I've been getting a lot of notes pouring in my inbox about commissions and I'm having trouble managing them all, so my queue is currently closed. If we have already begun discussing the details of a commission that isn't listed below yet, don't fret, I'll still add you to my queue once we get everything worked out. Next time I open I'm going to have a new system in place for managing commission details, one that will help me stay more organized than merely using notes on FA. I'll post a journal with the information on that once I'm open again.

Given some recent issues I've been having with the site, I'm considering pulling the plug on my Patreon account. But I didn't want to do this out of the blue, I wanted to talk with you guys first about it.

You are why I am able to sit here and produce art for a living. Patreon itself is not the reason, but that's not what Jack Conte, the CEO of Patreon seems to think. I came across an article which was written at the end of January about an interview with Jack. He appears to be laboring under the delusion that it is Patreon itself which is providing all this money for creators, and not the generosity of their followers.

"The company is on track to pay out $500 million to content creators in 2019, pushing the company to surpass $1 billion in payouts since its inception in 2013."

What that SHOULD read is, 'the company is on track to take a cut from $500 million that would be paid to content creators.' Patreon does not provide that money. Their Patron user base does. And they're getting upset that their piece of the pie isn't bigger.

Patreon doesn't provide the content that its users pay for. All Patreon does is facilitate a transaction. One could argue that they host the website and the images I post on there, but I don't necessarily need them for that. I know of other artists who use Patreon for payments and host their actual content elsewhere, setting up a Drop Box account or creating mailing lists for their art or something like that.

There is only one service that I need Patreon to provide for me and that is a service they're getting sloppy at. These past few months it has taken longer and longer for them to finish processing their payments. They have one job I need them to do, and they're not doing it well. So I'm heavily considering closing up shop and relying more on commissions until I look into another option. Ko-fi maybe. It was fun while it lasted though, and I appreciate all the support my Patrons have given me this past year.

I was abused as a child. My biological father was a violent alcoholic and he used to beat me. I was picked on mercilessly from elementary school to middle school, until I finally took the initiative and beat one of those bastards up. I felt alone and isolated in my late middle school and high school years while I was coming to terms with being gay. I put myself through the hardship of a long distance relationship during my college years. After graduating, I finally saved enough to uproot my life and move across the country to be with him. And in the few years of living in California, we pretty much lost everything. Penniless, we moved back to the Midwest in an apartment my parents had to cosign for, with nothing but what we could cram in a few suitcases.

We still live in that apartment. The appliances are old and temperamental. Sometimes they leak, and sometimes they just don't work. I'm still buried in college debt, which I took on to get a degree for a job I was all but promised, and ended up never getting. I sometimes get anxiety attacks and migraine headaches. Every time we get together my family constantly fights with each other about the dumbest little things. I drive my dad's rusty old pickup truck that's on the verge of falling apart, and I can't afford another car right now. Everyday the news tells me the world is going to end and that things are as bad as they've ever been. My friends parrot this mentality whenever we get together for game night.

And despite all that, I sit here today drinking my coffee and find that I am happy.

I share this with you partially because my old Christmas journal was still up and I needed to post something new, and also because I see so many people who are so miserable day after day after day.
Everyone is miserable in one way or another.
But what separates the happy people from the miserable ones?
The trick is to not let it define you.

So the trailer from The Last of Us 2 got me thinking about the franchise; particularly about some tough conversations that I'm wondering if they'll put in the game or not. I'm gonna talk about some spoilers and such from the first game so if you haven't played it yet and are still wanting to, read no further.

So at the end of the first game, Joel makes a comprehensively immoral decision. Throughout the game, he is trying to deliver Ellie to this group called the Fireflies. When he arrives, he learns that they want to operate on Ellie, performing an autopsy to try and learn what makes her immune to the Clicker spores and hopefully devise a cure. Instead of letting his happen, Joel kills the doctors along with the leader of their group, and flees with an unconscious Ellie in tow.

Ellie wakes up in a hospital gown in the backseat of the car he stole while they're driving down the road. She asks him 'what happened', and he says that they weren't looking for a cure anymore. That people were becoming naturally immune, and it was only a matter of time before humanity regains its footing. He lies about what happened, and Ellie's following body language seems to indicate she knows he's lying. She even gives him a second chance to tell the truth later, but he sticks to the lie.

Throughout the game, Joel bonded with Ellie, and started seeing her as a surrogate daughter, replacing his own who died at the start of the game. Joel was then presented with a situation in which he was asked to sacrifice his own happiness for the greater good of humanity. He was either unwilling or unable to do so. In light of this, the title 'The Last of Us' seems rather sinister, as it feels like Joel just doomed humanity to extinction.

So cut to the recent trailer. It's years later, Ellie is older, and we know Joel is still around as someone refers to him as Ellies 'old man.' It's at a dance of some sort where Ellie shares an intimate moment with another woman, which culminates in a kiss. We as a player already know that Ellie is at least somewhat into girls via DLC from the first game. But is Joel aware of this? I am wondering if Joel feels any guilt or remorse for what he did in the first game, guilt which he possibly assuages by telling himself that if he keeps Ellie safe, and she grows up to start her own family and has children, that she'll pass her immunity on to them. And them to their children and so on. If this is what he told himself, how would he react to the news that Ellie seems to prefer the company of other women, and would therefore be less likely to have children in the future?

In light of this news, would Joel come clean? Would he tell Ellie what he did, and urge her to have children so she can pass her immunity onto a new generation? I think this would be a very interesting confrontation, because he would be essentially asking Ellie to do what he himself could not do in the first game: sacrifice her happiness for the good of humanity. If Ellie chooses not to have children, it again gives that title a dark tone: The Last of Us. Would she do it? Could she do it? SHOULD she do it? I don't know, it's a very interesting moral question, and I felt like sharing it.

Now, there's one more thing I want to talk about, and it's gonna be a touchy subject. But it's something I've noticed and wanted to comment on. I'm not saying this is the way things SHOULD be, but that it's just the way things have been in our history. Anywho, I wanted to talk about all the violence against women in these trailers for the new game. Between the three trailers we've seen, there is a noticeable amount of women that are fighting and being killed; certainly more than I can recall being in the first game at least. Historically speaking, women generally weren't the soldiers or hunters. If the women were fighting and dying, that meant something had gone horribly wrong. Granted, in this game things HAVE gone horribly wrong. Nearly everyone is dead. But does the increased presence of women among the ranks of enemy combatants mean things have gone even worse since the first game? Are humanity's numbers dwindling even lower that now every able bodied adult is needed in the field? Again, this gives the title that ominous ring: The Last of Us.

This is largely a hypothetical tangent of thought I went on, and I wanted to share it. I think it would be very interesting, if not downright impressive for the game to bring up and touch on these subjects. Whether or not they will, I guess only time will tell.

So a lot of talk has been happening about the upcoming Thundercats reboot, 'Thundercats Roar'. Cartoons and art are things I care about, so I thought I'd throw my two cents in on the matter. I've posted a tweet about it which can be found here, but given the size limitations on tweets, I figured I'd pontificate a bit more on the subject here.

Some people are criticizing Thundercats Roar for being more of the same as far as cartoons go in recent years, and I have to agree. If you compare Cartoon Network's current lineup to the same number of its earliest shows, there is a noticeable lack of artistic diversity. Now, this is not to say that today's cartoons are inherently inferior because of this, but people start to get bored of seeing the same art style/list of facial expressions again and again. It's visually tiring.

A lot of these shows use the same template: a bean-shaped head, big round eyes, a 'cucumber' smile, and either thick rounded arms and legs or 'noodle limbs'. When you look at these earlier cartoons you have a vast array of different body sizes and shapes, as well as a range of extreme facial expressions. A lot of them also have unique styles of line art. Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Lab both had bolder, visually striking outlines. This is something the current Powerpuff Girls remake ditched in favor of the pencil-thin lines that have recently been popularized. Ed Edd and Eddy had a very interesting art style with lines varying thickness that shifted constantly, even when characters were still. And Samurai Jack did away with outlines all together!

A show is created with its art style in mind. They go hand in hand. Thundercats is a previously existing property with its own mood and tone, and many people don't think this new style suits it well. It's being turned into what appears to be an Adventure Time clone. Now, I love Adventure Time. But that doesn't mean I want every other show to mold itself in its likeness. When you look at this reboot, along with the new Powerpuff Girls show, it seems Cartoon Network has gotten too comfortable with itself. They seem to be afraid to try new things, and I think the creativeness of cartoons is suffering as a result.

Apparently there is a lot of scamming happening on Tumblr right now. People are making pages to impersonate artists and are sending out DMs saying they are offering special deals on commissions. They then ask for payment up front and vanish. I just wanted to help get this out there.

Incidentally, if I ever contact you via note or DM or whatever and ask you to commission me, then it's probably not me. I don't do that. I make journals and other public announcements, and then let commissioners approach me on their own. I also usually do not ask for payment up front. Waiting until the art is done is a good motivator to get it finished, and since I charge by the hour, sometimes I'm able to get a pic done faster than the time I quoted. The only time I would even consider asking for payment up front is either if I've worked with someone before and we had payment issues (and that happens very rarely) or if I've heard concerning things about a commissioner from other artists. So keep this in mind, folks!

This is such a stupid thing, but on my Curious Cat profile, I dared answer the question 'You voted for Donald Trump, right? Do you still support him?' with something other than 'No, I hate Trump! He's the Anti-Christ and civilization as we know it is coming to an end!' I should have went with my gut and deleted it without answering, but I didn't. Wasn't that stupid of me. Now I have people 'calling me out' on Twitter like they caught me with my hand in the cookie jar or something.

Politics are something I generally do not talk about because they are so polarizing. It always ends in a fight, and nobody ever changes anyone else's mind. I haven't talked about politics on here since I posted this journal after the election, so I do not know why or how this came about.

This isn't going to be as long as my last political journal, because I still stand by everything I said before, and I'm not sorry now. YES, I think Trump is doing an 'alright job.' While he's made some mistakes in my opinion and I do not agree with everything he's done, he has done a lot of good for this country and our economy, and I think he gets an unfair rep from the media. As I said last time, major news outlets are to blame for how volatile and touchy a subject this has become. A few years ago nobody even cared about this stuff and now it's all anyone wants to talk about. If you don't agree with someone 100% then you've got a fight on your hands. It's stupid, and I hate it.

Political beliefs are but one minor facet of a person. Or they should be. If you put so much stock into this stuff that you let it rule your life then I feel sorry for you.

As with last time, this is not an invitation for debate. I just wanted to throw this out there. I will not be responding to any comments to this journal, regardless of their nature.

Welp, another year has come and gone, which is weird, because it doesn't feel like it was that long ago when I was writing a journal like this for last year : T
Looking back, I think I did pretty good! I've improved a lot with my work and I've been drawing and posting a lot more too, especially in the fall! I think August-October were my strongest months this year. Things kind of tapered off a bit after that though. For those of you who don't know, DJ and myself have been dealing with some health problems since November. Nothing too serious, but it hasn't been making things easy and it's been affecting our work.

For last year's resolutions, I said I was going to set up a Patreon account (which I did, yaaaay), and I said I was going to be more prolific with sketching and doodles, which I kind of did? But probably not to the extent that I wanted to. I also said I would try to be more active on my other media, which, I think I did for Twitter, kind of. But not so much for Tumblr, and I kind of dropped Furry Network. DJ and I have also both been eating better and making better choices, and have shed a fair amount of weight since then, so that's just icing on the cake! I myself have put a bit back on after the holidays, but hey, that happens. I lost it once, I can lose it again.

This year, I'm going to renew that resolution to sketch and doodle more, and I'm going to try and be more consisting with my posting on Patreon. There was only one month where I got all four posts in that I wanted to do, October, and the rest were only one or two updates. I actually haven't posted ANYTHING on there this month, and probably am not going to, but that's why I don't do flat monthly charges for patrons, I shouldn't be taking money for months I don't post as much. (Or at all x.x) Starting January I'm going to try and keep with the intended one post a week, and hopefully that will smooth out my work flow. I need to work on my scheduling and time management skills anyways. So here's to hoping I can pull it off, and 2018 will be an even better year than this one.
