[Announcement] User finder and new Facebook group
General | Posted 14 years agoHope everyone's enjoying what passes for spring around here! Two tiny pieces of news...
First,
michiganfurs has a new user finder arranged by location. The UP is looking a little sad (I'm happy that Chippewa County is winning, but it shouldn't be), so please go there and add yourself!
Second, as many of you are aware, Facebook's old groups are going into archive mode eventually, so I've made a new UPFurry group that's already 25 members strong. It's a secret group, which means non-members can't see it even if they get the URL somehow. This is to protect those of you who are not "openly furry" on Facebook. Unfortunately this also means you need to be friends with an existing group member to be added. If you're not a member and you'd like to join, leave a comment on this journal and we'll figure something out.
Oh, and Anthrocon starts a month from yesterday. See you there?

[Convention] Furry Connection North!
General | Posted 14 years agoMichigan's own fur con, Furry Connection North, is being held on April 8-10 at the Sheraton Hotel Detroit-Novi. Last year's attendance was 880, making the 9th biggest convention in the world! The theme this year is Ages of Japan.
So who can we expect to see there?
In other news, Nakamacon in Wisconsin has been canceled this year, so you can ignore that last journal.

[Announcement] NakamaCon - Call to Artists
General | Posted 15 years agoDon't forget about the upcoming meet this Saturday in Marquette!
But first,
moiracoon asked me to pass this on. NakamaCon is Wisconsin's furry/steampunk/anime convention that takes place in May.
Hi! I'm the coordinatrix for the Artist Alley at NakamaCon 2 in Madison, Wisconsin on Memorial Day weekend (http://www.nakamacon.com). Now that the holidays have passed, I need to gear up and find artists to fill that alley!
Since we’re a young convention, we’re trying some new and exciting things in various departments of the con, but most notably in our Artist Alley.
THE SCOOP
$25.00* - Artist Package - Guarantees you a three foot space at a table, and not only that, but your membership is also included in this package! Break times are very flexible, and we take zero of your hard earned money past the initial $25.00* fee. NO lotteries. NO waiting to see if you get a table each day. It's yours throughout the convention!
Of course there would be some that would ask why pay the $25.00*if I'm not going to be at the convention all the time or in artist alley for more then a few hours at a time? NakamaCon will have a few of tables set aside in a "free-for-all" fashion for those who only want to do art for short periods of time. However, as an artist you would be missing out on a great deal by not going the $25.00*approach.
Eventbrite registration information will be given to you once you e-mail your inquiries to artists[at]nakamacon.com . Thank you for your interest.
Artists will be allocated a (3x3) space on a (3x6) table. You will be sharing a table with a fellow artist. Each artist will have the space for the duration of the convention and will not have to give up said area if they need to go to panels or for any other reason for vacancy. We do ask that if you are gone longer than 15 minutes you do let patrons know by using a sign that will let them know when you are to return.
Adult material must be bound in a non-see through folder, and your name plate must show that you have adult material (nameplates will be provided). The transaction between you the artist and the buyer is between the artist and buyer only. NakamaCon will not become involved in any disputes over payments or property rights. However, we will be glad to hand out forms to the artist upon arrival that will help with orders and commissions. If you have your own materials we suggest using what you are comfortable with.
Finally, your name and a link to your website will be listed on our website and other promotion as artists who will be in the artist alley.
Interested? Know of an artist who might be interested? Please feel free to pass this info on. Though the con isn't until May, spots are filling up!

Slowing down
General | Posted 15 years agoIt's a great time to be a fur up here! After an entire year of only two furmeets, we've had 3 meets in the past 3 months...and that's not even counting the Houghton movie/dinner in October or the Soo lunch last weekend. Now it's time to rest up. Enjoy MFF if you're going.
If you didn't know, the results of the furmeet survey have been up on UPFurry for a few weeks. Interesting to note that 9 out of the 13 who responded would like a meetup at least every other month. Some of the folks in Marquette are already talking about making this a reality. Stay tuned, I always post meet announcements in journals.
The next "big" event will probably take place in Houghton in February, as per tradition. Of course, if you want to do something sooner, don't hesitate to start talking on one of the forums. Until then, have a great winter!

A quick survey for better furmeets!
General | Posted 15 years agoThis expands on the idea of an earlier journal, I guess.
Furry activity in the area has been picking up lately, but we still have communication issues when it comes to furmeets. I've made a short survey in order to determine:
• where and how often furmeets could work,
• what events might be popular,
• how best to make announcements,
• and whether to coordinate our meet schedule with another region's schedule.
The survey is 9 questions (mostly multiple choice) and takes about 5 minutes to fill out. Link is here:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CMC8FDS
This is a personal project, so all your information is confidential. You don't even have to leave your name if you don't want.

Zoo + mini-golf + fursuits = St. Ignace, 9/25
General | Posted 15 years ago*** All official discussion should take place at MiFur if you have an account! ***Finally, a meet for the east siders!
WHAT:
It's a picnic style lunch in Engadine,
followed by a visit to GarLyn Zoo in Naubinway,
followed by mini golf at the Mystery Spot in St. Ignace.
WHEN AND WHERE:
The meet will be on Saturday, September 25. To start, we'll meet for a 12:30 lunch at Engadine's Millpond Park. That's on the west side of M-117 and behind Garfield Township Hall. You can't miss it...seriously, the town is like two blocks. From there, we'll gradually make our way over to St. Ignace.
This event is unusual in that the end point is 40 miles east of the start point. If you're coming from the Sault or the south and want to do a convoy thing from St. Ignace to our lunch spot, let
platero know.IMPORTANT STUFF:
Sandwiches and pop (or...*sigh*...soda) will be provided. Any other food, bring it yourself. There
Fursuiting is welcome at the zoo!! However, this is a "trial run" for everyone involved, so please be on your best behavior.
Zoo tickets cost $5-9 apiece, depending on how many are in our party. Mini golf is $3 per person.
WHO:
Final turnout:

& two non-furs*** All official discussion should take place at MiFur if you have an account! ***IN UNRELATED NEWS:
If you live in Marquette, there's a couple of threads at UPFurry pertaining to you. One is to figure out who's in the area and the other is to talk about a Halloween meet.

Upcoming events - fall 2010
General | Posted 15 years agoTwo meets in two months? Can't wait!
• Our annual campout, organized by
nrg, will take place in the Keweenaw Peninsula on the night of August 28. Last year's excursion got rained out, but the 8 of us found plenty to do around Houghton. It's one of our few traditions!
•
platero is putting together a zoo/mini-golf meet in the St. Ignace area. Will the first eastern UP event in 3+ years (ever?) be a success? Find out on September 25.
• Nanocon is Michigan Tech's little anime convention, a popular event among local furs. Look for it in early November.
• November 19-21 is Midwest FurFest 2010: The Chicago Blues! It's only the world's third largest furry convention and the one probably most attended by Yoopers. New this year is the venue: the remodeled Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois.

[Discussion] Furmeet suggestions
General | Posted 15 years agoAlmost every U.P. furmeet in the past couple years has taken place around Houghton. And usually, it's either a watch-movies-and-draw-stuff meet or a campout. They say variety is the spice of life, so what other meets would you like to see?
Feel free to name an activity (bowling, swimming, mini-golf)
...or a specific place (Garlyn Zoo, Quincy Mine, Paulding Light)
...or an event (Nanocon, Ishpeming Renaissance Festival)
...or a city (Escanaba, Sault Ste Marie)...or whatever.
These are just ideas for now. If you want to make one of these happen, take it to a local forum.
Let's get brainstorming! :3
