't.
I'm not really here.
It's only a paper memory,
but I was there once
with hopes
- - - - - - and dreams
- - - - - - - - and feelings,
- - - - - - - - - - -however fleeting.
I miss the sea
and see the mist
crash on the rocks
where I once sat
and howled
of silver and moonlight.

Well, had to get a rejection eventually...
General | Posted 15 years agoI received a response to my Bewere the Night submission from the editor (which is pretty fast. I sent it about 14 hours ago), who said the story is not quite what they're looking for. It was a bit of a downer, but on the flip side, I now have a story to submit somewhere else and I don't have to edit it, proofread it or change it in anyway since I already went through the process.
But I'm going to do something fun with the rejections. I'm gonna to put them in a folder with some sort of label like "Badges of Persistence" or "Be Stubborn. Don't Give Up," or something similar.
And then I'm gonna put awesome stickers all around the rejection. Very positive stickers, like "YOU DID IT!" "WOW!" "EXCELLENT!" That's how it's done.
Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after another.
* Walter Elliott, in The Spiritual Life : Doctrine and Practice of Christian Perfection (1918)
Victory belongs to the most persevering.
o Napoleon I of France, as quoted in Treasury of Thought : Forming an Encyclopædia of Quotation from Ancient and Modern Authors (1894) by Maturin Murray Ballou
With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable.
* Thomas Buxton, 1st Baronet, as quoted in Frank Leslie's Sunday Magazine Vol. XIX (January - June 1886), p. 89
By perseverance the snail reached the ark.

By perseverance the snail reached the ark.

Planning ahead to a novel
General | Posted 15 years agohttp://www.furplanet.com/shop/
I've been wanting to write a novel for a long time and it's only recently that I've started to grow in encouragement enough to seriously consider the idea. The company that distributes Different Worlds, Different Skins also has a considerable list of writers they support. I'd like to be one of them by December 2011.
Still, I'm seven days away from submitting a work to Bewere the Night and thank God, I've got a great idea already in motion (though I had to go through two completely versions before this one).
I'm inspiring myself by listening to old game music:

I got my story published in a book available on Amazon!
General | Posted 15 years agoI finally received my copy of Different Worlds, Different Skins: Vol. 2. It's my first ever publication in an anthology. It's available for sale on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Different-Worlds-Skins-Humanitys-Encounters/dp/1456318977/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1292982907&sr=8-1
Synopsis:
What if humanity shared Earth with other sentient species? What would first contact with an alien race be like? What wonders or horrors could be wrought by our experiments to create new life-forms, both biologic and mechanical?
This continued anthology examines these ideas, showing humanity’s interaction with the Other, in the form of anthropomorphic animals. The stories cover diverse genres, from science fiction and fantasy, to contemporary fables, exploring themes of race and culture and the endless possibilities of the human condition.

Looking for Examples of Oceanography Studies
General | Posted 15 years agoI would like to ask if anyone finds any interesting stories, videos or images about the oceans, marine animals or marine conservation and if they could post them here so I could study them for the marine conservation story I'm writing. Any help would be appreciated. I really want to make this story special.

I won my first Laser Tag 30-minute match tonight!
General | Posted 15 years agoI finally achieved first in an Ironman game tonight! I earned a free game next week. WOO!
I actually was so excited, I forgot to write down the scores. I only remember the top three out of fifteen.
(1)Vaperfox
_____1190
(2)Vulcan
_____1181
(3)Toasted
_____1005
There was only one real effective technique I remember during this game:
NOTABLE MOMENT
Vaperfox (Rank 1) versus a crew of four sniper guys
There was a group of four guys that decided to stay together the whole game. They constantly went to sniper positions in one of the three towers in the arena, so naturally, I followed them in there. Since they were acting as a team and wouldn’t shoot each other, my mindset was: there’s four of them and only one of me, so I can score four times as more as any of them. Also, I realized they started to focus fire on me and forgot to shoot anyone else around their sniper position, so they lost valuable time they could’ve used to get points.
This is what I heard after I shot them many, many times:
“VAPERFOX! WHERE’S VAPERFOX?!”
I never thought it would be so fun to hear my name shouted so many times. It was like one of those moments in the game Metal Gear Solid where the main character Snake harasses guards to the point where they start to actively search for him.
I simply walked, not ran, into their tower and shot each of them in turn. They would tag me every now and then, but I would usually get two before they got me, thus keeping up my score while putting the pressure on them to stay (and continue getting shot) or leave. They left. And I did this to them in every one of the three towers. They eventually left each one in turn. I wouldn’t focus on them all the time and I would look for other players on the main floor of the maze, but I always seemed to find their next hiding spots.
The last part of the game was the best. They held up in the tower furthest from the entrance to the arena and I stood underneath, firing up at them through the grating. I got so many hits off of them and it took them almost two minutes to look down.
“Do you hear that?” they asked, possibly referencing the sound of my laser.
Note for future games
When I walked into the laser tag center, I saw that the employees were all wearing costumes. The girl in charge wore a white angel outfit while the guy at the front wore a Green Lantern suit. The girl who was one of the marshals(referees inside the arena) wore a native American squaw dress/tunic. I asked “Can we wear costumes at any time while playing?”
“Yeah, you can wear whatever you want,” the angel girl said.
I’m making my own fursuit just for this. Eventually, when my opponents are shot, they will see an actual Vaperfox :D

My cousin Cathy is in critical condition again
General | Posted 15 years agoI received a call from my dad about an hour ago and he told me my cousin Cathy is in critical condition in the hospital again. She got better after I’d asked all of you to pray for her, but now she’s back in a very dangerous situation. This time, they’re trying a 48-hour treatment where they have to pump her lungs to remove liquid so she can breathe.
I know your prayers helped last time and this time, I’m asking for them again. She’s a fighter and God knows it. He made her that way. I can only imagine what testimony she will have after God pulls her through all this.
Some of you may ask “If you know God is going to take care of her, then why pray?” Because God needs us to be a part of the solution. Our prayers are not useless. They are very powerful in a way that strikes the soul at its very core. Revelation 8:3-5 talks about the importance of prayer and what it does for those in need:
And another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a golden censer; and much incense was given to him, so that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer and filled it with the fire of the altar, and threw it to the earth; and there followed peals of thunder and sounds and flashes of lightning and an earthquake (Revelation 8:3-5).
Tonight, I’m going to perform what’s called a Night Watch. The idea is to keep vigilant for the Lord. I’m going to perform this Night Watch till daybreak (about 6 hours from now) and pray in every possible way I know how.
I want that prayer to return from the altar in such a wave of fire that it will engulf any hindrances which have presented themselves in the way of my cousin’s recovery.
Please pray for her in the Name of Jesus. She needs your intercession.

Vaperfox was never meant to be an animal
General | Posted 15 years agoVaperfox was never meant to be an animal.
I should clarify. Vaperfox is a blue aquatic fox which is a symbolic amalgamation of many things I love. The animal personification is integral to who I am as well as the natural state of Vaperfox. The animal is the vehicle for the Vaperfox fursona to function, serving as a vessel of expression for various modes of thought.
Vaperfox is playful. Vaperfox is fun. Vaperfox is lovable.
But Vaperfox is not just a series of traits designed to function as a labeling system for my personality. The fluid nature of this vessel is meant to take me places, intellectually, that I might not otherwise go if it were only a human alter-ego. That would've limited me to traditional mindsets about what a human should or should not be, as if a certain set of criteria were ever enough to corral the timeless human spirit into a small box meant for identification. That which can be identified can be stored. That which can be stored can be moved. That which can be moved can be removed from sight.
Vaperfox is not removable.
So why a fox? Why not Vaperbot? Vaperangel? Vaperjet?
The animal is necessary.
The animal is necessary because it is what Vaperfox starts as, but not what he becomes. The animal is the core of the being, representative of instincts, inherent traits and a static starting point. But instincts are faulty and lead towards survival, not life. Traits tell you only where you've been and not where you're going. A starting point is only a start insomuch as an end exists.
To what end is Vaperfox?
The end is only a beginning in disguise. To take the animal and make it so much more requires something fierce, different, radical beyond nature. The human mind should not be an end, but a beginning as a starting point for discovery of the alternate layers which rest around our world. A human mind is not enough, so I add the animal to go one way and other additions to cross into succeeding territories.
You cannot be static is you want to live.
Move.

Duroc's mother needs prayers
General | Posted 15 years agoRecently, Duroc said his mother is gravely ill in the hospital with a blood pressure at a dangerous level of about 200/100. He posted this yesterday and I saw it today, so I've yet to see any updates on the situation.
I'm asking for everyone to please pray for Sean's mother and her family. She can use all the prayers she can get.
You can also post your support on Duroc's journal page, located here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1623005/

The prayers worked! Cathy is doing better today.
General | Posted 15 years agoPraise God, Cathy is doing better today. I called my grandmother and she said Cathy has improved since last night.
At 1am, Cathy’s fever broke, leading to her 99 degree temperature today as opposed to her 102 degree temperature yesterday. Her blood pressure has risen from 80 over 39 to 101 over 40, making it a small, but significant improvement. Her skin is no longer pale and she has some color back in her face. They tried to take her off the respirator, but she was having trouble, so they put her back on it, but that’s okay because there’s no need for her to rush this. She needs to take this slowly so God can take time to revitalize her.
Thank you for all of your prayers and encouraging comments. Every single one of them means so much to me.
Little by little, Cathy is showing those doctors how stubborn she really is. I’m not surprised by the fierce spirit God has bestowed upon her. She is my cousin, after all. :)
Here’s a psalm that was given to me by a church after I submitted my prayer request for Cathy. I’ve bolded the parts which I feel directly parallel this situation:
Psalm 103 (A psalm of David) (New Living Translation)
1-Let all that I am praise the LORD;
with my whole heart, I will praise
his holy name.
2-Let all that I am praise the LORD;
may I never forget the good things
he does for me.
3-He forgives all my sins
and heals all my diseases.
4-He redeems me from death
and crowns me with love and tender
mercies.
5-He fills my life with good things.
my youth is renewed like the
eagle’s.
6-The LORD gives righteousness
and justice to all who are treated unfairly.
7-He revealed his character to Moses
and his deeds to the people of Israel.
8-The LORD is compassionate and merciful,
slow to get angry and filled with unfailing
love.
9-He will not constantly accuse us,
nor remain angry forever.
10-He does not punish us for all our sins;
he does not deal harshly with us, as we
deserve.
11-For his unfailing love toward those who fear
him
is as great as the height of the heavens
above the earth.
12-He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.
13-The LORD is like a father to his children,
tender and compassionate to those
who fear him.
14-For he knows how weak we are;
he remembers we are only dust.
15-Our days on earth are like grass;
like wildflowers, we bloom and die.
16-The wind blows, and we are gone—
as though we had never been here.
17-But the love of the LORD remains forever
with those who fear him.
His salvation extends to the children’s
children
18-of those who are faithful to his covenant,
of those who obey his commandments!
19-The LORD has made the heavens his throne;
from there he rules over everything.
20-Praise the LORD, you angels,
you mighty ones who carry out his plans,
listening for each of his commands.
21-Yes, praise the LORD, you armies of angels
who serve him and do his will!
22-Praise the LORD, everything he has created,
everything in all his kingdom.
Let all that I am praise the LORD.
