Posted 16 years agoWell, I had my first good bike wreck today since I started riding again. It was raining and I hit some black ice, my bike went off from under me and I hit the pavement at about 20mph. I"m alright for the most part, and my bike is alright. But I got a little road rash and sprained my wrist. That sucks because I can't ride my bike, and I'm down to one hand for a while. I can use it a little, but it hurts to type, let alone do anything requiring any strength.
This is a crappy time for me to have this happen too. Not that there's a good time, but I was trying to get some work lined up, and this is going to kick my ass there because I can't get around (bike), or do much of anything useful without my hand. Every day counts, and losing time like this is going to hurt us a lot more than my sprained wrist hurts me.

I give up, because that's the only way I'm going to win.
Posted 16 years agoI've been trying to get some work going for almost a year now. Since I last did contract work. I've been trying to find a way to get another 9 to 5 job and bring in money for so long I haven't done anything else, including anything for me outside biking around, and that's mostly to find work.
So I give up.
It's obvious to me that the 9 to 5 world won't have me, so there's no longer a need for me to go so far out of my way to try and find a job in it. Trying to get and keep a good 9 to 5 job has sucked years of my life away, and in the end, it's left me with nothing but a trail of debts and people that believe I'm worthless. I'm a talented, driven person that's been wasting himself on trying to shove a square peg into a round hole.
I know what I can do, and I know what I'm worth. I know I'm capable of achieving far better than what I've got right now. I'm too old to be in the shape I'm in financially. I've got debts to pay, and a life to live, and that's not going to happen if I spend all my time trying to get a job at every pizza shop and grocery store I ride past. I have too much experience to get a low end job, and not enough to get anything better.
It's obvious I need to do this on my own. And I know that I can.
But I've been spending so long trying to do it the "right way" finding a job, saving money, etc. I obsessed over it, I've spent years on and off fearing homelessness, feeling helpless because no matter how hard I tried, I got nowhere and no one could see me for anything but a failure. You can't turn a screw with a hammer. I am a hammer, so screw it.
As of today, I am putting my time and effort into that which I do best, photography, driving, things at which I excel above others. I have to use the gifts I've been given, rather than trying to make my way by following and trying to suck up to anyone and everyone for the next $7.50 an hour.
I know this is going to be hard, probably the hardest thing I've ever done. But I can't stand letting any more time go by while I watch my life slowly get shorter and have nothing else to show for it but age.
That's not to say I'm going to be stupid and not take it if one of the myriad of companies I've applied with calls me with work. But I'm done wasting my time trying to beg and plead for it. I've cowed down long enough, it's time to use my claws for me.
I've been taking this seriously for 2 days, and already have a wedding to shoot. I KNOW I can do this, and once more work starts coming my way, things will start rolling. It's not going to be like a faerie tale, but it's going to be what I need it to be. I don't mind busting my ass trying to get work, if I can actually GET WORK.
My boyfriend is with me on this, and has been putting his feelers out for leads as well, that's a huge help. All I need is half a chance, and I will succeed.
The monster wakes.

Something stolen from armandnousagi
Posted 16 years agoBecause I said I would post it.
the "How well do you know me" meme that was on
armandnousagi 's page.
Who are you?
. Are we friends?
. When and how did we meet?
. Would you kiss me?
. Give me a nickname and explain why?
. Describe me in one word!
. What was your first impression of me?
. Do you still think the same?
. What reminds you of me?
. If you could give me anything what would it be?
. How well do you know me?
. Are you going to put this on your journal and see what I say about you?
. Would you ever meet up with me?

Windows / Mac / Linux. And some thoughts.
Posted 16 years agoWell, for the last few months, I've been using Linux for the vast majority of my computing needs. But I still keep windows on a small drive just for the handfull of games I've got that don't play well under Wine. This is the first time I've really seen them both running on the same machine as I honestly hate dual booting a computer, but it's given me a real first hand look at the difference between Windows and Linux as far as how they perform on the same computer. And it has confirmed with stark realisem the huge difference in resources needed between, and performance given by the two.
I routinely use Linux for gaming, video editing, photo editing, chatting, web browsing, email, often all at the same time, and it barely phases my computer. (even when I'm playing FEAR, or Spore under Wine). But I flip over to the Windoes install, and suddenly it feels like my computer is 20 years old. I'm watching the text lag behind my typing as I write this right now. (Killing time waiting for a game to update.)
Seeing the two different OS's on the same computer, is a real eye opener. I can remember when Windows used to be the small foot print OS that did most everything. Now it's totally the other way around. When a full install of Vista can be upward of 10 gigs, and a full install of Ubuntu is only around 4.
It's taken a while for this to happen, but I think that I'm fineally for the most part over Windows. I don't use it for much of anything anymore. And Linux has been a very solid performer for me over these last few months. Even the little bit of gaming I do on Windows now is barely enough to make me want to boot that OS just because of how poorly it performs. Given, I don't have the newest system out there, but I have a decent one. Even on a fresh install it seems like Windows just takes forever to do things now that I'm used to how fast and agile linux is.
I've used Mac on and off through the last like 8 years too, and like that OS a lot as well. but when you figure the cost into it, Linux obviously is free, and I can get a PC laptop or desktop at half the cost of a Mac, with similar specs, and run it on that. I'm getting so I care less and less about the couple games that I can't run in Linux, and more just want to stay in Linux and use that. I think unlelss Windows 7 is something spectacular, my time running that OS is very quickly coming to an end.

Just to clear some things up. (Phone issues)
Posted 16 years agoI've been having trouble with the IM's on my phone, and since I spend a lot of time on that being out on my bike most of the day, if you're trying to get a hold of me via IM's, just shoot me a text message on my phone instead. This issue has been causing both Xan and I to miss messages for months, so if you're one of those folks that's messaged me and I didn't respond, I'm sorry, but I often don't get the messages for several hours after they're actually sent. T-Mobile is working on it, but till it's resolved, if I'm on via my phone you're better off to text message me. If you have my number use it, if you want it, eamil xoagray(at)gmail.com and I'll send it to ya'.
Just mentioning this because I've had a number of people tell me that they've messaged me and I either haven't received the messages, or received them hours later. This issue has been happening since about January.
Anyway, for now if you see me on my phone IM's, and want to toss me a message, just fire off an SMS, that still works fine on my phone.

*hands you a seat post for a Mongoose* Worth more than gold
Posted 16 years ago Well shit. Who'd have thought that this would be such a hard thing to find eh? They sell mongoose bikes just about everywhere, but finding parts for them is a BITCH! Get this... I called up the nearest bike shop, and told them what I've got, and that I needed a seat post because mine was stolen. They said I had to bring the bike in to measure what size post I had. ( I never realized that these things have so many different sizes!) Also keep in mind, that I have no car, so I had to walk this thing all the way down there. So I walk my seatless bike all the way down to the shop thinking "At least I'll be able to ride it home". Nope.
I get there, and the dude behind the counter comes out with a micrometer, (it seems like every manufacturer makes several different sizes, and they're all within a centimeter of each other,) measures my seat post hole, then disappears into the back of the store for a few minutes. I entertain myself for a little bit looking over the TREK bikes there, I've still got a hard on for a 69er... The guy comes back out with a seat post or two, tries them, then disappears again. Then comes back out and tells me that because it's a non standard size, they don't carry it, and that he's going to have to order one.
I've already been without a bike for a few days and I had that nice long walk back to look forward to, so you can imagine how thrilled I was to hear this. But I told him to put it on order. So now I'm out a set of wheels till Monday or Tuesday. This is killing me because I really do ride my bike every single day, and it hinders my ability to get around and do things, like the all important job searching, and my other side project that I'm thinking of getting started to get some money coming in. Not good timing on any of this.
Of note, there aren't any Mongoose dealers around here, only Wal-Mart, and you can't get any parts for the bikes there, just new bikes. So thanks a lot Wal-Mart for selling something that you won't stand behind at all. Great idea there. Next bike I get is definitely going to be a TREK. It's going to take me a long time to save up for it, but if it means that I don't have to replace half the bike after I get it, and I can get parts for it when I need them, it'll definitely be worth it. I would never have considered spending the kind of money I'd have to lay down for a TREK on a bike before, but now that I'm into it again, I'm realizing that for something I'm going to be putting a couple hundred miles a week on, and riding every day, it's not that much to spend on something dependable and reliable.

Well, this made my day.
Posted 16 years agoWell, this made my day, I park my bike at the local Publix to get some dinner, and someone steals the seat right off it. So here's the fun thing, I bike around. So someone stole the seat off my only means of transportation.
Nice.
So now I have to go spend more money I don't have on a new seat, seat post, and tail light. I already had to spend money I don't have on our phone bill, and now I have to get a new seat and stuff for my bike. Lovely....

Fineally an upswing!
Posted 16 years agoI won't go into all the details, but things are finally taking a little bit of an upswing for us. So you might just see a little more of me some time in the not too distant future. I know it's been ages since I posted a journal on here. But I don't get a lot of time to do much of anything really other than nose to the grind stone looking for any chance to make money.
Hopefully this will lead to me having a little more time to actually do stuff on here, and be more social in general, as well as you seeing more photography from me. I've been wanting to get more into that anyway, it's just been a matter of time and resources.
One thing though, i'm about 1600 behind on my cue of submissions that others have posted, so I probably won't have the chance to see everything that people have put up since about December / early january.
Oh well, at least that I like doing. *laughs* Take care all.

Help out the Snow Leopard, and it won't cost you a dime.
Posted 16 years agoI know in this day and age everyone's a little hard up for money, but here's something pretty cool that I saw in Blotch's journal, that we can all get behind for free!
Take a look at this post if you haven't already seen it.
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/652963/
Just by subscribing to the news letter posted by the Snow Leopard Trust, you can get two dollars donated to their fund! That might not sound like a lot, but with as many furs are on here that are into animals, (and honestly, would we be here if we didn't like animals?) there should be enough of us to make this a pretty big deal! Beauty eh?!
So go read Blotch's post, and see if it's something you're interested in. :) If there's one thing that these times should have shown us all, it's that every little bit helps.

So why no photos from the fox lately?
Posted 17 years agoYeah, it's been a while since I've submitted any new photos. Or really done all that much of anything creative to be honest. But there's a good reason for that. As some of you know, my boyfriend and I have been through a lot. Well, it's far from over. We're still trying to stave off being out of a home, as well as doing everything we can, to get some work going. But it's taking literally every bit of my time. I don't rest, I don't stop. I spend all my time trying to find something, anything, anywhere to do to help bring some money in.
But I haven't forgotten about this place, or the friends that I have here. I just don't have the time right now to be creative, and to read everyone's journals, and submissions, as much as I'd love to. I'm probably going to be pretty scarce until things start to improve. You'll see me now and again, and if I get the chance to do a little shooting, I'll be sure to post it up here.
Hope to be back on the good side of things soon.

Update, we now have a destination!
Posted 17 years agoLast night, things seemed like they were going to be pretty bleak for us, but fortunately that has changed. A friend of ours in Virginia has been kind enough to welcome us into his home, and we've had some friends help pitch in to get us there!
We'll be leaving here on the 30th (today), probably be on our way by the time anyone reads this post. My only real regret is that I won't have the time to say goodbye in person to most of my friends down here in FL, but the way things worked out, we just won't have the time. For those of you who are on here, I'm going to miss you, hopefully we can stay in touch, and some day I'll be back to visit.
I can't express how relieved I am at this. I was readying for the worst, and honestly expecting to have to leave here, on foot. this is a huge weight off both of us. And I'm really looking forward to seeing Virginia again. It's a beautiful place, I'd imagine it's going to do wonders for my photography. And I'll get to shoot SNOWY scenes again! I've so missed the winter.
Anyway, it's going to be a long day, and I'm already up way way too late. Take care everyone, next time I post, it'll be from Virginia. :)

Farewell for now.
Posted 17 years agoI just wanted to write and say farewell for now. Starting on the 30th of the month, we're going to be leaving here on foot, and heading north. I don't know where we're going to be headed, we don't have anywhere to go to, we just can't stay here. The land lord of the friends that we were staying with said we have to be out by the 1st.
I've been looking, but so far haven't found anywhere for us to go to, and I don't want them to get in trouble with their land lord. I'll be taking my clothes, my camera, and my laptop. Hopefully, my boyfriend and I will be able to find somewhere we can get a better start, or at least some help.
It's been fun being part of the community here, I'm going to miss you guys while I'm gone. I don't know when I'll be able to get back, but I'll try to post some photos, or a journal once in a while so long as I've got power to do it with.
take care everyone, and thanks for the friendships and fun I've had here.

Goodbye George.
Posted 17 years agohttp://www.iht.com/articles/2008/06.....s/24carlin.php
Tonight, a man who's been a big influence on me passed on, George Carlin was not only a very funny man, but one of the people who inspired me to get into comedy way back when. I wish I could have told him how much his work influenced me.
As a fan, and a fellow NY'er , I'll mss ya' George. I still hope some day, I'll be as good as you.
