Holy Crap, Wes, where have you been?
Posted 12 years agoOkay, so my life has been like this recently:
I got an amazing new job!
Unfortunately, it's in Palo Alto. See, I live in a little city called Pittsburg, way the hell up in the North Bay of California.
So, this becomes a 6 hour door-to-door commute.
I did this for two months solid. And, while draining, I survived.
They liked me enough to switch me to a new schedule. One that gives me Wednesdays/Thursdays off, and I work from home on Sat/Sun.
Dream Job.
So, I've FINALLY got more time to work on art, and, as you can see, I have been! :D
I managed to draw two panels of SG, and a Doge.
I've been writing more and more recently, because it's easier to write on the train than it is to draw on it. I've finished a novel, and I'll be publishing it very soon. ^_^ Gay vampire erotica. Mom'll be proud.
I've got a lot of hope for practicing on art on some of the characters that I've got on that one journal entry. It's kind of exciting to be able to sit down and work after months of frantically doing art, and then never being able to.
I'm probably going to see about commissions. Just small things, like the aforementioned Doge, so that I can test the waters once more, and see where that may get me. There's a lot of things that I really want, like a new monitor (That will let me be more productive at work!).
I miss art. I miss working and getting better. I hope to be able to do more of both.

So, here's how it's been going.
I took a huge massive break from updating FA. Actually, I took a break from everything. I stopped drawing.
One of the biggest problems I had was that I was comparing myself to everyone out there. So, instead, what I did was I stopped looking at art. I did it for a year. I did everything I could to not visit this site (As the 8,000 submissions in my box tell me) I didn't look at much artwork. I put everything artistic on hold for a year, to get ME back. So that I could feel confident in what I'm doing.
I'm very happy to state that my webcomic (http://sacredgroundscomic.com) is back now. I'm working on it again regularly. I've made three updates since, and I already have a bit of a buffer. I now have
helping me with the inking, because, I hate inking.
I just want to say...to those of you who've stuck with me through this. Thank you.
It's taken me a long, long time to bring myself out of this artistic funk. And, I want to come back with this nice shiny fresh perspective, maybe get some nice shiny new art out of it, and see what we can see.
If anything. Check out the comic, and know that comments keep me going.

Basically, what I need from you is to post your character references!
Few catches though.
1.)Posting here isn't a promise of art.
I'm doing free drawing in my spare (read train) time! Sometimes I sleep, sometimes I like to play Tetris. I'm not doing anything for donations this time around, because this is strictly for me to see your lovely characters, and get betterer at drawing, while I reserve home drawing for my webcomic, Sacred Grounds.
2.)If you don't fill the form out properly, I will tell you, and you will not get free art!
The more informative the form you fill out, the more likely I'll be drawing your character! So, consider it a bit of a writing contest! Show me your best work! I'll show you mine!
I will not be going in order, if I see a post that catches my attention, I will probably draw them first.

teahound and my trade, when I plugged in my Windows Box I got everything set up, and then it's all "Hey, I need a password!" It was my old work machine, so I tried that...but, it doesn't work. ;_;
So, I wrote where I used to work, and am waiting for them to get back to me so that I can use Sai, which I've heard is far superior to Photoshop for doing things the way I do things.
Who knows! But, I'm going to give it a try.

I still need to scan them and upload them...HOWEVER! Those of you who were considering donating, I have NOT done yours yet. I'll give you till tomorrow to make up your mind if you want to toss me a couple of bucks and get a bust shot, or if you want to get a headshot for frees.

Basically, if you want a cleaned up sketch of your character's headshot, that's cool and totally free! All I ask is that you fill this form out and paste it as a comment to this journal!

If we get to $200 total, I'll digitally color the sketches of everyone who donated.
If we get to $350 I'll color EVERYONE'S bust sketches.

Posted 14 years agoOne of the major complaints I hear from folks is that their art 'isn't good enough' and they want to know how they can change this.
People say 'practice'. Yet this answer frustrates young artists, who are trying to work.
I'm 30. Because of how my parents and sibling treated my art, I put my pencil down for a long, long time, amidst cries of "You'll never amount to anything" and "To be a REAL artist you have to be able to sell something over $100!!"
So, I stopped trying. For about ten years. I was 20 again when I finally picked up my pencil.
Now, I'm not the best artist in the world. I would rate myself around...decent. I'm an okay artist, but I want to be an awesome artist. I want to illustrate stories. Then, I'll be happy!
I've been drawing, seriously, for about five years. That's why I'm drawing my webcomic, Sacred Grounds (http://www.sacredgroundscomic.com Go, read it!). That's why I'm picking up my pencil again and getting back to all those free headshots I owe, SO I CAN TAKE MORE.
The free headshots were what really catapulted my ability. I saw the progress BECAUSE I was drawing every day, several sketches, and stretching my ability beyond what I was comfortable with (wolves) and into things I never would have drawn. (Some awesome dragons! Rabbits, Antlers, all kinds of great characters.)
I'll start up with the headshots as soon as my scanner's up and ready.
Until then....seriously, it's all about practicing!

I'm kind of back. I say kind of, because my place is still kind of a mess.
I don't know how many of you know, but I've been working on moving. I've been working on Sacred Grounds as well. I adore my room, but there's still a lot of work that needs to be done on it.
I've been focusing on that instead of my artwork, and, honestly, I've been a little sad about it. I adore creation, worldbuilding, and all of that grand stuff, but I've not been able to work on it due to lack of space. I used to have to move everything OFF my bed to go to sleep! Fortunately, that's no longer the case. I'm not asleep at the moment because I'm waiting for my bedspread to dry in the dryer.
Nothing fancy going on these days. Just work, more work, even more work.

Where I've been.
Posted 15 years agoI've actually been VERY busy recently. Where have I been?
Working, mainly. I've been working on my webcomic (As my most recent submission shows) and trying to finish up a critter for my mom like Trevor.
I've also been at work. I got promoted (Sort of...) and now I do a lot more work at my job, and I also end up spending more time at the actual place of employment.
Ugh, and not sleeping so well.
Anyway, I was thinking of working on sketches for a while in the next few weekends. So, that'll be fun, as I'll be streaming them. I'll post here when I do so. Probably not this weekend, but, eventually.
Anyway, my brain is tired, I need sleep.
