Posted 10 years ago(One Aquafara, multiple Aquafarin.)
General Info:
Aquafarin are a semi-aquatic species, able to live both on land and in the water. (Except the deep sea Aquafarin who could only survive on land for very short amounts of time.) They have large fins protruding from their lower backs and sensory antenna from their foreheads. There are three different types, each living in their own habitat. These types are the freshwater, deep sea, and the coastal.
Other General Info:
Females of the species generally outnumber the males.
Females have fins on the backs of their calfs, while males do not.
Both genders have decorative fins that grow around their shoulder blades.
It is uncommon for them to be born to two different types of Aquafarin, but not impossible.
Height: Their average height is about 6 to 7ft, but their weight varies because of the variety of fin sizes and tails.
Diet: Though their diet mainly consists of fish and meats, they are omnivorous and can enjoy any kind of food.
Lifespan: An outstanding elder Aquafara can live to be up to 150, but average age is around 130. They become mature around the age of 20 to 25, and elders at the age of 100.
About breathing water:
Freshwater and coastal Aquafarin are fine swimming in the ocean or pools, they just wouldn't be able to breathe underwater. The salt water and chorine would be painful (and toxic) to 'inhale'. Their gills on their torso are designed to be able to seal 'shut' for when they are out of the water and breathing air, so the same is true if they were to go swimming in the ocean. Deep sea Aquafara, however, are completely adapted to living underwater, so their air-breathing lungs are small and cannot be used for long periods of time out of the water.
Antenna:
Their antenna function in that they can sense living things with them. Like a sixth sense. They're mostly for hunting for fish/food, ect. but they can also sense other aquafarin nearby.
Deep sea Aquafarin rely on theirs the most, while others consider them more of a decoration in these modern times.
Reproduction and younglings:
In finding a partner, each type of Aquafarin has their own customs. Female coastal aquafarin like to decorate their home with colorful sea life, (like starfish, pearls, oyster shells, ect.) to attract mates, deep sea aquafarin sing, and freshwater aquafarin like to bring their potential partners hand crafted gifts. Other than that, they court mostly like humans do.
They do have sexual intercourse (with human-like reproductive organs, though the male's penis is usually ribbed or studded with a knot), and the female's ovulation cycle is seasonal. They are fertile once in the spring, and once in the winter for a few days at a time. If successfully fertilized, the female gives birth to one egg which she watches over for a month until it hatches. The young are fairly helpless when newly hatched and need to be breastfed for another month. Because of the low chance of successful fertilization, if a couple wants to have a youngling they will frequently mate around the time of the female's ovulation.
Deep sea Aquafarin will travel to warmer, shallow waters when searching for a mate or incubating an egg.
Younglings are rare and treasured by all Aquafarin.
COASTAL- Most Aquafarin live along the tropical coastline, spending their time around tide pools and along the bottom of rocky sea-side cliffs. Their fins are tough and rigid for climbing around the sharp rocks, and their colors are bright and vivid for attracting the attention of potential partner. Their ears are smaller, like an otter's, and tails are shorter than other Aquafarin. They often have small scales along their bellies and arms, as well as multicolored eyes.
Social: These tend to claim their own territory, either defending it like a prize, or welcoming potential partners. Most often when searching for a partner they will decorate their territory with a variety of colorful sea life, like starfish and oyster shells.
Enjoys: Relaxing in warm tide pools.
Dislikes: Drying out completely.
Precious possessions: Pearls.
DEEP SEA- The rarest of Aquafarin live exclusively in the depths of the ocean. Their eyes are clouded from the darkness and they no longer rely on sight. (They can 'see', but to us it would look like shapes and colors with no definition.) Instead, they sense things around them with their highly sensitive antenna. Their colors are more muted and dull, so to attract or find another of their kind, they sing. They cannot leave the ocean for long, but it is not impossible for them to visit the shores.
Social: These Aquafarin wander the seas in pairs, most commonly with their life partner and/or youngling. They meet strangers with caution and shy away from large groups.
Enjoys: Traveling the sea.
Precious possessions: Singing voice.
FRESHWATER- The second most common Aquafarin live around rivers and lakes of the inland. Their fins are more abundant and occur in a wider variety of shapes and lengths. The more decorated, the more attractive to others. They often have long, pointed ears.
Social: They are more social than their other two relatives, preferring to live together in clans of four to six depending on the size of the body of water they reside in.
Enjoys: Hunting fish.
Precious possessions: River stones.
Mature and adult art is allowed and encouraged.
