Mass-migration to Weasyl, watch me there as well

Oh no, it's time for another mass-migration to Weasyl, and this one seems serious enough to make a journal entry on this abandoned account.

In short, Dragoneer has hired a shady hacker with a history of rage-destroying sites he has been trusted with. Two, specifically. He also reportedly spied on users on one of those sites. What... the fuck. Seriously, if the guy wasn't his neighbor and co-worker, I don't believe Dragoneer would have let him anywhere near the site's code.
Today I've changed my FA password and turned my ad-blocker back on for FA as a security measure. I'm also removing it from my check-everyday bookmarks. I now consider it a site that could get compromised without warning. Good thing I don't have private info on this site and everything's backed up.
My stuff's also at https://www.weasyl.com/~ferretwilliams
I am not leaving FA(did you know I moved to a different FA username in 2012?). Not yet, at least. First off, I barely use the site, nor any furry sites. No time. So, there wouldn't be much difference. If I do leave the site, I don't expect to delete the account or the gallery(username FerretWilliams). If I leave, it'll be because I don't trust the safety of the site, and that's no reason to remove the comics. I feel like checking back to see how this whole thing develops.

So, want more information about the hullabaloo with this new admin/coder, StarryKitten? There are various sources, including right from the new guy's own comments(in case they get deleted, I did indeed go to the comments directly for verification), but the best roundup of info with sources is right at THIS LINK. Lots of sources. I'm willing to give second chances, but I see multiple chances used up already.

Leaving in a huff? Here's my Weasyl!
Posted 12 years agoSince so many people are migrating to Weasyl right now, I should let you know that you can take me and Kenny with you:
https://www.weasyl.com/~ferretwilliams
And, if you are still on FA, so am I, under a different name:
ferretwilliams
I limited myself to 2 journals & 2 submissions to announce my new username here, but with the big Weasyl migration it seems important to seize this opportunity to let you know about that gallery. I'm still maintaining my gallery on FA and on Weasyl, as I generally don't trust rumors and mob mentality, so you can catch up with me at both accounts. I'm also on Inkbunny under the same new username, but it's on the shortlist for the next site to stop using due to over-abundance of bare cub butts & loaded diapers.
Don't mind the lack of updates at those accounts in the past months, I've had to focus on other things lately. I fully intend to post more often sometime this year.
And remember:
https://www.weasyl.com/~ferretwilliams
Edit: 3 watchers in the past 2 months??? You KNOW this account had been abandoned, right? I mean, there are journals and submissions trying to make that obvious, as well as telling you where I am now.
Also, I suspect FA's current slowness is going to drive even more furs to Weasyl, sorta like a "straw that broke the camel's back" sort of thing. It's an indisputable fact that FA's code is outdated and inefficient. Their only advantage at the moment is the vast userbase. They could potentially lose that advantage.

Still catching up on submission-viewing. Halloween viewed!
Posted 14 years agoI had over 1000 submissions in my list today and I FINALLY got past the Halloween submissions. I've skipped over a lot of submissions to speed things along.
In webcomic reading, I've gotten into the Christmas comics finally, but still have over 200 comic strips to catch up on. I've unsubscribed from a few webcomics to help speed things along.
That month-long break in December was supposed to give me time to catch up with things like this!
I'm not transferring my FA watches over to the new
FerretWilliams account until I'm all caught up, because I'll still have to catch up on this watch list anyway. I could just skip everything, but then I'd miss parts of multi-submission stories.
If you haven't watched my new account(93% of you haven't yet), I'm now posting new comics at
ferretwilliams! I urge you to go there and watch my new account.

FerretWilliams from now on. In fact, ALL my stuff will be posting there from now on, although that is generally just the comics anyway. So please watch that account for continuing ferret, fox, lemming, mouse-eating goodness!
If FA let me simply change my username, I would do that, but them's the breaks. I'm making Ferret Williams be my username on all sites I frequent, and I no longer go by WillYums. Even just yesterday, somebody pronounced it "Willy... um... U.M.S.". My new username is much easier for people to spell and pronounce.

FerretWilliamsWill you please use :iconuser: instead of :usericon:?!
Posted 14 years ago"So I was with [icon] and [some other icon] and we agreed that [another picture you don't recognize] is totally the best artist ever. Oh, and [wtf who]."
Why are people using the code to display a user's icon without their name so much? When I'm reading these journals, I have no idea how to parse these images into the sentence structure. I just read it as "So I was with [blah] and [blah] who said that [who the fuck are you talking about?!]...". Yes, I can mouse over the icon to find out who you're talking about, but I don't read with my mouse. It turns them into incomplete sentences where you have to mouse over parts to read the missing fragments. What's worse, people change their icons, so you might be talking about somebody I know, but I might not recognize their icon.
Seriously, this makes journals and descriptions annoying, slapping an image in place of a name instead of including the name with the icon. Remember... :iconusername: puts an icon AND a name so people will know who
is without interrupting the sentence. In addition, if you don't want an icon at all, :linkusername: will just link the username without the icon. Like this: ferretwilliams

Posted 14 years agoLet's see, what else have I been meaning to mention?
Well, something that hasn't been obvious is that all of the comics from August 25th to November 16th happened on the SAME DAY. Yes, I'm including the dream before Kenny woke up. On the same day that Kenny lost his job, Kenny and Death went to Ook Island and Kenny eventually got a new job after being knocked out by falling dodgeballs. He was unemployed for less than a day. The wonders of cartoon time.
This is one of the things that encouraged me to keep the story moving quickly, having one day spread across 2 and a half months.
In Ferrets Vs Lemmings(premiering January 2nd whether I'm ready or not), Funky Skunk's "ghost"(actually a hallucination when Kenny is stressed or paranoid) will make more appearances. I'll try to make it clear what he is from the start, since the comic is supposed to stand on its own without having read Kenny Chronicles. I figure there will be some comics where Kenny is talking to him without Funky being visible in the comic, too, kinda like this comic, except not visible to the reader at all.
It'll be nice starting out with a fresh archive so I can re-introduce characters and technologies that people have forgotten. One of the problems with a large archive is that people either forget or are never introduced to certain things/characters. I was surprised at how many people commented about the wireless energy on Ook Island, considering it's been mentioned before. I guess batteries are so prevalent that people think that's how the flying shoes are getting their power, when in fact if you fly a few meters away from your ship, you'll fall straight into the ocean. Tarneki Tech added some safeguards in their second generation of flying shoes after losing some of their customer base and you'll notice in Ferrets Vs Lemmings that the first generation flying shoes(like Kenny currently has) will be banned on Ook Island without some wearable wireless power.

Ah, I forgot to post a bonus feature today! Okay...
Posted 14 years agoIf you read through the entirety of my last post, this won't be any new information, but I know a lot of you would have skipped a large portion of it because it was such a long entry. So here it is.
If Death got pregnant in July, and the comic progressed at the same speed as real-life time, they'd be finding out the gender of the baby in December, unless some new technology will be able to tell the gender earlier, like by reading the chromosomes, which is possible. So congratulations, Kenny and Death, it'll be a GIRL! I still haven't started designing her yet, especially because merging a fox(with some feline DNA) with a lemming(with a large amount of baboon DNA) is tricky. Which chromosomes will be dominant? What color is her fur? How big will her ears be? I still have no idea.
I've also made no progress in updating the 3D model. After the ferrets and lemmings move in, they will make several changes. I have a placeholder for the ferret government's tower there, but the shape is all I have. I was hoping to have some in-progress pictures to share with you. I hope I can get some work done on those this weekend, but I DID take December off because I'm just too busy, so we'll see. I don't know what I'll have to share on Monday yet. One of the things I've been filling my time with is simply catching up on things like reading comics. I subscribe to too many comics and have been a few weeks behind for too long. I read some Thanksgiving comics last night. I'm also a couple weeks behind on watching My Little Pony.
Now one more thing: Does anybody have any questions about the comic now that it's ended? Any loose ends? With the comic finished, and the next comic trying to be self-contained without requiring having read Kenny Chronicles, I believe I've wrapped things up nicely, but a cartoonist is often lousy at seeing things from the readers' point of view. I'll try not to give any spoilers to Ferrets Vs Lemmings, but I might answer some questions about that as well.

Swype
Posted 14 years agoI just downloaded Sype for my new Android phone and entered "Hello, my name is Garrett Williams and I'm a brony" and it showed "hello, name is Garrett Williams scissoring" LOL!
(Unlike many people, when I type "LOL", I actually did laugh out loud)
Oh, and I'm still new to Swype. They said you can swipe through multiple words, but so far it's not taking my swipe through the space bar into account. The part before "I'm a brony" was actually entered by lifting my finger after each word because these are the first words I've typed with this new keyboard. I'm certainly not used to it yet.
As for Android in general, eh, I'm still preferring the iPhone, although Android does have more flexibility. For instance, I can change my keyboard! I never had any complaints about the iPhone keyboard, though. In fact I like how the Swype keyboard has the same key shape and almost the same key spacing as the iPhone keyboard. The Android keyboard, like many other elements, just doesn't have style.

Is stop motion obsolete?
Posted 14 years agoI watched the new Muppets movie on Sunday, which was funny although I wasn't entirely satisfied with the plot, and one of the previews shown before the film was for "The Pirates! Band of Misfits". Besides the made-for-TV feel of the title(short title with an extraneous and often redundant phrase added afterward), the thing that bugged me the most was the framerate. This is 2011, and yet this looks like it's 12fps at MOST. Hand-drawn animation has smoother, more natural movement than these pirates, and that's usually 12fps.
I'm sure some people prefer the jerky aesthetic of stop motion, but wouldn't people like claymation better if it moved more naturally? Well, CGI can replicate claymation PERFECTLY now, and at 60fps if they like! It's also easier! CGI has all of the same benefits stop motion has(you can even add the imperfections if you want). In fact, Flushed Away was CGI that mimicked claymation and it did rather well. Which makes me wonder... if I made Ferrets Vs Lemmings 3D cartoons at a stop-motion framerate, would it be as successful as if it was good claymation? This would cut render times by at least half! I might even add fake fingerprints to the "clay". I think I would still go 30fps, though, because the finished product is more important than render time unless it's a recurring series.
Here's the trailer for The Pirates! Band of Misfits...
Keep your eyes peeled for "Ferrets Vs Lemmings: Long Tube Critters Have Disagreements With Short Rodents With Hardly A Tail"

Got STYLE! (warning: My Little Pony)
Posted 14 years agoI'm in the middle of watching the latest My Little Pony episode(Mare Do Well) and after re-watching the 12-minute part several times due to a bad download(tried it in a few players before just re-downloading), I just noticed that the dam has little pink hearts on the structure at the base of it. Little... pink... hearts.
That is adorable, really. We need power dams with little pink hearts on them.
I also just watched May The Best Pet Win(I'm late, I know, I've been busy). I of course already read plenty about Tank. The first half of the episode actually felt like a movie. I think it was the musical number. It just felt that grand. Also, LOL Derpy. What'chu doin' in that chicken coop? I saw it mentioned before, so I was looking for her. That is downright silly.
I look forward to the next episode. Season 2 is showing no signs of loosing steam. And neither is Tank.
....oh, right. I haven't finished this last episode yet. *goes back to it, now that it's re-downloaded... oh but first...* I've been suspecting the mare is Twilight, but on the part my file stopped on, she has WINGS, TOO! That seems impossible due to the only ponies... oh, right, it's obviously Luna, then. It IS her build. *goes back to the episode*
update SPOILERS BELOW:
*finishes episode*
Well I DID think it seemed out of character for Luna, but she's the only pony with a horn AND wings AND her build. Of course we never see both in the same place at the same time, so of course it's possible they're not the same Mare... wait, that somehow sounds backwards(*re-watches Superman the original series*).
Anyway, it was clear that the Mane 6 were up to something, but I was sure that they had dragged Luna into it. If you want to show Rainbow Dash up in order to teach her a lesson, you have to bring in a goddess. I didn't expect the multipleBatmans Mare Do Wells until they started having Pinkie's and Twilight's teleportation powers(yes, Pinkie has them, they're part of her cartoon powers that none of the others seem to have except maybe Spike).

Deleted scene/plot from Kenny Chronicles
Posted 14 years agoKenny was planned to die.
I figured if Kenny Chronicles is going to end, it makes sense for Kenny to end as well. I had been slightly concerned about that for a long time, though, because killing the main character isn’t always a good idea. However, it was at the end of the series, and his death would cement Death’s and Guy’s alliance in a way that couldn’t change because death is final. If one had an argument, the other could say, “Kenny would want it this way”, whether he would have or not. Also, both Kenny and Death grew up without ever knowing their fathers, and the child would have the same type of childhood.
However, in February of this year, my mom asked me why I was planning on killing Kenny at the end of the series(yeah, she’s known for a while), and I realized that my reasons were now obsolete. The main reason was that I wasn’t happy with his design, so Death and Guy were to replace him. He looked too much like Tails from Sonic The Hedgehog and people mistook him for a cat. However, Kenny’s design had improved considerably over time and continues to improve. I believe Kenny’s design is still more iconic than Death’s and Guy’s design. In fact, Guy keeps changing. Sometimes his stripe disappears between his eyes and he occasionally has cheek tufts. I need more practice drawing realistic ferret heads, and I’m certainly going to be drawing a variety of them over the next few years.
Kenny’s effect on peace between the two governments can still exist if he lives. In fact, their peace might hinge on his existence as a mutual friend and being a duke of both governments at the same time.
After I realized that Kenny had less reason to die, I decided to make up a list of benefits to both ideas(like the list I made when deciding if Funky Skunk should die), starting with benefits why he should live. I only got as far as “Fans won’t be mad”. I saw no reason to go any further.
Being February, I had plenty of time to modify the plot and any foreshadowing. I only had one tiny piece of foreshadowing of his death posted in the comic, and it was inconsequential. You see, his cause of death wasn’t going to be the dodgeballs. Sure, he was going to still get dodgeballs dropped on him, but the twist was going to be that his actual cause of death was going to be a heart attack. The falling balls were going to startle him to death. To facilitate this, Kenny was to have a heart condition which he kept secret. Basically, his heart was to be beating at the speed of a fennec fox’s heart(118 bpm resting, as if fennec foxes ever rest) because he’s part fennec. A human’s heart rests at 60bpm, not to exceed 100. Tarnekis basically have the body of a human, so this would be dangerous. One of the symptoms of a fast heart rate is shortness of breath after running. Of course, this is a common symptom of RUNNING, so when I had him be way too tired in this strip from April of last year, it could also just be regular fatigue. Yep, that was the foreshadowing to Kenny dying of a heart attack. Fatigue. So I felt I could dismiss that and go ahead without his heart condition. The other foreshadowing I had planned would have been Kenny taking a pill at lunch and making several funny faces from the taste, but that’s a throw-away gag. I think I did have Kenny tell somebody that his doctor told him to eat less raw meat, but I can’t find that at the moment(it may have just been in a first draft). That’s something else that didn’t require me to stick to the heart attack plan, since his doctor would tell him that anyway. (update: HERE it is!)
And that’s the bonus feature for this week. Most likely the next bonus feature will be next Monday, but if I create enough, I might post something before then.

Not sure about the "Ferret Williams" name
Posted 14 years agoI've been trying out the "ferretwilliams" username on several sites for the past 4 months, and so far I've only been addressed once, and the name I was addressed by was "Williams". No. The purpose was not to have people call me by my last name, it was meant to incorporate my first name in an easy-to-spell way, plus to stop people from calling me "Will". If the username makes people address me by my last name(not even a "Mister" beforehand), I don't consider it an effective username. It just feels so... formal. Plus it's a pretty common last name.
I do like the name, though, because FERRET. Not only is it a good name, but it also has something to do with my comic. It's just the results of using the name that make me unsure about it.
Right now, I'm considering going instead with the name of a project I'll be revealing on Wednesday. It's a catchy, unique name and I own the domain name(no, it's not icwutudidthardotcom, which is a side project). Only issues with this currently-secret name is that people will be calling me by a phrase instead of my name, and the project is only planned to go for 4 years. It's likely people would call me just by the first word in that username(like how people shorten movie titles), which I would totally be fine with. Hmm... now I wish I had named the project something that starts with "Awesome", which would be even better!
I feel like maybe I should just go with garrettwilliams, but not only will it constantly get mis-spelled by people("garret"), the name is also taken on Twitter. Yeah, I need something I can use across several websites.
And no, I can't use "kennychronicles". I already have people calling me "Kenny", which is okay, but it's not my name nor fursona.

Look at your dragon, now back at me. (My Little Pony)
Posted 14 years agoHello, Rarity. Look at your gems. Now back to me. Now back at your gems NOW BACK TO ME! Sadly, your gems aren't in my belly, but if they were, I'd be a very happy dragon.
Look down. Back up. Where are you? You're on a boat, with the dragon you could be feeding. What's in your hooves? Back at me. I have it! It's two topaz crystals about to make a little dragon happy. Look again- THOSE TOPAZES ARE NOW DIGESTING! Anything is possible when your dragon is me.
I'm on a pony.
"GET OFF ME, SPIKE!"
Ponyville
Posted 14 years agoI just searched for "Ponyville" on Google Maps... and didn't find one. I am disappoint. There are so many crazy town names("Batman, Turkey", anybody?) that I was sure I'd find one. For good measure, I also searched for Appleoosa, Canterlot, Manehattan, and the other places on the MLP wiki, but got the expected "not found". Google went straight to Manhattan, even. But Ponyville, that actually seems possible! I did find Cloudsdale Ave though.
If it existed somewhere, I was hoping to use it in the comic at some point. That would simply be funny and cool if it was a real town name.

Wha---- JOURNALS NOW SAY WHO POSTED THEM!!!#!@#@!!1
Posted 14 years agoThis has been a long-standing issue I've had with the site design. The only place it showed who posted the journal you're seeing is in the title bar, and in modern browsers the title is given 2 inches of space(I measured) so you have to hover over the tab to see who posted it. The only other indication was the avatar, which often features something you don't relate to the person like a screenshot from their favorite non-furry show that they don't talk about or something. And Heaven forbid that they change their icon.
This is why I put my name and username in the header of my journals. Of course, my avatar is always of Kenny, and you all read my comic so you know it's from me, but I felt my name still needed to be shown nonetheless.
Of course there's often bad news that comes with good news, and that news is that "apple" has been removed from the species list.

Hundreds of unread journals
Posted 14 years agoFinally decided to nuke all the unread journals on my list. I'd say how many I had, but it was only after I nuked them that I considered making note of the number. 200, 600, I can't remember. Pretty sure it was 600 something. I did read the possibly-interesting journals as far back as a month. Dang, FA really needs auto-deleting streaming notifications.
I seriously have no time for FA, and I hate that that's the case. I also have 906 un-viewed submissions from as far back as 64 days. I'm having to skip a lot of submissions any time I get a moment to view them. Every holiday is a reminder that I need to get through them or else I'll be seeing today's pictures 2 months from now. Halloween on Christmas?
I'll probably get through them on Thanksgiving. No time before then.
In other news, FA's new species list has been applied and now I actually have to scroll to get to... well, not fox anymore. Canid - Vulpine. Well, I guess Kenny's not exactly a fully fox anyway, considering his grandpa(whom he doesn't know about because it's his father's side) was a cat, and there's a possibility there are other species in his heritage. So a more generic "vulpine" is probably more accurate. Eesh, what would Kenny and Death's child be? I really need to get that child designed. Huge ears + barely ears = ...maybe monkey ears, with Death's heritage. That might look too weird. Small fox ears, most likely. Cute is good.
In the next few centuries, the division of species in Tarnation will be increasingly blurred.

Species list getting revised soon
Posted 14 years agoThis is a list of changes to the species list, coming sometime soon. If it's not listed but is currently on the species list, it's not being deleted, this list is just what's being changed:
http://pastebin.com/rgrbtwzR
I couldn't help noticing that lemmings still aren't listed. However, there are only 355 at last search and a disproportionate amount are probably from me. I considered suggesting lemming, but any comic with Death will likely also have another species that's on the list, and I can only choose one species anyway. I don't think it's really important to add lemming to the species list.
Also, "gerbil" and "hamster" are moved to "Rodent - Other". Hmm, might make some mad there. They misspelled "gerbil" as "gerbal" on this list, but it's irrelevant since it's a deleted listing. The most perplexing change is "canid - fox" being changed to "canid - vulpine". Most furries will know what a vulpine is, but most people in general won't.
And as for today's comic, with 3 species in it(2 more highly-searched than lemming, surely)... yeah, it'll be up in a couple hours. I was up for 24 hours yesterday & the linework was looking horrible, so I decided to sleep before I ink. I look forward to this storyline being finished.

Comics will be Mon-Wed-Fri next few weeks
Posted 14 years agoI just now verified it; I simply can’t finish this storyline this year if I stay at a twice-a-week schedule, so I’m biting the bullet and going three-a-week. I’m tempted to make it more, but this will be stressful enough.
And now, a quick guide for leaving a review on Amazon.com:
Posted 14 years ago1. Tell how well it did or didn't work, including any factors that would affect it. If it's computer hardware, what operating system(Windows 7, Macintosh Liger, Ice Cream Sandwich)?
2. Don't review the shipping time. The review is solely for the product itself.
3. If you got the wrong product, no matter whose fault it is(probably yours), don't rate the product. A low rating affects the product's overall rating, and this is not the droid you're looking to review.
4. Don't review the shipping time. If it took a long time to get there, it's not the product's fault.
5. If you leave off a star, why did you leave off a star in the rating? We're curious, because that's a rather glowing review.
6. DON'T REVIEW THE SHIPPING TIME!
