Furnal Equinox 2025 - Handouts from my writing presentations
Posted 7 months agoI had a great time at Furnal Equinox in Toronto this weekend! A big Thank You to everyone who attended my two presentations on writing furry fiction on Saturday. We had a lively back and forth and I hope everyone got something useful from the sessions. It was good to see old friends and meet new ones. A special Thanks to the folks who stayed to chat and share their thoughts after the sessions were over.

Writing Better Fiction at MFF on Nov. 23
Posted 12 years agoUpdate: Handouts from the writing presentation are now available in PDF format.
http://webhome.idirect.com/~twessner/Writing Better Fiction - 2013.pdf
I'll be at Midwest FurFest this year. On Saturday I'll be presenting on "Writing Better Fiction," sharing what I've learned from ten years of publishing the fanzine Fang, Claw & Steel http://webhome.idirect.com/~twessner/fcs/fcs.htm For an example of the editing I've done, try checking out Wookiee's story, "The Bonding Stone." http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14014/
"Writing Better Fiction" is based on the "Rules of Writing Good Fiction" presentations I've done at AnthroCon. The more you know about how stories work, the better your stories can be. Once you know what the "rules" are, you'll be able to go beyond them to surprise and delight your audience with new and unexpected wonders and terrors.
Learn about "The Beautiful Tragedy of the Magician," "When Real Things Happen to Imaginary People" and "The Secret to Writing Good Fiction." Yes, there is a secret, and I will tell you what it is.
The presentation has been trimmed to fit into an hour. But since there're nothing booked for the room afterwards, there'll be plenty of time for supplementary discussion and materials after the official end time.
A lively and informative time is guaranteed for all!

Writing Presentations at Anthrocon 2010
Posted 15 years agoThis year at Anthrocon I'll once again be giving presentations on the rules for writing good fiction. These presentations cover many of the things I've learned from ten years of publishing the fanzine Fang, Claw & Steel http://webhome.idirect.com/~twessner/fcs/fcs.htm.
Last year's writing presentation proved to be very popular. This year I've split it into two sessions with new material added. In addition to favourite subjects such as "The Beautiful Tragedy of the Magician," "When Real Things Happen to Imaginary People" and "The Secret to Writing Good Fiction," new topics include "Genres and the Economy of Narrative," "From Time Lines to Story Line" and "Building on a Foundation of Desire."
Here's the presentation titles, times, locations and summaries from the Anthrocon 2010 schedule guide.
Rules for Writing Fiction
Friday 2:30–4:00 PM Presentation Room
Learn what separates great stories from bad ones. When to apply the rules, when to break the rules and how to go beyond them!
More Rules for Writing Fiction
Saturday 3:30–5:00 PM Cambria
Find out what makes a great story, along with some effective and practical techniques for turning your ideas into compelling stories.
A lively and informative time is guaranteed for all!
Update: Handouts from both writing sessions are now available in PDF format.
