Random advice for new + up and coming artists
General | Posted 2 weeks agoJust some random thoughts as I chip away at some commissions of my own here...
If you're a new artist and your ambition is to take commissions, my advice would be to treat every commission like it's a tryout for a larger piece. A lot of the time, my clients like to order a less expensive commission, and if they're happy with what I gave them, THEN they return for the larger ticket items. It's rare that a client goes straight for the big ticket stuff right off the cuff. They'll start with maybe a sketch, a YCH, or a 1-character finished piece first.
The hard work is not over if you land a big ticket commission, of course. You still want to do an excellent job so that A) you have a happy client that will return for more in the future, and B) you'll have a strong piece in your portfolio to show to more potential clients.

Art making/money making still unbalanced
General | Posted 5 months agoWhelp, I started the year promising myself that I'd find financial stability to go with my art making, but I'm afraid I've swung too far into the money making direction now. I make a good living, but my art has suffered, and making art is really what makes me happy. I just don't have the time that I used to since I work 6 days a week in a physically demanding job. :/ I'll probably dip once I make a nice little nest egg of $$$ to live on, but it's not the long term solution I was hoping for.
There's always the possibility of trying to make enough money on my art alone, but I don't know if I'm necessarily down with the commission hustling business as a sole source of income. It seems too volatile to really make a living and not have to be worrying all the time about when and where my next paycheck will come from. Ideally, I'd love to have a stable job that doesn't suck the soul from my bones while leaving enough time to make art.
My goal is to get back to making long form comics again, but I can't do that just yet.

Mini comic ideas!! + Chapter 5 update
General | Posted 8 months agoSo, i'll just give it to you straight; chapter 5 is still a ways off. Changes in my personal life as well as rebooting my characters at the beginning of this year has added even more complications as I try to write and finish this story. I definitely want to finish it, and I still believe the best parts of the story are yet to come, but in the meantime I need to figure out what form this rebooted Wastelanders universe even looks like.
So, in the immediate future, and to get me back into the swing of making comics, I'm planning a few one-off stories. They will ideally start and finish in about the size of a regular Wastelander Drex chapter. I would love for these to be little digestible stories that don't require a ton of knowledge of backstory to enjoy, nor the huge time commitment of a multi-chapter story. Kind of like episodes of a TV show like tuning in every week for Batman: The Animated Series.
Here are some of my ideas, and I would love to hear which of these stories interest you the most down in the comments...
1. Drex wakes up in the middle of the night when he hears a crash in the room next door. Suspecting that they are being raided, Drex rushes in only to discover that Annie had already subdued the interloper. But, the intruder's intentions were not what they first seemed...
2. Drex develops a cure for Annie’s condition, but the process in which the new experimental serum is created harbors a dark secret. Drex must now present Annie with his findings, unsure of how Annie will react.
3. While on vacation, Drex and Annie are attacked by a mutant who can amplify and control their own bio-electricity. But, it turns out that this attack was anything but random, as the attacker is revealed to be an important figure from Annie’s past.
4. Overhearing a radio talk show, Annie becomes enraged when a scientist with a vendetta against Drex attempts to slander Drexcorp under false pretenses. Annie sets out on her own to “set things right”, and Drex must stop her before she does something she’ll regret.
5. (Prequel) When Drex develops a new mutagenic compound that gives ordinary people superpowers (DX-14), the duo faces a reckoning when a violent gang uses it to seize power in the Wasteland.

In-case you were wondering why it’s a special day for me, it’s Annie’s canonical birthday, but also the day that I began sharing my slime/gooey art. In many ways it was the day I decided to stop hiding who I really was and just be my weird self on the internet, and hope that some people would embrace it. And to my surprise, there were others out there just like me. Who would have thought?
It’s not coincidence that one of the main themes of Wastelander Drex (the comic) is about emerging from a lonely, isolated planet to find a place in the universe where they belong. I’m very grateful to have my own little community that rallies around me and my work. So thank you for being a friend or a fan, it really does mean a lot to me. <3
But today’s not about Drex, it’s all about the big gooey green bear herself, and she's got a cool new redesign and some new art to celebrate the occasion! I hope you love her new look; I certainly do. Check out all the new art below:

Life Update/Sunsetting Patreon
General | Posted a year agoWell friends, the past few months has been a reckoning of sorts for me. If I were to sum up my personal life in a nutshell, it would be a constant battle between the things that make me happy versus the things that actually make money, and the next phase of my life is having to reconcile these two things in some way. In a perfect world, I could support myself with my art and be financially stable, but alas, we do not live in that perfect world.
I suppose if I really wanted, I could find ways to make art that would actually make me some profit, but I am simply not willing to make that compromise. My art remains the truest extension of who I am, and I’m proud of that.
So these past few months, I’ve been working my ass off in a non-art related gig and making as much income as I possibly can so that I can return to the thing that I love most in this world; making art. And best of all, I will be able to do so with the peace of mind that I’m able to pay the bills. At the end of the day, I don’t think I want to be the kind of artist that is constantly struggling to make ends meet. I would rather do what's necessary to be financially secure, even if it means giving up on my dream of being a full time artist.
With all that in mind, I think it’s also time that I sunset my Patreon. To all my supporters past and present, I want to thank you one final time for your support; it meant so much to me, and still does. And to the little community that has rallied around me and my comic, you’re the ones who keep me going. Not to worry though, I won’t be going anywhere any time soon. If you still really want to support me to contribute to the comic (and trust me, every little bit helps,) my Ko-Fi will still be around. And if you’re a fan of the comic, my characters, and/or slime content and you want to hang out with like-minded people, you are welcome to join us in the Wasteland Discord.
