Then, they buy "hype badges" for each other which is why AI is constantly on the front page of the website.

Remember slimes: there's nothing worse than releasing a piece of art into total silence. Artists LOVE when you give them feedback via comments, likes, favorites, etc.. It might seem like a small gesture, but it means a lot to someone who spent sometimes dozens of hours on one piece of art to have their work acknowledged and appreciated in some way. And the smaller the following, the more meaningful that small gesture means to them.

And artists, if you're lucky enough to have people comment on your work, it's always nice to reciprocate and acknowledge them back. Nobody should ever have to live and work in their own little vacuum. If you want to be acknowledged, you also have to do a little bit of acknowledging others as well.

This is true for my own work too of course, but I hope this helps some of the smaller artists and the up-and-comers in the community in some way. True artists try to lift each other up, as opposed to try and ignore or bury the people around them to make themselves look taller.

Let me preface this by saying that I try very hard to avoid using my platforms to air my grievances. I do my best to focus on the art and spread positivity instead. I hope that I’ve proven that over the few years that I’ve been around. But in this case, I can no longer be passive. I need to do what I can to protect artists and our future.

It makes me absolutely sick that this AI artist who pumps out thousands of AI images in one year is now being celebrated on their massive platform. “Wow, look at how much money they’re making!” Since this AI art account was made about a year ago, they have almost three thousand (!!!) pieces in their gallery. It is abundantly clear that their focus is quantity over quality, and they have nothing new or interesting to share. Meanwhile, I’m over here giving so much of my life to Wastelanders, my own time (and money) and art expertise being invested over two years. You know what would be nice? A shout-out for MY hard work.

I’m quite tired of being punished for trying to do things the right way. Why bother working hard to tell stories with actual human heart and building actual characters? Why not pump thousands of images with nothing new to say onto DeviantArt and sucker people into buying a pretty rendered image instead?

Effective immediately, I’m pulling Wastelanders from DeviantAI. In it’s stead, I’ll be adding BlueSky, Newgrounds, and e621. I’m done with a platform that does everything it can to tell me that the work that I do is worthless.

There's an interesting discourse that emerged around pages 15-16 of Wastelanders both on my Discord and in my comments sections, mainly because it seems that I caught a few of my readers off-guard by Drex's brutality. I thought it would be fun to write a journal about it, so...here we go!

You may have noticed that there is a definite contrast in the way Annie approaches dealing with the people who cross them versus how Drex handles it. Annie seems to have the more compassionate hand overall. She can be rough, sure, but she seems to lack the killing intent that Drex does.

This is intentional, of course. In Chapter 1, Drex remarks about running out of volunteers for his experiments, so he scoops up a random frog to experiment on, and that's okay because the ends justify the means. (That, of course, is the same logic used by his adversary). You should instantly recognize as the reader that experimenting on animals isn't great. This is very much a character that wants to help other people, but doesn't exactly always know the best way to go about it. It's part of his journey towards understanding what it takes to make the world a better place, rather than perpetuating the things that are already wrong with it.

Drex is an imperfect protagonist for an imperfect world. Lucky for him though, there is someone in his orbit who knows a better way and can teach him. And of course, Annie is imperfect, too. The relationship my characters have are symbiotic. Drex lacks empathy, but Annie has that in spades. Annie lacks self-restraint, but Drex can teach Annie how to maintain control of herself and her impulses.

It's all part of the story, my friends.

It’s Annie’s birthday today!! And, it’s the start of my third year as Drex. As always, I come before you with humility and gratitude; thank you for being a fan of my work. This is going to sound super corny (try not to cringe), but all of the art that you see here comes directly from my heart, and it’s the most gratifying thing in the world when I see people respond positively to it. My goal will always be to contribute to the world the slime protagonists that I never got as a kid, and I wanted to give that to as many people as possible. This was the way.

January 1: Releasing Wastelanders: Chapter 1 DX in it's entirety. This is an improved version of chapter 1. It's not a total re-draw but there are tons of notable differences/improvements, and the promised two-page spread format. I recommend it for people who want to catch up on the story, or if you want to refresh your memory before chapter 2 starts. You can read it right here on FurAffinity, DeviantArt, Twitter, and I plan to release it on at least one webcomic hosting platform like Webtoons or GlobalComix.

Also launching January 1st is my Patreon and Ko-Fi pages. These are for people who enjoy the webcomic and want to directly support the creation of future chapters. If you enjoy my content, please consider donating. Every little bit helps.
