I'm over being old
General | Posted 15 years agoTurned 28 yesterday and I don't even give a fuuuuuck!
The harsh realization hit last year when I was anonymously chatting and was asked my age. It dawned on me if I type my real age I'm going to sound old. I never had that concern before. But...I've had a year to adjust and more importantly contextualize ;)
So, it was a long day!
Slept in to 11am. Obligatory tea, cold cereal, and Daily Show.
Lunch at Angeli Caffe - Chef/Owner is host of NPR's Good Eats show and was recommended by the only food critic to win a Pulitzer for his reviews.
Sold some clothes at Buffalo Exchange, found an AWESOME striped cardigan and plaid flannel shirt. Checkout girl saw my ID and asked, "It's your Birthday?!" then the girl behind me was like "What's your name?" And they proceeded to get the ENTIRE store to sing me Happy Birthday. Sheesh! Embarrassing, BUT while doing it the cashier was giving me multiple gift cards. No way!
Got into work and discovered there was a giant, company wide party! Free In 'n Out burgers, wine, beer, cupcakes, etc. I TOTALLY co-opted it as my Birthday celebration ;) Got drank. Co-workers gifted me 2 bottles of Macallan, some sick beers (Allagasssssh), and a to-die-for pumpkin spice bundt cake w/ cream cheese frosting.
Co-workers made me leave halfway through shift (midnight) and we hit downtown Hollywood (NOT my scene, but I was too gone to resist). Various loud clubs ensued full of tramps and douchey beefcakes.
Slept at work till 8am, jetted to the LA satellite Rally to Restore Sanity. It was SO worth the hangover. If you haven't heard it yet, check out Jon's excellent, inspiring speech: https://youtu.be/jXmbzLI3pnk

General | Posted 15 years agoInspired by
kamui's journal about a female Scandinavian acoustic musician, I feel it only appropriate to lend the same awareness to a male counterpart who's similarly deserving of attention ;)
https://youtu.be/cdQh26ovW0Y
EDIT: Apparently he scored the soundtrack to Falkenberg Farewell - a Swedish flick with growing underground acclaim. While trying to find the trailer I encountered people calling it a masterpiece and similar to Gus Van Sant's work. Which shot it quite high in my book!

Isn't Friday the 13th Supposed to be Unlucky?
General | Posted 15 years agoGot off Thur night's shift at 2am & drove to mountains for Persied meteor shower. At times they were happening once per minute! And not just out of the corner of your eye - big, bright ones that gave you pangs of excitement!
Slept in and caught a wonderfully damning episode of The Daily Show: http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-ep.....0-laura-linney
Scott Pilgrim and The Expendables are out!
Lunch at Porto's for amazing, cheap fried Cuban food (croquettes, meat pies, empanadas, etc.) and got a giant fruit tart for co-worker's birthday. Only $14 for THIS: http://www.flickr.com/photos/415645.....00/3817386028/
Stepped in Goodwill, instantly found a great shirt (that's only supposed to happen after 45 min. of scouring)
Researched only restaurant in LA that has Pavlovas (my co-worker's from New Zealand). Chef inexplicably gave me two!
I passed a French Patisserie in which the chef waved me in to meet a cute girl who wanted to intern with him. He invited us to tour his shop and then opened his fridge full of pastries and said "Help yourself!"
Drove to work with all the windows down, cool ocean breeze blowing through, and soaking in the eternally long southern California sunset while singing way louder than I should to Vampire Weekend.
Entered work to discover: A. It was pay day!
B. There was tons of left over pizza, donuts, and bagels
C. They fired the one co-worker I was stuck with who was completely inexperienced and a drain on the room.
E. I had a half hour of work, after which the building cleared out, leaving 7.5 hours of freedom to celebrate my co-worker's birthday with cheese, crackers, nuts, beer, wine, cakes, and the pavlovas!
Roommate just called out of the blue - coming over to join in drinking and merriment
Man...Just ONE of these things would have made my day awesome!

I don't think I'm a fursuit kind of guy
General | Posted 15 years agoBut if I were, I would wear something like this: http://cghub.com/images/view/30596/
Also, need cheap (but in an awesome way) animal mask? This place ( http://www.lynchs.com/cat--Masks-No.....yemasks71.html ) has the kind I wore in this pic ( http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1093881/ ) for like $4.99. I found that one originally in a chain party store, so you could probably find them elsewhere, too.

BURNING MAAAAAAN
General | Posted 15 years agoNever gone before. Crazy excited. Staying at furry camp. But have no furry costume/paraphernalia. Going to be lamest guy around :(
Does ANYONE have any fursuits/partials/costume bits I might be able to borrow/rent/buy?
Apparently the desert is a cruel monster and everything comes back saturated in dust and sweat. So I'm afraid I can't guarantee pristine condition if it needs to be returned.
Lemme know :) Thanks, friends!

The rat race, escapism, and the feasibility of such
General | Posted 15 years agoHave you guys seen:
Into the Wild
The Beach
Swiss Family Robinson
White Squall
Lost
Gerry
A lot Mallick's stuff (Badlands, The New World)
I just watched Cast Away for the first time (I know, I know) and it left the same yearning that those flicks did.
I take a lot of shit for granted. Becoming disenfranchised with amenities the rest of the world would dream of sounds absurd, but I'm not going to lie and say it hasn't happened.
So, how do you fix that? Not by pop-psychology or words of advice. It has to be deeply affecting - a life altering experience. There's the saying "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone."
I've seriously considered selling everything, stocking up on essential gear, and exploring islands in the South Pacific. Learning how to fish, hunt, scavenge, and overall survive in nature. The goal isn't just to survive, but to prosper - to be comfortable in a purely natural environment.
How much would you change from such an experience? What would you learn about the world? Yourself? What would you see, hear, experience? What kind of person would you be if/when you return?
I'm not a Luddite and this isn't pie-in-the-sky fantasies. I've been backpacking and camping all my life and I'm an eagle scout. I have a good taste for what survival in nature entails.
But...right now I'm entranced by the security of a nice job, nice apt, nice possessions, and trapped by several years of debt. What would it take to make an escape possible? Getting fired? Mid-life crises? I'd go now if it weren't for the debt. What'll happen by the time it's paid off? Maybe by then I'll have a significant other, a mortgage on a house, more debt. By then I may go numb and no longer care...
Phewww
Look at me, a real journal. It feels good getting it out and I'm insanely curious if anyone else has felt the same?

Lemmings MULTIPLAYER
General | Posted 15 years agoYou remember that old game? For like DOS?

Well, someone posted in a journal here a link to a free online game that's almost exactly like it, except it's MULTIPLAYER! I discovered it at 3am and literally stayed up for hours laughing at the cute, suicidal mice ^.^
http://www.transformice.com/en/
The server can be a little buggy, but keep trying because it's so darn fun (and cute!)

Help me choose a dog!
General | Posted 15 years agoFor when I eventually move somewhere that allows one! And I WILL, damnit!
So, if I lay out some criteria, it wouldn't be presumptuous to hope for a few suggestions would it?
1st Dream Choice: Border Collie
http://coolrain44.files.wordpress.c.....der_collie.jpg
That FACE! The way they tilt their head! But there's NO way I could exercise and utilize it enough that it wouldn't fuck my shit up :(
2nd Dream Choice: Husky or Malamute
http://www.fhm.wur.nl/NR/rdonlyres/.....58/husky19.jpg
http://www.eurooscar.com/Fotos-de-C.....d_malamute.jpg
Definitely don't have active enough lifestyle to keep it exercised and I worry Southern CA heat would murder it :(
3rd Dream Choice: Some great lumbering oaf!
http://www.thepetextraordinarium.co.....sets/digby.jpg
Big dogs have a good, mellow nature and are fun wrestling buddies, but I worry about health concerns that come with big dogs (and vet bills), shorter life expectancies, and slobber :(
The only things I'd add is...
- Real fur (not the short-haired variants like boxers)
- The bigger, the better (dogs you have to worry about stepping on aren't real dogs ^_-)
- A good nature and healthy breed history are big pros
- I'm not opposed to mutts, I mean, I haven't written off just visiting a shelter and choosing one
Any suggestions I'll totally take seriously. I trust you guys more then other friends for some weird reason ;)

If you haven't been watching Adventure Time, YOU NEED TO
General | Posted 15 years agoAn Introduction to The Avett Brothers
General | Posted 15 years agoInspired alternative bluegrass brother duo churned out a lot albums. Here's my first impressions:
IMPORTANT: The last video is incredible - don't leave before watching it!
2002 - Country Was
Early stuff is too twangy. 1 or 2 good tracks
https://youtu.be/E2nhCva2pdI
2003 - A Carolina Jubilee
Slight improvement over previous album. Louder, more forward sounding. Hollering vocals all seem to reach the same pitch which got on my nerves. Still 3-4 good tracks.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/1.....m%20Locust.mp3
2004 - Mignonette
More acoustic and less twangy, traditional bluegrass sound. Upbeat and with some beautiful stuff in there. Worth checking out in its entirety.
https://youtu.be/9MoCfC68WV8
2006 - Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions
Their "experimental" album? Rawer, edgier sound. Catches you off guard and eminently clear 1 listen through was insufficient. Kind of a Jack Johnson meets Neutral Milk Hotel.
https://youtu.be/A7BieNklO30
2006 - The Gleam
Easy, calmer, and more acoustic. Just as beautiful, but more straightforward and not as whispery Iron and Wine.
https://youtu.be/kVtkOUJhpcA
2007 - Emotionalism
Stunningly produced; warmness just draws you in. Peppier bluegrass-tinged acoustic sound. Probably their best album.
http://newatlantic.files.wordpress......ie-die-die.mp3
2008 - The Second Gleam
Simpler, singer/songwriter sound that's similarly Iron & Wine-tinged like the 1st Gleam.
https://youtu.be/XybDZ9I9k4k
2009 - I and Love and You
Bigger, more modern sound that swells inspirationally, but still balanced by some softer tracks. Impeccable melodies throughout holds everything together.
https://youtu.be/qqZZlL0l5Uk
Have you heard of these guys before? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts...

STATUS UPDATE:
General | Posted 16 years agoWatched "The Fourth Kind" (not especially good, but total spooky moments that don't blend well with my overactive imagination).
Turned on all the lights.
Chomped a vicadin (left over from a legitimate prescription, thank you very much).
Watched Balto.
Everything's ok :)

General | Posted 16 years agoA lot of people aren't aware of it. The beautiful/strange /androgynous singer 'Antony and the Johnsons' has a music video that's ridiculously furry.
Not like a normal video with furry characters, but the exact fantasy-inspired, dubious quality furry art that so populates our fandom. My mind can't stop reeling with how exactly this artist was discovered and video brought to fruition.
http://www.theworldofadam.com/thelake.html
To apologize for the old thing, here's something new! A surprisingly well done animation encapsulating why a lot of folks get into furry. While a little melodramatic, I give it props for its skillful execution, tasteful music, and unabashed-ness. There is a rarely encountered tangible sense of honesty to it...

I don't know why the Klapper Vessla aren't on any English Ikea sites since I found mine in an American retail store.
And, yes, I did try snuggling with it one night, but ended up having tons of nightmares so now I nervously keep it at a distance when I sleep 0_0

YARRG, There be Treasure Island!
General | Posted 16 years agoLast weekend was the 1st & best music festival I've ever been to! I trekked up to San Francisco, forgot my ticket, bought another, spent even more money on a delicious dinner with
tann and
kamui and froze my ass off on this small island listening to some great music!
Let it be known, if you've never seen The Flaming Lips live, it is something you MUST do before you die!
Evidence for your approval:
* Crowd surfing in a giant, inflatable hamster ball: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLEtzjNtBUA&fmt=18#t=0m23s
* Crowd surfing furries: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzptVr0VRjU&fmt=18#t=2m26s
* Dancing chicks in skimpy flying squirrel and yetti outfits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iT394exYjSU&fmt=18#t=1m05s
* Earth destroying gong: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpntQ8bXpeE&fmt=18#t=2m26s
Also, a lesser known, up-and-coming group performed with ridiculous amounts of cuteness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHoNPeamL1k&fmt=18
Because you can't see how unbelievably cute the female compatriot is, here's the same song, albeit much stabler ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qb9jY8yAxgs&fmt=18#t=0m24s
Finally, San Francisco people are unsuspectingly nice. It was my first time figuring out mass transit and I swear to god I made like 6 friends out of random strangers traveling with me. Most everyone seemed friendly and happy to chitchat! What a beautiful, amazing city...

The Furriest Family Guy
General | Posted 16 years agoIf you guys haven't caught it yet, definitely give this season's premier of Family Guy a watch: http://www.hulu.com/watch/98264/fam.....the-multiverse
Not only is it really funny, but innovative, and ridiculously furry :D
I think Hulu takes down new episodes after awhile, so make sure to catch it soon!

1)these are the rules
2)post 8 true things about yourself
3)at the end you must tag 8 people and post their icon
4)then you must go to their page & tell them you got tagged
5)NO tag backs!
(1.) I've been stabbed by a bull-fighter's spear.
(2.) I was a pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean III (WORST of the 3)
(3.) I still get afraid of the dark.
(4.) I just saw Hayao Miyazaki in person this week.
(5.) After visiting Nigeria I got mysterious ring-shaped scabs on my side. Doctor said: "I have never seen anything like this before in my life."
(6.) Speaking of doctors, I was prescribed to have a milkshake every day. Yum!
(7.) 26 year old virgin. (kinda)
(8.) I have never had a spiritual or supernatural experience.
WTF, I have to tag eight people?? No way. Now way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skCV2L0c6K0&fmt=18
