I really need my head examined...
Posted 12 years agoI really need to check the wiring in my brain... I was reading a history of the dust bowl era and read something about a plague of rabbits. It sparked a weird idea about a plague that turned people into gay bunny bois and shemale bunny girls...
All good things...
Posted 12 years agoI want to apologize for being so quiet lately. After a brief hospital stay in which me and my apendex parted company I've been doing some thinking and coming to a few decisions.
In the next few weeks I'm probably going to be moving the family back into town, or at least by the end of summer. Having to take care of my sister and her family while they get back on their feet has drained me more than I expected, the power company keeps upping the cost on installation and the list goes on. It's just going to be cheaper all around moving the clan into town.
That and hanging around her uncle my niece has picked up more swear words than a merchant marine sailor... Apparently she walked up to their pastor last Sunday and told him she had a, "Fucking awesome time in Sunday school..."

ask us questions!
Posted 12 years agoSo.... Chris, Deven, Ian, and Blain asked me to post this. For the first time the boys are willing to answer any questions you the fans might have. No subject is off limits so ask away!
All things considered...
Posted 12 years agoAll things considered I'm doing well. My sister and her family are settling in here at Zebra. I've spent the last two days building my niece a playhouse and swing set. She's been helping... mostly by running off with the tools. my sister sent me a link to the dodge super bowl commercial on YouTube with Paul Harvy. Said it described me perfectly.
On the power front I figured out a way to use a lawnmower and a car alternator to charge batterys or run the inverters directly. so take that power company! And yes I do carry a swiss army knife and duct tape.
As for building the house... plans have changed a bit there. I took my niece out sledding and it dawned on me, log cabin. Or actually a log house. So what was going to take me four years to build will only take two and cost under 15,000. And I get to use a chainsaw!

Just when you think...
Posted 12 years agoWell here we are again, another update.
First I apologize for going silent again, this last week has been one of the better weeks I've had. After recovering from a primary system failure in the RV's power system, I get a text from sister... My brother in law lost his job and they are being evicted from their apartment and they no place to go. In the background I can hear my 5 year old niece crying her little lungs out that she's to lose all her toys and she'll have to give up her pig-pig (guinea pig) and so on. It was heart rending. So o
it was her Unca Bubba to the rescue. So I spent Sunday getting them all moved out here to "Ice Station Zebra." (what I call my property.)
Of course good deed goes unpunished... On Tuesday I received a nasty but politely worded letter from the county that I now have 120 days to get a septic system put in now that there are two "trailers" on the property. So there went getting power any time soon... Nothing like having your plans being overcome by events. So now I'm looking into getting a small solar setup to recharge batterys and a new generator for what the batterys can't handle.

Another update.
Posted 12 years agoOk just a quick update on how things are going. Well things haven't been so bad. Except for the power issue... Apparently, its going to cost me 3500$ to run power the 77 feet from the main box to my meter box.. At least during the winter months. Something the power company neglected to put in the sales brosure. So its going to be a few months before I'm connected to the grid.
But I have to say that this DC-to-AC power inverter has worked like a champ. Granted it only puts out 800watts. Between the inverter and the RV's onboard 12volt system, I've got enough power to run what I need to run. And I think I found a way to get the low watt generator functional using a bicycle as a starter. The other generator I might be able to convert to run off the wind if I can get the gearing worked out. To be honest I'm starting to feel like a cross between Scotty and Macguyver.

Some days...
Posted 12 years agoJust a little update. The electrician was out last Friday, finally, and the meter box is now installed. Now I am waiting for the power company to send me some paperwork and then I wait for them to come out and hook things up and flip the switch... So hopefully this little saga is almost over.
Otherwise I'm doing well for a change. Except for the other night when I nearly got hypothermia and frost bite stagrazing... I just couldn't resist so clear a sky.

Still alive.
Posted 12 years agoThought I'd give a quick update. I'm still alive and kicking... And, I'd like to apologize to all my friends for being so quiet. I finally got a hold of someone at the power company who seems to know what they're doing and with a little luck I should have power somewhere around the first. I finally had to wire in the DC to AC inverter... I missed the microwave.
Also one of my dogs gave me a good mauling durring play time when I teased him with his bear... He munched my left hand pretty good. An inch long rip right to the bone and a number of puncture wounds... Note to self, do not tease the dog with his bear before dinner time.
Otherwise it's good old frontier living. And a Merry Christmas to everyone!

I really have bad luck...
Posted 13 years agoBad luck and I have always known one another on a first name basis... That said, I thought i'd give a little update on how i'm doing.
The move went pretty well... it was all down hill after that. First is the ongoing problem of getting the power company to actually get their butts out and hook things up. Then I nearly freeze myself in a blizzard refueling one of the generators. Next, the day before thanksgiving the high wattage generator goes out. But, I had a low wattage generator as back up. Yesterday the low wattage generator ate and shredded the pull starter and all its hardware... And of course, they no longer make replacement hardware for that model. So now I'm down to the RV's batteries to supply power. At least it's enough to run the heater and lights as well as keep this semi smart phone charged. Thank god for the CD player and audio books!

I'm another year older today...
Posted 13 years agoYup, another year older. It wouldn't bother me except I found a couple of gray hairs...
And so it begins...
Posted 13 years agoToday the moving process begins and so does the next great adventure in my life! Starting this morning I'll be going dark while I get settled in. With any luck I'll be back either at the end of October or sometime in November. I'll miss all of you and I'll see you on the other side! *sings, "Happy trails to you, keep smilling until then..."*
