Why is fchan so evil? D:
Posted 18 years agoAlright, the big question now is: Why do something that inherently violates artist's rights as laid down by the spirit of the law?
Personally i must say that i agree actually, could save a lot of time and hassle for me and some others by shutting it down, especially as there are replacements around. However these replacements are the big problem.
Fchan is the one big player in the block and the others are largely insignificant compared with the usage fchan gets. If fchan shuts down though, people would invariably migrate to these. The big difference between fchan and those candidates is now, that fchan tries and gives artists as much control as realistically possible, while they completely disregard artists and seem to be successful with it, or even worse, pretend to give artists control, while not giving them ANY control at all.
If and when such a migration happens, furry artists would lose any control and be forced to actually sue (with real money) sites that are ready to fight back and have done so in the past rather successfully. Thus a closing of fchan, or even admin/moderator actions that trigger such migrations, are a bigger threat to the community of furry artists than the continued existence of it. If i were to do any of these things, i would hurt ALL furry artists, instead of only a select few who have been careless.
And in case some think this is merely my way of excusing myself. It is very much not so. It is the basis on which i am allowed to continue doing what i do. Which is working for the artists (keeping the DNP list upright and respected, crit board, artist board, artist banners). There is a rather powerful force (both financially and influentially) that is keeping watch and standing at the ready to destroy fchan as well as me if i were ever to stray from that course.
It took me a long talk with said power to bring this into a form that can be publicised, since i need to protect their identity and more importantly: Publicising this in a wrong manner would in itself be a danger as well.
I simply hope that this can bring a bit more understanding for the situation that i and fchan are in and for the way things are done.

A unique offer from Fchan

The text below was also sent as an email to a variety of other artists and so far only a few have answered. Before bringing the whole thing online i'd like to at least have a BIT of variety. ;)
So, if you know someone who'd be intereste, please point them at me. :)

Good morning my dear artists. :)
Some of you might know me, my name is Christian Walde, but on the internet most people know me as Xenofur.
For those of you who do not know me, I am currently the admin of the furry imageboard "fchan.hentaiplanet.net". In case you are unfamiliar with image boards, there is a quite informative article on wikipedia: "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imageboard". In short, the website i am administrating revolves around the postign and sharing of artwork that is created by you and people like you. The server acts as a base for a forum-like system and as a temporary repository of the images that are being posted.
Now, since the life of the website in itself is based on your efforts i have been constantly thinking about a way to give you something back. I have now found something that i could do which could benefit you and i am offering it for free. You have been chosen by pure randomness and circumstance to be the first ones to be offered the following:
The main asset that fchan has is traffic, and lots of it. So I am planning to include a rotating banner next to our current banned which can display banners that link to your websites. I expect no recompensation at all, as i view this as recompensation to YOU.
Now that i have gotten a few banners the whole thing is life on fchan. :)
The guidelines for banners are:
- The banner you want to use must be within the dimensions of 300*100. - It may be smaller, but not bigger.
- The content of the banner may be risque, but it should generally stay work-safe.
- The site that is being linked to must mainly contain your own art.
- The artist may choose on which boards the banner is rotated.
- A site that is linked to that mainly contains /ah/-style content may only be linked to on /ah/.
For those who are unfamiliar with this terminology, the contents that are considered /alternative-hard/ are listed on our frontpage in the list of board descriptions.
Lastly the link and banner must be approved by the whole moderation team as well, as a sort of sanity-check and also as a quality-check. This is mainly necessary because i want to prevent this system from being spammed with banners from artists who still have years of training ahead of them and to preserve it's purpose of being a reward to those artists who have done real contributions to the fandom.
Now, if you are interested, all i need from you is a banner image and a link. :)
If this whole experiment is well-received by artists and users alike i will add a similar text like this mail to the rules page and open this offer up for any artist who requests it.
