Free book on animal anatomy.
General | Posted 13 years agoHey everyone. I found a great resource of some amazing diagrams of animal anatomy. It's available as an image gallery here:
http://uwdc.library.wisc.edu/collec.....ce/VetAnatImgs
or in pdf form here:

Poke me if you know any other good resources on this stuff, I'd love to know about them.

Don't buy a Wacom Inkling. They're awful.
General | Posted 14 years agoSo, I got one of these. Foolishly, I bought mine from ebay, so my one has some problems outside of design (going to try returning it, since they make it v. unusable and it was advertised as 'as new').
But anyway, it gave me a chance to try out the device itself. And dear god, it's not worth it. It's basically a cute executive's toy for taking notes, not a tool for artists. I found that it frequently misread what I'd drawn, resulting in sloppy, scrawled versions of my sketches coming out in the program, which look noticably worse than the biro drawing that had resulted on the sheet. Sharp points are often lost and read as rounded curves, wiggles and spikes emerge where they shouldn't, etc.
Overall, not worth it unless you want very rough versions of your sketches to be vectorised on the go.

Recent Comic Artwork: Thinking and asking for feedback.
General | Posted 14 years agoWow. .gif images produce incredibly odd, Missingno-esque preview pics.
So, the Homestuck-y thing has been a fun diversion. Not sure how much further I'll take it, but we'll see. What do you guys think of it so far?
I'm thinking of continuing Deus in a single-panel upload format. It gives me more immediate reward of completing a smaller milestone, and gives you guys a more regular upload schedule (haha, like anyone gives a damn). I may start doing it in digital format, too. I like the India Ink, but.. Mmn. I'm not sure. Feedback, anyone?

On Comics.
General | Posted 14 years agoI read a fair whack of webcomics, so I'm well aware that I'm somewhere near the bottom when it comes to narrative talent. Which isn't really putting myself down or pityseeking, it's just a fact. Compared to Lackadaisy, or Templar Arizona, or Dresden Codak, I am at the bottom of a very deep pool of creators.
I just have to keep reminding myself.. Deus, for all it's clumsy, monodimensional crappiness, is a step up from my previous attempts. It's also a piece I write primarily for myself. I love it when people read my work, and go nuts over comments (it's embarressing how much they mean to me X_x), but the core of the work is exorcising my own demons. Entertaining an audience comes second in this one. So maybe, for this piece, I'm allowed to be a shitty storyteller. I dunno.
A friend of mine is selling off hard copies of his work, if anyone's interested. He's among the host of people I look up to in terms of visual technique and style, and go 'holycrap, I wish I could do that'. So worth a look if you're looking for some shiny furry art. http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2742937/

Pokemon/Dogtato Requests!
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm currently open to requests to draw people/their characters as pokemon or Dogtato-esque characters.
If Dogtato, then tell me what fruit/veg you want. If pokemon, then some rough impression of the personality/style/type you want me to aim for. In either case, a link to the character in question would be nice.
If I draw you as a pokemon, it'll probably only be one, as opposed to an evolution set. Just an fyi. ;) So tell me if you'd prefer it to be big 'n' badass, small 'n' cute, or somewhere in between (or a surprise! :D).
1.
as a 'mon (set, because I want to.)

Guh. Sorry?
General | Posted 14 years agoHas it been 2 weeks already?
Feh. Sorry about that, guys. I've just been really depressed for the past couple of weeks or so, while also dealing with moving two new baby rats into my home. They're settling in fine. Their names are Iggy & Baldrick, and they're adorable.
I haven't given up on Deus, anyway.

Thanks guys. ^^

Am I the only one..
General | Posted 14 years agoWho's too scared to put up commission info in case just nobody ever cares? I'm not sure I'm good enough, but then I see people who I don't think are that great getting commissioned, and go "..Huh".
Which isn't me trying to knock anyone. Art is fundamentally subjective, and who likes what is whatever. But we all have a little inner scale that goes "I wish I were that good D:" or "I remember when I used to draw like that. I've improved!". Or maybe I'm just a TERRIBLE PERSON. I dunno, I suspect not.
Anyway. When do you feel like 'Okay, I'm good enough to do commissions now.'? Is it something you judge for yourself, or wait for people to ask you whether you do them, or what? I know it's up to the individual, but I'm curious about people's views/experiences.
Also, because I've gotta ask. What does everyone think of Deus so far?

Mmn, on second thoughts. [avatar warnings]
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm not going to add avatar warnings for nudity on Deus. Full on yiffing, sure. You've been warned~
New Comic: Deus
General | Posted 14 years agoSo, you've probably all guessed that Breach died a death a while back. I don't really want to continue the route I had planned for it, at least for now. But it (like my other halted creative stuff) has helped as part of the process of.. Me learning how to craft a narrative, and how to art in general, I guess. Hey, who said it couldn't be a verb?
Anyway. This new comic has got about.. 1.75 pages done at the moment, and a lot of the plot hacked out already in Compendium. It's going to be pretty grim, and I'll use thumbnail warnings for the more triggering stuff in it. A lot of it has been me trying to work through my depression. So.. It'll deal with a lot of pretty dark material as the plot goes on. But hopefully in a thoughtful manner, rather than pure-gloom. I hope the plot catches a few of your attentions, anyway.
The art style is a radical new direction for me also, so expect to see a lot of entertaining fuckups if nothing else. I've come to see my art as a process, rather than each piece being an end in itself. From each failure, I take a new map-marker for where not to tread next time. For each bit that goes 'okay', I have safe territory to advance into 'good' from. For each bit that goes well, yay, mental pat on the back and something I can rely on later. It's a constantly ongoing learning experience, and each piece is equally valid in that light, because each piece is a step forward.
It's a good mindset to work from, I think.

Books, Books, Books
General | Posted 14 years agoOh, 1960s art-anatomy books.. If I followed you, I'd learn that everyone is white, every man stoic and muscular, every woman feminine and 'voluptuous'. I actually like Burne Hogarth's books a lot better.. At least his women seem to be proportionally muscular.
I've yet to see an anatomy book which doesn't idealise all it's forms, though. Actually learning how to draw people of all sorts of body types, not just white, abled, strictly gendered gymbunnies, is something I'd like to do.

Sketches
General | Posted 14 years agoMmn, so you've probably noticed that the last few uploads have been markedly different to my usual stuff. This is because I'm trying to work on my basics, mainly honing my process, getting a better immediate feel for the anatomy at work, and not getting so bogged down in details that I never finish half my pieces.
So, there we go. Now I'm off to bed, because I'm shattered.

Buhhh
General | Posted 14 years agoI want to draw so many of you, but my drawings take so long at the moment. x_x I tend to do the full:
Stick Figure

Shapes-Figures

Sketchy Features

Line Drawing
thing, and that's before colouring. It takes so long. ;^; Just need more practice to increase my speed, I guess. :< I've got a picture of
toddlergirl about half done, but at the moment my primary piece is one for my partner's birthday.

General | Posted 14 years agoI have a tablet laptop. Finally, a tablet where I can see what I'm doing!
So prepare for trouble. And make it.. Singular.
Gawd I need to relearn how to draw. I'm so out of practice. Here's hoping it's like falling off a bike, or at least that the piles of ebooks on the topic I've been squirrelling away will help somewhat.

Charity Auction, Artists Needed
General | Posted 14 years agoIt's a good cause, so just passing the word around. I'd offer to put something up, but I suspect my art isn't worth shit at the moment. =_=

Once my new tablet comes through, I'm going to be looking into improving my 2D work a lot more, so expect to see more work up here.
