Microsoft OneDrive warning
Posted a month agoYesterday I received the fright of my life. Opening my laptop, I found that all of my file folders were GONE - not there! We're talking of a good twenty-five years of writing simply vanished.
To back up just a little bit, not long ago I got a new computer. It came with Windows 11. Within this innocent looking device was an evil trap titled OneDrive. I am not all that computer savvy, and it took me three days to set up this laptop. During that time, I do not remember being asked to, or setting up something called OneDrive. I have an external hard drive I use for backing up, so I neither needed it, or wanted it.
Essentially, I do not like my life's work hanging about on the internet, where God alone knows who can snag it at will.
Apparently, however, OneDrive was there, and doing something, so I ignored it. Then came the little notes; 'Your memory is full, you need to upgrade for X amount of money, or you could lose files.'
I never wanted it, I didn't use it, so I ignored it. In my mind, my files were safe within my computer's hard drive. The little red X's next to my file folders were, however, beginning to get on my nerves.
Yesterday the trap sprung, nearly ripping out my heart. I immediately blamed it on myself. Trying to get rid of OneCloud must have pissed off the computer gods, or something.
I wasn't too distressed, as I do have my external hard drive, but I still would have lost a good three months of 'stuff'.
Fortunately, my son is good with computers, and he lives close by. In about half an hour's time, he figured out I had to PAY Microsoft a ransom of ONLY a few dollars, for the memory UPGRADE. I guess calling it that makes this legitimate and not blackmail/extortion.
So, I just wanted to get this warning out there. For now, I shall go back to sipping my coffee, and getting my house back in order.
For the record - Microsoft Windows 11 is horrible. It comes with all sorts of things YOU DO NOT NEED, and so many built in problems it makes you grit your teeth quite frequently. I suppose it is a good thing that some of my teeth or not real. Like good old Jonathon Winters, I have a dog's tooth in there somewhere.

Megaplex info
Posted 2 months agoBorrowing this from ARCR-CRrc who borrowed it from AndreaJae who borrowed it from Walt46.
Convention attending: Megaplex
Days staying: Saturday - Monday
Who are you rooming with? Staying off site.
Where will you be? Mainly at the convention center.
How is the best way to find you? Look for the Fennec ears of my hat, and I will most likely be on my scooter racing Vrghr on his.
What do you look like? Like a happy old guy - which I am.
What is your gender? 'Old Guy' denotes male. Vixyy, my writing pseudonym has always been female.
How old are you? Ancient! I'll be 73 this year.
Can I talk to you? I'm an untouchable prima donna... KIDDING! Of course you can - especially about writing.
Can I hug and/or snuggle you? Being in the fandom, I kinda got used to hugs, but warn me first. Snuggles are totally reserved for the wife.
Are you nice? I'm told I am.
If I see you, how should I get your attention? 'Hey Vixyy.' works.
What can't we talk about? Politics, religion, and if the subject does not suit me, I will change the subject.
Can I get you something to drink? Thanks, but that's not required.
Can I take your picture? I can't think of why you might want to, but warn me first.
Attending any events? I will attend Kiyo's panel among a handful of other things - BUT YOU WILL DEFINITELY FIND ME SUNDAY MORNING AT THE GRAYMUZZLE BREAKFAST! - Sunday morning at 0700 in the diner, just like last year.

Pulled Back in Time
Posted 3 months agoThere are times when, from out of nowhere, you will hear a song play, and you are immediately pulled back in time to the exact place you first heard it.
This one took me to 1973. I was on the CGC Sorrel, and we were moored in Anchorage, Alaska. I was standing quarterdeck watch on the ship's bridge. The reason for this was the huge tidal swing, which was a good twenty feet. At high tide we had a standard house ladder running down from the quarterdeck, and at low tide it was running up from the pier to the bridge wing.
It was night, and a low light situation for night vision. My only company was a small FM radio, which I had tuned to the only station I could get. And then this song came on.
Fairport Convention - 'Polly on the Shore' (it's about as seafaring as you can get.)

Nature is wonderful - sharing a smile
Posted 4 months agoEvery morning, I have a routine, part of which is feeding the raccoons. These are our neighbors, and except for digging holes in my yard, they are polite, and very well behaved.
Yes, we name them all. Pretty much, when I'm handing out cookies, I will say something to each.
There is one particular raccoon I named Mama. Truthfully, I had no idea male or female... but... this morning she came out with two babies following her. That just warmed my heart.
The routine goes like this - dogs walk first - feed raccoons second - dogs walk again when they're done.
Well, I was out there with the dogs, and looked down to find a grape tomato in the grass; and here is the mystery - I'm not presently growing any tomatoes of any sort, except for those still in the seedling state.
I'm guessing someone brought me a present.
During the course of growing, sometimes I will toss some of my tomatoes, those not in great shape, back into the woods. I am now thinking some of them might have sprouted plants. This particular tomato was perfect. It had perfect coloring, and there were no teeth marks or claw marks to be seen. There it was, just laying on the ground.
I ate it. It was good.
I wasn't going to grow any of the grape tomatoes this time, but now I think I will have to.

Something Funny Happened on the way to the Dog Park
Posted 5 months agoDo NOT give your dog coffee. It's considered poisonous to canines.
I had no idea. When I have my morning coffee, both dogs get some too. It's our morning routine, and it only amounts to about half a cup and a heavy splash of 1/2 & 1/2.
Long story short, Kona began acting 'not normal'; becoming clingy and withdrawn any time we had company. So, worried, I took her to the vet. They had no idea, but ran a blood test which came back with a very elevated liver something or other. So... no more coffee, and she's on meds - and - 'You need to get us a urine sample.'
I asked if I could give them some of mine, and that didn't even get a laugh.
They gave me a kit which was a small plastic tray with little divet looking things on the bottom, a syringe with no needle, and a glass tube.
OK... and what do we do with this?
'You have to follow your dog when she goes out, and slide the tray under her so she can pee on it. Then use the syringe to suck it up and put it in the glass tube.'
rightttttttttt.... so I open the door, armed with said tray, and follow her. She squats down, and I make to slide the tray under. She looks up all startled like (wish I had a picture of her face) and in doggy style, yells out, 'WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!'
She's then off like a rocket with me following trying to get to her before she can pee without the tray.
This morning, I took it to the Vet, only to be told it's no good because it's not fresh.
Guess what I get to do again.

Gardening
Posted 5 months agoSo then, as a form of relaxation, I keep a bit of a garden in the backyard. Mostly I get tomatoes, but this year I'm shooting for much more.
The funny thing - God seems to have joined in. With this being a very dry season, my backyard is a dust bowl. Adding to this, the raccoons dig for worms, and for a while there were no end to holes all over. We found the solution by buying one of those air driven dancing guys. We've been leaving him dance all night - and no more holes.
As to God's garden, since I'm trying to grow my backyard grass back, I've not cut anything. Lo and behold, I have no end to wild cabbage, and dill plants. I have no idea where they came from. The leaves of the cabbage plants are quite tasty.
It reminds me of a time when I was young, and we knew a family from Lebanon. There was a large picnic one weekend, and she had all the kids go out and pick wild grape leaves. She then made us stuffed wild grape leaves, and were they ever good.
Still waiting for the uploads to begin (like everyone else).
Till then,
*hugs to all...

Info for Writers
Posted 6 months agoGood Morning,
(At least it is morning here, and the coffee is good. The coffee is by Barnies Coffee, and named Santa's White Christmas. We've been drinking it for years.)
That's all an 'aside', but when you have something that's good, you tend wanting to share it... and that's what this is all about - sharing.
After nursing my old computer along for a few years now - superglue, new covers, stop drilling cracks, and no spring left in the cover so it sort of flopped around on my lap - I got a new laptop. You might laugh, but it's pretty much the same as my old laptop (Lenovo) just faster, thinner, and minus the things making me crazy for all of these years. Never fear, it has more than enough new things to make me crazy. I went from a Windows 10 to an 11. Getting my massive amount of data transferred was not easy, and took a good amount of time. Thankfully, I have a two terabyte external hard drive. For the record - DVD's would NOT NEVER CORRUPT, but of course those went out of style. This one has corrupted in the past, and but for the fact it was a backup, I might have been in real trouble. (wiped it - reformatted - now working fine)
Windows 11 - honestly, I use the product, but do not particularly care for the money sucking plots and ploys they have. For instance, I have never trusted 'the cloud', being you are putting all of your stuff out there for hackers and Microsoft to help themselves to at their leisure. So - the computer tells me I have never proceeded with the cloud and I have X amount of free memory to back up with - CLICK HERE.
click
YOU HAVE RUN OUT OF MEMORY - CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE MORE!
Oh hell no! It then took me a good amount of wasted time to figure out how to kill it.
After finally getting things settled to where I was sort of happy (like moving into a new house, and my garage is still full of boxes not gone through) I find out I can't transfer my Microsoft Office. I was using 2007 and totally happy with it. Bummer - the new laptop does not have a DVD drive. Long story short, Microsoft is a total sham. What you can buy is way overpriced, and then you have that cheap LEASE they offer - DO NOT CLICK ON THAT or you will be paying them forever.
Doing some research, I found a FREE open source office platform called LibreOffice, and it is wonderful.
https://www.libreoffice.org/donate/.....Win_x86-64.msi
All that stuff the other guy wants you to pay for is there, and IT IS COMPATIBLE; meaning all the files you have are usable.
Now then - I am still learning all of the new stuff. The one thing I am very happy about is the laptop will Bluetooth to my hearing aides.
OK - time to go and make the breakfast, so I'll leave it there. Forward to the future, and all of that. As a 'by the way' - I am so old that when I was a child, a key pounder typewriter was 'then' tech, and the NEW electric typewriters were just beginning to show up. Phones were rotary operated, and I could call anywhere in town by dialing just four numbers. My uncle still had a phone you picked up and asked the operator to dial the number for you... and Perry Mason was actually thin.

This little vid moved me to tears
Posted 9 months agoHappy February
Posted 9 months agoI just noticed we got through January. Yes it has been a rough start to the year.
Aside from that, an old artist friend posted up a journal yesterday.
C-Viralus
As with most of us, life has given her some twists and turns, but now she is back, and for that, I am truly happy. She is an excellent artist and has done illustration work for me that I have always been tickled with. She is available for anyone who might need an illustrator, and I would whole heartedly recommend her. (she is formerly Art-From-The-Heart)
Do check out her gallery.

update - sort of, maybe, kinda
Posted 9 months agoHi, all!
I've noticed my English counterpart
seadragon did an update on our & his writing. That got me to thinking perhaps I should do the same just as a courtesy. Some of this is cut & paste, but I do feel it appropriate. Since Dragon and I have been writing together (a long time now), it's like our minds are in sinque most of the times.
update follows:
Been a long while since I did one of these, so I'll take a moment to thank everyone that's been keeping up with Whalsay.
Erlandia:
Myself and Vixyy have been on a recent push to try and get the trilogy published. We've had some recent interest, but nothing we can move forward with. I think we might have to start thinking about KDP on that. In the meantime, if you want to read the unedited first drafts, they're all in my gallery in the relevant folder. Just look for the section that says "The Erlandia Saga" and start with book 1. It's not a furry story, so don't expect anything on that front, but it does have murder, revenge, piracy, among other intriguing shenanigans. (*Vixyy here - it's really good.)
Bryn's War
Ah yes, the page one rewrite of what was originally a series of
thursdayprompt shorts. It's the story of an anthro fox (among others) in space. Get the idea of Starfox/Lylat Wars out of your head. This is about a recovering alcoholic vulpine engineer who, after leaving the military, works as the chief engineering officer of a quaint cargo ship. There's relatively recent pop culture references and my own twisted brand of humour thrown into the mix, plus I delve into hypothetical physics, not to mention the occasional zero gravity cum-shot. I'm joking about that last bit, btw. Or am I? Again, it is in its own folder in my gallery. It's only a few parts in, but it will eventually be a full novel. (*Vixyy - this one is equally good.)
Whalsay and the Wulver
Another collaborative novel between myself and Vixyy. We've ventured into Celtic/Scottish folklore, fantasy, and misadventure. A far cry from the open seas and a swinging hammock aboard the Erlandia, that's for sure. Most of the parts are, again, in my gallery. Look for the appropriate folder.
*Vixyy - OK, back again.
Like everyone, I have recently been having ups and downs for whatever reasons. Those are nothing I won't work through. I do apologize for my slow reading of the prompters. I do have to get back on the ball just a little bit more.
On the plus side, I had lunch with an old writing friend today; Phil Geusz. He hasn't written anything in a time now, but that doesn't change the fact we're two peas in a pod. Having lunch with him always helps me decompress.
Now then - if you are not watching
seadragon you should be. He's good.
Cheers,
Vix

The Wild Robot
Posted a year agoHello all...
Just got back from the movies where I enjoyed (immensely) and a showing of 'The Wild Robot'. I found this to be an awesome movie. Simply put, I found none of the negatives that have been showing up in movies lately. There was no bad language, there was a solid plot, AND THERE WAS A FOX!!!!!
Seriously, if you are looking for a movie to watch, I would highly suggest this one.

Meaplex - a Graymuzzle's report
Posted a year agoSince I first began coming to this con almost ten years ago, it has grown into hugeness. I am told we had over 7200 attendees this year. When I heard this, my jaw dropped - but it truly is believable just from the size of the facility, which was full at peek times.
On a personal note, I have to thank my wife for saving me from myself.
'Are to taking my scooter?'
'Nahhhhh... I should be good.'
'Put the scooter in you car.'
'Yes dear.'
Friday, after retiring to my car for a quick lunch, I decided to break that scooter out and ride. (and good thing too) The distance from the parking garage to the con area was a good quarter of a mile. Then, the run from the entry point to the dealer's den was about the same. Even with the scooter, I was quickly exhausted. When I got home, she smiled, listening to my tales, fed me two slices of pizza, and then watched me pass out on the couch. (and that's leaving early)
SUGGESTION!!! If you are older, or have a mobility issue, look into renting a scooter if you do not own one. (I am looking at a certain Wolf as I say this.) They are available, as I saw one or two, and the hotel has a footbridge to the Orange County Convention Center, where I know for sure they have them.
I certainly enjoyed all of the things I attended, but the thing I enjoyed the most was simply rubbing elbows with the friends I have in here who attended. This includes a VR chat visit with an Australian friend I've known for a long time; arranged for us by another of our friends.
This leads me into a mention of the Graymuzzle Breakfast which we do every year. Yes, 0700 on a Sunday morning is not doable for most con attendees (and the event is open to everyone), but we have so much fun just sitting and chatting. This year, Clayton, probably the oldest among us, came through in a big way. He was there and checked with the manager of the hotel's diner, telling him about our gathering. The manager smiled and said, 'Come on in, we've got plenty of room.'
We were there for two hours and the food was great.
I'm almost recovered. I say almost, because, though the body might be back up to full charge, a good part of me is still thinking about all the friends I got to hang out with.
The really wonderful thing about the con - we furs are such a friendly bunch. This was told to me by more than one stranger I spoke with.
I am hoping that next year the children will be allowed back again. I say this in the thought of my granddaughter coming over for dinner Monday night wearing Fox ears, paws, and a tail. She wore them for me, and I did indeed smile.

What he said...
Posted a year agoWriters get little to no attention for the obvious reason that people have stopped taking the time to read.
helixthefallen said it so well - https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/10928659/
If you take the time to read, as well as look with your eyes, you will find this site has a plenitude of competent authors.
Now go - read - be happy.

'IF' - a movie review
Posted a year agoFirst and foremost, to my way of thinking, this is a five star movie.
WARNING: DO NOT TAKE YOUNG GRANDCHILDREN (as we did) TO SEE THIS MOVIE. There are no gunfights, explosions, car chases, and so forth, so when it comes to the slower parts where you're busy crying your eyes out, their annoying little voices will find your ears with, 'I'mmmm thirstyyyyy.'
This movie is about 'imaginary friends', and if you live with yours as I do with mine, it will solidly pluck at your heart strings.
The animation is good, as is the setup to the movie, and yes I also laughed quite a bit.
I understood the movie got off to a bad start because people are totally suspicious of anything Disney or Disneyesk these days, but Paramount Pictures apparently got the message - there is nothing woke about this movie at all. It is also heartfelt and very enjoyable.
Now - a moment to discuss something. The movie theaters are going broke. I totally understand this, and a few of the reasons why (aside from all the movies being churned out that really stink).
Start time was 11:00. First you have to sit through no less than a solid 30 minutes of commercials - one after the next after the next. Way back when, you paid for a ticket and all you got was the movie.
Next, you have to sit through the coming attractions (which are not too bad) and then more commercials.
Andddddd... as a by the way... they're coming out with a remake of the Wizard of Oz, and in the modern way of things, the wicked witch is actually the good guy, while the wizard and all of his cronies are the bad guys. Reallyyyyyyyyyy????
It truly is a pity the writers, or AI, or whatever it is they're using these days can't come up with an original story.
